It can feel weird it is to be on video all the time. It’s not something I ever did before. N

It can feel weird it is to be on video all the time. It’s not something I ever did before. None of us at Grommet have. However, I’ve gotten used to it, mainly because I appreciate what the video medium can do for a story. It’s never about us…it’s always about the story.

But I also stopped feeling self-conscious about video because it did not change my life. At all. (Well maybe I do notice my frequent bad hair days more now. But just that.)

Yet, I had my first instance of being recognized, and stopped on the street, this weekend. I was in Princeton, NJ. My family and friends were waiting in a group while I darted up the street to take a couple photos of a record store. I didn’t hear her, but as I walked by, a woman exclaimed “That’s the Grommet Lady!” My husband overheard her, and said, “Yes, that is.”

A few minutes later I rejoined the group, now talking to the woman and her husband. It turns out she is an avid Grommet fan, introduced to us by a mutual friend, and I was delighted to hear what Elizabeth Casparian said, paraphrased below:

In my non-profit’s office we have an hour from noon to one for personal internet use. Since I’m the Executive Director, I abide by the rule too. But at noon my colleagues and I all gather around a computer and watch the Grommet. Then we go downstairs to our cafeteria for lunch and discuss the Grommet.

Her husband good-humoredly cracked,

If Elizabeth had her autograph book, she would have you sign it.

All I could say was WOW! That was a dream come true. Not the stopped-on-the-street part. That was just funny. But the part about how Elizabeth and her colleagues find the Grommet stories so engaging. I always envisioned people actively discussing and sharing them. But it was so great to picture the scene of this group of people actually doing it together.

I only wish I had taken a picture of me and Elizabeth together. She is my new best friend.

By the way, here is her non-profit, Hi-TOPS, which is clearly full of insightful people. Their mission is to promote adolescent health and well being, through a rich panoply of programs and publications. I am sure they would love their story to be shared too, so check them out.

I’ve taken a slight break from documenting New Falls just because I’ve grown frustrated

I’ve taken a slight break from documenting New Falls just because I’ve grown frustrated with trying to build the town I want with only the two maps available. Hopefully this will be cured with the imminent release of the Create a world tool. Also, after having installed World Adventures, all relationships, were erased so I decided to just move my families into the pre made Riverview for the moment and play them. I’ll start documenting again when I get the Real New Falls town up and running.

I have found that my playing style is very different than in sims 2, and have slowly learned how to truely play neighbourhood wide as opposed to individual family focus. For one, I feel no need to force myself to play families I’ve lost interest in since they’re going to live their lives anyway. For instance, I was interested in playing Woalfe, and Killian from New Falls individually so I moved them out from their family homes and am now switching between each character while their families live their own lives but still exist in the town for them to visit and have realationships with, like real life. So I play sort of legacy, only I move the young adults out instead of leaving them in the family home, again, more like real life. Also, with the mod I use I can just make a family active without having to go through the process of edit neighbourhood, switch families. So I will switch between active households in a day. For instance, Woalfe goes to work and Killian doesn’t. So while Woalfe is at work, I play Killian, then switch back to Woalfe when his work day is over. Or, a town event is coming up that a different family is suited for, so I switch to them for the event, then switch back to the family I was originally playing. Right now I am currently playing three families activly; Woalfe Dawson, Killian Rain, and the MacBeth’s which I have just moved over from a different hood. Three families seems to be the max that I can actively concentrate on at once.

So in my experience prosperity play *is* possible in sims 3, it’s just done a lot differently than in sims 2, which makes sense since it is such a different game.

Here’s a video Kent took while I was teaching him and Sarah a new song I wanted them to lay do

Here’s a video Kent took while I was teaching him and Sarah a new song I wanted them to lay down some vocals on. He seems a little fixated on my marionettes at times…

The song is actually “Wrecking Ball” and not “The Biggest Lie” – Kent got 2 of my songs mixed up. This is the only song on the album I didn’t write. It was written by my good friend, Adam Salzman, who also plays some lead guitar on the album (though, ironically not on this one).

