Bee movie, co-produced by Jerry Seinfeld, gave me ample amount of thinking over the weekend. As much as I enjoyed the cracks, the usual Seinfeld pessimism, the feeling an adult gets when they are watching a film 60% designed for kids, but identify a joke aimed at entirely at adults (that feeling is usual humour, plus the shiver of wisdom and age), for example the joke at the end where the mosquito (voiced by Chris Rock) claims that being lawyer will come easy to him since he is already a blood-sucking parasite, and another joke where on guessing who Barry is in love with, a friend enquires ‘its not a wasp is it, what will your Mother say (one can hardly deny that this sounds to me like a typical Jewish Mother’s concern that her Jewish son has fallen in love with a wasp, that is to say a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant)’.

What struck me also, obviously, was the explicit political message of the honey stealing and the corporate lobby. Barry, the bee, on realising that humans are sucking the labour from bees in order to gain profits, exploiting those bees to boot, he takes the local honey firm to court, and after some glorious ups, and far fewer downs, wins the case against the fat-cats (and bears). A platform for anti-capitalist Dreamworks? Hardly likely, consider what Philip French of the Observer wrote about the film at the time;

Winning the case leads to the imminent destruction of the world’s ecology, so Barry must become a hero by putting the bees back to work spreading pollen around the globe 24/7. The message is the old one that ‘the rich man in his castle, the poor man at the gate, He made them high and lowly and ordered their estate’. With its call to restore the old order and respect the self-sacrificing Stakhanovite, Bee Movie should go down well in Putin’s Russia.

True that what was to follow the court case did little to vindicate Barry’s excellent performance, in fact it brought harm to the eco-system. Not very progressive at all. That is if what goes for progressive these days is a realignment with the old situationist-esque mantra destroy work!

In actual fact what the bee community finds out over the period of the court case is that the value of their labour has only been amassing a surplus for the corporate thief. But what happens when the bees stop working altogether is the same as what would happen if workers of all stripes (not just bee stripes!) stopped working; the stasis of the economy would suffer and go stagnant – haven’t all good economists warned the capitalists of this fact, and is this not why they create what Marx called ‘a reserve army of labour’?

Well luckily in the bee world there is full employment, which means there is a perfect situation, you screw us over, we destroy ecology, the ball is in our court. Of course, being bees, and obviously nice, they don’t leave ecology to become destroyed, they resume work. Perhaps the bees become unionised, perhaps conditions are improved, perhaps there is a colony takeover where the bees run and divide the profits of the honey, we will never know, but in the strictest observance of the analogy, the workers realise the power they have over natural resources, realise that bastards are ripping them off for profit, but that the solution is not to suffer everybody.

And suffer everybody bees can certainly do. On a recent arrival of a mysterious disease, it was starkly remembered that bees help maintain about a third of the human diet by way of insect-pollinated plants. For the bee, providing for the human diet comes at a dark price for the bee’s sexual dignity in that the bee has to perform what is called pseudocopulation, which in basic terms is the attempt at copulation by a male insect (in this case the bee) with a female flower. The bee, attracted to the scent or sight of the flower, may well try to have his end away with it, knowing little or nothing about its being a flower at all. The flower is involved in a matter of deception.

The bee himself is wooed, in the case of the orchid, by the release of osmophores which are identical to the pheromones let-off by the species. Common, too, is the occurrence of visual mimicry in plants where a flower might appear like a sexually receptive female, in the case of the orchid it might appear as female Hymenoptera so as to be inseminated by an unlucky male of this order, only for him to find that he has been duped, probably humiliated and will, no less, carry a stigma (!).

The premise of the film, for kids, is not to be unkind to bees and to respect the lives of all creatures, like Vanessa does. The wider structure of the film surely points out that taking for granted the sum of the workforce may one day come back to haunt those who do.

But about Dreamworks’ intentions, what was it that Nick Cohen said about his rich friends, that they own books by John Pilger, Naomi Klein, Michael Moore etc etc, lets not forget that its fashionable to hold humanitarian views now because they tend not to disturb the true functioning of the economy (see Zizek’s analysis on violence for further details). This could provide some explanation as to why we hate the honey company’s CEO throughout. Or Philip French could be right, the film incidentally did screen better in Russia than it did the UK, but it is a tad bigger in size.

