Yesterday, I received the following email from a friend I went to high school with:

“Hi Anne, I use Canoe as my home page here at work and at home and was pleased to see that your B&B is listed as the top one in Nova Scotia. Congratulations!!”

It was an article, written in conjunction with bbcanada.com, that listed the Top B&B’s across Canada, one from each province.  Ours was chosen to represent Nova Scotia!

How exciting!  I found out later that the journalist at Canoe worked with both bbcanada.com and the Provincial Tourism Associations across the Country to come up with the winners!

Now that’s a great way to start the day!

No m’hauria de sorprendre que els mitjans comparessin el nou disc d’Els Amics de les Arts amb l’efecte Manel, però em sorprèn perquè el Bed & Breakfast no ho pretén. Simplement és una evolució del so dels Amics, que per fi han gosat incorporar bateria i baix i deixar de banda les bases. Si fan el mateix per al directe, poden arribar a ser una banda potent de veure. De fet, personalment m’agradaria molt.

No m’hauria de sorprendre que La Pegatina omplís per segona vegada aquest any el Cotton de Lleida, on al març van batre un rècord històric amb més de 1.200 persones d’aforament, però segueix sorprenent que un grup com ells, que mai surten a les revistes aconseguixi fites d’aquest tarannà. Han lluitat molt i han sabut triar el camí.

I’ve been thinking about “adopting” a Charity of the Month for some time. This month I have been inspired to begin. We will be counting our room nights between now, November 22, and December 31, 2009 and we will donate $5 for each room towards purchasing the gift of an animal for Heifer International. We will also send a note to each guest who stays with us during that time, sharing what gift we were able to give. So what will this gift buy?

So, you may be thinking, what inspired us today to begin this program. Well, we had an inspiring morning filling Operation Christmas Child boxes! As we went from table to table selecting items for the boxes, we watched children inspired to think of items they would love to see themselves in a gift box – a baseball hat, a button-up shirt, a rubik’s cube, a calculator with a case… the boxes were stuffed full. They wrote a personal note, and even attached an EZ Give label so we can track where in the world the boxes are delivered. When we were finished someone turned to me and said “I’m So Excited, and I don’t even know why!”

Well I do! And it got me inspired! How could the Nicolin Mansion participate in sharing and experiencing this joy? Operation Christmas Child collects and begins distributing the shoe boxes of gifts in November, so maybe it’s too late for that this year. But I thought of a conversation with one of my close friends in which we decided we wouldn’t exchange gifts, but rather pool the money we would have used to buy gifts for each other and buy the gift of an animal for Heifer International instead. That was it – how about pooling a donation for each room night we have between now and the end of the year. Now, we are so excited too! The same excitement I witnessed as we filled those shoe boxes.

El Rancho Merlita is to be  a feature property on the Tucson Treasures show by KMSB Fox 11 AZ.  Rancho Merlita is a tucson gem, and will soon be open to the public as a Bed & Breakfast. The Rancho Merlita Ranch House living room is pictured below (click photo to enlarge).

Aangezien de prijs in dit voorbeeld een belangrijke factor is waarop mensen selecteren, is het handig om deze te communiceren met de (potentiële) klanten.

Com sempre, en Kurti va treure la càmera de fotos i video per immortalitzar moments que de ben segur no calia que passessin a la posteritat, que de ben segur no seran als Annals de la Història, que diu la cançó. Chicon ou endive ? Chambre d’hôte ou bed & breakfast ? Vous l’aurez compris, c’est chou vert et vert chou. Depuis quelques semaines, les internautes intéressés peuvent prévisualiser des chambres d’hôte sur un nouveau site (www.bnb360.be). A leur disposition : le panorama virtuel d’une vingtaine de chambres sur l’ensemble du parce que gère Bed & Brussels.

Le catalogue sera complété au fur et à mesure. Les visiteurs y trouvent aussi une carte interactive et détaillée de la région bruxelloise ainsi que des informations sur les rues et transports en commun avoisinant le bed & breakfast.