Kent and Sarah have done all the backing vocals on the album. Kent is leaving The Lovely in January to perform in Chicago’s stage production of the musical, Billy Elliot. I’m bummed he’s leaving, but happy for his success. I think he’s a little big to be playing Billy Elliot, but I guess they do things differently in Chicago.

But the Army will ensure, he says, no more extended 15 month tours, and no “stop loss.”

Editor’s Note: After last night’s AC360°, we received many comments about on Tiger Woods

Editor’s Note: After last night’s AC360°, we received many comments about on Tiger Woods, the Salahi’s (White House dinner crashers) and the interview with Judge Marion Humphrey about the parole of Maurice Clemmons, the alleged cop killer in Seattle. Some of you had mixed feelings about the comments from Judge Humphrey and thanks were heard for Jeffrey Toobin’s comments on Tiger Woods, saying it was just a simple accident with nothing to investigate. About the Salahi’s, the majority felt they should be congratulated for showing the flaws in security at the White House. What do you think?

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Thank you CNN and Anderson Cooper for leading with a story about a dangerous murderer on the loose; as opposed to speculation about Tiger Woods’ fender bender and “party crashers.”

This story is much more important in my opinion, and I appreciate your letting us know where the perpetrator probably is. The public needs to know about this man, just in case.

The couple who attended the white house without invite should get a good service metal for exposing a weakness in the SS.

The two party crashers should get rewarded for their stunt and the Secret Service along with the President should thank them for uncovering a flaw in White House security. The weakest link has probably been eliminated by now.

Anderson; my president is sending 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan putting them in harm’s way and the media is worrying about Tiger Woods’ kinda makes one sick doesn’t it?

The judge’s remarks (rationalization) about why he paroled (and later performed the marriage of) the alleged cop killer Maurice Clemmons were shocking. Why did he espouse his religious views (my belief in Our Lord, Jesus Christ) as his explanation for giving mercy? What happened to the separation of church and state? I’d hate to think he commuted his sentence because of Clemmons’ Christian beliefs, as told to Huckabee. Not prudent or responsible. What if the prisoner is Jewish or Muslim? And how proper is it for the judge to marry a prisoner?

I watched the show where the judge that released Clemmon, the alleged police murderer, talked about his decision to release that man. The judge stated he felt Clemmons should turn himself in because of the pain to his family. This was deeply distressing to me that his first comment was regarding this person’s family. What about the police officers families? I am married to an officer and I was a probation officer for 10 years. I have witnessed these types of mishaps in the criminal justice system on numerous occasions. I am disgusted that this judge admitted to having a soft spot for this man. Maybe it is time for him to step down from the bench if he truly cannot be objective. If it was his family being executed I believe his attitude would be quite different.

RE: Tiger Woods. Your legal analyst incorrectly repeated that the Florida police had no reason to “investigate” a fender bender. An investigation is actually very typical when there exists any possibility of unsafe or reckless driving, impaired driving, or any other foul play. They can’t assume the non-existence of these. Rather, they must conclude this from an investigation, even if just a basic one.

I agree with you. I do not think Tiger has to make a statement to the public. What happened is none of anyone’s business. People expect to know too much about the people they see on television.

The press should back way off from the Tiger Woods story – no crime – no story – let him have his privacy -this includes Christine Brennan who has kept up the pressure since day one – people shouldn’t be fed gossip and innuendo all day long on cable TV – CNN – you can do better even if the others can’t. Thank God for Jeffrey Toobin’s voice of sanity and reason!

Marketing has its four Ps, well, it seems the work at Concept:Magic has its own four Ps. It has been

Marketing has its four Ps, well, it seems the work at Concept:Magic has its own four Ps. It has been incredibly busy. Yesterday, I was handling the planning, pitching, practising & performing for 10 projects taking place in Dec 2009 - Feb 2010, here in Singapore and overseas. Among the projects are many customized and custom created one-off shows for launches and conferences. Looks like we might be doing up to 4 or 5 shows for New Year’s Eve as well!