Don't Be an Itchy Flea

We all live in collectives [of some level] of intelligence, collectives of existence, alternate universes, cognizant or not. Some collectives of intelligence are on the evolutionary scale of a microbe as to a human being. This is not just an analogous, this is truth, and we are all just units, of inputs of perspective, perception which are members of intelligent collectives. Some collectives of intelligence have existed, ‘longer than others’, or better understanding, not existed longer than others, because existence is a constant, as well as time, but to be more precise, some collectives of intelligence have existed on a level, which allows for permeable translation of energy, information transfer, sometimes it’s a one way transfer, but other times its a mutual exchange of information to allow each of these collectives to grow and collapse, as they desire, in and out, of what we would call existence. The more a particular type of collective intelligence has a mutual exchange of information with other collectives, the greater an understanding it can have of existence itself.

That said, if let’s say fleas all could speak with one another, were intelligent, but fought for resources, they were a so called collective of intelligence, but a nuisance to let’s say each other, and quite possibly in the grand scheme of things, they were a nuisance to the other things within existence, such as the dogs, which they survive upon. Well, a plain old wild dog can just sometimes bite them off. If these dogs belong to a larger collective intelligence, let’s say humans, well, then a human might just go bring the dog to the vet, and get the fleas cleaned off, and maybe even get them a flea collar to prevent them from ever existing.

I’d analogously represent us, the human, flesh and blood, collective to that of the flea, and the dog, well, let’s just say, we are very, very, very, very, low, on what could only be understood by human’s as ‘the food chain’, even though ‘food chain’ on higher plains of collective intelligence are irrelevant. Let’s just try to get the closest analogous representation to a higher collective intelligence, let’s just hypothetically say the Earth herself, and the Sun, are collectives of intelligence, and we may just be like fleas to the Earth. Well, if the Earth gets annoyed, it might just try to bite us off with like with earthquakes, volcanoes, etc. That’s if she’s a wild, rogue, dog.

But let’s then just say that the Earth belongs to a wider collective, or joins one, just to get rid of this pesky nuisance called humans. Well, we could have that whole flea collar, vet thing happen. Nasty stuff.

But let’s just then say that this wider collective, lets analogously say the dog, e.g. the Earth, is brought to the vet., and this very smart veterinarian, which belongs to this larger collective of doctors figures out that if the flea acts in a certain way, under certain circumstances, it could be a positive force in the wider collective existence. Initially, well, the veterinarian, even though it would be considered a sophisticated Doctor, prominent within its own collective, and maybe rightfully so, based on their current understanding of existence, figures out that if you use the blood of these fleas, extract it, well then poof, you’ve got yourself a cure.

However, let’s say this vet decides to discuss the idea with other doctors outside their field, let’s just say, the larger community of doctors, and not just vets, but doctors of other fields, analogous to the ‘other collectives of intelligence’, like an exchange of information with specialists in other fields, and now they collectively agree that if the fleas’ blood is extracted during a particular life cycle, it could produce all types of cures for things, but the catch is the flea needs ‘to exist in a certain way’ before the ‘magic juice’ can be extracted.

Well, at first, the doctors try grooming the fleas, creating environments, and that works in some ways, then the doctors discover that the fleas actually evolve (if we eliminate time, because we understand that it takes millions of years to evolve), to become cognizant of what’s going on. “Hey, these doctors are creating environments for us, and then taking something from us.” It’s kind of like, but not exactly like ‘The Bee Movie’

Bee Part Of the Collective of Collectives, but don't avoid the truth

So the fleas go on strike or revolt because they feel they are being taken advantage of, and maybe the intelligent collective, the fleas sometimes benefit, and maybe they don’t. Point is, existence, the ability to “zoom your focus” of existence is diminished. It’s like being stuck with a 35 – 72 mm lens for the rest of your existence, and not being able to observe a bird’s natural habitat, if you’re a bird lover, and want to understand your own greater love of thyself through birds. Or if you’re a microbiologist, same analogy, you’re stuck with an xxx lens for your microscope, and can’t get past some area of focus.

Point is, in ‘the Bee Movie’ though, Bees realize they need to do what they ‘naturally do’ to help the wider collective, and I get that. Some of the bees even enjoy ’doing their jobs’ no matter how mundane it may seem to the others. However, we must remember that we live in a boundless multiverse, where infinite, alternate universes exist. Another point is, if you destabilize a collective, even a collective of intersecting collectives, rarely anyone wins. Darwin thinks the strong survive, or step on an ant hill, and they’ll just build a bigger one, right? Well, sometimes that’s true, but sometimes that can be bad, at least if we are talking about a greater understanding, and building a wider focus to existence, or want to have as many interchangeable lens as you possibly can to zoom or widen your focus. If you kill the queen of a particular bee colony, you may kill off the colony, and not have that influence in your life, but you’ve just unknowingly terminated your eventual path of existence.

