I was so excited that the mixer (Behringer DDM4000) had arrived.  Although just now. =(

Here’s my experience about online ordering, international warranty, and Behringer, PSSL.com and InternationalCheckout.com in general.

I ordered it last October along with some other music tools like a good sound card (ESI Gigaport HD – 24bit output 4 channel stereo output, USB input) and a DJ headphone (Pioneer DJS-5000).  While testing it, (I have to test it thoroughly since its a Behringer), I found out that the item was defective.  Other items are not.  The high and middle equalizer in channel 1 produces a noise.  So I have to let the dealer here in the Philippines repair it.  1) They did not have an experience of repairing the product since its relatively new in the market. 2) They won’t refund/replace/repair it for free since Behringer does not have an international warranty.  My dilemma was to let it repair or get it replace with a good one.  Since the item is new, I decided to email and return it back the store paying a huge amount of PHP 9,000 for the shipment and PHP 3,000 so that the online store can process them.  (The item was originally priced at PHP 17,000 + PHP 15,000 for shipment)  That sucked!!!  I was uberly pissed with that.

My experience of online ordering was generally good but there are few things I’d like to remember:  You have to check what products you buy since you don’t have a way to tell if it works outright since you can’t test it.  Reviews doesn’t count if you got a lemon product.  Credibility of the store is a must.  Not only of the store but also with the shipper.  You have to look also for an international warranty of the product; what to do if the product is defective; refund, replace and return policies.  I think Apple products have a very good international warranty support policy and should be the basis for companies willing to have international warranty.  There’s nothing like Apple.

To conclude things out, DDM4000 had arrived yesterday after 3 weeks of replacement + shipping.  Duh!  But I was still exited and tested the functionality right away.  Good thing it doesn’t have any defect that I noticed.  Noise in each channel in each equalizer was gone.  MIDI is configurable.  All knobs, faders and buttons are working.  I will still test it thoroughly though.

“Good artists copy, great artists steal.”

Since Picasso’s death, many people have attributed those words to him. But why would an outstanding artist say something like this? Because it’s true! There have actually been quite a few articles written on the above saying and why borrowing ideas is important for all aspects of art and design — us xiik geeks included.

Since there’s much truth to this saying, I’d like to turn this into a sort of case study between our much beloved Apple Inc. and a trendy music accessory company named Behringer. Both are well respected companies that specialize in very different niches. If we compare their websites, we see a striking resemblance between the two. Go ahead and click on those links above — I’ll wait.

Woah! Almost too close for comfort, right?

Yes, way too close. In fact, Behringer has taken Picasso’s quote and abused it. Obviously, Apple had their website design live on the “interwebs” first and has firmly established that sort of look and feel with their company’s brand over a period of time. It is very likely that Behringer looked online and searched many sources of inspiration based on what they thought was cool and hip. What better site to turn to than Apple? That process continued and the end product — their current website — was launched regardless of how uncannily similar it looks to Apple’s.

To be honest, I’m finding it hard to remain nice here because I believe there is a plagiarism line that must not be crossed, where a design can copy the inspiration for reference, but never the final product. In this case, Behringer has done just that! For the record, this happens all the time. The creative world can be a bloodbath sometimes. We tend to keep that quiet, though.

There are many ways to ethically “steal” from outside sources, but the main thing to take away is this: Make it your own. A concept like this may be hard to grasp from a business perspective and rightfully so: often, a business owner simply wants what works, period. The concept is, however, more or less accepted by the creative world, just as long as the design makes an obvious departure from the original. In the end, it’s just not right to claim someone else’s work as your own. I mean, we’re going back to preschool life lessons now. I believe Behringer would have to sit in the corner and miss nap time for this one.

Mau belajar atau main gitar? Rupanya berbekal gitar elektrik saja tidak cukup. Soalnya gitar elektrik berbeda dengan gitar akustik. Kalau gitar akustik sudah mampu menyuarakan dirinya ketika dimainkan berkat bagian akustiknya. Sedangkan gitar elektrik membutuhkan alat-alat elektronika lain untuk bersuara.

Bagi gitaris pemula kayak daku (*ehm… sebenarnya tidak pemula lagi sih, tapi karatan, hehehe…*), sebenarnya untuk memainkan gitar elektrik ini cukup dibantu oleh amplifier gitar rumahan yang memiliki daya penguatan suara kecil, misalnya 10 s/d 15 watt. Tidak hanya sebagai penguat suara, amplifier gitar kebanyakan juga sudah dibekali efek tertentu yang memperkaya suara gitar kita. Biasanya secara standard sudah ada efek distortion atau overdrive sehingga kita bisa memainkan jenis musik Rock atau pun Metal.

Namun amplifier rumahan berdaya kecil ini memang hanya untuk bermain di rumah atau di studio kecil. Dan tidak cocok untuk dipakai bermain di panggung, apalagi panggung terbuka. Bisa-bisa suaranya tidak terdengar karena tekalahkan oleh suara riuh sekitar. Hehehe…

Sayangnya tidak banyak amplifier berdaya besar untuk keperluan panggung yang memiliki efek seperti amplifier rumahan kita. Kalau pun ada, bisa jadi suaranya berbeda karena perbedaan produsen amplifier, sirkuit elektroniknya atau bisa juga pengaruh dari daya penguatan plus kualitas speakernya.

