Capslock spent glutton-day in a magical land in a faraway place…Sixburgh: home of $40 gallons of Belvedere, the boy you fell in love with, fry sandwiches,  churches where you can drink beer at the alter, blue doors marking the homes of virgin daughters, bars giving out candy necklaces, and amish children with light sabers. Capslock isn’t exactly sure how long we were there, what happened, or how we got home. But we think we liked it.

Este maravilhoso quadro do austríaco Gustav Klimt está localizado no museu Obere Belvedere (Superior, na Galeria Austríaca) em Viena, Áustria. De acordo com alguns, a obra reflete o próprio Klimt com sua amada Emile; para mim, um quadro muito romântico, que ficará para sempre entre os meus prediletos.

O rapaz de cabelos cacheadinhos com uma coroa de folhinhas, a moça em seus braços, o ar de proteção, de amor, de romantismo, a prevalência do dourado e ao mesmo tempo o colorido são os elementos que me chamam a atenção. Há outras interpretações atuais para este mesmo quadro, de que a moça estaria resistindo às investidas do rapaz. Bom, eu prefiro acreditar que é uma cena de carinho, sem submissões ou recusa por parte da moça (deve ser porque sou uma pisciana totalmente romântica).

Eu gostei tanto, mas tanto, desse quadro que acabei comprando, no museu, alguns souvenirs em que ele está estampado, como um lápis (sou colecionadora), um espelho de bolsa, uma caixinha em lata e um pequeno porta-jóias, os quais seguem em foto abaixo:

Compramos as entradas e voltamos para o Belvedere Superior onde estão as obras de Klimt. Entramos e fomos direto para o setor onde estão as obras a partir de 1900. Lá encontramos alguns Monet, um Degas, um Renoir e outros impressionistas. Chegamos ao Beijo, obra mestre de Klimt, assim como Judith e Halofantes, dentre outras. Depois visitamos o resto da galeria que é dominada por pintores austríacos de várias épocas. Vimos belas esculturas de Rodin”.

A Assessoria de Modernização de informática da Prefeitura, através da Secretaria de Saúde, também otimizou o serviço de pedidos de exames com o sistema denominado MB atendimento,  que integra e agiliza as solicitações de marcação de exames.

Segundo Igor de Oliveira, diretor de Informática da Prefeitura, outros projetos estão sendo estudados para implantação de novos pontos de internet gratuita, além da qualidade dos sistemas utilizados. “Já estamos em negociações para que outros pontos de internet popular possam ser instalados, como na Praça das Mangueiras, na praça da igreja Nossa Senhora de Fátima, na prainha e no BTN, entre outros, além de outros projetos que a administração de Anilton está se preocupando em oferecer à população como a ampliação dos serviços do cidadão online. Todos os projetos estão voltados para que Paulo Afonso venha a ser considerada de fato uma cidade digital”, enfatizou o diretor.

După cele 2 zile pierdute pe drum (prima, a doua) am ajuns în sfârșit în orașul muzicii. Ne-am cazat la hotelul Best Western Reither la recomandarea lui Lucian Stanciu și nu am regretat nici o secundă. Din ce bănuiesc hotelul este deținut de un român astfel încât personalul era în proporție destul de mare din România, inclusiv cei care îl administrau zi de zi. Acesta a fost un lucru bun pentru că engleza mea cu care am pretenția că mă pot descurca oriunde a fost un pic inutilă prin Austria, lucru ce l-am descoperit destul de repede (să nu uităm și doamna din vamă ce vindea vignete și care nu vorbea engleza).

