Runner Up: T.I ft Jay z, Little Wayne and Kanye Aka Beauty and the Beastly Ones, this song was an obvious global hit featuring some of the tightest rhymes from the greatest names in hip hop, the M.I.A sample was the sweet, sweet cherry on the hip hop sundae.

Runner Up: London 2012, I know this obviously isn’t till 2012 but aren’t you tired of hearing about the British athletes set to top the medals board, the ever expanding budget, the bitch arse logo? Do we really think any of this crap actually stands us in with a chance in hell of winning?

Here we are, blogging again after a well deserved 9 day vacation in the beatiful island of Zanzibar (Africa).

So what did I miss in the meantime? In chronological order:

1) Iguodala was officially signed to a 6 year-80 million extention (the pic shows that both him and Stefanski were happy for the deal…)

2) Sixers brought back Theo Ratliff, signed to a 1 year contract for the veteran minimum

3) Sixers’ GM Ed Stefanski made a conference call with a panel of selected bloggers.

I had the privilege to get the invitation to the conference from Micheal Preston, Sixers’ PR director (thanks again), but unfortunately couldn’t join it because I was out. I will surely be part of the next one, scheduled… well, they don’t know yet, but it will be before the season starts.

Anyway it’s great to see that Sixers keep us bloggers/fans in such high consideration, and that a GM takes some of his time to talk directly to us. This is something new in the NBA, as far as I know, and hopefully it becomes a trend and eventually a standard for every team. Hats off to Stefanski and the Sixers’ public relations dept for setting up this.

4) Sixers brought back Jeff Ruland also, this time as an assistant coach

5) USA Team won the gold medal at the Olympics in China, beating Spain after a fantastic game. 

My quick takes on the aforementioned subjects are:

1) good move overall, but with some further thoughts. It’s great to have Iguodala locked for so long, but the amount of money seems really too high, considering Iguodala’s poor playoffs and almost the fact that NO OTHER TEAM was able to make him a big offer - that we eventually couldn’t match, I mean.

So if it was Billy King doing it, I’d definitely say he overpaid Andre, but since it was Stefanski… well, he probably knew what he was doing !

2) great move. We needed a veteran back up C, especially after the bad injury occured to Jason Smith shortened the big men rotation. Theo will provide what we need, quality minutes of (still) intimidating presence, rebounding, playoffs experience, hard working attitude. Also he’s a good guy, fans still love him and he comes for cheap… what else would you want ???

3) great stuff. I also love what Stefanski said about Iguodala, Thaddeus Young and Willie Green, read carefully.

4) I don’t know, honestly. Ruland basically replaces Henry Bibby, it has to be determined what happened between him and Cheeks, assuming there was something wrong, of course. Ruland’s resume as a coach is nothing to be excited for, actually, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

5) the final game between USA and Spain was something that will remain in the books, but I think USA team was poorly selected and poorly coached, despite the plethora of bball “minds” working at the project. So I will not follow the chorus of enthusiastic, in some cases pathetically celebrative, reports I’m reading. More to come about this soon.

The more I think about the upcoming season, the more I am pumped about this new Sixers team.

And here we come to another week. Seems long, feels long.

On a great note, I’ve been watching Michael Phelps swim. All I can say is that watching him swim is a once in a lifetime event. Never have I seen a swimmer with such grace and speed. Go Michael!

I must be insane. No wait, I am insane, I just don’t like to admit it. My cousin wants to make it in the movie biz, and off and on over the years- he and I have had a semi hair-brained scheme for writing a horror film. Over the years its had many forms, but the latest idea is something so bizarre, so depraved that if we ever get it written- someone out there might actually want to take a look at it. I’m not posting this idea here… it’s not what this blog is about, but I felt I just had to mention it.

Onto the book- I have worked more on it this week. It’s a slow process, this book revision stuff. I enjoy writing- I would even go as far as to say that I love writing and it has been a part of my blood ever since I could remember. And while I’ve done some good work this week. I can’t help but be down on myself because there is a part of me that wants to be one of those 10 pages a day writers. But I need to calm down and remind myself that I am not Stephen King, and I am not a writer of serials who make their money by the page. I write the way I write. It might take me forever, but its quality, not quantity that counts.

