Look at the market

Compare suppliers and don’t be guided by gimmick discounts.  Review all websites and ensure the company is able to manufacture to all shapes and sizes.  Check they are able to design free-of-charge and offer a furniture guarantee.  Also, are they able to offer a wide choice of colours and design options?  Choosing a manufacturer who manufactures their own doors should give you added flexibility with your room.

Check their furniture

Go to their showroom and look at the finished products.  Check how the drawers and doors open – are they smooth opening, are they finished to a high quality, do they offer soft close etc?  Check edges of the furniture, is the furniture sturdy?

Ask (and answer!) relevant questions

Think about what you really want and ask questions to ensure the supplier meets your needs.  Do they do angled wardrobes?  Do they use infills or manufacture from floor to ceiling to maximise on space?  Do they design to your own needs (ie. can you arrange the wardrobe internals to your own specification?).  Does the company sub-contract its installers or are they employees of the company?

When investing in fitted bespoke furniture, it is vital that a home survey takes place to take detailed, accurate measurements and to be clear on exactly what you need and what can be achieved with your storage solution.  Let the company know if you are planning any works in the room (ie new ceilings, walls or decoration) and especially if you are getting new flooring fitted as this will affect the measurements of your furniture.  Don’t be pressured in to making a decision there and then.

Talk about you

Tell the supplier what you will be using your room and furniture for and what you hope to gain from the extra storage.  They should be able to advise you on what design options would be best for you and design to meet your own individual needs.

Discuss and review your proposal

You should receive a detailed drawing and proposal, clearly showing what you will be buying and what you will be paying for it.  Ask any questions you may have on the design and don’t be afraid to make adjustments as necessary.  Ask about the current lead time, the fitting process, how long installation takes.

Know the payment terms

Be clear on how and when payment is required and how it can be made.  Does the company take credit cards, cheques, BACS payments etc? When is the balance due?  Is a deposit required?  What happens if you change your mind or alter the design after you go ahead?

Ask what happens next

After you have reviewed the proposal and happy to proceed, ask what happens next?  Will you receive confirmation of any changes and a revised proposal or order form.  Is there anything to sign?  When will you be advised of a likely fitting date?

Receipt/Delivery of your furniture

Will you be expected to take delivery of your new furniture and store it ready for installation or will the fitting team bring it with them?

Make yourself ready for installation

A lot of suppliers will insist the room is cleared before fitting takes place.  Clutter will delay the install and remember they will have allocated your job for a period of time and any delays could prevent your furniture being finished on that day.  Check if extra charges will be incurred if installation over-runs.  Also be aware that any other distractions could delay the fitter – by all means ask (relevant!) questions but don’t distract them too much and delay them getting your new furniture ready for you!  Make them aware of any decoration works you have had done – the fitters will always try and be as careful as possible but always note it is a worksite and therefore any valuables should be removed and ideally discuss your decorating situation during the initial survey.

You know, sometimes when you look at the difference of how you see yourself and how other people see you, you find yourself examining this huge distance between two concepts.  In one corner we have my vision of how I truly am.  Cold, calculated, robotic in nature, and distant.  In the opposite corner we get the vision of how I’m described by my peers.  Warm, caring, robotic when necessary, and supportive.  The truth is, my friends have an image of me that for some reason does not fit with how I see myself.  This is evident by simply asking them.  During one of our many end of the year celebrations at Garbonzo’s my one friend decided to go around the table and list a positive and a negative for everybody sitting with us.  When it got to me they were as follows:

Negative: “You’re a movie snob”.  To quickly address this, I do not care.  I love watching movies, and I enjoy good movies.  Don’t complain to me because I think the dumb movies you like are stupid.  If you like terrible movies, I’m going to tell you they’re terrible.  You can’t talk about how much you love Twilight and expect me to nod along and tell you that your choice of a favorite movie is FANTASTIC.  Also, on this topic, if you even consider labelling Cocktail as the greatest movie of the 80’s…  I WILL publically slam your ignorance on the internet.  Do not test me.  Develop a decent taste in movies, and come talk to me when you think you can handle it.

Positive: “you care a lot more about people then you like to admit or show.”  Now, this is the huge difference between how I view my personality, and how my personality is described by my friends.  It feels weird, but I have to ask myself if I do actually care for people more than I like to admit or lead on.  The honest answer is yes and no.  You see, I like to live my life on a very simplistic basis and I do not enjoy complicated issues.  This, simply put, means that I prefer my life to be black and white and I hate anything that can be considered sort of a grey area.