Am lăsat mașina în fața hotelului (după ce ne-a fost confirmat faptul că nu riscăm să ne trezim cu ea ridicată sau cu o amendă – de fapt parcarea gratuită în fața hotelului a fost un bonus consistent, pentru o zi de parcare în centru trebuind să scoți din buzunar 17 euro) și am plecat pe jos fără o țintă anume. Am luat o hartă (gratuită, binețeles) din holul hotelului și în cele din urmă am ajuns la Schönbrunn și am făcut o plimbare (nu foarte scurtă pentru că parcul e imens) și primele poze din Viena prin grădinile ce înconjoară palatul. Ne-am întors apoi la hotel trecând printr-o zonă plină de magazine și restaurante chinezești. Dar cum mâncare chinezească pot găsi și în Galați am preferat să mâncăm la hotel câte un schnitzel vienez cât se poate de original (cel puțin așa am fost asigurați). La masă am avut încă o dată probleme cu engleza, domnișoara care ne-a servit vorbind doar germana (aveam să descoperim în curând că mai toți chelnerii deși vorbesc cu tine numai în germană vorbesc o engleză perfectă când îți aduc nota). Din fericire am fost ajutați de unul din românii care am observat că făceau de toate prin hotel, care ne-a și făcut câteva recomandări. Am încheiat seara cu o altă mică plimbare cu același scop de a găsi un bancomat (bancomatele nu sunt așa de multe ca în România, lucru normal pentru că poți folosi cardul la orice magazin) descoperind o zonă comercială care se anima cu precădere seara.

A doua zi planul includea în principal palatul imperial și zona centrală. Am plecat nu foarte devreme după un mic dejun bufet căruia nu am avut ce să îi reprosăm și primul lucru a fost să ne cumpărăm abonamente de 3 zile pe transportul în comun (varianta a doua era Vienna Card, dar cum nu eram convinși că o să vizităm multe muzee ca să se merite reducerile, am ales un simplu abonament). O altă lovitură în orgoliul meu de român ce se vrea educat a fost lipsa barierelor la intrarea în metrou. Poate intra oricine, nu există cineva care să te urmărească, nu cred că sunt nici camere. Noi a trebuit să validăm abonamentul prima dată, dupa aceea era suficient să îl avem la noi. Și contrar așteptărilor nu avea nici un chip sau ceva magnetic care să sune alarma, era o simplă bucată de hârtie. Am rămas cu această imagine și am încercat să îmi închipui un București cu aceleași obiceiuri, dar nu am reușit. Vorba cuiva, probabil eram puținii români care mergeau cu bilet în Viena.

Am reușit să vedem apartamentele imperiale, colecția de argintării și muzeul Sisi, dar din amintirile mele nu se apropie de ceea ce am văzut la Peleș. Aici am fost un pic dezamăgit, însă muzeul merită vizitat, fără doar și poate. Apoi am făcut o plimbare pe lângă Parlament, ajungând la Primăria, în fața căreia era organizat un festival de film, și terminând cu Votivkirhe ce era în renovare. Ne-am restras apoi spre hotel, fiind rupți de oboseală. Am descărcat pozele și am făcut uz de conexiunea wireless gratuită ca să arătăm celor de acasă pe unde am umblat.

Ziua a treia a constat într-o vizită la Donauturm, o plimbare cu vaporul pe Dunăre și o vizită prin grădinile palatului Belvedere. Turnul din Viena e plasat un pic cam departe de orice stație de metrou (10-15 minute de mers lejer până la Alte Donau), dar plimbarea prin parcul în care este situat merită, mai ales că puteți vedea lebedele care au supraviețuit invaziei din anii ‘90 . Un alt interesant care poate fi văzut în drum spre turn este stația de metrou Donauinsel localizată chiar pe un pod ce traversează Dunărea.

De la turn am cumpărat un bilet combinat care include o urcare cu liftul și o croazieră pe Dunăre, economisind astfel vreo 3 euro de persoană (știu nu e mult, dar dacă oricum aveam în plan o croazieră, de ce să nu profităm?). Așteptând liftul am remarcat sistemul care îți arată poziția celor 2 lifturi din care puteai deduce viteza de urcare destul de mare (22 km/h), dar mult mai mică decât cea experimentată în CN Tower (15 m/s = 54km/h). Odată urcați în lift am putut să urmărim cum liftul urcă prin interiorul turnului datorită deschiderii din tavan, iar la coborâre am fost  pregătit și am făcut chiar și un film. Priveliștea este, după cum probabil vă așteptați, incredibilă, parcul de sub turn fiind o pată extraordinară de culoare. Merită și o cafea băută la înălțime, cele două restaurante (de fapt o cafenea și un restaurant) fiind rotative, o rotație completă fiind efectuată în aproximativ 25 de minute.