There has been some consternation in the British press over the last couple of days over the ‘revelation’ that the cute little girl who sang at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics wasn’t actually the girl singing. The girl who was actually singing had been deemed insufficiently cute, and hidden behind a curtain somewhere like a diminutive oriental Wizard of Oz.

This revelation has been greeted with incredulity by papers such as the Telegraph. Apparently, this sort of fakery is just not done. It’s not cricket (obviously). But really, what’s the fuss?

I have to say that I have been quite impressed by the sheer pragmatism China has displayed in its organisation of these Olympics. Singing girl not cute enough? Replace her with a more photogenic one. Impressive fireworks a danger to your filming helicopter? Do a digital version for the live TV feed. Not enough spectators? Bus in some appropriately cheer-y volunteers. Infernal smog a danger to health of athletes (and making it hard to see)? Close down all the factories, and ban ordinary citizens from driving within the city limits. Just brilliant.

Yes its fakery and ubercontrolfreakery. But, could you really imagine any western country getting away with something like this? If, in four years time, the London authorities tried to stop ordinary Londoners driving their cars… well, the result would not be pretty. It would probably involve a lot of white van men blockading the Olympic site.

So the girl on stage wasn’t actually singing. So what?! It made a good show. It is quite possible that there will never be another Olympics quite like this one, because there isn’t a nation on earth quite capable of controlling all the variables as the Chinese, who are quite determined that this will be as big, and spectacular, and flawless as it could possibly be. All the moaning on this is just jealousy, because we all know that there is no way any of us (the UK, the US, even Russia) could get away with controlling the message to that degree.

Yes, China is a totalitarian state with limited freedoms and an overinflated sense of its own importance. But they sure do it with style…

Un triple de Kleiza en los últimos instantes del encuentro dio a Lituania una merecida victoria. Durante todo el encuentro los europeos estuvieron por delante, cosechando una ventaja que pasó de los diez puntos en el último cuarto. Sin embargo un parcial de 11-0 igualó el partido a falta de 1 minuto y medio. Entonces apareció Kleiza, que ya jugó un gran último cuarto, para dar un triunfo a los suyos que les permite luchar por el primer puesto del grupo. Argentina no podrá volver a fallar si no quiere poner en peligro su presencia en semifinales.

Una Lituania en horas bajas se enfrentaba a la actual campeona olímpica. Sin Macijauskas y Songaila, y con Jasikevicius en el tramo final de su carrera, llegan a Pekín sin demasiadas esperanzas. Argentina mientras tanto sigue mezclando talento y oficio para ser un claro candidato a medalla. El primer cuarto no tuvo mucho acierto anotador. Argentina comenzó fuerte en defensa y se puso 6-2. Acto seguido Jasikevicius y K. Lavrinovic entraron en juego y pusieron un parcial de 10-0. Argentina apañó su actuación en el final de cuarto para dejar la desventaja en solo 3 puntos (14-11).

El partido empezaba a enloquecerse sin acierto. Un partido típico de un primer día en un torneo importante. Delfino decidía demasiados balones. Argentina mejoraba cuando anotaba los lanzamientos sencillos y cuando Ginobili decidía. Lituania, fiel a la tradición, dependía en exceso del lanzamiento de 3 puntos. El partido comenzó a tener más anotación. Argentina buscaba el juego de Scola y Oberto, pero no lo encontraba. La única salida era el tiro de tres puntos y los tiros libres. Delfino y Ginobili eran los mejores en esto. Lituania mientras tanto no podía correr y tampoco podía jugar dentro de la zona frente a las torres argentinas. Le quedaba lo mismo que a su rival, el tiro de tres puntos y los tiros libres. Lituania está más acostumbrada a ese juego, por eso estaba por delante. Argentina necesitaba juego físico dentro de la zona para ganar el partido a una selección que se encuentra muy cómoda cuando el partido lo decide la muñeca. Asì se llegó al descanso con 34-30 para Lituania.