Outil innovant et unique en Europe, le projet résulte d’un constat : « Internet est incontournable dans le milieu du tourisme », indique Olivier Poulaert, directeur de Bed & Brussels. « Il y a une véritable attente de la part des visiteurs. Ils veulent voir leur chambre, avoir une information la plus complète possible ». Internet, et plus spécialement la visite à 360, la leur fournit.
Bien que le nombre de chambres visitables de façon panoramique soit encore limité, Bed & Brussels constate un effet domino : le nombre de visites sur le site traditionnel avec des photos « normales » (www.bnb-brussels.be) augmente de manière constante : 1.200 visites par jour ! Et les réservations suivent également cette tendance. « Le mois de mai 2006 est le meilleur mois que nous ayons connu depuis notre création », signale Olivier Poulaert.

Mais quelle différence fondamentale avec un hôtel ? Le prix, tout d’abord. « Nous sommes clairement moins chers, commente Olivier Poulaert. Le prix d’un haut de gamme chez nous correspond au prix d’un 2 ou 3 étoiles dans l’hôtellerie traditionnelle ». Ensuite, la chambre d’hôte se veut « une alternative chez l’habitant ». Les avantages sont multiples d’après lui : accueil, convivialité et environnement. It felt so great to start the week feeling refreshed. Check out the weekend’s sleep stats:

WOW! Some may call that lame, I call it smart. I enjoyed Saturday at the inn soo much! My uncle had actually prepared Kari’s room for me on Saturday (Kari is my lovely cousin). I was kind of bummed not to stay in my room, but I got over it quickly. The best was unreal comfy!

Another shot for ya…

Before I got too comfortable, I went to visit my uncle, who was working at 6th Ave Wine and Ale in town. I figured a glass of wine would be a great way to kick off my evening.

I don’t think I’ve ever gone to a bar alone and I felt a little creepy, but my Uncle kept me company. The glass I ordered, per my Uncle’s recommendation, was fantastic. Have you heard of Middle Sister Wines? I had a glass of their Rebel Red, a red blend made from:
38% Zinfandel, 34% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Syrah, 2% mixed red varietals.
100% California grapes with 42% from the Lodi appellation

I will definitely be looking for this wine at the liquor store in town!

Rebel Red released my inner rebel and I had some crazy ideas while drinking it. Let me explain…

Part of me expected to go on my little “retreat” and make some big, life changing decisions. I had some serious ambitions te evaluate where I’m at in life and to change anything I didn’t like. I think my friends (and maybe you!?) were a little weirded out by the weekend. I warned anyone concerned that there was a good chance I would come back without any hair, that I might just pull a total Britney Spears crazy woman move.

The good news is I still have my hair. The even BETTER news is that I decided that I’m pretty happy! Life is good– I love my job, I’m learning a ton. I have a great family that I’m lucky to live close to and my friends are the best. Right now, I can’t think of much that needs to change. However… while drinking Rebel Red I was texting with Teresa and told her we should move to Europe. I gave her quite the sales pitch that “We need to take advantage of our indpendence. Now. Or. Never.” So dramatic, I know. We’ll see how that turns out :)

I was so excited to get back to the B&B for sweatpants, dinner and a movie. I wasn’t starving and made myself this little sampler plate:

Spinach salad with roasted red peppers and green beands, cheese and crackers & a slice of coconut pie. Enjoyed fireside (sorry so blur).

During dinner I watched one of my favorite movies, “He’s Just Not That Into You” and decided that this is a movie I should watch at least once a month. The information is so valuable. Why don’t they teach that s**t in school!?

On Sunday I went to church and out to brunch with my Uncle. Then it was back home to get ready for the week. It’s another busy one, as usual! Hoping to catch up with you guys tomorrow.

This weekend the Annual General Meeting of the Nova Scotia Bed & Breakfast Association was held here in Truro.  What a fun weekend!!

We woke up Friday morning to snow & slush, so unfortunately some of the Board of Directors weren’t able to make it to our meeting & potluck lunch.  However, we still had enough in attendance that we had a quorum so our meeting took place regardless.  After that was over, the B&B’s in town held house tours for anyone who was here from outside the area.  So often, we are asked to recommend B&B’s in other parts of the province, so it is helpful to know what different areas have to offer. In the evening, we all went over to Tulips & Thistle B&B for a wine & cheese party.  It was such a great opportunity to network with other operators from around the province and share some really funny stories!

The AGM itself took place at First United Church Hall on Saturday and the UCW had prepared lunch for 75 people.  Unfortunately, we did have a few members send regrets at the last-minute due to weather conditions and/or illness.  Regardless, we were pleased with the turnout.  The morning program started off with information sessions by Tom Wilson who spoke about online & social marketing and its importance these days.  Next, Jill MacIntosh from www.bbcanada.com spoke to us about maximizing our web presence and taking full advantage of offers made to us through the bbcanada website.  Just before lunch, Kieu Lam from TIANS along with Doug Matthews from the Department of Tourism, Culture & Heritage came to speak with us about the new Nova Scotia Approved Program for accommodation operators.

