There was a lot of talk on Radio yesterday regarding electric cars. The very expensive Tesla electric car was on the island and the company were installing ten free charging points around the island. However, is the electric car the answer??? I see long lines and long waits at these charging stations. Where does the electricity come from to run the vehicles? wind power-coal-nuclear-dams or oil??? Seems to put us back in the same position we are in today. The photo I have posted is of two electric vehicles running in the city of Belfast circa 1920 thru 1950. Both are now long gone and begs the question why?? I realize today the modern electric vehicles are greatly improved but again the question by how much and at what cost??
I’m not convinced electric is the way forward, not sure what is other than mass transit. When I think of the monies spent in the cause of the automobile it is staggering. The road systems, the growth of private vehicles, the taxes on gas, roads, registrations, licenses, tires, repairs, health, insurance, parking spaces and the list goes on and on. Imagine if all that money had been spent on an efficient transit system??? It would be nice if we could look fifty years into the future! At the beginning of the twentieth century the mayor of New York hailed the new automobile as the answer to pollution. He was referring to the mass amounts of horse manure in the streets. We merely solved one problem for another!!!

Answer to yesterdays submarine question.
The Confederate States Submarine Huntley.
She sank the USS Housatonic with a torpedo on the night of 17th Feb 1864. The Hunley sank with all hands during the attack the reason for the loss of the submarine was undetermined. She had a crew of eight.
Not one of my favourite days, or a suitable way to celebrate our history. The annual march of the many Orange Lodges through the streets of Belfast only stirs anger and violence.

Battle of the Boyne
Both kings commanded their armies in person. William had 36,000 men and James had 25,000 – the largest number of troops ever deployed on an Irish battlefield. English, Scottish, Dutch, Danes and Huguenots (French Protestants) made up William’s army (Williamites), while James’ men (Jacobites) were mainly Irish Catholics, reinforced by 6,500 French troops sent by King Louis XIV. At stake were the British throne, French Dominance in Europe and religious power in Ireland.

William won the day, but one wonders what he actually won. Northern Ireland has been plagued with trouble and violence ever since. Protestant against Catholic has been an ongoing issue of hatred that seems to culminate on the 12th July each year. Maybe its time to move on, perhaps celebrate the possibility of a united Ireland, are we not all Irish when all is said and done.

This old children’s rhyme brought back memories of my childhood. We often chased behind the electric bread vans chanting the poem added below. Often the driver to get rid of us would pretend to chase us down the street. We had several different rhymes for the many bread company vans. We didn’t do it for the milkmen, they must have delivered too early in the morning.
“The Belfast Bread Van Poem”
Old McWatter’s bread,, Sticks to your belly like lead…,No a bit o,wonder you fart like thunder…Old McWatter’s bread,………………….Sung by Belfast kids running behind the bread delivery man in the 1930,s thru the early 50,s
My poor old Dad would have been mad at me if he’d ever heard me saying anything against McWatters. He worked there from 1919 when he returned home from the 1st World War until his death in 1960. Wonderful memories of long ago.

On this day in 1931,Ireland had recently gained independence from English rule and military occupation. The people were happy and wanted to do something special that would define their new freedom.
A grand Statue of Christ at the entrance to Dublin City seemed like the answer. That was until they were reminded of the dreadful strife of the city’s poor.

A June 1931 public meeting in Dún Laoghaire they decided to erect a statue of Christ the King to greet passengers arriving at the country’s main entry point,
There was, however, a more serious consideration than the site, the cost or artistry of the proposed statue – a consideration so serious that it demanded a national searching of heart.
The conditions of the slum children of Dublin was insufferable; they were doomed to dreary and stunted lives. For one reason, perhaps, we might have hailed the projected statue. It might have implied a speedy reform of Dublin’s slums. However, surely the newly formed Free State of Ireland would never allow a statue of Christ to be a pointer to such iniquity.
In 1931 nearly eighty thousand such persons were crowded into Dublin’s single-room tenements. Daily and nightly they accompanied such scenes of vice and squalor making decent living and decent thinking virtually impossible. For the men and women of the slums the only refuge from filthy rooms or cellars was the betting-shop and the public-house; and the children must seek their play amid the moral and physical perils of the streets.