Tras el descanso Argentina buscó lo que necesitaba: canastas cerca del aro. Oberto y Ginobili estaban acertados y el balón se movía muy bien. Lituania seguía dependiendo mucho del lanzamiento de 3 puntos, pero como el porcentaje de acierto era bueno se mantenían en el partido. Scola seguía haciendo un partido para olvidar. Ginobili y Prigioni estaban con 3 faltas, los dos únicos playmakers. El partido entró en un festival de triples, buen escenario para Lituania, que terminó el cuarto mandando por 51-45.

Por si fuera poco, Lituania comenzó el último cuarto con un triple más. Eran ya 9 puntos de diferencia para una selección que se encontraba muy cómoda. Lukauskis anotó otro triple y una nueva combinación de su equipo les puso con 12 de diferencia. Kaukenas movía muy bien el balón para dar canastas fáciles a sus hombres altos. Sin Embargo Argentina no se rendía y anotaron 4 puntos consecutivos, dos tras robo de balón, que obligaron a Lituania a pedir tiempo muerto. Al salir a la cancha Kleiza volvió a anotar de 3, pero Ginobili le dio la réplica. El partido estaba expectacular. Petravicius protagonizó una gran canasta pero falló el adicional. El partido se convirtió por un momento en un duelo Ginobili vs Kleiza. El tiempo pasaba, Y Argentina lo tenía muy difícil. Pero es Argentina, nunca puedes despistarte, y Lituania lo sabía. Argentina endoso un parcial de 11-0 y empató el partido. Tras precipitaciones de Ginobili y Jasikevicius, la última posesión era para Lituania. Kleiza recibió un balón en la zona de tres puntos junto a la cabeza de la bombilla y anotó la canasta decisiva a falta de dos segundos. Argentina perdió el balón en el saque de banda y Lituania solo tuvo que anotar un tiro libre para asegurar el encuentro por 79-75

La selección Española de Waterpolo ganó por 16 a 6 a Canadá. Dominó el partido en todo momento. La ventaja representa a la perfección lo sucedido sobre la piscina. El equipo masculino empieza con buen pie su participación olímpica.

España comenzó con mal pie la competición olímpica debido a un partido horrible. Masacradas en la lucha por el rebote, desacertadas del cara al aro, e incapaces de estructurar un correcto juego ofensivo, España pierde muchos puntos a la hora de luchar por el segundo puesto de grupo. Alba Torrents fue la mejor del partido, pero no fue suficiente.

El partido comenzó con China muy fuerte, empujada por 20.000 almas. Ganaban en intensidad y en rebote, sobre todo el ofensivo. España mientras tanto no movía bien el balón y no anotaba los lanzamientos exteriores. Se llegó al minuto 9 con un parcial de 9-0 para las anfitrionas. Tras el tiempo muerto, España despertó en el rebote defensivo y tuvo acierto desde la línea de tres puntos. Así, Amaya Valdemoro empató el partido a 13 con un gran triple. Elisa Aguilar sumaba 8 puntos gracias a su gran capacidad para el contragolpe. El partido llegó al final del primer cuarto con China ganando 18-15.

En el segundo cuarto España volvió a estar desacertada. Sus chicas perdieron 4 balones en menos de 2 minutos. China tenía la hegemonía del rebote. Amaya Valdemoro estaba muy errática. Así, China pronto consiguió una ventaja de 11 puntos. Las precipitaciones en ataque y los despistes defensivos seguían. España se iba al descanso 37-24.

Tras el descanso España ajustó en defensa y realizó dos buenos contraataques que les pusieron a 4 puntos de las chinas. Sin embargo el rebote era una sangría muy grande. Además China corría bien el contraataque y acertaba desde la línea de 3 puntos. Pese a que cuando se acababa el final del cuarto España aumentó la intensidad, el resultado era 52-44. España no había sabido leer el partido en ataque en ningún momento.

