Last week we began an ambitious expedition through the best music of the past decade and I posted the albums ranked 91-100. Today we will tackle the next ten, numbers 81-90. Let me know what you think.

90. U2 – No Line on the Horizon (2009)
I’ve long been a fan of U2, but have rarely found their complete albums to be great. Even their magnum opus, The Joshua Tree, is terribly front-loaded. No Line continues their tradition of good recordings, proving to be one of their better collections overall and definitely their best since 1991’s The Joshua Tree. Some of the songs, like “Magnificent” and “Moment of Surrender,” can stand up to anything in their legendary catalog.

89. Matisyahu – Youth (2006)
An orthodox Hasidic Jew doing reggae music? Why not, this is the 2000’s. Matisyahu mixes socially conscious lyrics with danceable rhythms to produce one of the more unusual and surprising releases of the decade. The title track, “Youth,” and “King Without a Crown” are two tunes that particularly show that he could be in for a long and fruitful career.

88. Pearl Jam – Riot Act (2002)
As I’ve mentioned on many occasions in the past, I’ve long been a rabid fan of Pearl Jam and this is probably my favorite of theirs from the intervening years between No Code and Backspacer. It has a varied sound that is more akin to Vitalogy than to any of their other works, while showing the maturity of a group of men closing in on 40. The album contains jabs at corporate America and President Bush, but I think my favorite tunes are probably “I am Mine,” “Thumbing my Way,” and “Love Boat Captain.” It’s definitely a must-have for PJ fans.

87. The New Pornographers – Challengers (2007)
TNG is an indie rock supergroup of sorts made up of AC Newman, Dan Bejar (aka Destoryer), and one of my personal favorites, Neko Case. The band makes interesting music together, but I personally wish they would utilize Case more often than they do. Regardless, this album has some great songs, including “Myriad Harbor” and the title track, “Challengers.”

86. Belle & Sebastian – The Life Pursuit (2006)
Scottish band Belle & Sebastian have been carrying the indie pop banner for several years now and The Life Pursuit continues their streak of interesting and catchy music. Their sound is similar to the alternative bands of the 1980’s, such as The Smiths, just with a bit more sunshine from earlier mainstream pop. Check out songs like “The Blues Are Still Blue” and “Funny Little Frog” to get a better idea of what they are about.

85. Gnarls Barkley – St. Elsewhere (2006)
The combination of producer extraordinaire Danger Mouse and rapper Cee-Lo Green quickly proved itself to be a formidable one with their debut release, St. Elsewhere. Funky and soulful, with inescapably catchy songs like “Crazy,” the duo blew up in 2006 with this multi-platinum released and have continued to prove themselves with an innovative style that appeals to both critics and regular listeners.

84. Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest (2009)
Interesting and intelligent, the band Grizzly Bear is a critical darling of the decade for a reason. The have a real knack for bending genres, mixing electronic sounds with vocal harmonies a la Fleet Foxes and some very nice alterna-pop melodies. Catchy songs like “Two Weeks” and “While You Wait for the Others” will be stuck in your head for days. Though I had heard some of their last release, Yellow House, this was the first album of the band’s that I’ve listened to very often, so I’m looking forward to seeing what Grizzly Bear has in store for us in the future.

83. Radiohead – Hail to the Thief (2003)
Would it be considered a heresy for me to call Radiohead the Beatles of generation X? There is probably no other group who have changed music, who have camped out at the cutting edge and set themselves up as the standard-bearers of a generation, to the same extent as Thom Yorke’s band. While this politically charged album may not be among their best, it is still quite good and proves that even when not on top of their game, Radiohead is on another level than everyone else. Songs like “2+2=5” and “There There” are nearly on par with anything in their career.

82. Modest Mouse – Good News for People Who Love Bad News (2004)
I had listened to some Modest Mouse prior to the release of this album, but for whatever reason, they never truly grabbed hold of me. It was not until the catchy and anthemic song “Float On” hit the airwaves that I went back, listened, and became a fan. This breakout album for the longtime indie stalwarts is definitely a must-own for someone interested in the music of the early 2000’s.

