I have been to the Emerson Place many times over the past 6 years, but I have never braved the World’s Largest Kaleidoscope at the Emerson Country Store . The Emerson Place is a quiet group of stores next door to the Emerson Resort and Spa.  There are a few fancy home decor stores (avoid them if you have wild toddlers), a nice toy store which specializes in kaleidoscopes, and a very chic and cozy snack bar that serves Starbucks coffee and Jane’s Gourmet Ice Cream. (In case you have never tried Jane’s Ice Cream, try it…It’s amazing!) The snack bar/book store also sells homemade danishes, cookies and sandwiches. 

The Kaleidoscope show runs 10 minutes long and costs $5.40 for adults and is free for children 12 and under. It is sort of built like a miniature planetarium. When the lights go out, you can see Kaleidoscope patterns change on the ceiling. Today’s show was “America, The House We Live In”  which included many Americana, political images, and a very colorful 70s segment. It’s good fun for kids and grown-ups! This is where France really comes into its own, in the mid-range price bracket £7-£12. Why are these wines generally superior? One reason is that the typical French winery is a small family business where the focus is on driving quality and reputation before profit, with an average 2/3 family members and 2 employees farming just 25 hectares of vineyard. Compare this to Australia where 15 giant wineries now make 86% of the wine produced.

Take one example of the difference a focus on quality can make: hand vs machine harvesting. I recently helped pick the harvest at Domaine des Anges here in the Ventoux and even this year when the fine summer had left the grapes in great condition we were still leaving about every tenth bunch on the ground, rejected for showing some signs of minor rot. A harvesting machine – ubiquitous in Australia – can make no such discernment; all the bunches go into the hopper together and in order for off-flavours not to appear in your glass, ‘corrective’ procedures are then necessary in the winery. When the French talk loftily about the importance of a wine “expressing its terroir” it’s too easy to scoff, what they really mean is they aim to reduce intervention (chemicals, modern techniques for softening tannins, wood substitutes etc) in the wine-making to an absolute minimum. The result is wines that are as infinitely different from each other as the terrain is different from farm to farm – it’s what makes wine-drinking such fun: the continual discovery of different nuances of aroma and flavour from different producers.

So, what are my top tips for characterful wines from our area, available in the UK, in that price bracket? At Majestic the 2006 Clos de Mont-Olivet Cotes du Rhone, £8.99 (or at time of writing £6.99 each if you buy two): big, savoury and warming. As an aside, Cotes du Rhone level wines from Chateauneuf du Pape producers are a great source of bargains. From M&S the earthy, spicy Perrin brother’s (another CNDP house) Rasteau 2007 at £9.99; and, finally, from the Devon wine merchant Christopher Piper, available online, the Cotes du Rhone Villages Visan 2005 from Roche-Audran at £11.16, a bio-dynamic wine of great complexity and character that will convince you that your extra pounds have been wisely invested.

Empezamos nuestra andadura en el turismo rural en Enero del 2008 y nos consideramos todavia unos novatos en este tema. El otro día hablando con un colega que lleva muchos años metido en este mundo, nos decía que cada vez se daba  mas cuenta del mucho desconocimiento que hay, sobre todo por parte de algunos que se dicen profesionales en la materia, entre ellos, algunos departamentos de organismo oficiales que llevan el turismo rural aquí en Castilla La Mancha.  Decía muy enfadado, que estaban  todavía en la edad de piedra diseñando costosas guias y folletos que no sirvan  para nada, en lugar de ver la realidad, por donde y hacía donde se movía el mercado,  Internet y Televisión. Insistía que lo que se necesitaba era gente cualificada e innovadora  que creara verdaderos planes para el desarrollo del  turismo rural en Castilla La Mancha.

Each year the Grand Canyon Railway presents The Polar Express. Two of our children with, our grandchildren, went for an evening last week.  Our grandkids loved it and our kids enjoyed it also.  It was a great evening for spending time with Santa and family. Cuore della Sicilia greca, quasi a contrapposizione della parte occidentale arabeggiante, Siracusa si affaccia sulla costa sud est dell’isola, tra i colli Iblei e il mare Ionio. Scegliere di passare le vacanze a Siracusa è semplice, basti pensare che, insieme all’area delle vicine necropoli rupestri di Pantalica, è stata insignita del tanto ambito riconoscimento di Patrimonio dell’Umanità da parte dell’Unesco.