China empezaba el último cuarto con otro triple y poniendo el marcador en más 11 para sus intereses. España se mantenía en el partido, esperando una remontada que lo cambiara todo. Alba Torrents era con 17 puntos la mejor del partido. España se ponía a cuatro puntos de las chinas a falta de 4 minutos. España empezó a poner presión sobre el balón, y China salía muy bien de ella. España estuvo a 3 puntos el el último minuto, pero un nuevo rebote ofensivo de China acabó con sus opciones. China comenzó con buen pie ganando a un rival directo. España deberá ganar a Nueva Zelanda para evitar un gran problema. La selección nacional ha perdido muchas opciones de disputar el segundo puesto del grupo y así conseguir un buen cruce de cuartos.

La actual subcampeona del mundo ganó a una Letonia muy sorprendente gracias a un parcial de 21-9 en los últimos 10 minutos de partido. El buen juego colectivo letón puso en serio jaque a una Rusia que era favorita. Su juego interior, dirigido por una gran Jansone, maniató a las dos torres rusas durante gran parte del partido. Finalmente el oficio y la experiencia rusa se impusieron a una Letonia que vio posible la mayor gesta de su historia. El juego en equipo no es suficiente para derrotar a un equipo mejor. Sin Jekabsone al máximo nivel, solo podía perder el partido Rusia, y estuvo muy cerca de hacerlo.

El partido comenzó con Letonia muy errática. Basko anotó el primer lanzamiento de campo de su equipo, los 13 tiros restantes que harían en el primer cuarto fueron errados. La líder, Jekabsone, mejor jugadora de 2007 en Europa según la FIBA, empezó muy errática gracias a la defensa de Korstine. Rusia no estuvo tampoco muy acertada. Stepanova (con 2.03 es la más alta del torneo) y Osipova dominaron el factor desequilibrante: el rebote. Becky Hammon hizo su entrada en el campo para jugar los primeros minutos con Rusia en unos juegos tras abandonar su país natal, Estados Unidos. Al no ser seleccionada por su país, decidió nacionalizarse por el rivál histórico de éste para competir por medalla. Otro caso Holden.¿ Traición o supervivencia?. El cuarto terminó con 14-7 para las rusas.

En el segundo cuarto, la pívot letona, Jansone, cambió el rumbo del encuentro. Anotó 14 puntos y capturó 3 rebotes en los 9 minutos que estuvo en el campo. El balón comenzó a moverse con agilidad, sobre todo por las manos de Basko y Eibele. En defensa plantearon una zona que puso en problemas a Rusia. Solo Kuzina y Hammon tuvieron acierto en unos minutos donde Rusia empezó a fallar tiros muy sencillos. El partido llegó al descanso con 31-29 para Letonia.

En los siguientes 10 minutos nada cambió. El partido siguió igual. Jansone anotó 8 nuevos puntos. Letonia movía muy bien el balón para que sus pívots anotasen. Pese al mal partido de Jekabsone, Rusia estaba maniatada. Solo Hammon y Kuzina mantenían el ritmo anotador. El partido llegaba a sus 10 últimos minutos con 48-41 para Letonia.

Entonces Letonia sintió la presión de ganar a su rival histórico en un evento de esta índole. El balón ya no se movía tan bien, y Jekabsone seguía mal. Rusia empezó a anotar las canastas fáciles cuando de verdad hacía falta. Stepanova y Osipova pararon el juego interior de Letonia. Shchegoleva y Korstin empezaron a anotar. El buen juego letón no tuvo premio. El partido terminó con 62-57, Rusia dejó serias dudas y Letonia demostró que va a dar batalla.

El equipo estadounidense de baloncesto femenino comenzó con buen pie la búsqueda del cuarto oro olímpico consecutivo. Diana Taurasi fue la mejor de un partido que se decidió en el segundo cuarto. Tras el descanso el partido no tuvo ningún tipo de tensión. Todas las jugadoras entraron en juego, y las titulares tuvieron un merecido descanso. La asistencia de George W. Bush y del equipo norteamericano masculino en el pabellón hizo que el espectáculo fuera aún mayor.

El partido comenzó con la República Checa a su mejor nivel, mientras que la selección estadounidense salió muy desacertada. El resultado: parcial de 13-2 para las checas. Sin embargo, esto fue lo único destacable de la actuación de las europeas. Pronto Diana Taurasi puso en sus manos las riendas del partido, y una bandeja suya puso final al primer cuarto, con un parcial de 20-4 para EEU. 22-17.

