A bed is a piece of furniture (or a location) used as a place to sleep.

Beds usually consist of a mattress placed on top of a box spring inner-sprung base. The box spring is a large mattress-sized box containing wood and springs that provide additional support and suspension for the mattress.

The box spring will typically lie on a bed frame (which lifts the mattress/mattress-box spring off the ground) or on slats (usually made of 1″ x 4″ wood).

A “headboard”, “side rails”, and “footboard” or “front rail” will complete the bed.

“Headboard only” beds often incorporate a dust ruffle, bed skirt, or valance sheet to hide the bed frame.

For greater head support, most people use a pillow, placed at the top of a mattress. Also used is some form of covering blanket to insulate the sleeper, often bed sheets, a quilt, or a duvet.

Also, some people prefer to dispense with the box spring and bed frame, and replace it with a platform bed style. This is more common in Europe, Australia and Japan.

This image (below) is actually a scan of a 6×4 photograph.. i took this photo over a year ago on a wee crappy fuji camera but i really like the effect. The scan gave it a ridiculous blue tone so I didnt really do much to achieve the vintage wash in photoshop. I just added a vignette and lightened it a little.

1.  While often on these silly lists I am not really confessing anything, today I shall confess something for real.  Ready?  *Deep breath* I totally love this song.

2.  Let the mocking begin.  Your mocking hurts, but you know I’m gonna be okay, YeaaaAAAaaaaahh, it’s a party in the USA….I don’t care.  Mock all you want. 

3.  I bet you’re so jealous of my weekend plans.  What are my plans, you ask?  I shall be painting my bathroom.  I know.  EXCITEMENT GALORE.  I’m noddin my head like yeah.

4.  What’s worse: the fact that all I have to look forward to is painting my bathroom or the fact that I’m kind of excited to do it? 

5.  It’s all for my BFF.  Why I think she needs to see a painted bathroom when she comes for a visit, I don’t know.  It would be wiser to get the carpet cleaned.  Or exercise.

6.  Also, there is no way I’m going to lose 40 pounds in 27 days.  And I’m movin my hips like yeah.

7.  Remember myspace?  When it was cool?  Sad.  I feel bad for it’s noncoolness.  Anyways, I still go there sometimes because it’s easy to listen to music on myspace.  On facebook not so much.  So I went to myspace and put all the songs on the New Moon soundtrack on a playlist and I’ve been listening to it over and over and over.  I am now ready for the movie.  Brrring it.

8.  Yesterday, my boss sat at my computer when I got up to make some copies.  He heard the soundtrack playing and said “Kearsie likes weird European music”. 

9.  I think I’m just going to do it.  By it I mean open the other box with Edward and Bella.  What do you think?

10.  But I’m not telling my Hubs.  He just won’t get it.  He doesn’t get a whole lot about what I do.  But I provide him clean underwear and the occasional meal, so he doesn’t complain.

11.  Remember when I was all up in Twitter’s armpit?  Well, it’s back to being boring.  And not a boring addiction.  Just boring.  Noddin my head like yeah.

12.  I plan on giving this book for Christmas.  And I hope I get one too.

13.  I think I’m ready to learn to crochet.  All because of this shop.  Also some of her items are mature-ish.  I am not mature-ish so I look and laugh.  And wish I could crochet.

14.  Another confession:  I hunted forever the other day trying to figure out if Robsten are together or not.  I don’t care if you mock me.  It was a boring day and I just wanted to know already. 

15.  Then I sat and listened to Daniel Radcliffe interviews.  This is what happens on a slow day at work. 

16.  I think I know what I’m going to be when I grow up.  I’m going to be a bed-sheet engineer.  Because I can’t find one set of dadgummed sheets to stay on my bed without slipping off the corners.  For real.  I’m going to have a stroke one day screaming at my bed sheets.

17.  Also, I don’t really scream at my bed sheets.  That would make me crazy.  Noddin my head like yeah.

18.  Last night, I was told I’ve been misspelling “Febreze”.  This is almost as bad as the time I was told I misspelled “definitely”. 

19.  It sucks to feel dum.

4. Room Mate

SOME WILL WIN, SOME WILL LOSE

I would suggest you do not try to be best friends with your room mate. Remember, you live together, give eachother space, or you will get sick of eachother. Who you get as a room mate will probably be random. So why worry about it. Some people will grow to be life-long friends with their room mate, but this is more of the exception to the rule. Others will just be your friend on facebook, but not much else. Besides, you can always talk to your RA if they’re super obnoxious. I had a total of 3 room mates my first year, Russel didn’t have a computer, but read all the time, did cocaine off his desk, but I never witnessed it, and took naps and showers at the weirdest times of night/day. Geoffrey, who is still a good friend of mine, moved to a different dorm halfway through (probably b/c of russel) and was replaced by Zach, who was gone on weekends at his girlfriends or drum line or something.

DON’T DO PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE

When communicating with your room mate, don’t be the douchebag who leaves little sticky notes around the room. Grow a pair, talk to them about the problem.

5. Things You Will (and Will Not) Have To Buy

BEDSHAPED

You’ll need to buy bedding, I got mine from Target. It’ll probably be an Extra-Long Twin size.

A ROOM FULL OF MIRRORS

Bring stuff for your wall, pictures of family, pets, etc. for when you’re feeling homesick.

FOOD

A lot of times you’ll be required (or just get) a meal plan. This varies by school, and often the school will have multiple different options for food.

LAUNDRY

Ask someone how to do laundry before you get there. You may need quarters.