I’m please to say , no such Grand Statue greets passengers arriving in Dublin today. While there is still poverty in the city, it is much improved and the dreadful slum conditions of 1931 are gone forever.
Erin go Bragh
A big day in London today and in particular on the Thames River. The celebration of the Queen’s 60th year on the throne, the Diamond Jubilee Year. It brings back memories, I recall we were all ordered to the general assembly at school on the morning of February 6th 1952 for a special announcement. The rumour spreading throughout the school was another World War had started. This was at a time of serious unrest, the blockade of Berlin, the Russian Iron Curtain, and the Korean War. Fortunately, we soon learned the news, it was grim but at least not war, the King was dead and we had a Queen. I recall the Coronation celebrations in June of 1953. I was living in Belfast on Thames Street, we had flags and banners of red white and blue adorning the street. Tables were set up with cakes and juice for the children and games were organized. We were given flags and a coronation medal, it was just plastic but looked like a real medal. I kept it for many years but alas its long gone now. Pity! because it might be worth a few dollars today?? Like the Queen I’m not getting any younger, but on the bright side, she does have 13 years on me!
God Save the Queen.
Everyone seems to be in such a hurry to scream ‘racism’ these days.
A customer asked, “In what aisle could I find the Irish sausage?”
The clerk asks, “Are you Irish?”
The guy, clearly offended, says, “Yes I am.. But let me ask you something.
“If I had asked for Italian sausage, would you ask me if I was Italian?
Or if I had asked for German Bratwurst, would you ask me if I was German?
Or if I asked for a kosher hot dog would you ask me if I was Jewish?
Or if I had asked for a Taco, would you ask if I was Mexican?
Or if I asked for Polish sausage, would you ask if I was Polish?”
The clerk says, “No, I probably wouldn’t.”
The guy says, “Well then, because I asked for Irish sausage, why did you ask me if I’m Irish?”
The clerk replied, “Because you’re in Canadian Tire.
Titanic is only hours away from striking the ice berg. I have a funeral this afternoon and church in the morning then off to see the movie Titanic in 3D, followed by dinner with our friends Carl and Jan. I’ll be interested to see if the Titanic hits the ice berg in 3D, if its more visible in 3D maybe they will miss it this time????
Lots of Titanic talk this week. CTV were in Northern Ireland visiting the Giants Causeway, Carrickfergus Castle, and today they are at the Titanic Centre. Makes me proud to see so much positive news about Northern Ireland, we’ve had terrible media coverage in the past during the times of troubles. Perhaps the celebration of Titanic will help us to heal too. Its time for us to be Irish, not British, not Northern Irish, just plain and proud Irish. This must be a huge boost for Irish Tourism, and has really put us back in the public eye. Today the 13th April was the last day the passengers would spend a night in their beds. The fate awaiting the great ship was only one day ahead. Its so easy for us to second guess the ships officers now. Yet also difficult to understand their lack of caution. They knew the ship was in waters where icebergs drifted, they had received several ice warnings from other ships. Why then didn’t they take extra care. Even if the ship didn’t slow down, they could have posted more lookouts, perhaps one at the most forward point of the bow. Perhaps an extra minute of warning might have made the difference???? Too late now of course.
Very Sad.
One Hundred years ago today.
10th April 1912 : Titanic sets sail on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, the Titanic has been described as the worlds most luxurious floating hotel. She was only 4 days out when she hit an Iceberg and Sank in the Atlantic with the loss of many lives. What an event the sailing must have been, the Worlds largest man made moving object. No one could have envisioned what lay ahead on the 14th April. I can be said the Titanic was indeed sinkable, but the story of the Titanic disaster appears to be unsinkable????
On the 2nd April 1912 the Titanic sailed at 1800hrs (6pm)for sea trials which were successfully completed. Then at 2000hrs she headed into the Irish Sea en-route to Southhampton, where she would arrive the following day. The worse maritime disaster in our history was now only days away.
Over the next week or so there will be numerous articles, events and TV shows about the Titanic. It is amazing how this ship has captured the hearts and minds of so many for so long. Its rather odd to think the Titanic sister ship the RMS Olympic successfu plied the North Atlantic ferrying thousands of passengers back and forth across the Atlantic without incident or death. The Olympic sailed from 1912 until 1935, and was later scrapped. Yet she is an almost forgotten ship in our Maritime history.
Is it just me that sees this???Another Titanic made for TV four part series, began last night on Global TV, Maritimes. Guess what?? the Ice Berg is sighted and the Officer of the Watch gives the order, Hard-A-Starboard. In this version you don’t actually see the ship turning to Port. However, as the hull plates on the starboard side sustain the critical damage the ship had to be turning left away from the berg. I can’t believe the directors continue to make this obvious mistake, or is it me????
Am I missing something here. Twenty four years in the Navy and turning to starboard was turning right. If the Titanic actually turned right (starboard) she would have been turning into the berg not trying to avoid it???
Grrrrr!!!! get it right.
Cheers and keep reading.