81. Okkervil River – The Stand Ins (2008)
This hyper-literate Austin band hit paydirt with this 2008 release and its ultra-catchy “Lost Coastlines.” Though this set of recordings is supposed to be a companion piece to their 2007 release, The Stage Names, I think I actually enjoy it more. Frontman Will Sheff likes to make strange and sometimes obscure references to everything from French playwright Antonin Artaud to a 1920’s German silent film to the Gospel of Thomas, and that’s only in one song (“Singer Songwriter”). How cool is that? Seriously, check this album out if you haven’t already.

that belle and sebastian could have solidified, codified even, most of my post-pubescence. of course, should i know what i am going to do next, in adulthood, that would be even better. i still love them, though, and i cannot possibly hold anything against them: they were there when i would yawn and awake, listening to the softness outside, some warble in a tree that i could not locate, floating into mental nothingness as the day came to weigh on me before i had set my feet down on the ground. this was before i could call myself a flosser.

now that i am regimented, and i do not make time for these cute bands, i have a life. my oral hygiene is better than it has ever been, and i have a near aversion to sweets. how about that?

despite my tough exterior, i am still susceptible to drunkenness and poor decisions.

We were at the BAFTA Scotland awards last night. It was a fabulously glittery evening and a great party. The bad news for us was that The Lost Book didn’t win the Interactive category – but the good news is that the award went to the lovely Cybraphon. Here we are with Cybraphon’s human representatives (who explained that Cybraphon couldn’t make it there due to a lack of casters!) and their BAFTA:

Other good news: Mick Cooke (our soundtrack competition guest judge) and Gili Dolev picked up the Animated Short award for the brilliant The Happy Duckling.
Ok, Paste. You got 50 slots to fill with what you thought were the best albums from 2000-2009. I wrote a top 10 list, so there were some great albums that just barely missed the cut–and they didn’t make your list, either, Paste. I mean, with 40 more slots to fill than I had, you could have at least included the following.

21. Gorillaz — Gorillaz (2001)

20. The Dresden Dolls — Yes, Virginia (2006)

19. Belle and Sebastian — The Life Pursuit (2006)

18. The Black Keys — Attack and Release (2008)

17. Stereolab — Chemical Chords (2008)

16. Muse — Absolution (2003, U.K./2004, U.S.)

15. The Raveonettes — Lust Lust Lust (2007, U.K./2008, U.S.)

14. Rufus Wainwright — Want One (2003) [made the Paste list]

13. The White Stripes — Get Behind Me Satan (2005)

12. Regina Spektor — Begin to Hope (2006)

Recently I had a conversation with a friend about the significance of the first song played on our s

Recently I had a conversation with a friend about the significance of the first song played on our stereos each day. For us, as for many others, that first, self-selected track is just as essential a part of our morning routine as tea or coffee, a hot shower and a bite to eat. Properly chosen, the first tune of the day helps set the mood for the day ahead. On those truly bad days it can even help provide a lifeline to follow back home. This is why music radio is never the first thing I switch on in the morning and why, in the days when I had a clock radio for an alarm it was always tuned to talk radio. How could I dream of letting someone else start my musical day for me?

For reasons I’m not entirely sure I comprehend Sundays are especially significant for me. I’ll often start thinking about what to play first as I drift off to sleep on a Saturday night. It’s not uncommon for me to wait an hour before playing any music on a Sunday simply because I want to feel sure I’ve made the right choice to break my aural fast with. A good number of my Sunday morning songs have a brightness and clarity about them even if some of their lyrics, rhythms and tempos aren’t of the sunniest disposition.