We enjoyed a wonderful lunch provided by the UCW and then got down to the business of our AGM.  Our Board of Directors is undergoing a tremendous change with eight new directors this year, including a new President & Vice President.  We’re hoping to take the Association in a positive new direction and I’m really looking forward to working with this new group of people.

Jill had suggested that we, along with Ruth & Gerry, Ann & Larry & Jennifer all go out to dinner Saturday night to celebrate the successful weekend. We toasted our successes with some Prost, a sparkling wine made by Jost Vineyards, a local winery. We then all went out for supper at a restaurant close by called “The Lovin Spoonful“. Not only was the company so much fun, but the meal and the service were amazing!! We will all be recommending that restaurant to our guests from now on!!  After three hours at the restaurant, laughing & telling stories, we came back here to Belgravia for coffee and ended the weekend on a high note!

Went with girlfriends for a holiday shopping weekend. We stayed at a really fun Bed & Breakfast that was composed of old cabins from the past. Many are quite rustic, but very cute. Nothing better than shopping with friends! I did not buy very much, but just seeing all the holiday decorations put me in the mood for the holidays so guess I can officially say ” I have the holiday spirit”!

Our Room Highlight for this month is our Lewis Carroll Studio Bedchamber. This bedchamber was just recently remodeled in the last few months, and I am afraid this photo is a little outdated. Romantically tucked under the eaves on the third floor, this charming studio bedchamber now provides an enchanting get-away with a king-sized bed featuring a gold leaf Rococo headboard inset with aubergine ultra-suede.

For added allure, the bed is crowned with a canopy wall cornice flowing with elegant curtains. Plump floor cushions, a corner fireplace, and a Jacuzzi tub with underwater lights and waterfall faucet complete the magical setting. Though Lewis Carroll is the smallest room in the house it warm and cozy, not cramped, and is the perfect place to relax and unwind while enjoying your loved one’s company.

Då var man i staterna igen då och åh vad fint, underbart, härligt och skönt det känns. Har precis avslutat en delikat frukost med blåbärsbagels. Innan dess var jag ute och gick en långpromenad. Helt fantastiskt var det och jag blev tårögd bara av att strosa runt på gatorna fram och tillbaka. Tog en tripp från vårt lilla hus på 24th upp till 50th.

Vill bara förtydliga att i två veckor framöver blir det lite annorlunda blogging från min sida. Har blivit halvt tvingad att jag måååste blogga om NYC. Det kommer bli lite mindre musik, lite mer storstad. Hoppas du tycker det är kul att läsa ändå Eftersom jag älskar den här stan så mycket så ska jag försöka ge lite tips på fina saker att göra. Nummer ett kommer här:

Skippar den här kronologiska ordningen och går tillbaka till gårdagen. Lite pics och filmer från resan hit. Allt gick nästan läskigt enligt planerna. Planen kom som de skulle. Vi fick vegomaten precis som vi skulle (motsatt American airlineseffekt även kallat) och precis så mycket Baileys som vi ansåg att vi behövde.

Vi anlände också till vårt Bed & Breakfast precis som vi skulle. Rummet är fint och frukosten GRYM. Att vi dessutom har trådlöst som är fungerande är ju nästan lite för bra för att vara sant. Det enda vi skulle kunna klaga på var det faktum att det var runt noll grader när vi skulle sova och fulla turister gick och sjöng New York New York i falsett när vi behövde sova bort jetlagen. Men. Eftersom att de är så söta här har vi idag fått en liten värmefläkt. Emelie kommer nu kunna sova utan tre filtar, en handduk samt vinterjacka över sig. Mys!

Allt flyter alltså på som en len Starbucks frappuchino. (Har förresten nu hittat närmaste Starbucks. 29th street. Hello everyday user that is me.) Gårdagens besök på Star-Ledger är inget undantag. Har redan hittat ett stammisställe i NJ också. Tänkte att jag redan idag ska gå in och be dom ge mig the usual, aka a small vanilla latte mmm

Men jag längtar till Starbucks. Förstås. Emelie har lovat mig ett besök idag.