Croaziera pe Dunăre este plăcută dacă nu este o zi prea însorită sau dacă  prinzi loc la umbră. Din păcate noi nu am reușit să ne încadrăm în nici una din categorii, dar experiența trecerii printr-o ecluză este interesantă (jumătate din croazieră are loc pe canalul ce trece prin oraș).

După ce am părăsit vaporul ne-am oprit pentru câteva zeci de minute la muzeul fluturilor amenajat în Casa cu palmieri de lângă palatul imperial (care ne-a cam dezamăgit, ne așteptam să vedem mult mai multe specii) iar apoi am luat-o încetișor spre palatul Belvedere unde am petrecut câteva zeci de minute prin grădini (care parțial erau în renovare, din păcate) ajungând apoi la un monument ridicat în cinstea soldașilor ruși și la o arteziană spectaculoasă, care ne-a dăruit și un foarte frumos curcubeu. De acolo drumul ne-a dus tocmai la hotel unde am luat o cină serioasă, ca pentru niște oameni ce sunt la cură de îngrășare

Ziua a patra a fost cea care m-a surprins cel mai mult. Am început cu o vizită la Haus de Meeres, un fel de grădină zoologică indoor care este un adevărat paradis atât pentru copii cât și pentru părinți. Câteva lucruri care m-au impresionat: acvariul de jos unde poți băga mâna și să atingi peștii, traseul amenajat pentru furnicile tăietoare de frunze și casa tropicală unde păsările sunt libere și zboară în jurul tău alături de maimuțe de talie mică (marmoset) care vin incredibil de aproape de oameni. A urmat o vizită prin parcul de distracție Prater, unde mă interesa în mod special un roller-coaster interesant numit Volare. Pot să vă spun că senzația este extraordinară, cred că este aproape de ce simt piloții de formula 1, la sfârșit mușchii gâtului s-au resimțit pentru câteva minute. Ziua am încheiat-o la Subway unde am încercat câteva sandwich-uri noi (de când am descoperit Subway în Ottawa sunt un mare fan).

Ultima zi petrecută în Viena a fost dedicată palatului Schönbrunn unde am preferat să cumpărăt un Classic Pass Light ce permitea turul mare al palatului, acces la grădina privată, acces la Gloriette și Labirintul. Interiorul palatului este mai frumos decât cel imperial, grădinile și fântânile sunt extraordinare, priveliștea de pe Gloriette este impresionantă (cam multe cuvinte mari, dar meritate cu prisosință). O vizită la Tiergarten, cel mai vechi zoo din Europa este obligatorie și trebuie să recunosc că deși spațiul este mult mai mic decât în cazul altor grădini zoologice pe care le-am vizitat, organizarea este foarte bine pusă la punct. Vedetele grădinii sunt urșii panda gigant care sunt extraordinari, dar nu aș renunța la urangutani, lei, urși polari, bizoni (nu cei din trafic) și nu numai. La ieșirea din zoo am trecut prin grădina japoneză și apoi am intrat în Labirint. Trebuie să recunosc că este mult mai interesant decât mă puteam gândi inițial, ne-am simțit cu adevărat bine când am ajuns la capăt. Toate acestea ne-am ocupat o zi întreagă, ajungând rupți de oboseală la hotel. Și când ne gândeam că urma să plecăm a doua zi…

MP caught making 110 trips abroad, but fails to ask a question to the Prime Minister in Parliament

Erith and Thamesmead’s Labour MP John Austin has been exposed on Channel 4’s Dispatches programme MPs, Planes and Gravy Trains (28 September 2009) for his excessive number of foreign trips. Research from local Conservatives, which featured in the programme, has found that John ‘Airmiles’ Austin has been making up to 4 trips abroad per month costing tax-payers up to £7,000 per trip. Earlier this year Mr Austin had also been caught up in the MPs’ expenses scandal after receiving tax-payers’ money for maintaining and renovating his second homes in Rotherhithe and Southwark, despite the Erith and Thamesmead constituency being less than one hour from Westminster by public transport.

