So I was asked to make a list of the things I want for the holidays. I was told to make sure it was not ridiculous. I considered it a challenge to be completely obscure. (Followed by things your girlfriend/wife/daughter/sister might actually want this holiday season.)

My first answer to this was a football helmet full of cottage cheese. If you saw the popular 90′s movie Airheads, you would get this obscure reference. If you haven’t seen it… you should.

A day off. Oh wait… You don’t get those when you have a business. Grrrrr…

New boobs (thanks Dr. Russo) = Need new bras.

Office Space. Actual office space. In the Quincy area. Not the movie Office Space. Although also a great movie with a TON of awesome obscure references. Have you seen my stapler?

New Louboutins. Because I love obnoxious shoes.

A new car. Preferably of the Mercedes variety.

Gay Personal Assistant/Gay Best Friend (GPA/GBA) on payroll. Not only to help me with my business… but sometimes I don’t know which shoes to wear. Also, sometimes he should not wear pants. Because, lets face it, Gay men always have better underwear than straight men.

A dog. Which my assistant will also be taking care of. He told me he will not take care of a pig named “Kosher” or a piranha named “Nemo.” Which I accept, because I’m not sure of the legal status of these animals in the State of Massachusetts.

My significant other to finish law school. Because I have obscure legal questions like “what is the status of having a pig or a piranha for a pet?” and “is ‘I thought speed limits were suggestions’ a viable defense?”

A $10,000 gift card to Starbucks. My CPA, Matt Traiger, told me I have a problem. And I’d like a gift card for gas. I’ll take that in the amount of $25,000. Or I’ll accept stock in Exxon/Mobile.

The Helicopter button in my new Benz. You know, the one you press so your car can fly over 93 when it’s gridlocked. Oh right. That’s EVERYDAY.

An alarm clock that is also capable of removing me from my bed. And putting me in the shower. And cooking. And cleaning. Oh wait… maybe my GPA can do that. Or at least hire people to do that stuff.

I don’t think this stuff is TOO much to ask for.

Ok, but for REAL:

Jewelry- but beware– jewelry is a very personalized gift. Diamonds and pearls are always classy… but is she a diamond girl? bling bling? or more subtle? like classy pearls? Does she usually wear gold? or silver? I once broke up with a guy who bought me aquamarines for an anniversary gift (not because I’m shallow, but because after dating someone for a year, you should know what kind of jewelry that person wears. I realized it was a dead end relationship.)

My friend Megan swears by “asking Steph at Nordstrom’s in Natick;” all you need is a size and she can style you up (remember to check the tag of your girls clothes… and also keep in mind every brand is different, confusing and annoying–yea we know!). If you can’t make it to Natick, that’s ok. A lot of the high end stores have staff that are MORE than helpful.

Your intrepid shopper finally visited this little gem on East Main Street (on the park) in downtown Woodstock. It’s one in a chain of stores, all others in the Upper Midwest, that features “designer inspired” handbags, jewelry, accessories and clothes. Prices are very, very reasonable. Originally open just the first week of each month, the Woodstock store is now open every week from Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The primary focus is on handbags, and you will find a wide variety of styles and fun colors for summer, from the biggest tote to the most compact clutch.

Jewelry includes many necklace and earring combinations, watches, rings, and charms that will fit your Pandora bracelet at half the cost. I also found beautiful lightweight summer scarves and fun flip-flops. There is a small section for kids, too.

When you go, be sure to check out the sale section for some really great deals. The inventory constantly turns over, so if you don’t see something you like, check back in a few weeks. Or if you do, grab it before it’s gone.

Other nice features are the frequent shopper punchcard, which gets you a free handbag after filling it up, and the customer referral discount card, which gets you and the person you refer a 10% discount on a handbag.

For more information, visit their website or call 770-516-6002.

