The final cache in our Behind Enemy Lines series at Tilstock has been out of action for a few weeks now. The last finder found it sat where it should be but with the lid off and thus it was a bit damp.

Obviously the old hide had been compromised to I decided to relocate the cache somewhere nearby. We’ve been wanting to swap the lock ‘n’ lock box for an ammo box for some time as this fits better with the theme of a wartime series final cache, so I could kill two birds with one stone.

I made up a new ammo box and also did a Regular sized lock ‘n’ lock box just in case I could not find anywhere to hide an ammo box. I need not have worried as a quick scout around in the area just past where the cache used to be revealed lots of great places to put an ammo box.

With that one safely hidden and the co-ords taken and checked, I decided to carry on my walk to the back of the woods, along the back and then back towards the A41 and where I parked via another path. It was a beautiful morning with clear blue skies and absolutely lovely for a walk.

As I was walking along I wondered about the lock ‘n’ lock box I had in my backpack and decided to see if I could find somewhere to hide that too as the woods are full of old buildings which are really fun to explore as most of them are open access.

I ended up at the old Ops building, which is a labyrinth of vary dark rooms, all connected with dark corridors and with doors everywhere. What a great place for a cache and as I looked around by torchlight there were quite a few places I could hide a Regular sized cache.

I ended up choosing a spot that hopefully will not be noticed by any other muggles while looking round themselves. I took my co-ords, tested them and then took a ton of photos of the old buildings, so I could use some of them on the cache page.

Once home I set about writing up an interesting cache page and have just submitted it. Hopefully it will be published very soon.

JOHN Lawrie Lumsden and the world-famous Usher Hall go back a long way.

He won the 1920s version of the X-Factor there as a nervous schoolboy 80 years ago.

And the huge concert hall has wowed audiences for nearly a century.

Now the landmark venue, situated at the foot of Edinburgh Castle, has asked him back so they can share their 95th birthdays.

But while he didn’t go on a Susan Boyle-style fairytale, he was a guest at the Queen’s coronation after four years of jungle hell, fighting the Japanese behind enemy lines as part of an elite special forces unit.And elsewhere in a colourful life he served as chief architect on building projects across the globe with the Colonial Office, now the Diplomatic Service.

Changed

On returning to the famous hall on Thursday, Lawrie, as he is known, recalled the days when a Saturday at the theatre was the primetime TV of its day.

He said: “It is now 80 years come and gone, since I last sang from the stage of the Usher Hall as a 14-year-old boy.

“I was one of a dozen entrants to sing set pieces including ‘Flow Gently Sweet Afton’ and ‘Where’er You Walk’.

“I was singing in a competition in a festival, a festival for chores, orchestras, soloists, rather like the Gaelic Mod nowadays.

“We used to have it once a year and all the schools sent in competitors, I won the boys soloists.

“The theatre was full I think, I remember being on stage, but it must have changed quite a bit since then.

“I couldn’t tell you if my family were there as well, it’s that long ago. I suppose they probably were.”

Lawrie then went onto study architecture at the Edinburgh College of Art, completing all but one year when war broke out in 1939.

Enemy Lines

He said: “I was going into my final year at the College of Art, training to be an architect, when the war began.

“I could have asked to stay and finish my course, but I chose to go with my friends.”

Lawrie, who joined the Royal Engineers was hand-picked to join the Chindits – the SAS of their day – based deep behind enemy lines.

The small force was the best of the best, taken from the British Army and the Gurka units of the British Indian Army.

They each carried 72 pounds of equipment – more than they would load their mules with – to survive the horrors of the dense jungle.

At the height of the war in the east, Lawrie would arrange for vital supplies to be dropped to the troops, carefully building a signal for the planes, without giving their position away to enemy troops.

He said: “I was in the army for 6 years, mostly in Burma and India, and I was in the Burmese jungle for three or four years of that.

“I worked with the Chindits and part of my job was to organise the signals for the planes to drop food to us, as well as being chief engineer.

Tropical Diseases

“The Chindits survived on those airdrops.

“They were very tough conditions and a lot of the men got tropical diseases, I did later and was in hospital for a year.”

“I remember the Japanese chased me through the jungle, they were different back then, very nasty.

“I knew what would happen to me if I was caught, we all did, luckily I never was.

“I later found out that a golfing partner and good friend of mine piloted the planes that supplied the Chindits in that area.

“We didn’t know each other then, and he just mentioned it one day, quite unbelievable, but there you go.”

