We’ve blogged about cover bands before on TWBITW, so we won’t repeat our general observations about the general suckage of cover bands. We’ll just say that, when your whole career is based on somebody else’s songs, it’s a fine line between having a clever gimmick and being truly weird–and it’s one Tragedy manages to strut along with more attitude than John Travolta wolfing down two stacked slices of Lenny’s thin crust during the opening credits of “Saturday Night Fever”.

In Tragedy’s case, the clever gimmick is pretty simple: they’re a metal band that does Bee Gees songs (or, as they like to say, they’re the tri-state NYC area’s greatest all-metal Bee Gees tribute band…got that?). But as with most truly weird bands, it’s all in the execution, people. Instead of a one-note gimmick, they actually manage to be a pretty solid metal band, with a knack for finding all the right headbanging analoges to the Gibb bros’ disco touches. And they do it without, as far as I can tell, ever resorting to “I Was Made for Lovin You”-style disco/rock cheese. So… “How Deep Is Your Love?” becomes the lighter flicking monster ballad, “You Should Be Dancing” turns into a Spinal Tap/Iron Maiden-style epic…and so on. It’s all sort of brilliantly stupid, in the way most good metal is.

Tragedy’s signature song, of course, is “Stayin’ Alive.” This video features that song and also introduces the band…including my personal favorite, bass player Gibbous Waning. With that name, he could moonlight in a Morbid Angel cover band while he’s at it.

I caught two interesting musical performances on tv recently that brought a smile to my face.

The real treat (for me anyway) was Ray Davies on David Letterman Wednesday Nov. 18. Now I really liked the Kinks in what seems like ages ago, but the Davies brothers Ray and David seemed to have trouble relating to each other over the years and the band had it’s share of meltdowns between various members. Still when they worked well they were pretty darn good.

Ray’s voice isn’t anywhere near what it used to be BUT he sang the 1964 single, “You Really Got Me” with the Crouch End Festival Chorus.
Quite outstanding. A different and enjoyable CD too.

The other performance was the Barry and Robin Gibb duet on Dancing with the Stars.
They harmonized to “You Should Be Dancing.”
And yes, maybe we all should be dancing!
Made me remember going to see a very young and very skinny John Travolta in the movie Saturday Night Fever. Good times.
Now let’s see who in the world did I go with…
Oh my God… it was… it was… my husband. Ha.

Wow, kinda like having a 60’s/70’s flashback… not unpleasant, just kinda odd. Ha.

The two remaining members of Bee Gees, Barry and Robin Gibb, reunited to perform on the US show ‘Dancing With The Stars’.

An earlier tribute planned for their late brother and bandmate Maurice, who died in 2003, had failed to succeed.

Barry revealed that he forced to quit the project.

“Certain things were done by the people who look after my brother to stop me from being involved,” the Daily Express quoted him as saying.

Robin added: “It has been a hard time for us since Maurice died.

We dealt with it in our own way and it has taken the past six years to actually come to terms with it and get together again.”

They had also lost their youngest brother Andy in 1988.

Barry said: “There were four brothers and now there’s Robin and me. And the twists and turns that come about in life – it takes time, you know?

“We’re at a point of acceptance now. This is the way it’s supposed to be and we have to keep moving.

“To even still be around is bizarre for us. So many trends have come and gone but we’re still standing, folks.”

…never let one of your parents try and imitate a Bee Gees song when you’re in a car and there is no opportunity for immediate escape. Don’t ask me why, just take my word for it.

Right, so I am at last back in Wales, back for the weekend to rest, relax, and finish an essay. Damn you Social Capital for stealing my weekend!

Alas, this means that writing any screenplays must take a reluctant backseat in my schedule, at least until I get this thing done. Should have it done by the end of the weekend, then I can relax and let the Wednesday deadline arrive while I sit and get stuck into Lockdown, whilst turning an ‘Ungry shooting script into a scribble-laden mess with my shot notes. I must admit I’ve been rather productive in the actual screenwriting way of things of late. I’m thinking its because Mourners and the Opera are off my shoulders. I need some time away from them before a revisit and an undoubted rethink. Hell, I had another damn idea today, about an old unit of the USAF during WWII, known as the ‘Gentlemen from Hell’. Bad Ad, so many ideas and so little time!

Right, I really should get an early night, off to Manchester airport early in the morning to pick up elder sibling for a brotherly social. T’will be interesting.

Anyway, back to blocking out the voice of the balls!!

Toad the Wet Sprocket is one of those groups I never appreciated at the time but enjoy now.  And Vitamin Z was a great 80’s pop group that never quite got off the ground.

