If you are in the NYC area anytime this winter, stop at the Met and see the George Bellows exhibition. The show will be on view until February 18, 2013. The show demonstrates Bellows’ masterful control of color and figure – conjuring movement with subtle strokes of hue, value and chroma.

The other show of note starts February 8 at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. The exhibition will feature the talented Ghanaian artist El Anatsui. I remember the first time I saw his piece Dusasa II at the Met. He painstakingly assembles sculptures from found materials such as discarded aluminum caps or seals from liquor bottles, which he then flattens, shapes, perforates, and assembles with copper wire. Basically, recycling on steroids. So, plan your trip to our lovely city in February and catch both shows and then step out for a bite at one of our lovely cafés.

You can tell a lot about a person just by listening to their voice. Firstly, you can usually determine their sex. This is on account of most men having low voices, a product of their long vocal tracts and thick vocal cords, which developed in the presence of high testosterone levels during their teenage years. Following this, you can often work out their approximate age, pinpoint their mood, and perhaps even guess how healthy or attractive they are. You know almost instantly whether you recognise their voice and if you do, a brief pause might allow you to identify them by name.

Of course there are always individuals who buck the trends and confuse us. Hands up if the first time you heard Tracy Chapman you though she was a man (for those who do not know her, have a listen to her singing Fast Car). In this case, her voice is naturally low; likely an artefact of her development. In other cases however, people alter their voices to delude listeners. Someone undergoing a sex change might have speech therapy to raise the pitch of their voice or take hormone supplements to lower it, depending on their new gender. A politician might alter their voice to sound more appealing to voters (Margaret Thatcher is a famous example). Even in everyday life, we often mask how we truly feel, just by changing our tone.

Like humans, animals gather information about their peers by listening to them. So, is it also possible that they manipulate the sounds they make to mislead one another?

With this question in mind, the Bison of North America make an ideal study species, because during the mating season, males emit loud, expressive bellows in a bid to attract females (known as cows). These bellows are formed in two parts. First the pitch is determined, as air is forced up from the lungs and through the larynx. Then the vocal tract (between the larynx and mouth) acts as a filter, amplifying certain frequencies. These amplified frequencies are know as formants. A recent study found that big bison produced bellows containing formants at a very low pitch, and that this made them attractive to females. Essentially these low bellows were male bison showing off, saying ‘hey gorgeous, y’hear how deep my voice is? Im a big, sexy bison.’ Let’s just say, if Barry White had been a bison, he would would have gone down well with the cows.

However, some males were able to produce bellows containing formants at a lower pitch than they should have been, given their body size. As a result, some unattractive, light-weight males were copulating as much as attractive, heavy males because they had managed to match their bellows. This was a surprise finding in this species because of their bodily proportions. These are similar to those of animals that have vocal tracts of a fixed length (ox and reindeer), meaning that Bison vocal tracts were also likely to be fixed. As vocal tract length dictates the formant frequencies an animal can produce, a set vocal tract length should mean set formant frequencies. Bison should not have been able to produce varying formant frequencies and misleading information about their size, but they did.

Further tests are being carried out by the scientists involved to work out what is going on. Yet if, as this study indicates, these bison do alter their vocal tract length dispite their proportions, it is possible that we are observing the evolution of a new ability in this species.

In macro photography we are supplied with a variety of components for fine-tuning focus. This equipment includes focus slider rails and built-in sliders as part of a bellows. All of these devices facilitate changes in focus by moving the camera closer or more distant from the subject.

All of these components work quite well; some better than others. A well-made slider (above) can provide infinite adjustments in focus with extremely small changes in distance. These are ideal for gross specimens or single shot macro images.

However, when enhanced depth of field of tiny subjects is required through focus stacking, moving the camera may not be the most ideal method of changing point of focus. With very small insects like the bee above for instance, many exposures–perhaps 50 or more– must be produced over a distance of less than one centimeter.

Several problems are presented. First, the mass of the camera, bellows, and lens assembly is great. Moving it smoothly and accurately may not be possible. Second, the focusing rack and pinion may have coarse threads, not suitable of minute adjustments. Further, the camera, bellows and lens combination when moved is subject to unwanted vibrations. The answer therefore, is to move the subject, leaving the camera solidly stationary.

Macro subjects like those encountered for focus stacking are most frequently tiny and present no above mentioned problems. They are small, lightweight and can be easily and smoothly moved. And making repeated movements at uniform dimensions is practical. All this suggests that moving the subject instead of the camera is an ideal solution.

In my photography, I use two devices. For single shot macro I have converted an Olympus microscope stage for an X-Y-Z motion platform in the image below. It has a movement of 3 inches in left-right and fore-aft directions and a vertical movement of just under 1 inch. In addition, it has a 2 x 3 inch hole for sub stage illumination. All movement controls are under the stage so they are perfectly out of the way.

For focus stacking I use a single-axis micrometer linear positioning stage. Movements are possible along the lens axis for focus stacking in uniform increments as small as 0.001 inch. The movement for this stage is only one inch, but that is more than adequate for most focus stacking tasks. To center and align the subject, I use the gear head on my heavy duty Gitzo tripod. As illustrated in the photograph below, everything is locked down tight. Consistent, vibration-free images are possible with this set-up.

