Madcon – Beggin’

Hip-Hop is not dead

… its just in Norway.

Madcon have been huge stars in Norway for years. One member of the hip-hop duo even won the Norwegian Dancing With The Stars. Other notable fame came when the hosted their own television show on the Nordic music channel The Voice. They have won World Music Awards, have toured all over Europe, have sold millions of singles and compilations, and for some reason have no attention in North America.

Atleast they didn’t until they’re single Beggin’ was used in a Adidas commercial featuring athletes and celebrities such as Russell Simmons, Run DMC, David Beckham, Katy Perry, Kevin Garnett… and the list goes on. Unfourtunetaly Madcon was not included in the ad.

I’m sorry to say operation get a job since I moved to new york has been a bust. Therefore short of having a place to stay at my uncle’s house money to do anything is nonexistent. My uncle owns a house in queens and has a basement like apartment, this is where I have been staying. Thankfully internet and electricity are provided but food and any else has been up to me. When I do get some cash I spend it all on food, as there is no fridge or stove down here. Getting “gigs” are near non existent, Ive been surviving on a strictly fruit diet. Yes basically this is the poorest I’ve ever been in my life, but Im okay with it really. I dont go out, I spent all of my time and I do mean all of my time online.

So why now? Why have I resorted to the literally version of digital begging. Well it’s not even for food, Ill remain on my fruit diet. No! It’s this site. I cant fund or support this site anymore. Aaron is flying in from california on tuesday and we will begin a several month project of making a full length documentary on a topic we feel is extremely important, and most people aren’t even aware of.

We obtained press passes to woodstock on oct 2 to film and potentially interview some members from the transhumanist movement. That adventure will be a 3 hour drive from where Im currently staying at. At the same time we will be going around the city collecting footage and prepping for the singularity summit. We will also be releasing lots of footage online as we make the documentary and begin production on our new official transalchemy video. Collectively Hundreds of hours will be spent on this. Hundred of hours that I will enjoy spending on this with or without food to eat or a job to go to. On my end, Im here for the long haul. Yet it is stressing, I dont know how much money aaron will get here with and feel bad not being able to contribute much to the project other than my time and a place to stay. Unfortunately he is in a similar boat as me not having a job or a steady flow of income as well.

Neither of us should spend as much time as we do researching and digging through this topic as much as we do. Postgenderism took over a month of planning and several weeks of solid editing to complete just to bring to life a story not yet told. Dont get me wrong the site is growing and we have received kind donations from fellow readers, for which was spent to buy the plane ticket for him to come to new york.

The truth of the matter is the work/reward ratio is out of whack with such things. Again I would probably continue to do this to the best of my ability. When I had a job I never even turned to the site for support nor would I. Of course things have changed and I feel we are almost there. To think we are at a critical turning point for this site and the simple lack of just a couple hundred dollars will keep us from putting out some really interesting content makes me feel sad and near worthless.

Especially with content I personally really really want to see made, and it kills me that we are just so broke to do what we do right now. It’s just very stressing on me.

Well Im going to start to create a roadmap of content that will made in the following months, time I should be spending looking for a job or doing something that is more monetarily and career beneficial. Instead I will sit here eat my last apple and say “So what”. Lets push forward.

Here at You Found Music, we want you to find new music so we’ll be introducing and reintroducing songs from all different genres, eras, and regions. Most people don’t get a chance to listen to something international because of the radio we listen to, which forces us often times to just listen to the same songs over and over.

Recently I heard this song on the radio and I was really surprised, “Beggin” by Madcon sounds a lot like Gnarls Barkley. And most of us know, most of the Gospel-sounding artists don’t get plays on mainstream hip hop radio.

These guys are from Norway, and the songs I’ve heard by them are all in English. Good stuff and it sounds really distinct. Sometimes they remind you of OutKast with a more singing approach.