En el segundo cuarto esta alternancia desapareció. Smith, Lesley y Thompson empezaron a reflejar sobre el marcador la diferencia entre ambas selecciones. La presión americana sobre el balón era muy fuerte, y además las checas no dejaban de perder balones. Así, se estabilizó el marcador en una ventaja de 10 puntos. El final de cuarto sentenció el partido. Cappie Pondexter se encontró muy acertada, y un gran triple suyo sobre la bocina mandó el partido al descanso con EEUU 18 arriba. 49 31.

En el descanso la selección masculina de Estados Unidos hizo su entrada en el pabellón. Recibieron una fuerte acogida de los asistentes y de su presidente.

Si en el vestuario las checas podían haber cambiado de mentalidad, vieron como desaparecía en tan solo dos minutos. Ese fue el tiempo en el que Estados Unidos puso el más 24 en el marcador. Parker empezaba a encontrar su momento en el partido, pese a no estar en uno de sus días. Sylvia Fowles anotó 14 de sus 16 puntos en la segunda parte, a lo que sumó 14 rebotes, tomando el relevo anotador de Taurasi. Cuando el marcador estaba en 75-44, el presidente y su familia abandonaron el pabellón. El resto del partido fue un mero trámite, hasta que el cronómetro llegó a cero con 97-57 en el marcador. Solamente Eva Viteckova se salvó en las checas gracias a sus 12 puntos.

Lesley declaró sentirse muy ilusionada ante la ocasión de ser la primera mujer en conseguir 4 oros olímpicos consecutivos. Es la mujer más veterana de la competición, pero su talento sigue más que vigente. El lunes se disputa el partido más esperado del grupo: China – EEUU. La versión masculina la tendremos mañana.

I giochi sono salvi. Oggi il via all’edizione numero ventinove dei Giochi Olimpici di Pechino 2008: la cerimonia di apertura ufficiale avverrà alle 20.08 di Pechino quando saranno le 14.08 italiane (quindi tra poco), il torneo di calcio è iniziato due giorni fa ed ha visto l’Italia olimpica battere l’Honduras per 3-0 mentre le altre gare inizieranno ufficialmente domani mattina con 24 specialità di cui 7 sono direttamente delle finali. I Giochi finiranno il 24 c.m. con la cerimonia di chiusura alle ore 20.00 locali e le 14.00 italiane. Bene, ho parlato dei “Giochi”, adesso parlo dei “giochi”. Quelli cinesi.

Per queste Olimpiadi cinesi ci sono due correnti di pensiero: una dice che le Olimpiadi, in quanto sport, non deve essere catalogato come un evento anche politico; l’altra invece, proprio perché la Cina sta strumentalizzando il più importante evento sportivo in assoluto, diventa un fatto assolutamente politico, quindi considerato alla mercè della più tetra esperienza culturale e associata alle campagne informative per la mancanza di diritti civili in quel paese.
Tutto vero, sia la prima che la seconda considerazione. Ma cerchiamo di essere pragmatici. I Giochi Olimpici sono l’evento sportivo per eccellenza, da più di cento anni mostrano al mondo – sfidandosi – gli atleti migliori che esistono. E’ un evento assolutamente sportivo e non politico, solo in pochi casi è diventato parte in causa delle opinioni politiche della gente e degli stati: a Mosca 1980 con il boicottaggio dei paesi del blocco occidentale, a Los Angeles 1984 col boicottaggio dei paesi del patto di Varsavia e a Monaco nel 1972, il più grave, dove non c’è stato nessun boicottaggio, ma il terribile attentato agli atleti israeliani. Qui finisce la politica “vera” alle Olimpiadi.
Se questi giochi si fossero svolti trent’anni fa, i mille e più articoli scritti in questi mesi non ci sarebbero nemmeno stati, ovvero le organizzazioni umanitarie sarebbero andate sempre su tutte le furie, ma l’opinione pubblica ne avrebbe saputo infinitamente meno: colpa della globalizzazione. Oggi, ma fin dalla fine del secolo scorso, siamo tutti iperinformati: riceviamo notizie, informazioni, sequenze di cronaca e filmati video praticamente nello stesso momento che accadono, quindi è assolutamente normale che Bejing 2008 sia sotto i riflettori del mondo intero. E volete che le orribili nefandezze del governo cinese non si sappiano? Storie!

