1988. Belfast Child este o prelucrare după o piesă tradiţională irlandeză She Moved Through The Fair. Cu o durată de 6’39”min., a fost a doua cea mai lungă piesă ajunsă pe locul 1 în Topurile de Single, difuzate la radio în Marea Britanie, după Hey Jude (Beatles).

Pe partea „verso” a vinilului de single (the B-side) s-a înregistrat “Mandela Day,” dedicată lui Nelson Mandela, care împlinea 70 de ani în 11 iunie 1988, persecutat o viaţă întreagă de guvernul rasist din Africa de sud, pentru credinţa şi lupta sa pentru drepturile egale a negrilor în ţara lor.

Belfast Child a fost prima şi singura piesă semnată Simple Minds care ajunge pe locul 1 în Clasamentul Hiturilor din Marea Britanie.

Jim Kerr (solist vocal de origine scoţiană, considerat liderul formaţiei Simple Minds) îşi aduce aminte în cartea “1000 UK #1 Hits”, scrisă de Jon Kutner şi Spencer Leigh:

„Am ascultat melodia She Moved Through The Fair pentru prima dată după ce a explodat bomba teroristă la Enniskillen. Mi-a fost rău după ce am văzut imaginile la televizor. În a doua parte a piesei, încerc să empatizez cu oamenii din Irlanda de nord care şi-au pierdut neamuri sau prieteni în acest atac terorist. Încerc să exprim nebunia, tristeţea, golul rămas, în cuvinte. Nu vreau să se înţeleagă faptul că aş avea de expus perle de înţelepciune, dimpotrivă, am multe întrebări la care nu pot găsi răspunsuri.”

Piesa este dedicată celor decedaţi şi răniţi după atacul terorist de la Enniskillen din 8 noiembrie 1987. IRA (armata republicană catolică a Irlandei „de sud”, care luptă împotriva englezilor protestanţi din Irlanda „de nord” pentru reunificarea naţiunii) a detonat o bombă ascunsă, în toiul ceremoniilor religioase de Ziua Veteranilor din Irlanda (care în 1987 a picat în data de 8 noiembrie), în localitatea Enniskillen (din judeţul Fermanagh, în Irlanda de nord), ucigând 11 şi rănind pe încă 63 de persoane.

Versurile de la începutul preluării Simple Minds sunt:

„When my love said to me Meet me down by the gallow tree For it’s sad news I bring About this old town and all that it’s offering Some say troubles abound Some day soon they’re gonna pull the old town down. One day we’ll return here, when the Belfast Child sings again.”

The other day I was at a bar with a bunch of friends and the song, “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” came on. Everyone was racking their minds, trying to remember the group who did the song. Since I just coincidentally played the song at work (and I love the song) I told everyone that the band was called, Simple Minds.  We all wondered if that song was a “one hit wonder” for the group or if they had any other hit songs. 

So I did my homework today and looked up the band on wikipedia here. According to the a brief skim through of the page, I learned that the group has “achieved five UK number one albums and a number one single Belfast Child.” I also found out that they have a number of hit songs such as, “See The Lights” and “Glitterball.” 

I typed in the band name to YouTube and have been listening to a lot of their songs all day. Until today, and like many of my peers, I had only known of their hit song ["Don't You (Forget About Me)" ] from the great movie, The Breakfast Club. With that being said, I am including my two new favorite songs by Simple Minds. I like how catchy the songs are and I love the typical 1980’s sound the band has captured. I might even venture to say that Simple Minds could be my new favorite band of the moment. (Plus, they’re Scottish, which is pretty cool. I love Scotland!)

“Ierland is de laatste dagen een nieuwsitem omdat ze het Verdrag van Lissabon niet geratificeerd hebben. Wij ook niet, maar wij mochten er dan ook niet over stemmen. Soit, we gaan op zoek naar de beste Ierse song, stuur dus maar uw suggesties”.

Zo orakelde Lieve De Maeyer deze morgen in 70-80-90. Wat later werd Belfast Child van Simple Minds gespeeld. Simple minds indeed, daar bij Stubru. Een nummer van een Schotse band, opgedragen aan een stad in Noord-Ierland. Way to go.

Wij Belgen mochten niet stemmen?? What’s that all about? Heb geduld: ons parlement, dat wij een jaar geleden zelf verkozen hebben, zal ons de moeite besparen dat kolossaal verdrag te lezen en zelf die loodzware taak (hopelijk) opnemen om vervolgens erover te stemmen. Het is nog altijd geen democratie (in de zin dat het parlement van één lidstaat een verdrag kan tegenhouden dat al door een meerderheid van lidstaten is goedgekeurd), maar het is toch democratischer dan een referendum waarin populistische leugens en afbraakpolitiek hoogtij vieren.

Oh, wat klink ik weer zuur. Ik zal erover ophouden. Een pepmiddel dan maar. De beste Ierse song ey?