It is strange to think that one hundred years ago this month, the great ship was only weeks away from disaster. By the end of March 1912 the ship would have probably completed trials and passed the Board of Trade inspection. I can only imagine the excitement that bubbled around the Belfast shipyards as the ship left for her maiden voyage. My grandfather,James Alexander Arlow, helped to build this amazing vessel. He was a furnace-man, and heated the rivets that went into the hull plates. The same rivets that we now suspect were the wrong grade of iron and ultimately failed when the ship struck the berg. It is amazing the Titanic still commands such great interest. At least four movies have been produced over the years, and several books published. Museums display artifacts and replicas of the ship. Just recently here on PEI a restaurant featured a Titanic night, serving the same meal as was served on that last fateful night . The staff and waiters dressed in traditional shipboard clothing. In the City of Belfast a huge complex known as the Titanic Quarter is nearing completion. It is building on the actual site where Titanic was originally built.
A sad yet fond and special memory from the grand old City of Belfast

As promised here is my story, its a bit long for a short story, but its Irish and an Irish mile is about three miles long!!! Enjoy my tale and please feel free to tell me if you believe it happened.

The Blarney Stone – Myth or Legend?

The Blarney stone has woven around itself a unique tradition of myth, legend and
Romance. It is said that the secret of the holy stone was given to Cormac MacCarthy, King of Munster by the local witch whom he saved from drowning in the lake behind the castle. It is also said that the stone was brought back from the Crusades and that it was made into two halves. One is the Stone of Scone also known as the Stone of Destiny, the other half was given to Cormac MacCarthy by Robert Bruce of Scotland in gratitude for the Irish army of four thousand men which was sent to help him at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Whatever its origins, through the centuries the stone has succeeded in strengthening the mystical romance and legend that reaches to the four corners of the world as is evident by the thousands of people who visit Blarney Castle every year just to kiss this mysterious stone in hope of receiving the gift of eloquence or perhaps to capture a little of the mystique that is the Blarney Stone

—————————————————

Many readers will dismiss this story as mere coincidence, but those of you with a touch of Irish may well believe it, as do I.
————————————————————————————————
In order to tell my story I must first relate an event that occurred one year earlier. My name is Frederick Rodgers I’m a twenty year old Able Seaman and as yet unmarried. I have served happily for three years in the Silent Service. During the summer of 1962 in Plymouth, England I was serving aboard the Royal Navy submarine HM/SM Taciturn. On weekend leave I suffered a severe head injury as a front seat passenger in a shipmate’s car. Three weeks in hospital and thirty stitches later I was sent home on sick leave. Whilst on leave my brother-in-law suggested I claim damages and took me to a solicitor. I recounted what little I remembered about the accident and gave the lawyer a newspaper clipping, the only real information I had
When sick leave expired I was posted to HMS Dolphin, the submarine base in Portsmouth, I remained there until declared fit for sea duty almost one year later.