Ini tentu tidak kita inginkan, karena setting suara yang telah kita set di rumah akan sulit kita bawa ke panggung. Sebagai informasi, seringkali kita senang menggunakan karakteristik suara tertentu yang menjadi ciri khas permainan kita atau band kita. Dan itu akan sulit dibawa begitu saja ke atas panggung.

Lalu bagaimana solusinya?

Salah satu cara praktis adalah dengan melepaskan ketergantungan akan setting suara di amplifier. Kalau bisa kita dengan mudah berpindah dari 1 amplifier ke amplifier lain. Untuk itu kita harus sepakat untuk membiarkan bagian amplifier ini apa adanya, dengan setting se-standar mungkin. Fungsinya cuma untuk memperkeras suara gitar kita saja.

Kecuali tentu saja jika kita mau membawa amplifer kita ke panggung. Banyak kok band-band dunia yang membawa sendiri amplifier-nya ke panggung. Tentu amplifiernya juga yang kelas panggung. Hehehe…

Dan untuk urusan suara gitar yang khas, kita bisa menggunakan efek suara gitar. Biarlah efek gitar ini yang kita setting dan bisa kita bawa dari rumah ke panggung dan ke panggung yang lain. Kita bisa bereksperimen suara di rumah dan ketika sudah sesuai dapat kita bawa ke panggung dengan mudah.

Dewasa ini banyak sekali efek suara portabel yang modern untuk gitar. Dari yang model satuan, atau biasa disebut stompbox, sampai ke yang multi efek berbasiskan sirkuit digital. Bahkan kini banyak efek digital yang berfungsi sebagai modeler suara, alias bisa direkayasa untuk meniru atau memodelkan suatu efek/jenis suara tertentu.

Dulu saat daku nge-band (sekitar tahun 87 s/d 95), efek-efek seperti ini masih langka. Yang paling populer adalah model stompbox. Itu pun terbatas sekali pilihannya. Sudah begitu mahal banget. Tidak cocok untuk kantong pelajar jadul seperti daku waktu itu. Dulu daku cuma mengandalkan ampli yang build in efek. Dan untuk manggung biasanya minjem efek Boss Metal Zone atau Boss Metalizer dari studio. Setelah itu baru bisa beli efek second Boss Heavy Metal dari temen yang butuh uang. Hihihi… dibandingkan Metal Zone jelas Heavy Metal kurang nendang.

Bagaimana dengan sekarang? Wah-wah-wah… selain sudah semakin canggih juga semakin banyak saja pilihannya. Boss sendiri mengeluarkan sebegitu banyak stompbox berjenis suara distorsi. Baru-baru ini daku dipinjamin Bro Adrian efek Boss Mega Distortion (MD-2). Review-nya menyusul yak? Hehehe…

Belum lagi dari produsen efek yang lain. Tambah ruwet ketika setiap produsen berlomba mengeluarkan beberapa opsi untuk jenis suara distorsi ini saja. Hem… daku yang kepekaan kupingnya pas-pasan ini seringkali bingung bedanya antara efek distorsi yang satu dengan yg lain. Kayaknya kok sama saja ya? Hehehe… dasar ngga peka.

Asyiknya adalah karena sekarang efek-efek ini sangat melimpah di pasaran dan harganya relatif terjangkau. Banyaknya produsen yang terjun ke pasar musikus ini membuat setiap produsen berlomba fitur dan tentu saja harga. Sebut saja Behringer, Line 6, Boss, Artec, Fender, dan masih banyak lagi.

Tapi ternyata efek-efek ini seringkali masih dirasa terlalu mahal. Atau bisa saja kita menginginkan efek suara tertentu yang langka yang ternyata harganya sangat mahal. Jangan khawatir karena ternyata sekarang ini beredar efek-efek produksi rumahan yang meniru atau memodelkan efek suara atau amplifier terkenal. Pasti dunia permusikan mengetahui betapa terkenalnya amplifier Vox AC30, SansAmp GT2, dll. Amplifier kelas panggung dunia yang melegenda ini memiliki karakteristik khas dan dibekali efek suara yang sangat powerfull. Rasanya bagaikan impian jika bisa memilikinya.

Namun usah berkecil hati karena kita bisa memodelkan suara amplifier panggung terkenal tersebut berkat efek-efek produksi rumahan. Ada juga sih versi jadi dari produsen efek terkenal, tapi ya itu tadi, harganya mahal. Oke, balik ke produsen efek rumahan, ternyata efek-efek yang dirakit sendiri tersebut tidak kalah bagus suaranya dibandingkan efek-efek pabrikan. Produsen efek rumahan yang bermula dari prinsip DIY (do it yourself) ini telah mampu meng-clone atau memodelkan suara dari efek dan amplifier terkenal dengan harga yang cukup ekonomis. Bahkan seringkali sudah dimodifikasi untuk menghasilkan suara yang lebih kental dan powerfull.

Wah, menarik juga tuh! Nah, mengenai efek-efek produksi rumahan alias DIY ini akan dibahas lebih lanjut di artikel terpisah. Nantikan ya? Hehehe…