Nothing serious here folks. Well, besides the quote.Just going to mention a couple of artists/groups that I’ve been listening to A LOT today.  I don’t know if you’re familiar with the song Beggin’ by Madcon, which is a hip hop group out of Norway, but before Madcon there was this fantastic group called Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.  This group together had over 25 top 40 hits with songs such as Walk Like A Man, Sherry and of course, Beggin.  Madcon’s version is not too bad considering it sounds like something the Roots could come up with, but the original is just so smooth and soulful that it is hard to oversee.  I can imagine myself at a sock hop doing the mash potato or something along those lines.  My father always gives me a hard time about music today by comparing it to his time and I have to agree that music back in the day seemed so pure.  There are, of course, groups that come out who can provide some ammo for my talks with dad, but most of the time I’m stuck agreeing with him.  Anyways, video to come later in the post.

The second part of my post has to deal with one of my favorite and most underrated groups, Field Mob.  I happen to believe that if it wasn’t for the politics of the hip hop business these guys would have made some real noise.  I just love the fact at any given moment they can surprise you with lyrics and a melodic almost out of control flow over a beat.  They had there first single, Tired of Being Lonely, which was probably to suffice the higher ups.  But seriously, a lot of there songs after that were completely overlooked and abandoned by most listeners(besides Georgia On My Mind).   As it is, Smoke inked with an Indie Label out in Arizona and has a solo album coming out in 2010.  Shawn Jay inked with Universal and is currently working on a solo album but no date has been announced for the release.

The last few months I’ve been thumped in the chest.  A deep pressure pushes up whenever I am walking down the street and I see someone who is holding a sign and begging for change.

I’ve always  given whenever I have had money in my pocket.  I usually will supplement that with some food if there is anything around, but lately it has taken root in my mind that this is something that none of us should tolerate.

I’m talking about the rate of homelessness in the United States and how so many of us never even stop to think “what if?”  I’m talking about how so many of us can coldly walk by a fellow person and ignore that they exist.  I’m talking about treating each other cruelly, the cruelty of ignoring.

Ignoring someone is the ultimate damage we can do to someone.  It is as if we don’t even want to acknowledge their existence and we are ashamed of our own capacity to end up in that same situation.  No one on the street thought it would happen to them and the miniature pleasures they can feel while high or drunk is nothing compared to the deep seeded darkness that surrounds their hearts.

I walk by them nearly every day and I see them asleep and drowning their own self loathing in the respite of unconsciousness hoping that they never wake up.  I’ve seen the looks in their eyes that would turn a heart to stone.  I’ve seen the depth of despair.

What can we do about it?  That is a question people ask me all the time.  They say that they are only one person who can only do so much.  I say it only takes one person to make someone stand up and realize that they are valuable and necessary.  We all matter and the fact that any of us are even here is mathematically impossible.

It is starting to tear at me every time I see another join the ranks of the forgotten and it makes me yearn for justice.  It makes me cringe when I see myself buying a new shirt for twenty dollars when that could be the difference between shelter and the cold for someone for the next two days yet I pull out the Visa and scratch away another piece of self respect.

I see people battering away at their own hearts denying the natural concern we feel for each other.  I see people holding back and flinging their arm around their food bowl, hackles raised and growling.

I see blame replacing compassion and blind compassion replacing lifting people up.  I see throwing a man a fish instead of giving him a pole.  It is as if we choose between two ways of interacting with those who need help.  We chuck a quick quarter their way and head down bowl our way through the crowds, or we give them the help they need in a manner that keeps them needing us.

Sometimes the way to help someone the best is to get out of their way.  Sometimes that person that we’ve gotten clean and gotten job training will no longer need us.  That should be our purpose if we choose to help.  Any philanthropic organization should be planning to do such a good job it goes bankrupt.  Sustainable non profits should be an oxymoron.

I first heard this song when Madcon performed it at the World Music Awards Show on November of last year and though I liked it, I didn’t make a note to research it.  It has come back to me over and over here and there until I finally decided to look it up because it had ingrained itself inside my head to the point that I need to find out “who bloody sings this?!” and now I know.

As it turns out, Madcon are a Norwegian urban duo and Beggin’ has been a massive hit for them around Europe since last year.  Originally recorded by The Four Seasons in 1967, reaching #16 on the billboard Hot 100, Madcon’s version is a total re-recording of the original.  It’s cachier than my previous brain-worn: Asher Roth’s Be By Myself and just as danceable/awesome.  Check it out.