Lawrie then spent a whole year of his life in hospital near Loch Lomond suffering from dysentery, before leaving the army at the end of the war.

He said: “I remember being demobbed at Edinburgh Castle and they were very good at looking after us and finding us work.

Abroad

“I tried to find work in my field but it was very hard for those in my industry after the war – you couldn’t get a bag of nails without a request form.

“So I joined the Colonial Service and went abroad, and I worked for the service until 1963.”

Lawrie finished his course at the Edinburgh College of Art, before serving as chief architect on many projects across the Commonwealth.

He returned to the UK on leave from the service and received a special invitation from the Lord Chamberlain to go to Buckingham Palace just five days after the coronation of the Queen.

He said: “It was just after the coronation, her first garden party, in the garden of Buckingham Palace.

“We had been outside at the coronation as well, right where all the carriages stopped.

“I remember it was wet, a day like this.

“I was on leave from the Colonial Service and I had been in Mauritius, that was my posting in the service, chief architect in Mauritius.

Wonderful

“I’d done five years out there and went home on leave, I guess that’s how we got invited.

“I just found that invitation in my papers today, I must have kept it all these years.”

He left the Colonial Service in 1963 and returned to Scotland with his wife, setting up his own architecture business in his hometown of North Berwick.

He retired in 1979 and spent much his time on the fairway, improving his handicap right up until the age of 93, and playing golf with the same friend that dropped supplies to his small unit all those years ago in 1944.

Lawrie said that being back in the Usher Hall brought back memories of his early years, and from that one night when he stood in front an audience of thousands 80 years ago.

He said: “It’s a wonderful hall, it really is, it’s funny to think that I’m the same age as this building, 95-years-old.

“I was just looking at the gold leaf guilding around and about, which is absolutely lovely, it’s certainly a beautiful hall, it really is.”

The book of 1st and 2nd Samuel (originally written as one book) gives us a glimpse of who Jesus is in the Old Testament (O.T).

2nd Samuel talks about a man named Abishai (2 Samuel 23), who is one of David’s fighting men, along with Eleazar, Shammah and Benaiah (who were valiant in battle, mighty men skilled in the art of war and fought fearlessly) of whom it is said that He was more honorable and made commander over even the chiefs of the armies of David  (2 Samuel 23:19). 1 Samuel 26:6-8 records that valiant Abishai goes with David to the camp of Saul, going behind enemy lines. We named our Son’s middle name after this character and also become of its meaning. Abishai means – Gift of God.

Romans 6:23 says that the wages of sin is death, but the Gift of God (but the Abishai) is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (who went behind enemy (ha shaitan – adversary) lines to pay for this gift.

In 2nd Samuel, Jesus is the Abishai (gift of God) who went behind enemy lines to be with us as we walk in the valley of the shadow of death, on earth.

Ok, that’s a bit of a dramatic title. No, there won’t be any physical violence here, but at PJD we are equal opportunity haters. We had our Fantasy Football Live Draft yesterday. Is there anything more stressful than the live draft in a Fantasy Football League? Maybe a thorough examination by an effeminate proctologist with Parkinson’s disease, but not much else.

According to the November 2005 issue of ESPN magazine, Fantasy football cost employers $200 million in lost productivity from its employees. According to the August 21, 2008 issue of amNY news daily, it was estimated that fantasy football cost companies $9.2 billion in lost productivity.

Despite some glitches with my Autopilot turning itself on at various times through no desire on my part, it went pretty well for me. I don’t why it does that, but when your Autopilot is on it automatically picks the next highest ranked player on the overall list regardless of whether you need or want that player on your roster. Much like a military draft. That’s how I wound up with Ronnie Brown of the Miami Dolphins as like my second pick. Could be worse though. If you’re not there for the live draft for instance, your entire team is picked with the Autopilot system. That’s how “Kell Hath No Fury” (one of the teams in my league) wound up with kicker Adam Vinatieri as a 6th Round Pick!  Good god. He’s so screwed. But who knows, there’s a lot of season ahead and plenty of chances for any team to Add/Drop its way to the Super Bowl.

Although the quote, “Heav’n has no Rage, like Love to Hatred turn’d / Nor Hell a Fury, like a Woman scorn’d”  is commonly thought to be from William Shakespeare, it is actually from William Congreve’s ‘The Mourning Bride’ (1697); spoken by Zara in Act 3, Scene 2.