A Touch of Blarney
****************
In May 1963 I was declared fit to return to sea duty. I reported to the drafting office for my next assignment. I had long since forgotten the solicitor or any hope of receiving compensation.
The submarine base maintains a complete spare crew. If a submarine found itself short a crew member due to health or such, a replacement was readily available. It was to spare crew I now find myself posted. I’m given several forms to complete and deliver to appropriate departments. It was important the pay office knew my whereabouts if I expected to be paid. It was equally important the post office had my new address if I hoped to receive mail. However, the first priority was to transfer with my kit to the spare crew accommodation. By the time I moved to my new billet it was already late. I decided the forms could wait until the following morning. That night I turned in and quickly fell asleep.

Suddenly a blinding light is shinning in my face. Behind it, someone was shouting “ you Rodgers?” You’ve got ten minutes to get your ass aboard the submarine Totem, she’s about to sail.

I landed aboard as they were about to remove the gangway. I was unshaven, unwashed and now underway. The boat was heading out to operate in the Irish Sea with a visit to the City of Cork on the weekend. Thursday at sea being payday everyone was paid. Everyone except me that is! I was almost broke with maybe five shillings to my name. The chance of borrowing from a shipmate was nil. Not a permanent member of the crew, loaning me money was high risk. I could disappear as quickly as I had arrived.

Saturday morning, alongside in Cork City I was free to go ashore. Opposite the gangway was a pub. It didn’t open until noon. However, a discrete tap on a side door my shipmates and I are quickly ushered inside.
The interior was dim blinds still down. We ordered pints of Guinness and headed to a table by the fireside. As our eyes became accustomed to the gloom we saw a Garda (Irish Policeman) standing at the bar.
“Tis British sailors breaking the law I’m seeing here?” he says. We froze on the spot. After a pause he continued. “Ah well! Sure tis breaking the law to let salty young seafarers like yourselves go thirsty.”

A few pints later and my funds reduced by half I returned anboard for lunch. Levity in a seaman’s mess usually increases after the daily noontime issue of rum. This was the case aboard Totem. Someone suggested we head out of town to Blarney Castle to kiss the famous stone.
Having imbibed a tot and two pints of Guinness, kissing the Blarney Stone seemed an admirable idea.

The bus fare depleted a further sixpence from my dwindling funds. Arriving at the castle we were directed to climb a circular stairway to the top of the tower. Here we found the Blarney Stone and an enterprising photographer. For one shilling he would take our photograph kissing the stone. We readily agreed we surely needed a record of our lips touching this famous stone. After paying the photographer I couldn’t afford return bus fare and had to walk the five miles back to town. I returned aboard Totem, depressed, my feet aching and my pockets empty.

A dance was hosted for Totem’s crew that night promising lots of girls in attendance. I knew I wouldn’t be doing any dancing even if my feet recovered in time.

When I entered the mess I noticed the mail had arrived. I showed no interest there would be none for me. Like my pay doc’s, my change of address was sitting in my locker back at the base. Therefore I was stunned when a shipmate asked if I’d got my letter? What letter? It had to be a mistake. It couldn‘t be for me.

Nevertheless, on the table was a large official looking white envelope with my name clearly printed on the front? I quickly tore it open to find it contained several typed pages. But what immediately caught my attention was the attached cheque. It was from my lawyer, a settlement for my injuries in the sum of one thousand pounds. Never in my life had I held such a huge sum of money in my hands.

The first question that came to mind was how this letter found me? How was it possible? The fleet mail office didn’t have my new address.
*******
Now my second question?
A few hours earlier I had kissed the Blarney Stone with only small change in my pocket. Now I was rich beyond my wildest dreams. Coincidence??? Or Luck of the Irish?? You decide!

I served a total of 25 years in the British and Canadian Navies. I’m now retired and living with my wife, Linda, in Ebenezer, Prince Edward Island. Canada. I have completed and published two books (both memoirs) titled “Lily & Me” and “The Royal Navy & Me” they are available in bookstores or online at http://www.amazon.com or visit my.
Web page for more info http://www.irishroversbooks.com
*******
Oh, and yes I did make it to the dance that night!

