Jasper and I took an epic, off-lead, hike the other night along the Hastings Heritage Trail. We were having a great time, minding our own business when all of a sudden we came across two big unfamiliar dogs who were also playfully making their way towards us. Jasper spotted them long before I even realized we had company. Both of them were wearing tags and they seemed friendly enough. Still, I stood there, glancing between Jasper and the strangers and back again, trying to figure out how to proceed. I didn’t want to have to turn around but I also wasn’t sure what would happen if we all crossed paths.

Even though I knew it wasn’t helping the situation, I was nervous. I looked at Jasper – his tail and hackles were down but he stood in rigid conformation, completely alert and focused and by now the other dogs had assumed the same position. I took a few calming breaths and stepped in front of Jasper, forming a wall between him and what was causing him anxiety. Be the leader, be the leader, be the leader… Jasper backed down behind me, sulking, but the other two didn’t budge. I took a couple of steps forward, determined for this showdown to end well. I was met with a couple of barks before the dogs before they turned tail and darted into the bush.

So, here’s the thing: Jasper is not an aggressive dog. He is, in fact, quite submissive. He’s great with the girls and the pups in our own pack (although because he and our other males are part of our breeding program and therefore are intact, we tend to keep them separated. I guess his manhood is definitely part of the problem but I know it’s not all of it). Unfortunately, he’s also a bit of a baby (I’ll take the blame here) and as such, he can be somewhat anxious.

With people he’s an absolute prince – gentle and respectful. But when it comes to dogs he doesn’t know, he’s can be apprehensive. In teh grand scheme of things, he’d prefer to just ignore them. Given a nice, calm one-on-one meet n’ greet and he’s fine. But as soon as a hyper dog with an unrelenting desire to be in our space shows up, Jasper gets a bit snarly.

Back in puppy kindergarten he didn’t pay any attention to the other dogs until they had “play time”, at which point he would opt to meet with his calmer classmates over the more rowdy ones. To help him socialize, I brought him to dog parks as often as I could. Unfortunately for him, most of the dogs in those parks are the rowdy ones. He’s antisocial tactics included hiding under benches and sitting on the laps of whoever was closest.

But of course, somewhere between puppy hood and now, testosterone kicked in. While he would still prefer to ignore other dogs when we’re out walking on the lead or sit under a bench when I force him into a dog park, he’s also become much more, shall we say, expressive when it comes to rambunctious dogs getting up in his face.

Now, it’s important that I point out that Jasper has never once hurt another dog. He will, however, give a warning nip or two with a side-order of terror-inducing guttural growls if a dog tries getting too friendly without permission. For example, when he was about 6 months old, I would drive him, my friend @omgdance and her hyper Golden Retriever, Beckham around in my little car like one big happy family. Of course, the two of them always had the chance to sniff and such before hand.

Then one fateful day, Beckham jumped into the front seat before Jasper had the chance to check him out. Needless to say, he wasn’t very happy about that. We tried to let them sniff it out after but Beckham was too worked up and Jasper wasn’t having any of it. Still, months later we tried again. We brought them together in a calmer, more controlled environment and they were able to have a great lil’ play date.

Unfortunately, not every encounter we have with unfamiliar dogs can be that controlled. This social anxiety is what I consider to be Jasper’s primary behavioral concern and I want to see him overcome it.

I know that in a big way, change needs to start with me. As Cesar Millan (Oh yes, I am a fan) always says, stay calm and assertive. I need to be a more balanced person in general if I want to be able to properly lead my dog. But as far as working on Jasper’s socialization is concerned, I’m open to suggestion on safe and effective techniques that can help. For now, I’m makingmy way through Cesar’s Way in hopes of some guidance but I’d love to hear from anyone who has experienced similar issues! What do you do to socialize your dog? How do you work with unfamiliar, hyper dogs?

Came out in the papers today that David Beckham has asthma, and was “spotted” using an inhaler.

So?! It’s been reported as though he has a terminal disease!

OK, sure it’s good that this has come out, and they say his branding and marketing has covered this up to give him a “cleaner than clean” image. If this is the case that’s pretty poor.

But on the other hand, it is supposedly mild, and why should he need to declare it?! It’s not a lethal weapon!

Hopefully this will show youngsters or others that exercise can still be performed, even at a high level, if you do have such “limiting” factors or medical issues.

At the end of the day if you focus on your goals, work hard towards them, nothing should stop you from achieving them.

Oh, hell yes.

Say what you want about the fairness of settling games—especially championship games—on penalties, but you can’t deny that they are riveting theater and, judging by the expressions, at right, of Mssrs. Findley, Wingert, Borchers, Beckerman, Williams, and Grabavoy, they do not cheapen that championship feeling one iota. Those are the expressions of players who just won a trophy, end of story.