The Alaska Journal of Commerce posted a story by Gina Romero about the Tasty Tweets event I have blo

The Alaska Journal of Commerce posted a story by Gina Romero about the Tasty Tweets event I have blogged and literally spammed Facebook and Twitter about. Though I have never met Ryan Stanley in person, I do consider him a friendly acquaintance if not at least a friend. As I read his, and other updates on the morning of June 1st this year, I could not believe when he was “tweeting” about his house burning down. At first, I even thought it was some sort of metaphor for something else going on. As we found out later and saw the pictures, the family tragedy became all too real. Here’s an excerpt from the article:

If you are on Twitter and follow other Alaskans, you may have noticed a series of tweets about a bake sale and Tweetup, called Tasty Tweets, set for Aug. 29 at Bella Boutique in Anchorage.

Valette McLay of Anchorage is an avid Twitter user. She helped spearhead Tasty Tweets, a bake sale and Tweetup for fire victim Ryan Stanley of Juneau. Photo/Gina Romero/For the Journal

It is the latest in a series of Tweetups – using Twitter to organize real-live meet-ups – that have been held in Anchorage since January, said John Proffitt, who is creator of AlaskaTweets.com, a Web site to inform those interested in local social media events.

Proffitt, who is known among Alaska’s Twitter users, has organized a majority of the local Tweetups.

“I feel a kinship with many of the people I meet online, especially those I choose to follow on Twitter, and organizing these events lets me pay back that community for the affinity I have for the group,” he said.

Ryan Stanley said he also feels a kinship with people in Alaska’s online community. Stanley, who lives in Juneau, said he uses Twitter specifically to connect with Alaskans. Although he has not been able to attend the Anchorage Tweetups, Stanley said he stays involved with the group by looking at photos and by reading posts about the events.

“For the largest state in the union, it is the smallest state in the union. It’s, I guess, a kind of unique thing you get to have a community that is spread out over such a large distance,” he said.

Stanley is a social media super user. Twitter, Facebook and FriendFeed are a few of many ways he stays connected. He uses Twitter to network with Alaskans, Facebook for national and international contacts, and FriendFeed to interact with his professional circle.

His social networks are linked, so that one post goes to a variety of people. On the morning of June 1, 2009, a series of posts went out that touched many of Stanley’s followers.

“OMG. I’m standing here watching my house burn. Unbelievable.”

“Stunned.”

“Holy Crap.”

“RIP Pink House.”

Stanley posted these in the early morning hours as he watched fire destroy his home and everything inside. The fire, determined as intentionally set, originated in the laundry room of his neighbor’s apartment-style dwelling on Basin Road, Fire Marshal Dan Jager said. Since then, Stanley, his wife, Laura Hosey, and 3-year-old daughter, Meadow, have been trying to rebuild their lives.

As I keep asking, please help in anyway you can.

….and they were called Bella Boutique (next to the Curiousity Shoppe on 4th Street between South and Lombard), Retrospect (534 South Street) and Greene Street Consignment (700 South Street). Which one is the best? I suppose it depends on what you’re looking for.

Greene Street has a nice selection of women’s clothes…I have found some great shorts, t-shirts and other cute tops there. Prices are generally quite reasonable. Visit their website, www.greenstreetconsignment.com for infomation on selling clothes to Greene Street and what they accept.

Retrospect has been criticised for being way overpriced and having a staff with some major ‘tude problems. That said this store sells a wide array of stuff…men’s and women’s clothing, vintage furniture, jewelry, houseware, fabric, records and other assorted odds and ends. Snoop around for something one-of-a-kind. www.retrospectvintage.com

Bella Boutique…ahh Bella. Great store with an amazing selection of vintage handbags and cute clothes. I have found some really great dresses here, such as a gorgeous sundress from Express for $15 and a cute Gap bag for $10. There are usually $1-$3 bins of stuff (clothes, shoes, belts, etc) in front of the store and you never know what cool stuff you might dig up! Find more information about Bella on www.yelp.com.