My Team’s name is “This Year I’m Naming My Team T”. I wanted to name it “This Year I’m Naming My Team The…”. But the NFL web site limits the number of characters for a team name so that’s what happened. Now probably everyone thinks I’m a big fan of Mr. T or something.  I don’t know what I’d make of an incomprehensible team name like mine. It’s failed to even grasp the meta feel I was going for. Previously it was named “The Ingloryous Bas-turds” because I thought it was sufficiently funny enough to misspell everything even more than Quentin Tarantino misspelled his movie’s title. I had planned to change it later because I didn’t want everyone to think I was some sort of rabid fan of that movie. I just thought it would be momentarily funny til I changed it before our draft. But there we are. Or at least there I am.

When asked about the misspelled title, director Quentin Tarantino has said: “Here’s the thing. I’m never going to explain that. You do an artistic flourish like that, and to explain it would just take the piss out of it and invalidate the whole stroke in the first place.” Truth is, his title “Inglourious Basterds” was taken from ”The Inglorious Bastards”, the English title of a 1978 film “Quel maledetto treno blindato” by Enzo G. Castellari, which was also about a group of American soldiers fighting behind enemy lines. In Italian, Castellari’s film translates literally as “That Cursed Armored Train”.

But in looking everything over, I’m very happy with my team. I have Peyton Manning as my starting quarterback, looking for him to rebound with a big year, not that last year was disappointing for him but his stats were certainly less than we all had been used to seeing him achieve.

Peyton Manning’s record-setting quarterback season of 2004 included the following statistics:
Most touchdown passes in a season with 49. (Had one six-touchdown game, three five-TD games, two fours, three threes, and five twos. It took him to Week 15 to throw only one touchdown in a game.)
Most touchdown passes in a month (19 in November).
Most consecutive multiple-touchdown games in a season (13), bettering the 12 such games shared by Johnny Unitas in 1959, Don Meredith from 1965-66, Dan Marino from 1986-87, and Brett Favre from 1994-95.
Most consecutive games with at least four TD passes (five games from October 31-November 25).
Became the only player in NFL history to throw five touchdowns four times in a 12-month span.
Threw for 4,000 yards for the sixth consecutive season, the first player to do so.
Set the NFL record for highest passer rating in a season (121.1), topping Steve Young’s 112.8 in 1994.
And one near record: Reached 200 career TD passes in the second fewest games in history (106, behind Dan Marino’s 89).

And I couldn’t resist picking Brett Favre as my back-up QB. I just couldn’t NOT pick him. But I might Add-Drop him as the season goes on. Not even necessarily for another QB, but maybe for a 5th wide receiver. That’s the tricky thing this year. You start 3 receivers instead of two like we used to do a couple of years ago. So it’s smart to maybe have 5 of them to cope with the Bye weeks and the weeks when your opposition is strong defensively.  I only have 4 receivers, so I’ll wait to see who maybe has a break out season this year and try to grab him up.

Brett Favre holds the NFL record for most career passing Touchdowns with 464 (and counting). He has a bunch of other records including this one that he shares with Peyton Manning: Both are 3-time winners of the AP NFL MVP award.

My WRs are Marques Colston of the New Orleans Saints, Terrell Owens of the Buffalo Bills (got my fingers crossed with that pick. What was I thinking?), Steve Breaston (who?) of the Arizona Cardinals, and Devin Hester of the Chicago Bears. With Hester I’m hoping that they start utilizing him more as a receiver in addition to his kickoff and punt returning. The Bears had lousy quarterbacks before this season, so it was hard for them to exploit any of their receivers, but now that they have Jay Cutler who’s got a strong arm, I’m thinking now they can call more plays where Cutler can air it out and have the phenomenally speedy Hester streak downfield and run under the ball. We’ll see.

NFL wide receivers can use the numbers 10-19 and 80-89 on their jerseys.

My running backs are DeAngelo Williams of the Carolina Panthers, Ronnie Brown of the Dolphins, Thomas Jones of the New York Jets (who to my astonishment was still available by the 6th round!!), and then a chancy pick with Cadillac Williams of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The average career of a running back in the National Football League in the last two decades is 2.57 years.

I was happy to find that by not picking a Tight End until round 13, I was still able to snag a very respectable Visanthe Shiancoe of the Minnesota Vikings. Maybe the imminently 40-year-old arm of Brett Favre will be tired enough for him to have to throw short all the time to his Tight End.