As unusual as it may be for a team that went 11-12-7 during the regular season to be lifting the cup when all is said and done, Real Salt Lake are worthy champions. They peaked at the right time, and they outplayed Los Angeles last night. They could have won in the run of play—should have, even. 

An email friend of Backpost, an Englishman (who supports Hull and Jozy Altidore, btw), sent us the above photo, with comments to the effect of, “If players have this much passion, then more fans will surely follow, right…? 46,000 to see this one? Not bad. Looked like a good final.”

And we agreed, and we appreciated the sentiments, and at the same time we thought, Well, it’s the league championship, and damn right they’re fired up to win it; while also thinking, Yes, we can understand how the U.S. is still considered a backwater burg in global soccer, and how it might, from an outside perspective, seem surprising to see players that stoked to win MLS. But this league is coming along, and beyond that, soccer is here to stay in this country. It’s alive and well on these shores. And snowballing.

Look, Real Salt Lake, which another friend of ours—a dedicated anglophile, despite growing up in New Jersey—once called Get Real Salt Lake, has real fans:

When the U.S. hosted the 1994 World Cup, it advanced out of group play and lost 1-0 to Brazil in the second round. The Yanks’ most skillful player that day, Tab Ramos, was deleted from the game by a Leonardo elbow to the head (it fractured Ramos’s skull). We’re not suggesting that Ramos would’ve delivered a victory, but his exit didn’t help, and the final score was only 1-0. MLS launched in 1996, and,  yes, the U.S. had a stinker of a ‘98 World Cup, but in 2002, the Yanks were a Torsten Frings handball from a tie with Germany in the quarterfinals. MLS has been a huge part of the improvement.

The U.S. has full-international wins over Argentina, Germany, Brazil (that’s right), Spain, and England. They may have shat the bed at the 2006 World Cup, but not before drawing eventual world champions Italy 1-1 with nine men (to the Azzurri’s ten), in a match no less an authority than Wikipedia—Wikipedia!—called “hugely encouraging” for the Amerks. Seriously, though, the U.S. is good and getting better at this game, and the numbers, and the tide of history, are in the U.S.’s favor.

So…yeah…the giant is still snoozing, but it is rousing—maybe slowly, but surely.

But back to this title tilt, and the 2009 season: Sure, the Beckham-lifting-the-trophy photo opp did not materialize, and it would have been massive press for MLS, but Los Angeles’s worst-to-first season in the Western Conference was about the best the league could expect this year. A Galaxy title would’ve been gravy.

Think back to last spring, when the league was wrangling with AC Milan over Beckham’s contract. Many, many people said they should cut bait and say good riddance. But the Galaxy and the league played this one the right way. Having Beckham as a part-time player (a committed one, that is—as he undeniably was this year) is better than not having him at all‚ no matter how much cash he might’ve generated in departing altogether. They kept him, made an honest man of him, and came within a penalty shootout of a dream ending with him.

John Harkes said during the MLS Cup telecast that Beckham had told him he wants to return after his upcoming loan to AC Milan (he will return, regardless), and it’s not a stretch to believe it, especially after looking at a photo like this, after Donovan’s penalty versus Houston in the semifinals:

For Beckham, it really is all about the soccer.

The man is all about the game, and despite everything else that comes along with him, it begins and ends there. But next year, he most likely will not have Donovan, the league MVP, for a teammate, and that will be a huge loss. It won’t be easy for LA to make up for it, but they’ll need to, and continue to surround Beckham with a decent lineup. Then take another shot at that photo opp next year.

I’m sure you all stayed up to watch it but just to recap, David Beckham’s LA Galaxy fell at the very last hurdle last night. Losing on penalties to Real Salt Lake. Whilst Beckham scored his penalty, his friend turned foe turned friend again (and captain) skied his somewhere into the Galaxy (see what I did there).

This article from TheOffside points out that Galaxy were favourites in every way so will this be the end of Beckham’s journey for the Los Angeles team?

Perancis akhirnya lolos ke Piala Dunia 2010 setelah berhasil membungkam Irlandia dengan menang secara agregat 2-1, setelah meraih hasil seri 1-1 pada leg kedua setelah sebelumnya menang 1-0 pada leg pertama, pertandingan ini dilangsungkan di Parc des Princes, Kamis (19/11) dinihari WIB.

Di pertandingan kedua, tim nasional Irlandia mampu bermain lebih baik dan lebih lepas dari Perancis. Permainan cantik ini membuahkan hasil dengan unggulnya Irlandia 1-0 atas timnas Perancis pada menit ke 32 melalui gol yang disarangkan Damien Duff. Tak hanya sampai di situ timnas Irlandia terus menekan Perancis dan menghasilkan berbagai peluang namun gagal membuahkan gol.