APPLIANCES

Talk to your room mate if you can, you’ll only need 1 microwave. I got by fine with a laptop and without a TV.

A TEXTBOOK SITUATION

You’ll probably drop a good $4-500. on books. However, you won’t necessarily need them for each class. You will need it for classes like Calculus and Organic Chemistry, but classes like US GOV, it’ll depend on the teacher. They may say in the first class whether or not you’ll need it. NOTE: It may be cheaper to buy them from other students or ebay, because turning in your books to sell as used only pays you back 4 or 5%, but if you can buy it from someone at 50% it’s win-win.

Update: I just went online to pre-order my textbooks from the Co-op at UT, the total for all my books came to $1,622. which is pocket change total bullshit, cos some of the books are “alternatives” to the required one, or “optional” so I’m not going to buy any of them yet — I’m going to wait until the first class when the instructor tells me which books I need.

PENNY LANE

You will most likely be like most college students: stingy on a tight budget. Adapting to this budget is what makes college fun and teaches you how to suffer live on your own.

In march I was asked by Saint Martins to take part in the ‘Context Redux’ exhibition, showing a range of students dissertations (the ‘visual’ part to their disserations). Whilst most peoples dissertations took the form of a book, mine took the form of a ’secondary reuse’ picnic blanket– made entirely from old cut up bed sheets (which had my disseration printed on) and bird food bags. Secondary reuse is where we take unwanted products still in their original form and use them to make new functional products from. For my dissertation I discussed whether secondary reuse is a viable sustainable design solution for us today in the western world.

Apart from exhibiting, I was also asked to give a talk to second years (who were about to start the dreaded task of writting their dissertations) about my experience on writing my dissertation.

Walking out my door there are people everywhere. They’re buying shoes, eating kosheri and rice pudding with coconut. They’re buying handful sized portions of nuts for a pound and talking loudly in Arabic.

The street is filled with cars all beeping as they fight to get past and avoid hitting the plethora of bodies moving every which way.

My new roommate, AJ, is taking me for an introductory walk around neighborhood, Mounira. It’s a short walk from Tahrir Square–the center from downtown and on the border of one of Cairo’s poorest quarters.

There’s a market across the street. Food and home-stuff seems to be the loose theme of the place.

We make our way through stand after stand of fruits and vegetables, kitchen supplies, stands of flip flops and unidentifiable parts of bloody cows.

The prices are ridiculously low–4 guineas for a kilo of grapes or bananas, 1 or 2 for that much cucumbers.

AJ points out a stand only selling clothespin–probably a lucrative business since no one in Cairo seems to bother with dryers.

AJ knows boys in the streets, cafe owners and a guy who happens to drive by.

I stand out around here, he answers my question. You’ll know them soon too.

He has a “nut man” we visit and I buy the same seed the girl gave me at the soccer game weeks ago. I learn they’re called lips.

The juice man isn’t in. Next time.

I meet the Bowab-the guy who sits downstairs monitoring the building. AJ says he’s usually hard on new people the first couple weeks but he chills out, especially if you slip him 5 pounds ($1).

When I go out later alone he jabbers away in a lot of Arabic, of which I only get the gist.

I venture out to buy sheets for my bed and some fruit for the morning.

No one speaks English around here so I have fun trying to be understood.

If find some sheets in the market which are slightly less obnoxious than the rest. I decide to buy some fruit first.

When I come back the store with the ones I like is closed so I settle for some next store.

I’m not really sure what I’m buying but the man tells me there are two sheets, pillow cases and it’s big. It costs less than $6 American.

He asks me if I’m Italian and I tell him I’m American.

How many Americans do you know, I ask? He tells me 5,000. I’m not sure if he doesn’t understand, he’s joking or just trying to convey a lot, which I find hard to believe.

I walk home past the Sayeeda Zeinab Mosque where lights are flashing and many are loitering.

Over the next couple weeks supposedly up to 1 million people will converge in our cozy neighborhood for a Moulid of Sayeeda Zeinab, Prophet Muhamed’s granddaughter. Moulid means birthday and apparently Sayeeda’s is quite a popular one.

Where will they all stay? I asked.

First I noticed a bright one straight in front. I stuck my head out and looked up.

By standards elsewhere, they might not impress, but here is not those places.

I haven’t seen stars since Syria.

It is reassuring to awake to see something dear to the heart and many traditional Hindus hang an image of their favourite deity on the wall opposite the bed so it is first thing they see in the morning. The bedroom is also used to display favourite objects like statuettes, coloured glass bottles and bowls, carved or enamelled boxes, and paintings depicting scenes from the epics.

According to the Vastu Shastra, it is not lucky to use a broken bed or to place it in the extreme corners of a room. The sensible reasoning behind this is that in an emergency, there should be enough space around the bed to allow a quick escape. For the same reason, the bed should not touch any walls of the room, says the ancient text. And it should be placed so that the person’s head points to the south. This is because the Vastu Shastra believes the body act like a magnet. Therefore, if the head was towards the north it would repel against the north pole of the earth, so adversely affecting blood circulation. This, says the Vastu Shastra, will result in disturbed sleep and tension.

When I went to school, one of the things that amazed me was the way colleges get over on things like books.  I mean I would buy a used text book for $100 sometimes that I was only going to use for 8 weeks.  Then when I’d take the book back they’d give me $20 for it.  Of course they sell the jenk for $100 again since it’s still in great condition.  I would say to myself, “Ya’ll sho nuff some pimps for real!”