In 2009, eDiets.com surveyed over 2,300 people to compare over 60 celebrities and then vote for who had the hottest butt. For best ass, previous winner singer/actress Jennifer Lopez, was beaten by actress and former model, Jessica Biel.

And I drafted Robbie Gould of the Chicago Bears as my kicker but am already awaiting the results of putting him on the Add/Drop list for kicker John Carney of the Saints.

I have two Defense/Special Teams: The New England Patriots and the Carolina Panthers. And I may Add-Drop the Panthers for some lucky WR who is just itching to join the mighty “This Year I’m Naming My Team T.”

We’ve got some other fun team names in the league. I like “Johnny Messypants”. A friend of mine named his team that. It’s named after a character I created called Johnny Messypants who would sort of talk in very blase, slow, lazy, weak voice and then I’d make a raspberry sound with my mouth like a fart sound and  Johnny Messypants would groan pathetically and say in an Elmer Fudd sort of voice, “I’m sorry…but sometimes…it’s hard for me to hold it in.”

We also have a team named “The One Cheek Squeaks”. My college roommate’s son owns that team. It’ll be a battle of the Scatalogical Teams when those two teams play each other. It’ll be “Johnny Messypants” versus “The One Cheek Squeaks” playing in the Toilet Bowl.

The sound that farts make are produced by vibrations of the anal opening. Sounds depend on the velocity of expulsion of the gas and the tightness of the sphincter muscles of the anus.

One year a few seasons ago, I named my team “The Johnsons.” I drafted only players with the surname Johnson. Amazingly I was able to fill every position with a Johnson except the Kicker and the Defense. Coming up with a team logo was fun too. You can imagine.

The Oxford English Dictionary says that “Johnson” is U.S. coarse slang for penis, originating from the surname, while Websters adds a first recorded usage date of 1863. Out of the many theories of origin, this date would appear to make the most likely one being related to British slang John Thomas, which was also slang for penis around 1863. The given date of 1863 shoots down two proposed theories for the origin because they come way after 1863:
1. R. G. Johnson made baseball bats in his Sebago Bat Company, burning ‘R. G. Johnson’ onto the bats which were referred to as “Johnsons.” However, the R G Johnson Company records show it was established in 1970.
2. President Lyndon Baines Johnson was supposedly a braggart about his organ, which then became gossiped about in popular culture. Obviously too late to be thought of as an origin of the slang.
There’s another notion of origin that could be possible due to the years involved. The “Johnson bar” is a long rod in old steam locomotives that the engineer would use to control the speed and forward/reverse direction of a train. It is called a “reverser” in Britain. Historians have not pinpointed why this reversing lever was called a “Johnson Bar” in American railway journals of the time, but it documents back to about 1842 in locomotive history.

One of the more satisfying seasons was when I named my team The New Yorkers, and I drafted only New York Jets, New York Giants and in a pinch Buffalo Bills players.  It wasn’t my league; it was some other league I joined, and I remember some wiseass writing, “I’ll give $100 if The New Yorkers win even one single game.” Maybe he was mad that it seemed like I wasn’t taking it that seriously by drafting my team in such a goofy way. Which was true of course, but amazingly, that New Yorker team of mine not only won games, but it made the playoffs! Came just short of winning the Super Bowl! Hah! It was just the perfect storm of a season for my players, Eli Manning, Plaxico Burress, Tiki Barber, my Jets players. It was hilarious.

There are lots of fun ways to draft players and name your team if your heart isn’t set on winning very much. In one public league I was in, I called by team the Bills. You’re probably way ahead of me already, but I only drafted players named William or Bill.  So go ahead and be creative. So I just ate dinner and decided that I needed to watch a movie. I always here of these great old movies that I need to see, but either always forget or do not even have any time. Well right now I am watching Behind Enemy Lines, which is not one of those oldies i was referring too, but still one that I have never had time to watch.
It is pretty interesting though and it makes you think. It reminds me of one of those movies when I was a kid and I would leave the movie wanting to be the star of the movie. Whether it was a robot or a movie star whatever, it was just exciting.
I think though the thing I love the most about movies is that it takes you out of your little world and places you in another, where all of your worries are put aside for and hour or two.

My little brother loves movies and when he finds one he really loves he watches it over and over again till he knows most of the songs and catchy lines. I think he first started doing this after he saw the Wizard of OZ. I had never noticed some of the things he had, he amazes me every day.

What is your favorite movie?