La scoperta di Siracusa non può prescindere, oltre che da Neapolis (la città greca), un vero e proprio distretto archeologico visitato da tantissimi turisti, dove meritano rilievo sicuramente il teatro greco e l’anfiteatro romano, ma soprattutto da Ortigia, un posto dalla storia millenaria.

Ortigia è un vero gioiello posto su un isolotto collegato al resto della città. È forse l’uncio posto in Sicilia che più di ogni altro ha mantenuto quella straordinaria stratificazione di civiltà che caratterizza tutte le vicende dell’isola. Una nell’altra sono straordinariamente incastrate la città greca, quella bizantina, quella normanna e quella barocca, in un intreccio unico di strade e architetture che non si finisce mai di vedere.

Il mare è un elemento fortemente presente nella città di Siracusa. Nelle vicinanze ci sono spiagge molto belle dove passare le giornate a fare il bagno e abbronzarsi, come quella sabbiosa di Fontane Bianche. A sud di Ortigia lo specchio di mare che si estende dal Porto Grande alla penisola “della Maddalena” costituisce una sorta di grande porto naturale. La punta della Maddalena, chiamata Capo Murro di Porco, è una zona di grande interesse naturalistico protetta dalla Riserva del Fiume Ciane, comprendente anche la foce del Fiume Ciane e le saline.

All you’ve got to say is, “Let’s go, girls!”, and this is the kind of response we usually have…

I’m ready to go!!  I’m there – wherever “there” is.  The point is…IT DOESN’T REALLY MATTER WHERE “There” IS – just so that it “IS” and we can all “BE” together.

That’s an actual response from Brenda when she started thinking about going on a girlfriend getaway.  And it’s so true!

Early one fall, a girlfriend and I went to a bed and breakfast for some really needed away time.  We chose to stay in one of the little cabins that was built behind the main house.  We stayed for four wonderful days resting and reviving, being pampered by the hosts, and spending time in nature.  We walked on trails in the woods and through open fields on the property.  We took afternoon naps in hammocks that were hung by a pond.  We slept late each morning, and had a wonderful breakfast waiting for us in the main dining room.  Those were the best cheese grits I have ever tasted!  Late each afternoon, we were treated to homemade cider and persimmon bread.  They were so yummy!  The owner even had snacks and drinks waiting for us whenever we wanted them.

The last night we were there, we decided to go to a restaurant that was built on the edge of a cliff.  There were different rooms within the restaurant that were decorated around a theme like “Gone With The Wind”.  We ordered prime rib and enjoyed a great meal.  Afterwards, we walked outside to the edge of the cliff, up to the iron fencing.  The view was beautiful.  We sat on a bench, looking at the city lights below, just recharging our souls.

Sounds nice, huh?  Sounds like it was a great girlfriend getaway, right?  Well…it was!  But there’s a little something that I’ve left out of the story.  This little detail is what makes Brenda’s response at the beginning so true!

Now, for the rest of the story…

The day before we left to go to this little bed and breakfast, a huge storm came through the area.  In fact, this huge storm was the remnant of a hurricane.  Seriously!  It knocked down trees and knocked out power.  The owners of the bed and breakfast were not able to contact us to let us know that they were without power.  So…when we arrived for our four days of rest and relaxation, we were greeted with oil lamps and very apologetic hosts.  Fortunately, the main house had a generator, and that’s how they were able to cook the meals.  To be honest, though, we were disappointed at first.  Who wants to spend four days somewhere without power?  But, the most amazing thing happened.  It forced us to slow down and spend a lot of time outside – walking on the trails and out in the fields, resting in the hammocks, and sitting in the kitchen with the owners just getting to know each other.  We couldn’t go shopping or watch TV.  We had to use oil lamps after it got dark for light and noticed how peaceful and quiet everything was with the power out.  We realized just how noisy our everyday world really is.

The power finally came on the night before we left, and we decided to go out to eat on our last night there.  It would have been fine with us if it never came back on the whole time because we felt like we had really rested and gotten away from the world.  We told the owners of the bed and breakfast that we felt like the power outage was a blessing in disguise.  It was, and we’d do it all over again not changing a thing!