Skor pertandingan tidak berubah sampai menit ke 103 di mana pada saat itu Henry, bintang timnas Perancis melakukan kecurangan dengan menyentuh bola dengan tangannya lalu mengumpan bola kepada Gallas yang langsung menyambutnya dengan baik sehingga membuat pertandingan berakhir dengan hasil seri 1-1 atau dengan keunggulan Perancis secara agregat.

Gol ini menuai protes pemain timnas Irlandia namun sayang wasit tidak melihatnya dan menganggap gol itu sah.

Usai pertandingan Henry pun mengakui tangannya menyentuh bola dengan menyatakan, “Jujur, itu memang handball. Tapi, saya bukan wasit. Saya tetap akan melanjutkan permainan karena wasit membiarkannya.”

Apapun alasan Henry timnas Irlandia tetap tidak terima karena dengan gol kontroversial itu, mimpi timnas Irlandia untuk tampil di Piala Dunia 2010 pun pupus. Robbie Keane selaku kapten timnas Irlandia sendiri tidak dapat menahan emosi dan berkata,”FIFA jelas tak ingin Irlandia tampil di Piala Dunia.”

David Beckham’s rehabilitation with the LA Galaxy fans will be completed when he goes with the team to join US soldiers on a morale-boosting trip to show their support for the ongoing military campaign in Afghanistan. They’re back in love with him anyway after he took them to the weekend’s MLS Cup Final.

They’ll be there on Thanksgiving Day an emotional experience for all.

Call me a cynic, but when I read of the hardship he was going to endure in a US army barracks I did think it was going to be in Afghanistan, but it’s actually in Germany.

On the evening of Thanksgiving Beckham and his team-mates will play Kaiserslautern FC – currently in the second tier of German football – in a friendly match at their 48-500 capacity Fritz Walter Stadium. Up to 25,000 tickets for the game are being made available to US servicemen, their families and US Defence Department staff.

I beyond hate ballerina flats – I can’t even walk in them. Unless they’re on a ballet dancer doing ballet, I just don’t get it.

COULD NOT AGREE MORE. I have a number of friends who love ballet flats,* but seriously, I own ballet flats for ballet dancing. I don’t want to damage my arches. Nor do I want to soak my feet should it be cloudy with a chance of meatballs. Sneakers or stilettos, real shoes, people. REAL. SHOES.

­Way back in March I wrote a post that tried to predict England’s World Cup squad for next summer’s tournament in South Africa. In it around 50 or so players were analysed; everyone from certainties like Wayne Rooney to certainly nots like Curtis Davies. With the friendly against Brazil fresh in the mind and only one more international break before the end of the season, there isn’t much time for players to impress if they haven’t already. As before let’s work our way through who’s on the plane through to who won’t be going at all. .

Key men (if England are to reach their usual quarter final):

First name in the squad is the captain John Terry simply as he’s captain. I personally think he gets found against the very best strikers but there’s no chance of him not going. He’s swiftly followed by Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard. Rio Ferdinand goes as long as he’s fit, though it’s a concern if he doesn’t make it simply as playing style wise he’s harder to replace than Terry – England don’t have a lot of ball playing centre backs but do have a lot of one paced ones.

Gareth Barry is defensive midfielder of choice though may be usurped by a fit again Owen Hargreaves. They’ll both be on the plane however. Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson are the first choice full backs and are far ahead of their immediate competition. 

Thinking...

On the plane (extra leg room provided):

David Beckham has sorted another loan spell at AC Milan and I’m positive he’ll be going to his 4^th World Cup. He’s very much a bench player these days but still offers great set piece ability as well as experience. Emile Heskey has not been in great form and is no longer in Aston Villa’s starting XI but that said he will still be on the plane. He won’t score but he makes Rooney et al play better so for that reason is picked.

David James is first choice keeper, and despite his age should be able to handle that number of games in a month. Theo Walcott has had a succession of injuries but has done enough in the games he’s played to go as a wide man who can play up front. His pace is a big asset, plus he strikes me as someone who does what he’s told hence Capello likes him.

Matthew Upson and Jermaine Defoe should go as first back-up centre back and striker respectively. Neither are going to win you a World Cup final but they’re the best reserves in their position. Defoe just needs to watch his petulance slightly as there’s no point having a player who is going to miss games after needless red cards..

Looking for their passport (they are going out of Europe after all):

Joe Cole should be a little worried, just as he hasn’t found a way into the Chelsea team after injury, but at the same time he offers dribbling ability and creativity that not many can match. I was quite down on James Milner in my last prediction but did say he had a shot of making it. He seems to be impressing Capello right now and can play in a few positions. I do wonder whether he ultimately misses out due to the competition on the right side, though he has been playing down the left for England so you never know.

Aaron Lennon will be there or thereabouts, possibly in a straight battle with Milner for a spot. Rob Green looks like he’s firmly established as England’s number two while Wes Brown’s versatility of being a right back and centre back should mean he finds his way into the squad. 