Tonight I’ll be hitting I-94 and driving to Bismarck, ND.  I’m going there to be with my family and I’ll be working from my parents’ house which always a nice challenge.  When I stage whisper to my Dad “I’m on a call!” what he hears is actually “speak a little louder, Dad.  This is by far your best story ever!”  And since I’m my father’s daughter I know that when I’m out in the world I’m just as bad.  For example, I think it’s fair to tell you that I routinely stop total strangers with the sole purpose of making them feel awkward.  For example, some poor soul made The Mister and I tater tots (because we ordered and paid for them, I don’t think that there is a door-to-door Tot Fairy though that would be fabulous!).  When we were done eating these I felt it necessary walk up and tell the guy that his tater tots were sublime.  They were truly outstanding.  And I’m not saying they weren’t but if anyone has ever told you that you have sublime tots I’m sure that you would react like this guy did and say “cool.  Thanks.”  Then you would likely avoid all eye contact until I had left which is pretty much what I should have expected.

My dad told me that he recently covered one wall of his garage with record covers.  I’m looking forward to seeing that quite a bit.  Then there’s my wheels to show him.  This is, of course, my first big road trip with Dotty and I’m excited to see if we make it there and back.  Cross your fingers!

This week’s songs are all ones that I remember from road trips with my dad.  He was the first guy I knew that had installed a car stereo.  We took road trips in a Pontiac Firebird.  My dad was not Chevy Chase in National Lampoon’s Vacation with his station wagon.  He was the Bandit (which is funny because he was also a trooper, so I guess he was Smokey, too).

1. “Bridge Over Troubled Water” – Simon & Garfunkel  -  We listened to this very loud on the way to a funeral when I was a teenager.  We were driving a used car up to a dealership and then returned home in a different car as a favor to my dad’s friend.  My dad thoroughly tested those car speakers.
2. “Night Moves” – Bog Seger  – This song was on a mix tape my dad made for a very long road trip to California.
3. “California Dreaming” – The Mamas & The Papas  -  This was another song from that long road trip to California.  My sister and I sang along and reminded my parents why they wanted kids in the first place, so that they could sing along, off-key, to their favorite songs.
4. “Stayin’ Alive” – The Bee Gees  -  My dad had an 8 track of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack though we didn’t have an 8 track player.  The conversion vans he had for work very much did and were our favorite perk of his job.
5. “Pancho & Lefty” – Willie Nelson  -  Don’t tell Dad but this is not my favorite song but I love how much he enjoys it.  He likes to quote the line “all the Federales say, we could have had him any day we only let him go so far.  Out of kindness, I suppose.”  He also likes to point out the line in Gordon Lightfoot’s “Canadian Railroad Trilogy” where Gord says that they built the mines, the mills and the factories “for the good of us all”.  Dad loves to see a songwriter winking at him from afar.  He can hear them saying “get it?” between the lyrics.

This week Mya and Dmitry were chosen to perform an encore of their Salsa as the judge’s choice dance. Alicia Keys, Leona Lewis and the Bee Gees perform. Also Melissa Rycroft returns to the ball room to perform a routine with her Season 8 partner Tony Dovolani.

I wrote earlier this week about my Ultimate Jukebox project, a series of posts that will list and comment on the two hundred songs I’d want in such a machine. Well, the research has begun, and I can already tell that trimming the list of records to that count of two hundred is going to be difficult.

As a result, I’ve been preoccupied this week. And in the absence of something more compelling to write about, I thought I’d limp on one of my favorite crutches of this past year and see what records I’ve acquired in November over the years. As is usual with this topic, I’ll look at the years from 1964 through 1989 this week and the succeeding years on another Saturday in November. (The calendar for the month’s weekends is already crowded; I have no doubt that I will find a Saturday that requires a quick and easy topic.)

Early on, as I’ve noted along the way, I wasn’t always keeping track of when I got what records, and I had to estimate the months of some acquisitions. I’m pretty sure that November of 1964 brought me the soundtrack to the Disney movie Mary Poppins, home of the silly and utterly infectious “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and the exquisite “Feed the Birds.” That’s the only November acquisition on which I have to guess; I know that I got my second Al Hirt album, That Honey Horn Sound, on a trip to Minneapolis in November 1965.

After that, I got a few years older and broadened my musical tastes before getting any records in November. In 1971, I got my copies of 13, the Doors’ greatest hits album, and Jethro Tull’s Aqualung. The former is still a decent hits album, though my taste for the Doors has waned over the years. The Tull album – one I honestly haven’t heard very much for a long time – is one I enjoyed immensely at the time. I should cue it up someday and see how it holds up.