I’m thankful that we still get the first call from event producers for high end corporate & special events. While we not always be able to accomodate the budget, I’m still very appreciative we are the first choice.

Tomorrow, we have a big illusion show for a corporate event and we are squeezing in a number of large illusions into a tight 30min show. Among other acts, we will be including grand illusions like our Crystal Appearance, The Spike Box, Crystal Metamorphosis and 360 Sawing. It is really a unique mix of visual urban illusions that are not seen in any other show in the world.

Given all the high profile public shows we did this year with “Ultimate Magic”, “The Impossible Record“, “Destination X“, “Merlin Awards Show”, it was a conscious decision not to do any more public mega events or shows for the rest of the year. After, there are many great magic events this month organized by many different parties.

However, we will be making a special appearance at the finals of the Square 2 magic competition on 13 Dec 2009 at about 5pm. The client was originally interested to book Ning to be a judge for the competition but they realized their money would be better spent hiring both of us to perform at the grand finale of the competition. So, be there if you are free. We will be giving away a copy of our magicseen cover magazine to one lucky person!

Andrew Nelson is a writer for National Geographic Traveler magazine. This past weekend he was in Miami on a curious assignment. His mission? Without any research or planning, he’d land in Miami and crowdsource the trip through Twitter. The experiment worked, and soon locals in-the-know began following him and making recommendations. On Saturday night, tips from helpful food bloggers led him to the MGFD food bar, where he enjoyed a meal and a view. The story will be in the magazine sometime early next year, but here’s the experience chronicled from his BlackBerry lens. Andrew used the hash tag, #andymiami, if you’d like to find out where his trail of cyber crumbs took him on Twitter, and here is his preview on the National Geographic website (beef tongue gets a shout out!) But where in the world will Andrew be next? Follow him @andrewnelson.

Eric Newland, Hybrid Moon Video Productions

Vibrant Table has been lucky enough to work with Eric Newland from Hybrid Moon Video on a regular basis, and we are constantly astounded by his amazing work! Eric is the driving force behind Hybrid Moon Video Productions, a national award-winning creative multimedia company located in Northwest Portland.

Hybrid Moon produces and directs “Weddings Portland Style”, as well as creating wedding video packages for brides across the country. Their company also specializes in promotional creative work on a corporate level, and they have the distinction of owning Oregon’s only 1947 “Silver Wraith” Rolls Royce Limousine (available for rental for your events). Following his blog is a trip – the latest post is direct from New York’s Bridal Fashion Week!

We sat down with Eric to talk to him about his work in Portland, and it went a little something like this:

Q. How long have you been practicing your craft?
A. Since 1991

Q. Why did you choose videography?
A. Long story short: I cannot seeing myself doing anything but this. I love it!

Q. How did you get started doing video for special events?
A. After my search for a vendor to film our marriage in 1995, we realized how badly the market was in need of quality wedding videographers.

Q. Has anything significant changed in your field?
A. Everything has changed. First started with ANALOG tape to tape editing systems to HYBRID editing systems that were under computer control to todays modern NON-LINEAR edit computers. The look of a finished wedding video is so different from long ago!

Q. What/Who are your inspirations?
A. Alfred Hitchcock! My favorite quote from him is: “An edit is never finished, it is only abandoned”. Also, just sitting down and watching TV inspires me.

Q. What ideas, trends, etc. do you find exciting in the video industry currently?
A. I am pumped to see media delivery change… from the old days on VHS, to convergence to DVD, then Blu Ray and now in to the future being web delivered in High Definition!

Q. How long have you been a member of Portland event community?
A. Since I first started shooting wedding video. I am a rare Portland Native!

Q. In your opinion, is there something that makes Portland a unique place for events?
A. It’s great how compact Portland is compared to other spread-out, sprawled-out cities. The closeness makes it cool!

Q. What is your favorite event venue?
A. There really not just one facility that stands out… I do appreciate the downtown locations. I hate locations laden in dust and I can’t stand uneven ground. It’s always frustrating to see elderly guests at suburban locations trip and fumble to walk anywhere because the owners are too cash-tight to pave walkways.