Tomorrow is Saint Patrick’s Day, and as I promised I will post a true story of kissing the Blarney Stone. Now! I will understand it you are a wee bit suspicious. I realize that I have been posting tales of Irish folk lore and myth during the past week. However, the story I post tomorrow is the truth, it did happen. I leave it to you to decide if its because of kissing the Blarney Stone or merely a coincidence. “Erin go Bragh”.
There are always two opposites expressed about Saint Patrick’s Day. One, its a great way to celebrate our Irish heritage. But sadly the other is to portray the Irish as a bunch of drunks. I really get angry with this attitude that its an opportunity to spend the whole day drinking beer,(green at that). Its stereotyping and offensive, the Irish don’t suggest Canadians are all drunks on Canada Day? Or Americans are drunks on the 4th July. How many people with a real Irish Heritage do you think you’ll find in the pubs on the 17th. Many more non-Irish would be my bet. As a nation Ireland has struggled more than most, yet have spread there knowledge and charm in books, music and theatre throughout the world. The Irish didn’t keep slaves, but they were slaves,They never came as conquerors but they know what its like to be conquered. They have never imposed their beliefs on others yet have added greatly in the civilized world. Something you might think about when next you claim you are not a racist.
Erin go Bragh, (Ireland Forever) Lets celebrate all things Irish and continue to avoid the latest Harper/Del Mastro nonsense. The invitation card in this post was a highlight of my life. To be invited to lunch with the President of Ireland was something I never imagined possible. It was one of the proudest moments of my life. Mary McAleese, like me ,was born in the grimy back streets of Belfast. Admittedly she has achieved considerably more, but our common link is we are both Irish and both from Belfast. I have the added honour of having my book “Lily & Me” residing in the library at “Aras an Uachtarain” the presidential residence in Phoenix Park, Dublin. I don’t suppose it is on the shelves between priceless leather bound books by authors like Yeats,Shaw or Joyce. Nevertheless its in the area and that is my claim to fame!!!. The word boycott entered the English language during the Irish “Land War” and is derived from the name of Captain Charles Boycott, the land agent of an absentee landlord, Lord Erne, who lived in Lough Mask House, in County Mayo, Ireland, who was subject to social ostracism organized by the Irish Land League in 1880. As harvests had been poor that year, Lord Erne offered his tenants a ten percent reduction in their rents. In September of that year, protesting tenants demanded a twenty five percent reduction, which Lord Erne refused. Boycott then attempted to evict eleven tenants from the land. Charles Stewart Parnell, in a speech in Ennis prior to the events in Lough Mask, proposed that when dealing with tenants who take farms where another tenant was evicted, rather than resorting to violence, everyone in the locality should shun them. While Parnell’s speech did not refer to land agents or landlords, the tactic was first applied to Boycott when the alarm was raised about the evictions. Despite the short-term economic hardship to those undertaking this action, Boycott soon found himself isolated — his workers stopped work in the fields and stables, as well as in his house. Local businessmen stopped trading with him, and the local postman refused to deliver mail.

The concerted action taken against him meant that Boycott was unable to hire anyone to harvest the crops in his charge. Eventually 50 Orangemen from Cavan and Monaghan volunteered to do the work. They were escorted to and from Claremorris by one thousand policemen and soldiers, despite the fact that the local Land League leaders had said that there would be no violence from them, and in fact no violence materialized. This protection ended up costing far more than the harvest was worth.

The photo is a caricature of Capt Boycott

Another proud Irish victory, Another first for Ireland.
He later went on to form the Dunlop Tyre Company. He was born in Scotland but moved to Ireland as a veterinary doctor. He first practiced in Downpatrick then moved into Belfast. There is a plaque to his memory on Joy Street near the Titanic Quarter. Titanic, something else we Irish are proud of. But it sank, you say, Right, but it was fine when it left here.
Just recently a very kind fellow from Belfast, after seeing my blog photo of the tram and the van, sent me a photo of the McWatters Bakery on Cromac St, its an old photo taken in 1940. Nevertheless I’m delighted to have it, my father worked at the bakery from 1919 until his death in 1960.