Like one of my favorite writers, Douglas Adams wrote about in ‘the Restaurant at the End of the Universe’, where this planet of people got rid of all their seemingly useless people, used car salesmen, phone sanitizers, etc., by sending them to another planet, which winds up being Earth, the original planet dies of a plague from a dirty phone, which could have been avoided by the phone sanitizers.

All Jobs / Perspectives are Valuable in a Collective, even Phone Sanitizers

Trouble is, if we suddenly can see with the best lens ever, we might go blind, bump into walls, or like the moth to a flame, and bump into the Sun. More likely, if we zoom in or out too quickly, we lose the perspective, and the image of what we think we see, and we may make make rash decisions based upon incorrectly analyzed information. The tricky bit, is figuring out a progression, that’s a stabilizing matrix, a collective of collective intelligences, which can expand and contract, or collapse at will, and can, well, be stable.

Next time we’ll discuss Penicillin.

Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Michael Richards will appear together in five episodes of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm this fall.

Perhaps this will break the “Seinfeld curse” that led to post-show career challenges for the foursome.

Dreyfus has faired the best, playing the title role in CBS’ The New Adventures of Old Christine since 2006. But before she won the Emmy for this performance, she appeared in the short-lived failure Watching Ellie.

Alexander had back to back canceled series with Bob Patterson and Listen Up, while Richards hasn’t appeared on a TV series since his seven episodes of The Michael Richards Show in 2000.

Seinfeld himself has avoided TV projects in favor returning to stand up and writing/voicing the animated film Bee Movie.

Will their reunion with Larry David be the start of something good for these actors? Only time will tell. Which of Jerry’s pals are you most excited to see on Curb Your Enthuiasm? Voice your choice in today’s featured poll. The season seven premiere is will be on September 20th.

Kung Fu Panda / Bee Movie: Only watched these films because Sky are having an animation season at the moment and the visuals are usually nothing short of stunning. Despite being from the same studio, and only a year apart Kung Fu Panda is a far superior film in every sense: story, characters, voice acting, gags, audio mix, and entertainment factor. KungFu Panda also looks a thousand times better, you just get the feeling that the team paid more attention to detail; definitely the best-looking animation I’ve seen with vibrant colours and rich textures. Don’t get me wrong, Bee Movie’s not the worst film in the world, but it’s definitely aimed more at the kids than the whole family.

Bee Movie: 5/10

AS I was slumped on my comfy sofa the other night, my thoughts turned to the mixed fortunes of two movie MatthewsMcConnaughey and Broderick.

Both of them thrusting young bucks in their day, the pair are a similar age (Mac is 39, Broderick 46) but their recent cinematic performances couldn’t be more different.

Broderick”starring” in The Stepford Wives on BBC One last weekwas the coolest kid in town and nominated for a Golden Globe back in 1986 when he fronted the cult teen comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, turning the high school slacker into a charming rogue.

Meanwhile, McConnaughey made a name for himself a decade later with a compelling turn in Joel Schumacher’s sizzling adaptation of A Time to Kill, winning an MTV Movie Award in the process.

But both have been guilty of phoning in dreadful performances in dull, derivative schlock every since.

EdTV was likeable enough but McConnaughey seems to have become trapped inside the body of the likeable slob of a title character and has spent the past decade lazily playing the same role.

Failure to Launch, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Fool’s Gold and his “new” film Ghosts of Girlfriends Past all seem to have two things in commona lack of originality and McConaughey starring as a buff, bronzed, self-loving hunk with a charming smile and little else in the way of personality.

But despite a lack of effort that would shame a bill-paying, bit-part, straight-to-DVD actor, the man whose 2008 credits include the lead in Surfer, Dude seems irresistible to producers itching to hurl their cash at him.

You can’t blame a guy for making easy money where he can but such a waste of early promise is criminal.

Speaking of promise, when Broderick turned Ferris Bueller into a mid-80s icon, the world seemed to be his oyster.

With charm and confidence to burn, he looked set fair for a dream career.

But the last 20 years is a catalogue of missing opportunities and bad choices.

Broderick’s work, littered with supporting roles, has leaned heavily towards the forgettable and downright dire, ranging from playing bewildered and lovelorn opposite Meg Ryan in Addicted to Love through running scared in the risible Godzilla to failing to raise Inspector Gadget above dross status.

And the shockingly poor Stepford Wives surely marks a low in unfunny movies.