There is, I believe, one major, identifiable reason that my first musical selection on a Sunday morning is so important to me. The first musical sounds to come out of my stereo on a Sunday morning don’t just constitute the first song of the day, they also amount to the first song of the week. Ideally on a Sunday morning, I’ve had a chance to let my hair down on Friday and Saturday nights, I’m feeling recharged, I don’t have too much work to do and I have a suspicion that there are at least a few things right or beautiful in the world. That first song therefore represents the vessel I’m leaving port in and it’s up to me to make sure it’s carefully chosen and up to the task of sailing through the week ahead as unscathed as possible. The songs I play on Monday through Saturday mornings represent the minor ports I call at for repairs and fresh supplies during my journey.

Sometimes I even wonder if there’s some sort of genetic impulse to revere my Sunday mornings at work within me, some sort of familial memory compelling me to create and observe the quasi ritual of selecting and playing that first song. Could it be that the generations of my protestant ancestors who dutifully observed their Sabbath somehow contributed to my own observances on a Sunday morning? Is my obsession actually just an expression of some social pattern passed down through my family that’s just happened find an outlet in my listening habits? Somehow I doubt it, although that doesn’t stop me from entertaining the possibility.

Because I exercise so much care in choosing the first song I hear on a Sunday morning I’ve also come to recognise that those choices constitute a good portion of what I see as the best, most enduring music in my collection. If you asked me to choose the best songs I have, I’d be flummoxed. I wouldn’t be able to decide on a final answer. The tunes I put on first on a Sunday, however, provide me with a readily identifiable body of the music that is most important to me and that has an enduring power to set my imagination running and emotions tumbling. I might play a relatively recent addition to my collection first thing on any other day of the week without much thought. That very, very rarely happens on a Sunday.

The last song to achieve a quick elevation into my Sunday morning club was “The State I Am In” off the Belle and Sebastian album Tigermilk. This surprised me because although I knew I liked the album and was grateful to my wife and brother-in-law for sharing it with me I didn’t realise how beautiful this song is. Instead I found myself putting it on one Sunday morning with little hesitation. It was only when it had ended that I realised I had rarely, if ever, started playing a song first thing on a Sunday morning after such a brief acquaintance. Over the past 4 or 5 years I’ve probably played “The State I Am In” more times on a Sunday morning than any other track in my collection.

I’m sure that over some period a different song will supplant the Belle and Sebastian tune as my most played piece of Sunday morning music, but that doesn’t mean I will value it less or that it will lose its power to make me feel, to remind me that I’m alive and human while setting me up for the week ahead. All of my Sunday morning songs are important to me personally, and, though I can’t really be the judge of this, brilliant pieces of music. For example, I’ll often play Ryan Adams’s “Gonna Make You Love Me” one of three songs played as part of my wedding ceremony and taken from his second solo album Gold.

The list of songs worthy of being the first musical thing I hear on a Sunday morning is fairly extensive and also rather diverse in terms of style, genre, theme, tempo, rhythm and just about any other criterion you might use to classify music. At the same time it represents a very small fraction of the music I own, an essential kernel of the best, most powerful and most beautiful tracks in my collection. As such my selection of Sunday morning songs does more than just put me in a good mood for the day and week ahead. It also provides me with a vital mental and emotional sustenance.

If anyone out there feels like sharing the first song they listened to today or on any other significant morning I’d be interested to read about it. With any luck I’ll get some good ideas for tracks I need to add to my own collection.

“I’ve got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell!”

Probably one of the greatest SNL skits of all time… if you’re unfamiliar with the phrase “more cowbell”, enlighten yourself here, you Philistine. The skit immortalized the song featured within — (Don’t Fear) The Reaper by Blue Öyster Cult — and since then it’s become somewhat of a cult classic for its comedic value and for being so inexplicably catchy. As a result, the song has been covered by scores of artists in a number of different styles, including Van She, s.e.k.s., and Elliott Smith. Even Belle and Sebastian has covered the song, but sadly I couldn’t find an .mp3 online, merely torrents that would take too long to download. Anyhow, enjoy the great diversity of interpretations of this classic hit! (Could still use more cowbell…)

Another weekend of football high and lows, another Trojan win and, unfortunately, back to another Raiders loss. So here I am, back on the grind, with my first little bit of downtime since I got here at 5. I figure it’s as good a time as any to quickly hit you off with a hot tune for your listening pleasure. I’ve selected a song today from the Forgetting Sarah Marshall soundtrack (I LOVE that movie, and what a great collection of songs too). Today’s jam: Belle and Sebastian – Get Me Away. Enjoy….

