When I said I might have to wear this happy polka dot shirt again to make it through today, I wasn’t joking. It’s almost April, and Indianapolis got 9″ of snow. That is simply uncalled for.

Anyone else a “How I Met Your Mother” fan? If you’re not familiar, there’s a very minor recurring character named Patrice who works with Robin, one of the main characters. For whatever reason Robin gets really worked up and yells at Patrice every time she says something. If you want to see what I’m talking about watch this video. Anyway, I feel like this snowstorm is my Patrice. The snow’s all like, “Hey, I can still come out and play,” and I’m like, “IT’S SPRING! NOBODY ASKED YOU, PATRICE! I MEAN SNOW!”

On the bright side, I’m really in the holiday spirit now. Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas!

I felt the need to dress a little festive today, as I always do this time of year (So head’s up, you’re in for a lot of red in up coming outfit posts!).  Before arriving to my son’s classroom today I would have titled this outfit “Christmas Casual”, however a little girl in his class said I looked like Mrs. Claus so maybe I should title this outfit “Mrs. Claus”.  I just hope it was the red and white together that conjured up the image of Mrs. Claus and not that she thought I looked old or chubby.  Ha, ha!  

Am I going to let her comment make me feel self conscious and send me to the scale checking my poundage or gazing in the mirror for wrinkles or my first gray hair?  Absolutely not.  I think she just liked my Christmasy look and I’ll definitely be rocking my “Mrs. Claus” outfit again!

On a side note, I’m totally loving my hair today!  And to think this happened because I was too lazy to take an extra 5 mins to blow dry my bangs forward and straighten them!  Here’s to laziness!

Today we are showing two versions of a plaid shirt. On the right is my before look- which Kara so lovingly described as ‘you look like you are in your pajamas!’

I think she’s right!

These loose, baggy cargos have no shape and do indeed look like jammies. Maybe that’s why they’re so comfortable.

On the left I have traded out the baggys for my new skinny cargos. I’ve layered a sweater over my plaid shirt and then, to define my waist, I added a belt.

To finish the look, I threw on a necklace. Best of all, my plaid shirt is from Target (love a bargain).

Kara, on the other hand, is wearing a plaid shirt from J Crew. Hers is paired with skinny jeans, a thin wool sweater and then she’s also added a necklace.  My favorite part of her outfit is these fabulous J Crew booties. They are so comfy and so cute- and definitely on my wish list for next year…

To those of you who have been reading for a while, you know I’ve tried plaid shirts several ways and failed miserably each time. I think I finally got it right today! Go me!

An alternative to the sweater is a denim jacket. This cropped and fitted one works.

I love how sometimes you can throw together bits and pieces from two different worlds and end up with something you love. Take this button up and key winter knit for instance that I paired with a maxi skirt and combat boots-love it so much that I don’t want to take it off! It’s such a comfortable outfit that works for both the weekend or the office. It gives off a very put together vibe with my collar buttoned all the way. But then, the blue polka dot tights and grungy combat boots say something completely different.  Instead of lady like demure-it’s more like, bring it on world cause I’m fearless and ready for you!

Anyway, in the winter I’m always up for experimenting with items that contrast in order to create something new and exciting. Sometimes it works…sometimes not so much…I do however, always remember to belt it all in so I don’t lose my shape or get eaten alive by a maxi skirt.

I’m spending this weekend relaxing with my family in Pismo Beach, probably my favorite place to be. Not exactly the most glamorous California coastal town, but definitely the one nearest to my heart. We’re staying at a friend of the family’s house I’ve been staying at since as long as I can remember, and everything about it brings back so many fond memories. Since the weather usually stays in the 50s (overcast, salty, I love it!) and I hope to spend most of the time eating fresh fish tacos (and other homemade delights from my mom and grandma), playing in the sand with my adorable little cousins, playing various games (gin rummy, monopoly, bananagrams) with the fam, and painting – I thought I’d post a few cozy (but cute) pieces I will be lounging around the house in for the fourth. I love my black American Apparel leggings. They can be completely casual with an oversized sweatshirt and Uggs while I’m hanging in the house and then If I throw on a nice sweater with some ballet flats I can wear them out to dinner. I like the zipper on these Free People ones.