Some of Broderick’s greatest recent film successes have come as a voice actor, with a half-decent voice performance as the adult Simba in The Lion King and roles in Bee Movie and the Tale of Despereaux.

In danger of becoming better known as Sarah Jessica Parker’s other half, Broderick was doubtless overjoyed when his part in the successful Broadway revival of The Producers brought renewed acclaim.

But with a film version of the musical smash flopping, it is hard to avoid wondering what might have been.

More than 20 years on, Broderick is still to return to the heights of his mid-20s fame. Ferris Bueller must feel like a distant dream these days.

We watched the Bee movie of couple of months ago and the opening line stuck in my mind. The movie begins with “According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way that a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway. Because bees don’t care what humans think is impossible.”

Many times our human minds negate miraculous events around us because it concludes that such events are impossible. Events that defy human explanation such as healing and cure from a terminal disease, the barren women given birth, the comatose coming alive, the lame walking, the blind seeing, the deaf hearing, the mute speaking, the captive being set free, those in bondage being released, the dead being raised, and the one miracle that all should experience, which is the miracle of a sinner turning saint when they trust and believe in Jesus, all seem impossible to the human mind.

But the question that God asked Sarah (Abraham’s wife) when he laughed at the promise of her being with child in her nineties is the same question that God is asking today – Is anything too hard for the LORD?

Bees not only fly, but they can dance, because God made them to be able. God has made us in his image (Image Deo) and with Him on our side, we can achieve the impossible as well. Take heart in the fact that there is nothing impossible with God and like the bees, we don’t have to care what humans think is impossible.

Genesis 18:13-14
13 And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?
14 Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

Bee Movie [2008]
Directed by: Steve Hickner and Simon J. Smith

When reviewing Kung Fu Panda, I mentioned Bee Movie as part of DreamWorks Animations’ track record for films, stating:

And although I haven’t seen it, I can only assume that Bee Movie can’t be terrible because of Seinfeld’s involvement.

Oh wow, was I wrong.

Reviewing animation can be difficult, because films that are made for an audience of children shouldn’t necessarily be subjected to the same brand of criticism as one made for adults. The alarm in my brain that sounds when the plot goes into completely ridiculous territory has to be taken with a grain of salt, because yes, the film is a cartoon and made for little kids who aren’t analyzing such things. However, because Jerry Seinfeld is the main star and co-writer of this film, there are inevitably going to be jokes and elements directed at adults (such as a weird running joke involving Ray Liotta-brand honey).

That said, the plot of Bee Movie is so completely far-fetched that I can’t let it go unscathed. Seinfeld lends his vocals to Barry B. Benson, who has graduated from bee college and along with his friend Adam (Matthew Broderick) must decide upon a job in the hive to contribute to society. Whatever job he chooses he must work until he dies, and Barry balks at this depressing idea. Barry wants to travel outside the hive, like the jock bees who collect pollen. He talks his way into heading out on a pollination mission with the jocks and, of course, gets lost along the way and must fend for himself in the big city.

It’s here that the film makes its most glaring error, by breaking a golden rule of animated film: Animals don’t communicate with humans. After being saved from certain swattage by Vanessa Bloome (Renee Zellweger), Barry decides to thank her by speaking to her. They become friends and while accompanying her to the grocery store one day, Barry discovers that humans sell honey, and wouldn’t you know it, bees see none of the profit! They’re exploited and smoked out on farms! Those evil, evil humans.

Outraged, Barry decides to sue the entire human race. Renee decides to help him with legal counsel, a course of action that requires so much of her time that it drives her boyfriend (Patrick Warburton aka Putty) mad with jealousy. After attempting to flush Barry down a toilet, and I’m not making this up, Renee chooses Barry over her boyfriend and he is banished from their apartment. Yes, she breaks up with her boyfriend over helping a bee sue mankind over honey.

Sorry, Jerry. There’s not much that can be done to save such an inane storyline. There’s even a scene where bees carry a plane. BEES. I might’ve been willing to overlook these transgressions if the movie was funny, but for the most part, it isn’t. Despite co-writing the script, Seinfeld and his trademark humour doesn’t shine through. The animation is passable but doesn’t stand out by any means. Chalk another miss onto the DreamWorks Animation scoreboard.

Bee Movie

Visitors board the adapted aeroplane simulator to experience flight as seen through the eyes of bee Barry B Benson – the main character from the movie. Outside, a child friendly ‘Bee Hive’ marquee included activities such as dressing up in bee suits and jump up against an oversized Velcro wall. Gaming pods and face-painting areas as well as free film merchandise and three plasma screens showing film footage complete the experience.
