All-Star Fan Balloting begins TuesdayNovember 27, 2009

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League has announced that 2010 AHL All-Star Classic Fan Balloting presented by Reebok will begin Tuesday, December 1, at noon EST, exclusively on the official Web site of the AHL, theahl.com.

Fans will have the opportunity to vote for the most deserving AHL players by visiting theahl.com and completing the official Reebok AHL All-Star Fan Ballot. The players receiving the most votes by position will earn berths in the starting lineups of both the Canadian AHL All-Star team and the PlanetUSA AHL All-Star team at the 2010 Time Warner Cable AHL All-Star Classic, to be held Jan. 18-19 at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine. A committee of AHL coaches will select the remaining All-Stars, and all 29 clubs will be represented on the final rosters.

By completing the official ballot, fans will be entered to win a grand prize of a team-signed authentic 2010 AHL All-Star jersey. Ten more winners will each receive an official 2010 AHL All-Star Classic T-shirt.

On-line fan balloting at theahl.com will end at 11:59 p.m. EST on Sunday, December 27, 2009.

Of the 488 players to take part in the AHL All-Star Classic since 1995, more than 93 percent have competed in the National Hockey League, including Patrice Bergeron, Brad Boyes, Dan Boyle, Daniel Briere, Brian Campbell, Zdeno Chara, Rick DiPietro, Miikka Kiprusoff, Kari Lehtonen, Ryan Miller, Zach Parise, Bobby Ryan, Martin St. Louis, Jason Spezza, Eric Staal and Tomas Vokoun.

The suggestion for today is about protecting the rights of children. Here in Australia it is sometimes said that children have more rights than their parents and to some extent this does appear to be a sound argument. More needs to be done to ensure parental rights in the area of discipline (note I didn’t say child abuse), etc.

However, throughout the world children face regular exploitation and abuse. The more that can be done to prevent this sort of abuse the better.

Skoda has commenced production of a new four-cylinder engine which will be shared between itself, Audi, Volkswagen and Seat.

The all-new 1.2-litre design is a supercharged, direct fuel injection unit capable of producing 77kW and will carry the TSI (Turbo Stratified Injection) family name.

Skoda BOD chairman, Reinhard Jung, said the engine was designed specifically to minimise CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.

“This brand new TSI engine provides a unique opportunity of combining environmental friendliness with a well-balanced driving performance.

“With substantially lower CO2 figures, this new engine needs to be seen as a contribution to a significant reduction of average emission volumes in our cars,” he said.

The new engine has forced the expansion of Skoda’s manufacturing plant in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic, which yesterday celebrated 110 years of constant engine production.

Skoda’s head of engine manufacturing, Milan Stanek, was delighted with the decision to produce the new TSI at Mladá Boleslav, a site that made more than 270,000 engines and half a million transmissions last year.

“This new unit is going to be one of the most important engines for the company, and we are indeed pleased that it is our plant that is going to manufacture it.”

November 18 marked the 110th anniversary of the first official ride on a Laurin & Klement motorbike produced at Mladá Boleslav in 1899.

Skoda Works acquired the engine plant in 1925 which later went on to become the Skoda Auto we know today.

Ho Chi Minh City is planning six major events to celebrate Tet in February 2010, its People’s Committee said.

The Nguyen Hue Flower Street, an annual event that is highly popular with the public, themed Xuan binh minh (The dawn of Spring) this year, will be held from February 11 to 16. The lunar New Year falls on the 14th.

The Tet flower show on Nguyen Hue Boulevard in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City will be riot of colors and fragrances. A traditional music performance and folk games will be organized on Le Loi Boulevard on the closing day.

One of the highlights will be the Banh Tet (cylindrical glutinous rice cake) festival features Banh Tet making competition.

There will be Banh Tet ceremonies at the Hung Kings temple in District 9 and Ton Duc Thang museum in District 1. The kings are the mythical founders of the nation.

Cakes will be gifted to poor families and disadvantaged children on February 13.

Fireworks shows will be held at seven places around the city and broadcast live on Ho Chi Minh Television on New Year’s Eve.

The “lighting the streets’ program will see some main boulevards like Nguyen Hue, Le Loi, Dong Khoi, and Le Duan decorated with thousands of colorful lights from December 18 to January 5 for the western New Year and from February 2 to 21 for the Vietnamese New Year.