God Help the Girl.

I’m detoxing. What can be more Californian? I’m following a regimen based on a book written by my transcendental Meditation teacher (Oh I just found something more californian than detoxing- TM) The book is called ‘Cleane’. It’s very good.

I have detoxed before but in an Ashram, where I was protected from the world. This detox is far more challenging because I am attempting to live a normal life while only eating a solid meal at lunch and juice or veg smoothies. The lack of caffeine and the sugar lows have quite an effect- a bit like angry jet lag. I can’t quite focus (either eyes or mind) and I go through bouts of grumpiness. The other day at work I accidently deleted something I’d been working on and had a tantrum. My colleagues were extremely understanding (they are Californian, they are not strangers to the idea of a good cleanse) and they led me to the kitchen for a mango and humus smoothie.

That night T and I went to a Snow Patrol concert in the Wiltern. I’m not a mega fan, to be honest, but I had known the original band, for a short while, when they were still based in Dundee, Scotland. The guys played at my pals Chris and George’s wedding and they were fab (so were Chris and George). So seein ‘em here seemed like the fun thing to do. Being on a detox certainly helped the experience. Getting to the concert was the first challenge. The concert was at the Wiltern, which is a fantastic art Deco theatre on Wishire Blvd. It’s only a ten minute drive away but I was so carb-deprived it took me and Tara twenty minutes. Car lights were sweeping past me with neon trailers, at one point I think we went through a snow blizzard. At the gig we didn’t have any booze, a first for me. And then as we watched the very good Plain White Tees we felt kind of sleepy- mellow even. As it happens this detoxed semi drugged state was the perfect way to watch Snow Patrol. Since their Indie-jeepster days they have developed a kind of Alternative Rock, Pop Fusion! Gary Lightbody the lead singer, and most of his band, seemed particularily sexed up and the girls, and quite a few boys, loved it. The result is kind of Boyzone-Prog rock. No wonder they’ve supported U2 and the likes. The set ran nicely one song into another like a stoned night in student halls. (Also, Richard Colburn from the excellent Belle and Sebastian was on precussion.) They played their new single ‘ Just Say Yes’, which is slightly rockier than most of their songs. But the gig was a lot of fun and the LA crowd was excellent. We left the gig with our pals feeling we were going to survive the detox. I’m still not a big fan, I still think the sound is too squidy and the themes too samey for me, but rock on to them. Seven million album sales be praised.

We now decided to walk to the nearest pub to watch our pals have a beer. Walking to the nearest pub, this being LA, took twenty minutes and it turned out to be a snug and freindly Korean Social club. T and I stared at the others as they enjoyed a pint of Hite beer and sipped a spicy chick pea soup. Damn it, the things you sacrifice on this detox. Anyway LA has a large Korean community and we stumbled on one of it’s many gems. We’ll be back once we can eat solids again. And I would give you the name of the joint but I can’t, I don’t read Korean very well…

Fall means many things for many people. For me, it’s been this Belle and Sebastian song, “Another Sunny Day,” long car rides, Sunday hikes, farms, covered bridges, holding hands and taking pictures. Lots of pictures.