Perché la Cina ha voluto queste Olimpiadi? Per gli affari, per i soldi, perché ha un’economia al vertice e avrà la possibilità di far vedere al mondo la grandeur cinese. Tutto, come sempre, ruota intorno ai soldi. La Cina come maggiore potenza economica mondiale i Giochi li ha comprati come potenziale mercato per le multinazionali, tutti ci sono dentro: dalla Coca-Cola a MacDonald, dalla Wolksvagen a Ups, da Lenovo a Kodak, da Microsoft a China mobile e Samsung, Panasonic, Omega, Haier, Visa, General Electric, Johnson & Johnson, Snickers, TechnoGym, Schenker, Budweiser… passando per le più importanti banche mondiali, le immense tv commerciali e per i grossi sponsor istituzionali e tecnici (l’adidas è l’unico sponsor tecnico dei giochi e il maggior fornitore delle squadre). In tutti i settori, i grossi capitali sono in gioco per l’evento che ha rivoluzionato il marketing mondiale. Quindi cosa importa ai governi e agli sponsor se la Cina commette qualche “peccatuccio” veniale come abolire i diritti civili, incarcerare i dissidenti politici, vietare la libera informazione, creare più smog delle nuvole in cielo o mandare i carri armati a fronteggiare una rivolta pacifica. Nulla, esattamente come interessa nulla ai paesi che partecipano alle Olimpiadi. Questo è materialismo, non comprarsi il telefonino da millemila euro per far i fighi: quella è solo stupidità. Prendiamo esempio da loro se vogliamo fare i materialisti, almeno ci guadagniamo qualcosa!

I (pochi) diritti civili nel paese asiatico esistono solo sulla carta: il governo cinese non farà mai qualcosa per dimostrare che anche loro si avvicinano alla democrazia. Possono cambiare i segretari generali del partito (non siamo ai tempi di Mao fortunatamente), possono diventare la massima potenza mondiale, possono essere il paese che produce e lavora di più, ma non saranno mai un paese democratico. Fin quando ci saranno gli ordini di partito a governare la vita umana, nessun cinese potrà dire di essere un “UOMO LIBERO”. La democrazia, quando arriverà, se arriverà, anche in Cina, porterà un disequilibrio anche a livello mondiale e non tutti sono disposti a volerlo. Da qui si capisce perché tutti gli altri stati sono sordi sotto questo aspetto. E’ normale!

L’ultima protesta in ordine di tempo è arrivata tramite un video del “Partito islamico del Turkestan”, un’organizzazione musulmana di etnia aiguri, che vuole l’indipendenza della provincia dello Xinjiang, dove si nota un uomo incappucciato con turbante nero che manda un messaggio nella lingua degli uiguri, e allo stesso tempo scorrono delle immagini col logo dei Giochi in fiamme e un’esplosione presso uno dei siti olimpici di Pechino. Chiaramente non ci dimentichiamo del Tibet, come non ci dimentichiamo di Gedhun Choekyi Nyima quando nel ‘95, a soli sei anni, venne imprigionato dal governo cinese e messo sotto “custodia preventiva” perché secondo il Dalai Lama è l’undicesimo Panchai Lama. Non ci dimentichiamo di Tienanmen, non ci dimentichiamo dei migliaia di blogger arrestati o esiliati perché “sovversivi”, non ci dimentichiamo della rivolta a Llasa dei monaci buddisti bloccata col sangue dei tibetani, non ci dimentichiamo delle tante esecuzioni annue degli anti-comunisti. E non dimentichiamo che in Cina non esiste la democrazia. Questo non dimentichiamolo mai, tutti.

Ma i Giochi olimpici iniziano oggi, non ci resta che vedere i nostri atleti combattere per una medaglia e pensare che in fin dei conti è solo uno sport. Ed è questo che conta: lo sport come aggregazione dei popoli e la speranza che questa si avveri sul serio.