Sometime in the next year, I joined a record club, and on a November day in 1972, I opened a package that had a pretty good duo: Buffalo Springfield’s Retrospective and the Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers. I also picked up a copy of John Lennon’s Imagine that month, but I find that one to be another record that’s lost its luster over time; I only have a few tracks from it in my digital files.

After another blank November in 1973 – there were better things to do in Denmark than to buy records – I found myself mostly home-bound in November of 1974. Rick came over one day with a few records to divert me: Blood, Sweat & Tears’ second, self-titled album, the Association’s Greatest Hits, the Bee Gees’ 2 Years On and Odessa, and Quincy Jones’ Ndeda. The best of those? Odessa is a great, if sprawling album. On the other hand, I never quite got into Ndeda although it still has its place on the shelves.

Bob Dylan’s New Morning came home with me in November of 1975. And then there’s another gap, this one a long one. I didn’t acquire another November record until 1982, when my haul was the odd pairing of The Richard Harris Love Album and Steely Dan’s Can’t Buy A Thrill. The Harris album was an anthology that I bought because it included both “MacArthur Park” and “Didn’t We,” the only two performances by Harris I really like.

In the eleventh month of 1983, I got as a gift the Motown-studded soundtrack to the film The Big Chill. I’m not sure what it is about November, but there was then another gap of several years before the month brought me new music again.

That happened in 1987, and I brought home fifteen LPs that month. In no particular order, there was music from Willie Nelson, ABBA, Joan Baez, Simon & Garfunkel, the Alan Parsons Project, Crosby Stills & Nash, the Sanford/Townsend Band, Bob Dylan, The Band, Joe Cocker, Gordon Lightfoot and Paul McCartney. There were also two soundtracks: The Big Easy and Dirty Dancing. The best album of the bunch remains The Band’s Music From Big Pink. At the other end of the spectrum, Allies by Crosby, Stills & Nash is a pretty weak effort.

I continued to haunt garage sales, used record shops and the few places that sold new vinyl in Minot, North Dakota, and in November of 1988, I found LPs by the Eagles, Aretha Franklin, Jigsaw, the Rolling Stones and England Dan & John Ford Coley. Go ahead and blink. I also grabbed a K-Tel compilation titled Superstars Greatest Hits, which lost its apostrophe somewhere.

In 1989, as the first half of the November chronicles come to an end, I was in Anoka, Minnesota, and a lady friend brought me some albums from her collection as gifts: John Denver’s Poems, Prayers & Promises, Loggins & Messina’s self-titled album, an album by Gary Puckett & the Union Gap and an anthology of well-known hits from the 1950s and 1960s.

So what to share from this mélange of November acquisitions? Well, the best album out of all of these might be Music From Big Pink, Willie Nelson’s Stardust or maybe The Basement Tapes by Bob Dylan and The Band. But Odessa remains a favorite. At least one of its tracks will show up down the road, but for now, here’s the opening track of Side Three, the lush “Lamplight,” as your Saturday Single.

It’s 1977 and I’m like totally into disco dancing. Yep. Got into it cuz my girlfriend, Molly Molecule, she’s this dynamic disco queen diva and if I wanted to get next to her I had to be cool. Very cool. Not every day you get a chance to bag a babe with this much equipment!

So but anyway, I’m catching a cool breeze, floatin’ as an oxygen molecule in midnight downtown Manhattan, headin’ for the hottest club in town, “Shake Your Booty Shack” - gonna meet up with Molls & do the hustle all night. Dang this breeze is slooooow – oh wait – here comes a … yes!

Just hitched a ride on a pigeon wing. Much better. Keep flappin’ birdy boy, faster, faster, good … now please land in front of the club? Right about here, slower, slower, aaaaaaand … wonderful!

He lands, flaps his wings, releasing me to the sidewalk, and here comes some hip dude to step on me, now I’m Italian leather.

Groovy. Got me a free pass into the hippest bar in the Big Apple. Love it.

Human brains are the hardest, densest, most difficult to get out of regions in the known universe. Last time I was brain matter it was inside the head of Lord Anu, the diabolical ruler of Planet X. Took me decades to get out of that numbskull.

And just add insult to injury? The DJ just put on me & Moll’s favorite song, The Bee Gees’ “Staying Alive.” Drat.

Just got shocked with a synapse … it’s so dark in here … sigh, so much for a great night on the town.