What does this have to do with caring about people?  Simple.  I only care about the people I choose to care about.  In all honesty, I have no problem being an asshole to somebody I don’t know, and I’ve even proven this by fighting with strangers in a movie theatre or telling people off when I get the chance.  The truth is, by voiding myself of all emotion except when it’s necessary, I begin to put my friends in the category of ‘necessary’.  So why do my friends and I have a completely different view of who I am?  Because there is two legitimate versions of me.  It sounds complicated, but let’s look at it like this.  There is a Brandon Case who is designated to deal with all of the life experiences that fall under the black category.  This is the Brandon who deals with all of life’s stress and havoc with a cold, emotionless determination to simply get it over with.  This is the robot that most people see, and only my family have ever truly pointed out.  This is the red robot.  Then, there is the Brandon Case who deals with all of life’s experiences who fall under the white category.  This involves my friends, my girlfriend, and well…  Not much else.  This is the robot that my friends see and point out.  This is the blue robot.

So put them in each corner and have them duke it out until one of their heads pop.  Only, which head is the one to pop?  The truth is, it doesn’t really matter.  My friends will always see and experience the blue robot, who forces a caring nature and feelings into the relationships that I deem important, and the rest of society will always experience the other robot who feels nothing at all.  Do these robots really have to fight, or is it kind of a moot point because they are both versions of me?  You could look at the tale of the tape any way you want too, but in the end, if these robots fight nobody is ever going to win.  The truth is, whatever combination of these robots that I use seems to be working for me.  The truth is, no matter who wins this battle, I’m still a robot.  It’s times like this where I begin to question whether the blue robot really exists, or if I’m just able to fake it really well.  That’s a post for another time, but the concept is something unavoidable.  The one obvious downside to writing blog posts where you attempt to examine yourself, is that you actually end up examining yourself.  There’s always room to grow though, right?

The top fabric is for my my draperies – I recently took delivery of them and plain cream roman blinds from Tonic Living. They are beautiful. Made even more beautiful when my husband put them up for me on Mother’s Day. (This man knows the way to my heart!)

The second is for two cushions, sourced on my trip last year to London. I love it’s 50′s feel. The whole scheme was built around this one fabric.

The yellow and grey fabric is to re-upholster a bench that sits at the bottom of our bed. Fingers crossed this and the cushions may be done by the end of this week. I am so excited.

Seeing as I have a new camera I may well post a sneak peek once they are in.

And, in case you are wondering, the yellow bobble is from the top of the bedside lamps. This particular bobble is well traveled as I carried it with me everywhere on my quest for the perfect yellow fabric.

Next up, back painted glass tops for the bedside tables, and painting the dresser. I can’t wait – I am starting to feel like a real grown up…

There are just so many dilemmas and trilemmas (it’s a real word) encountered when it comes to doona-changover time, type of doona and doona size. So for my first post, as a seasoned cold weather/cosiness professional, I’m going to discuss doonas and how everyone who wants to rug up real good can bask in all their sweet sweet downy glory:

1- CRUCIAL- the doona changeover- so many pitfalls I barely know where to start. And by so many pitfalls I mean one: The too-early changeover. That agonising moment, lying under the doona all cosy and content, when you start to feel a bit flushed, uncomfortable. Clammy, even. And in that moist-palmed, sweaty-faced moment you realise you’ve ruined winter before it even began, by changing from light blanket to doona too early. I’ll be the first one to admit that I was once so afraid of making that mistake again that I went a whole winter without ever changing over. So just make sure you don’t fall for that wiley Ma Nature’s tricksy ways by getting keen for cold too early.

2- ALSO CRUCIAL- doona type-

• microfibre- phuq dat shidt. Natural fibres are the only way, all the way.
• cotton- Airy and delightful, and obvs a natural fibre, so in a sense you can’t go wrong there, it does get a bit nippy on those cold winter nights in your draughty attic room on the moors (going a bit Bronte there, whoopsie-daisy.). Cotton has its place, and its place is in summer, and definitely NOT on the moors.
• wool- sheep love it, why shouldn’t we? Temperature regulation, insulation, you name it, wool has all the “-tion”s.
• down/feather- the only thing that would beat a down quilt for Winter would actually be being covered with baby ducks. Sure there would be logistical problems re: being covered with duck poo in the morning, but the pros would surely outweigh the cons. However if you can’t get your hands on several hundred live ducklings, maybe get a duck down doona? Soft, snuggly, and another word starting with S connoting warmth and comfort, you will winter the shit out of winter with a doona like this.

3-SEMI CRUCIAL- doona size- I went along for several winters wondering why my boyfrenn kept complaining about my being a doona hog. Then I discovered, after an enlightening trip to Bed Bath n’ Table that I HAD THE WRONG SIZE DOONA ALL THIS TIME!!!1! I have a double bed, and I have a double bed size doona, but that, according to the nice man who helped me in said shop, only really covers the top of the bed and doesn’t go down the sides enough to cover two people!! Be warned.

So those would be my doona life lessons. Also, if you’ve already mastered these steps and/or you are a normal person who can’t just buy a new doona on a whim (a whim doona, let’s call it), I’ll make a couple more simple yet effective suggestions to keep you snuggly-bug-in-a-rug-cuddly:

1-flanellete sheets- take it to the ultimate warmth level by teaming with the theme and wearing flanellete pyjamas as well

2- get a cat.