Q. Do you have an event horror story?
A. Oh, yeah! MANY! For now, I’ll keep them to myself, but keep an eye out out for Hybrid Moon’s Wedding Mock-umentary at your local theater soon!

Q. Do you have a professional pet peeve?
A. Working with amateur photographers. It is frustrating to watch people with hardly any professional event experience ruin a wedding because they really have no idea what they are doing.

Q. Where do you see yourself in five years?
A. Owning a cool hip event facility.

G’morning everyone.

Are any of you shopping on-line today? Don’t worry, I won’t let the boss know! I must admit I’ve been peeking a little bit between weather hits, but most of the sites I’m looking at are for furniture, and kitchen stuff for our new home. We’re closing on the house this week, and should be moved in by Christmas which I am so excited about! It’s going to be a house full of boxes during the holidays, but it will be worth it. I think we’re going to host Christmas dinner as well since my husband won a 25 pound turkey during his annual FDNY ”Turkey Trot!” It’s taking up the whole freezer section of our refrigerator.

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving holiday. Matthew and I had a wonderful day yesterday since it was so mild. We met up with one of my mommy friends and her son for a walk in the park and some time on the baby swings. Matthew just loves the little swings. Central Park will be the one think I miss the most about living in the city. I spent most of my maternity leave strolling little Matt every day through the park. Fond memories.

So, in weather news, I think I’m ready to see a little snow in the forecast here in the northeast! I love the mild weather, but as we get into the Christmas season, a few little snowflakes here and there will be fun — and I can’t wait to see Matthew’s face when we take him out to see his first winter wonderland! Parts of the southwest are seeing some winter weather right now as an upper level low spins across the region, and with colder air in place, some spots especially across the mountains will see over a foot of snow. There are winter storm warnings up for parts of southwest texas, into the mountains of new Mexico and southeast Arizona! Pretty wild stuff especially since parts of the Great Lakes haven’t seen any measurable snow this year which is very wacky.

There’s a pretty significant cold front bringing a mixed bag of weather tricks from New England down through the Tennessee Valley and back in through the Gulf Coast region. An area of low pressure will develop at the tail end of this front, and bring some pretty nasty weather over the Gulf, the southeast up into the Midatlantic and eventually the northeast this week. As cold air filters in back of this cold front, we should see some pretty good snow totals over the eastern third this week.

That’s about all for now. I’m getting a little hungry…lunch time!

There’s always two sides to a story, as they say, but rarely do people consider this before they vent their spleens. Take the following letter. It is firing all barrels at me about a rather trendy Christmas tree that adorned a large part of the mall in 2001. Form your opinion as you read it and then read the ‘behind the scenes’ explanation.

I write with anger at your response to public reluctance to “change” with regards to your hideous Christmas “decoration”. It is clear from the 200 name strong petition that shop owners and customers are unhappy about your ridiculous display. These people are your (underlined 4 times) customers and you are answerable to them. If they want proper decorations then give them their choice. After all. Christmas is a time for nostalgia and tradition, we should not be expected to happily accept a monstrous heap of steel as a Christmas display. Furthermore what incentive is there for people to shop in the centre this Christmas if you are unwilling to provide amusement for children – after all isn’t Christmas for children? If you have a personal dislike of Christmas, tough, but you should not inflict this dislike on 25,000 locals who are mainly traditionalists and would like to see something more special and customary at Christmas than you have to offer. I believe shops and traders will struggle at Christmas this year as there is nothing to draw people in, especially as the rest of the town is fully decorated. I have taken photographs of your pathetic display and I will be sending them to various organisations. I suspect you may win the 2001 ‘Scrooge’ award or the ‘Worst decorated Shopping Mall’ award. I will also write to the owners to inform them of the letter I have written you and my intention to enter them into relevant competitions.

A few garlands and a real Christmas tree would be a nice gesture, or are you too arrogant to care about what people think?

It’s true to say, in business, you shouldn’t take this type of thing personally but this one looked rather personal to me