I gotta get a plan. Gotta get outa here. But this dude is so headstrong!

Entre todas las torturas que han existido en el mundo, esta tortura musical me parece la más dulce. Pero, claro, que se lo digan a los presos que han debido acabar odiando canciones por culpa de tener que escucharlas a todo volumen durante semanas, días u horas (eso sino se han quedado medio sordos).

Un grupo de artistas, liderado por Pearl Jam y REM, han hecho alusión a la Ley de Libertad de Información (1966) para reclamar a la Administración de Estados Unidos que publique el nombre de las canciones que se usaron durante los interrogatorios de sospechosos de terrorismo en la cárcel de Guantánamo (o en alguna otra, ya que la CIA abrió prisiones secretas por todo el mundo como en Irak o Afganistán) durante el mandato del presidente Bush.

Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Neil Diamond, AC/DC, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Jackson Browne, Billy Bragg o The Roots son algunos de los intérpretes que se han sumado a esta iniciativa creada con el apoyo de la ONG británica Reprieve.

No me extraña que se hayan sumado a esta petición ya que, como explica Tom Morello (guitarrista de Rage Against The Machine) no se siente nada bien pensando que la música que su grupo creó se haya usado en “crímenes contra la humanidad”. Encima sin permiso y sin hacérselo saber a ninguno de los grupos involucrados.

Entre la música que se sabe/se cree que utilizaban para estas prácticas encontramos temas tan dispares como canciones de Metallica, de AC/DC, de Britney Spears, los Bee Gees, Bruce Springsteen, Nancy Sinatra o, incluso, canciones infantiles como las del Dinosaurio Barney y Barrio Sésamo (lástima que estos últimos no puedan echarse a la calle para reclamar el respeto que intentaban inculcarnos cuando éramos niños).

Solo un dato más. A pesar de que “fuentes” de la Casa Blanca aseguran que estas prácticas ya no se usan, lo cierto es que en el manual del ejército todavía no están prohibidas.

“The Bee Gees were a singing trio of brothers — Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. They were born on the Isle of Man to English parents, lived in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester, England, United Kingdom and during their childhood years moved to Brisbane, Australia, where they began their musical careers. Their worldwide success came when they returned to the United Kingdom and signed with producer Robert Stigwood.

The multiple award-winning group was successful for most of its forty years of recording music, but it had two distinct periods of exceptional success: as a harmonic “soft rock” act in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and as the foremost stars of the disco music era in the late 1970s. This classic 1977 movie is an ever green coming of age movie that has its roots imbibed in the American culture. And it not just catapulted John Travolta to fame but also the Bee Gees who were the key behind most of the popular tracks such as “Stayin Alive”, “How Deep is your Love”, “More than a Woman”, “Night Fever” and “Jive Talking” not to mention “Boogie Shoes” by KC and the Sunshine Band.

Onto the story, John Travolta stars as Tony Manero, an Italian American, who works at a hardware store in the day and is a disco star by night. His seemingly uncomplicated life revolves around his job, family and dancing at Odyssey 2001 with his friend and dance partner Annette, and hanging out with his gang – Joey, Bobby C and Double J. During one of the rehearsals at a dance studio for a upcoming dance competition, Tony chances upon Stephanie Magano who is equally committed to dance and is a pro at dancing.

This spurs Tony to break off the partnership with Annette and pursue Stephanie to partner him for the competition. A reluctant but aloof Stephanie agrees and together they diligently practice for the competition while getting to know each other at the same time. Meanwhile, changes come in the form of Tony’s older brother leaving the church and Bobby C desparately trying to win Tony’s friendship and guidance. The competition night arrives, Tony and Stephanie put on a great performance but are outnumbered by a Brazilian couple. However, they win the award but Tony brashly hands over their prize to the Brazilian couple, and goes off with his friends to hang out at the Brooklyn bridge.

Tragedy strikes in the form of Bobby C’s death when he tries to mime the others’ dangerous antics on the bridge. The rest of the gang realize the enormity of the situation and return home more sobered up. Tony then decides to move to Manhattan and apologizes to Stephanie and tries to salvage his relationship with her. This is where the film ends.

Its a film very beautifully taken and portrayed. While certain scenes might be considered crude, it just forms part of the whole concept of growing up into adulthood. But if you’d compare it with the current chickflicks or coming of age movies, it is definitely bold for the 70s flick. I enjoyed watching it as much as my parents had done then. The music is absolutely magical and melodic. There is that perpetual rhythm that you’d dance to anyday.