For the ultimate in focus stacking, a motorized linear positioner like StackShot® by Cognisys makes life easy. The price is affordable if a lot of focus stacking photography is required. Even with the StackShot it still makes perfect sense to move the mole hill not the mountain!

Well my friends, 2012 is coming to a close and as I look back it has been quite a strong year for experimental music. We also just celebrated the one year anniversary of this mix series, and nearly a year of ACL, so the completion of this year has added significance for us. For those of you just tuning in as a result of our end of year lists, welcome to the fold! And for those of you who’ve been with us since the beginning, or even followed our work at The Silent Ballet and other sites, we really can’t express how much we appreciate your continued support. So this last mix of the year is something of a holiday gift to you all, two and a half hours of some of my favorite moments from the past year. In the end I drew on something like 45 albums, plus some film and news quotes, field-recordings, and more. I tried to maintain a flow and overall coherence to the mix, which was not easy task considering how much drone music I managed to include. On some level I wanted to respect the integrity of the track but I also wanted to achieve some manner of coherence to the mix itself. I rarely let a track run longer than three minutes without mixing it with something else, so at times a drone track might be interwoven with another track or field-recording. To the artists whose tracks I have mashed up, my sincerest apologies! I even worked in some whale and camel recordings. I know, it sounds strange, but I hope you enjoy. (Joseph Sannicandro)

May I Introduce my Uilleann Practice Set

I thought that I would introduce my Uilleann Practice Set to put my practice in some context. The history about how I got to this set is in my About Section.

The chanter was made by Michael Vignoles from Galway, Ireland.

Its pretty basic with no keys (wouldn’t know what to do with them if I had them…. yet). You can see that I have had to tape (significantly) the lower notes to get them in tune. I am still not sure if this is a reed issue or a chanter issue.

My bag is made my Brad Angus from Vancouver, WA. I had a problem with the bag that came with the chanter from Vignoles. That bag leaked. Michael Vignoles makes his bags from a kind of synthetic material like naugahyde, that is leak proof and then covers that with a think leather, I think for looks. I did not know that and try to “season” the bag with one of the many beeswax recipes on the internet. It was a total failure. Brad helped me find the leak. It looked like a knife cut on the naugahyde that Michael had tried a glue fix on and it had come apart. BTW Mike took the bag back and fixed it for free.

Anyway…. Brad made me a really nice, leak proof, leather bag with a nice cover ( he refers to them as nice pajamas). I like this bag a lot.

My bellows came with the half set from Vignoles. It has held up pretty good with no leaks. The straps are a bit odd in that I think they were set up for someone with a build like Popeye or some thing. When I wear a T shirt I have to pull the arm strap to its tightest. And while I am a big guy with a 38″ waist, I was running out of holes on the waist belt. So I replaced it with a larger belt which was easy to do. The bellows are good, I guess the only complaint that I have is that the inlet cap occasionally gets blocked by my arm. I have seen other designs that have holes at the sides near the base so that this would not happen.

As for the reeds. None of the Vignoles reeds work now. Some make the chanter way too sharp without being able to do anything to flatten it. Some (he gave me several with the practice set) will not allow for a back d or anything that works well in the second octave. I gave the reeds to Brad to see if he could fix them but he could not. Maybe they were just too old because I am sure at least one worked before Michael sent them over.

So I got a couple of reeds from Brad Angus. One works the best. The lower octave is mostly in tune with some taping. I can easily get a hard bottom D. The upper octave is a little sharp but ok.

The other reed that I got is kind of interesting. Its a Howard Music Reed. He claims that his reeds are made so well that they will work in most chanters. I had to try it. The end of the staple had teflon tape over shrink wrap tubing. It was too big for my chanter. After removing that and rewrapping it with waxed hemp I put in in my chanter. After a little depth adjustment and playing with the bridle a bit. It did play well and in tune. I needed a little less tape on the lower octave holes but I did need some on the back D. I found that jumping to the second octave much easier. BUT…. I could not get that nice bottom hard D that is so easy to get in the Angus reed…… Grrrrr…. nothing is perfect on this instrument. I tried scrapping it some. But since I dont know what i am doing i was afraid to go too far.

So that is my set up.

I will have a new Brad Angus Chanter in a day or two…. and will post info on that later.

Taiji Day 284: Heavy Breath

Today, I did the first qi gong form, “Five Golden Coins.” And then I had to engage in a round of heavy breathwork to get my heart in line with my breathing. Wow. There was something about how I did Five Golden Coins — speed, forcefulness, not really sure? — that put my heart into overdrive. I had to pause and take about forty deep breaths, slowly and controlled, before it felt like my breathing had caught up with my heart.

Not that my heart had slowed down. It felt like it was beating incredibly hard and fast in my chest. Except, of course, it wasn’t. It was only my perception; a quick check of my pulse in the wrist and in the throat confirmed that I wasn’t dying, or experiencing heart arrhythmia. I was just… waking up. And that means I wasn’t awake when I brought my heels together and then stepped out into horse stance to begin the form. Then, when I did the form, my body woke up rapidly into wakeful heart awareness, and thought to itself, “Wow, we need a lot more oxygen!”