Here are a few I’ve been meaning to post for a while:

Another sunny day, I met you up in the garden
You were digging plants, I dug you, beg your pardon
I took a photograph of you in the herbaceous border
It broke the heart of men and flowers and girls and trees

Another rainy day, we’re trapped inside with a train set
Chocolate on the boil, steamy windows when we met
You’ve got the attic window looking out on the cathedral
And on a Sunday evening bells ring out in the dusk

Another day in June, we’ll pick eleven for football
We’re playing for our lives, the referee gives us fuck-all
I saw you in the corner of my eye on the sidelines
Your dark mascara bids me to historical deeds

Everybody’s gone, you picked me up for a long drive
We take the tourist route, the nights are light until midnight
We took the evening ferry over to the peninsula

We found the avenue of trees, went up to the hill
That crazy avenue of trees, I’m living there still

There’s something in my eye, a little midge so beguiling
Sacrificed his life to bring us both eye to eye
I heard the Eskimos remove obstructions with tongues, dear
You missed my eye, I wonder why I didn’t complain
You missed my eye, I wonder why, please do it again

I am finding it so difficult to stop myself posting a new song on here everyday. This blog has really opened my eyes to how much i love lyrics. It’s opened my eyes to how much of a massive emo loser I am. This is something i’m going to have to come to terms with. At least, i’m not this guy/girl.

Anyway, to stop my emotions ruling this blog, and because the last song was utterly depressing, enter, Belle and Sebastian. The Scottish x-piece are one of the most underrated bands out there. The Boy With the Arab Strap changed the way i listened to music. The melodic folk layered with beautiful Scottish vocals would send even the hardiest metal fan into a utopian daydream. The song I’ve chosen to talk about today is A Summer Wasting taken from the aforementioned album.

This song dragged me kicking and screaming through my A-level revision. The thought of “seven weeks of river walkways, seven weeks of staying up all night” was the most beautiful relief when you had been reading about the differences between Disraeli and Gladstone for 5 hours. I must have listened to this musical heroin at least a hundred times charting my voyage from History, through Chemistry, and onto the dreaded English Literature; this song portrayed summer as such lazy escapism that I knew i had to just grit my teeth, close my eyes and hope that any 3-hour exams passed me by without realising it. The one line in particular that assisted my struggle for lazy summer days was this:

“Seven weeks of reading papers”

There is so much to that line. It is not just about reading the newspaper, it’s about having the free time to do what you want; to be able to browse G2 at your leisure; to be able to have cereal 3 times a day just becuase you couldn’t be bothered to make anything else (diet is not important when you have nothing to do). It’s about waking up after 12, not bothering about dressing yourself (unless the window-cleaners were coming – I learnt that lesson the awkward way), and the spending the entire day sitting in the garden.

If Winter gets you down - which it shouldn’t because Winter is marvellous; cold, crisp mornings where you can see your breath, and the freezing air shudders your body awake are what i live for – then listen to this song. If the squelch of dead Autumn leaves is slowly destroying your soul., this song is your friend. Next week, more depressing songs about people dying in crashes.

I never have a bad thing to report

You’re my picture on the wall
You’re my vision in the hall
You’re the one I’m talking to
When I get in from my work
You are my girl, and you don’t even know it
I am living out the life of a poet
I am the jester in the ancient court
You’re the funny little frog in my throat

My eye sight’s fading, my hearing’s dim
I can’t get insured for the state I’m in
I’m a danger to myself I’ve been starting fights
At the party at the club on a Saturday night
But I don’t get disapproving from my girl
She gets the all highlights wrapped in pearls

You’re my picture on the wall
You’re my vision in the hall
You’re the one I’m talking to
When I get in from my work
You are my girl, and you don’t even know it
I am living out the life of a poet
I am the jester in the ancient court
You’re the funny little frog in my throat

I had a conversation with you at night
It’s a little one sided but that’s all right
I tell you in the kitchen about my day
You sit on the bed in the dark, changing places
With the ghost that was there before you came
You’ve come to save my life again

I don’t dare to touch your hand
I don’t dare to think of you
In a physical way
And I don’t know how you smell
You are the cover of my magazine
You’re my fashion tip, a living museum
I’d pay to visit you on rainy Sundays
I’ll maybe tell you all about it someday