Excluding Michael Bay’s asteroids-are-manlier-than-meteors pissing contest with Armageddon, Owen [Cunningham, ha!] Wilson hadn’t appeared in a true action film since The Haunting (and the only decent feature of that was Wilson’s one-sided face joust with a stone decapitator – guess who won?). 2001’s Behind Enemy Lines teamed Wilson as a Navy fighter pilot with Detective “Popeye” Doyle portraying a Rear Admiral in the then-volatile Bosnian region. Axis of Evil removes all ties to the original and shifts theaters to the always-exciting and constantly-unknown North Korea. Its entire story is based around a “mysterious” explosion on September 9, 2004 (read more here) which was denied and re-denied by every major government, then re-angled by the North Korean government as a hydro-electric plant mishap. Regardless, the backstory is more than interesting enough for a low-budget (although it was never listed, I’d estimate around $6 or $7 million at most) DVD premiere flick, and most definitely more fleshed-out than fifty percent of contemporary studio pictures.

Familiar faces include Bruce McGill (Vantage Point, The Sum of all Fears, Timecop) and a number of older actors which portray generic cabinet and high-powered government positions in a variety of military thrillers. If you’ve been around the “action” section at Blockbuster for the last five years, you’ll recognize a good number of the generals and staff, although Peter Coyote -playing the president- has ears more massive than Jessica Simpson in Employee of the Month (the Dane Cook comedy, not the Matt Dillon heist – which was excellent). Nicholas Gonzales and five or six other wet-behind-the-ears, square-faced, blank-stare actors give mild-to-decent performances as SEAL Team One, which is tasked with sabotaging a three-stage North Korean ICBM tipped with a nifty nuclear warhead. Like all military thrillers, Axis of Evil’s magnetism is not from its lack of dramatic flair (although Keith David as the training sergeant is magical and a truly epic achievement) but from its explosive action sequences.

Writer-producer-director James Dodson transforms a potentially-dull and trite Axis of Evil into a hard-hitting actioner with incredible style and inspiring accomplishments (regardless of its miniscule budget). Since it’s difficult to accurately describe visual realization through words, it is best to state that every member of production was experienced and executed their tasks to perfection. Editing is akin to The Bourne Identity, with fast cuts and cerebral double-vision during action and torturing. Every scene is colored to match with like sequences, providing subconscious emotional connection to the action on-screen. While the characters are nothing new (“I’m the new guy! I’ve been SEAL trained but I still weep before jumping out of a plane,” “I’m the LT! I’m strong and reassure all my troops, and when the shit hits the 50,000 RPM nuclear fan, I go T-1000 on the Koreans with my Vintage Terminator Ass Kicker,” “I’m the black guy, I wear this stupid black sweat thing on my head and say “nigger” 752 times, but am the first to die,” and “I’m the Master Sergeant whose wife just popped out a baby girl, I’m going to disobey orders and provide a lame excuse for drama!”), the set-piece gunfights are terrific.

From a small-scale shootout in an unknown mountain village to pitched gunplay between a handful of South Korean special forces and defenders of the missile silo, Axis of Evil is not short of thrills. Unlike its predecessor, this time there is no alone time for the title character – which is a good thing, because I never enjoy feeling claustrophobic while being entertained. Even more outstanding than its conflict is the military precision displayed by the actors. While I’m no military aficionado or veteran, I am able to recognize when a character is lameassing hand signals or utilizing incorrect firing stances; here, an ex-SEAL named Hash (no, his surname is not “Brown”) trained the cast with authentic techniques, and it transfers flawlessly to my HDTV.

Besides suffering from small doses of originality deficiency, Axis of Evil stands straight and tall on its own merits. If you were curious, I did not compare the individual areas of analysis to other DVD premiere films; I sized them up directly to studio pictures and big-name blockbusters. Even better? Axis of Evil holds up under scrutiny. I have no doubt (I don’t, thank god, have Gwen Stefani) this movie could have been wide-released in theaters and pulled in quite a profit. James Dodson, his DP, and his cinematographer conceal all budget shortcomings with excellent camera trickery and sensational editing to create two hours of time well spent. Even if you have your doubts of the home video market, you can’t really go wrong here.

Conclusion: Stop bitching about Transformers 2 and go rent Axis of Evil

You came into power by having a platform the public could relate to.

You can win by having a new platform the public can relate to.

Forget about attacking the opposition directly. It is a waste of time and resources.