Music and light shows titled “A Moment to Welcome the New Year” will be held on Nguyen Hue Street on the night of December 31.

Enterprises located on streets where the festival will be held will decorate the front of their offices from February 11 to 16.

General Motors Co. says it lost $1.2 billion US from the time it left bankruptcy protection through Sept. 30, far better than it has reported in previous quarters and a sign that the auto giant is starting to turn around its business.

The company also said it will begin repaying $6.7 billion US in U.S. government loans, with an initial $1.2-billion US payment expected in December. The repayment plan is scheduled over eight quarters, but it’s possible that GM could have the entire loan paid off by June 2010, CEO Fritz Henderson said.

“Our commitment is to be accountable, to begin repaying that loan,” he said. “It’s important to do, it’s something we can do, it’s something we’ve agreed to do [and] that process begins now.”

Of that $1.2-billion US initial payment, $192 million US will make its way to Canada, as the first phase of repaying the $1.5 billion Cdn that the company owes to the federal and Ontario governments, the company said in a release.

It was not immediately clear what percentage of the $192 million would go to Ottawa and what would go to Ontario. The loans have a scheduled maturity date of July 2015.

The company cautioned that the earnings numbers do not adhere to standard accounting rules and cover only the part of the quarter after GM left Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on July 10.

Chief financial officer Ray Young said it’s impossible to compare the third-quarter results to any previous quarter because GM is still reviewing the value of its assets and liabilities post-bankruptcy to comply with generally accepted accounting practices, known as GAAP.

“Direct comparisons are not necessarily applicable. You can make some judgments in terms of trends,” Young said.

“We have significantly more work to do, but today’s results provide evidence of the solid foundation we are building for the new GM,” Henderson said in a statement.

Progress being made

In terms of the company’s Canadian operations, Henderson declined to comment on plans for the CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ont., a facility it shares with Suzuki. Earlier this month, the company added an extra shift to keep up with demand for Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrains, but Suzuki currently has no manufacturing presence at the site.

“We’d prefer not to comment publicly, but discussions are ongoing [with Suzuki],” Henderson said.

Despite the cautiously positive news, the company confirmed that it has no current plans to hire back any of the roughly 7,000 of workers it has recently idled.

“In terms of jobs, there is no change in status. Our production plans are set for the fourth quarter,” Henderson said.

GM maintains the numbers show a company making progress, riding dramatically reduced structural costs to a far better performance than the $6 billion US loss GM reported in the first quarter, the last full quarter for which its numbers met accounting standards.

GM took in $3.3 billion US more cash than it spent for the third quarter, far better than the $10 billion US the company burned through during the first quarter.

Its third-quarter revenue totalled $26.4 billion US, also an improvement over the first quarter when it saw revenue drop nearly 50 per cent from the same period in 2008 to $22.4 billion US. Revenue was aided by sales boosts in July and August from the government’s Cash for Clunkers rebates.

While acknowledging the positive impact of government incentives to induce customers to buy new cars, Henderson insists the company won’t see reduced demand in future because of it.

“In the U.S., we felt the payback for [Cash for Clunkers] in September, but by October we had put that behind us.”

Boost in market share

GM said its global market share was 11.9 per cent in the third quarter, up three percentage points from the first half of the year. The U.S. share stayed flat for the quarter at 19.5 per cent.

Many customers stayed away from GM showrooms in the first and second quarters, fearing the company wouldn’t be around to honour warranties and service their vehicles.

“To the extent that our announcement helps [with consumer confidence] then great, but that’s really more about what’s happening in their daily lives,” Henderson said.

I dreamed I died.  And that was a relief.  There isn’t any trying after death.  My soul was made.  How could death unmake it?  The book couldn’t fit inside the grave.  It had grown in the night.  The wind blew its pages around.  Had I been the tree after all?  A little of my former self remains.  And after all the storms and sunny days, was I the only one who couldn’t attended?  Last night, I dreamed I died and then awoke, not on the other side of death, but to see: the room exactly as I left it.  The furniture standing in its place.  An empty space beside me.  My wife busy downstairs.  My whole life lives inside this house.  My house contains what I call home.  The world lies where my stoop begins.  If I should die again tonight, I know exactly what to do.  If I should wake to find I am alive, then who knows what happens next.