Still thinking...

On the fringes (which bits are chopped?):

Wayne Bridge is doing his best to play his way out of the squad. You could argue about whether you really need to take a reserve left back, especially when the likes of Gareth Barry could play there if needed. Barring injury, the first choice defence are going to play every game so specialist reserve left back may be an area to gamble on not taking.

Of the other alternatives Capello has picked during his tenure, Leighton Baines and Steven Warnock don’t strike me as being quite good enough. If Joleon Lescott goes he provides left back cover too but he is quite shaky defensively so I don’t think he does. There is dearth of centre backs though. What price Kieran Gibbs continuing his rapid progress and staking a claim? Of all those players, he’ll be the only one playing Champions League football but a lot depends on whether he can keep Gael Clichy out of the Arsenal side once the Frenchman returns from injury. He appears to have just injured himself too.

I reckon Michael Carrick probably only goes if Barry or Hargreaves are injured and even then he’s shown countless times for Man Utd that he’s not a big game player. Gabriel Agbonlahor offers pace and will find himself with Peter Crouch, Carlton Cole and Darren Bent in the queue for the 4^th striker spot.

Capello has only ever picked seven strikers so it would be a surprise to see him take five of them, not least when Walcott can play up front. Of the four I would say that the Sunderland man had his chance against Brazil and didn’t take it. I think Agbonlahor doesn’t give enough variety when compare to the others – with a 4^th striker you want someone who offers something unique.

In that regard I’d say it will be a close run thing between Crouch and Cole.The former has a good international record (against crap teams at least) and is very tall (though not that good in the air) while the latter is a more complete striker who has pace, power and can play the target man role too. It’s a tough choice to be honest and I think Cole may need to break his international duck in the next round of fixtures if he’s to pip Crouch.

Ashley Young may find himself as number 24 on the list of players though personally I would find a space for him. It does seem like Capello isn’t quite sure of him yet. There aren’t too many options down the left but it does seem like either him or Milner would go but not both.

Still not quite sure...

Too late to make it? (need good form and injuries to others):

Stewart Downing has upgraded clubs but has six months to shine at Aston Villa following serious injury. The same probably goes for Phil Jagielka at Everton. Tom Huddlestone got his first call up against Brazil and while he’s decent player, he’s not yet international standard. Jimmy Bullard? Unlikely but you never know. I see him being a good pundit though. Scott Parker has a very outside chance of being one of the back-up central midfielders; he’s certainly no worse than Carrick in my opinion.

Ben Foster? Joe Hart? Chris Kirkland? Take your pick for the third goalkeeping spot. I doubt it will be the latter though.Of other players we mentioned last time Jack Wilshere isn’t yet getting regular games at Arsenal while Jonathan Woodgate is permanently injured. Dean Ashton has essentially retired.

However Gary Cahill has played well enough at Bolton to come on to the radar as 4^th centre back and has a chance of going if Capello takes eight defenders. Everton’s Jack Rodwell could be a dark horse but I think it is one tournament too soon for him. The same goes for some of the West Ham youngsters like Mark Noble and Jack Collison.

Now thinking "Why are they so useless?"

Providing ITV analysis (or BBC if they’re good):

I had Shaun Wright-Phillips as going six months ago but now I think he misses out as you have Lennon, Walcott and Beckham providing all you need down the right (dribbling/goals/crossing). SWP can do all three but not as well and his poor performance against Brazil has sealed a seat next to Papa Wrighty on the studio sofa.

Jermaine Jenas is another who isn’t particularly defensive or attacking. World Cup squad players need be specialists once you get beyond the first team, there’s no room for these jack of all trades types who provide little. Michael Owen has yet to be picked by Capello and barring injuries to four of the seven strikers we mentioned will not be going to South Africa.

Micah Richards needs to get back in the Man City team before he can think about England – it’s all gone a bit pear shaped for him hasn’t it? The three keepers speak for themselves as do the first four defenders. Versatility is the name of the game so to complement Upson you have two centre backs in Brown and Lescott that can cover the two full back slots.

In midfield you have the three main men plus a fit again Hargreaves. Beckham goes for his experience while Lennon and Joe Cole provide the skill and trickery on either wing from the bench.Milner offers the most versatility of the remaining midfield options so gets the eighth spot.

Up front Rooney is a given, as is Heskey due to their partnership. Defoe is the main back up and I think Carlton Cole will play his way into the squad, pipping Peter Crouch whose record of scoring against bad teams is of no use when you only have good teams in the World Cup. Theo Walcott rounds off the squad as a foward player who can play right wing or as striker.

At most risk is Lescott I’d say and possibly Milner too. You may want more cover in central midfield and down the left so perhaps Carrick and Bridge or Gibbs (who could also play left wing) end up going instead.