And the body provided, by shifting my breathing pattern appropriately. Without me doing a thing.

This is what made it so unnerving, of course. If you do tai chi every day, sooner or later this will happen: you will overextend your body’s capacity to work, and the body will shift into overdrive in some other fashion to catch up, and bring about equilibrium. The amount of oxygen required for doing a simple tai chi routine will be considerably larger than you have given your lungs with your fantasy attempt at careful, regulated breathing, and your body will respond by setting your chest heaving to put enough air into your lungs. And you will think, “Wow, I’m really out of shape. I need to work out more.” But then, when you work out, you will find (guess what?) that your body will continue to resist efforts to control your breathing patterns, if those breath patterns are out of whack compared with how much air your body actually needs.

This isn’t a thing you’re going to get under control. Your body needs oxygen, and it will override your mind to make sure it gets enough.

Let the body do its job. Learn to breathe effectively, by breathing naturally. Even if that means heaving like a bellows after your first tai chi routine of the day.

Francois Couperin (1668 – 1733), was a composer and organist to Louise XIV. He was also a harpsichordist and published works addressing fingering, ornamentation and other skills of harpsichord performance.

The organ had already developed a rather rich history which he inherited. It was first developed during the Middle Ages and compositions for it bloomed in the Baroque era. Modern pipe organ is quite similar to that which Couperin played and for which he composed. Most people know that the pipe organ produces it sounds with a stream of air which flows into and through a pipe. The harpsichord is less familiar to us both by look and by sound. It is the precursor of the modern piano looking similar to it and similarly strung, tuned and arranged upon a wood or metal frame within a curved cabinet; however, rather than the strings being struck with a felt hammer, it’s tone was produced by the action of the keys drawing a moderately flexible plectrum across the string much as a guitarist plucks the strings of the guitar. Harpsichords could have two different keyboards, much as that of the organ, one of which could play soft and another loud. It was commonly used as a keyboard instrument solo or as an instrument in an orchestra, or as an accompaniment for voice or instrument throughout the Baroque era, through the Rococo Era and into the early Classical Era (from approximately 1600 – 1750)
Couperin published much music for the harpsichord, much of it in “ordres,” which might be a collections of dances or descriptive of a mood, a place, or an action, much as a “suite”in the compositions of Bach. His writing is very much indicative of the influence of the Doctrine of Affections, in which different keys were associated with different moods, and different melodic lines, ornaments and tempos associated with different affects. One characteristic of Baroque music in the Doctrine of Affections is a musical device known as a “sigh” which was a melodic and harmonic device in which the end of a phrase consisted of a dissonance on a strong beat of the measure which was then resolve on a weak beat or weak part of the beat. Moreover, Couperin’s music became so descriptive as to be picturesque with specifically associative titles such as “the mysterious barricades” Jordi Savall, an early – music expert, called him the “poet musician par excellence.” His style and technique of compositions for harpsichord would influence J.S. Bach in his compositions both for harpsichord and for orchestra, which were designated as “suites,” rather than “ordres.” His descriptive music would later be developed by Strauss into even more descriptive tone poems.

The Baroque eras a time when musical form developed into richer and more complex forms. Polyphony predominated with its fugues, cannons, and imitative or dialogical interplay of the voices; but composers were also developing more homophonic textures. Much as the liturgical music of the individual parts of the mass developed from individual settings to an artistic grouping of the whole, so, suites, ordres, and other multi-part collections were composed so that not only were the parts were composed with the sense of wholeness standing alone, but they also provided some contrast to maintain the interest while complementing each other. Typically, a three – part form would begin allegro (or fast), followed by a middle section of a slower tempo (such as Largo), and concluded with a final section of a faster tempo. Or, it could begin and end with a slower tempo, with a faster middle section.

When I was a little kid we had an old reed organ, the kind you operate by pumping the foot bellows to allow the keys to make sounds. It preceded the player piano we later acquired, and was where my interest in playing the keyboard started.

Recently I visited the home of an old friend, and was delighted to see that when their modern piano was moved to their daughter’s home, its place was filled by a very lovely reed organ, one far more ornate than the one I remembered from my childhood home.

From a few weeks ago, I started working on something new. something completely outside of architecture domain, and totally different of what I usually post here.
Because of my new job in Belman, i became very interested in functionality and design of expansion joints, what are also known as compensators, as they compensate for the thermal movement. So my project is a new concept of pipe expansion joints, how they look like and what they are used for in the petrochemical industry.

Expansion joints are necessary in systems that convey high temperature commodities such as steam or exhaust gases. A typical type of expansion joint for pipe systems is a bellows which can be manufactured from metal (most commonly stainless steel), plastic (such as PTFE), or an elastomer such as rubber. The bellows are designed to withstand the internal pressures of the pipe, but are flexible enough to accept the axial, lateral, and angular deflections. They are also designed for other criteria, such as noise absorption, anti-vibration, earthquake movement, and building settlement.