Lesnes Abbey Councillor John Davey (Erith and Thamesmead Conservative Association Chairman) discussed John Austin’s shameful record on the Dispatches programme. He said:

“Sadly local people are not getting the representation and respect they deserve from John Austin. A Member of Parliament’s first priority should be to support their residents, but Mr Austin is more interested in flying abroad at the tax-payers’ expense or renovating his tax-payer-funded second homes in Southwark and Rotherhithe. On the door step local people are very angry with John Austin. It’s a shame he’s too busy travelling abroad or living in his second home to face them himself and hear how disappointed they are with him.”

Belvedere Councillor David Leaf (Erith and Thamesmead Conservative Association Deputy Chairman), who had previously challenged John Austin to provide an ‘explanation or resignation’ for his excessive foreign travel and poor Parliamentary record, added:

“After local Conservatives exposed that John Austin was making more trips abroad than appearances in the House of Commons, he announced he would resign at the next General Election. Now we know the extent of his foreign travel, we can all see ‘Junket John’ is unwilling to support local residents. He should resign immediately so local people can elect a new MP who will represent them.”

What John Austin does not want you to know:
• Since 1997, Mr Austin has made at least 110 mostly tax-payer funded overseas trips abroad. But in the same period has rarely spoken in the House of Commons and has failed to ask a question to the Prime Minister (his last question to the Prime Minister was to John Major in October 1996 when Mr Austin was MP for Woolwich). These trips have cost the tax-payer over £120,000.
• In the last year, Mr Austin has made just 2 brief speaking appearances in the House of Commons but has made 22 overseas trips.
• Since being re-elected in May 2005, Mr Austin has made over 85 overseas trips, averaging almost 2 per month and 20 per year.
• The cost to tax-payers of Mr Austin’s foreign travel is estimated as being at least £120,000.
• Despite claiming he would not accept trips funded by lobby groups and foreign Governments due to concerns about “the question of openness and accountability” (Sunday Times, 22 December 1996), Mr Austin has been on 9 trips funded by others, including a trip to Syria in 2002 paid for by a reported billionaire Syrian arms dealer, Mr Wafic al-Said.

Im Juli, während der Sommerferien, werden die Kinder auf die Felder geschickt und dürfen dort ackern.

It’s a very downtown, de rigeur, city thing to order martinis.  Perhaps because the Martini has been glamourized by Hollywood.   In Sex And The City, Carrie Bradshaw often noshed on Chinese takeout with her clique while downing Cosmopolitans.  And James Bond is known for taking his ’shaken, not stirred.’  While sitting on a barstool in a trendy cocktail lounge, pondering your evening’s poison, here are just a few thoughts to consider before ordering:

• Although hardcore martini drinkers swear by the gin martini, newer martini enthusiasts prefer vodka for its smoother taste.  I personally find premium vodkas with improved distilling processes, keep the hangover away.  This way you can wake up headache free and enjoy brunch before 1pm.  My friend A is a vodka conoisseur (so skilled, she is the only person I know who can name brands of vodka in a blinded taste test) and she swears by Grey Goose, Belvedere and Ketel One.
• Dry or dirty?  Did you ever wonder what each of these mean?  Dry refers to a reduced amount of vermouth in the cocktail while dirty is a term to describe the increased amount of olive brine added to a classic martini.
• With the resurgence of vodka martinis, there are so many new blended juice variations to choose from.  My personal favourite is the Sour Apple or the Lychee Martini.  For those with tropical tastes, there are ones with passion fruit, guava and mango.  Some creative restaurants even add a dash of champagne.  How delightful!
• In Toronto, you can find martinis aplenty at the cozy Souz Dal (636 College Street West) in the heart of Little Italy.  You can also enjoy a nice selection with dessert at The Drake at 1150 Queen Street West.   

Martini A Go-Go: Shaken or Stirred? Dirty or Dry?

There are pitfalls of being 6-foot-1, such as theater seats, flying coach, shopping for pants and anything with long sleeves, not wanting to rock a pair of 6-inch Christian Louboutins for fear of being stared at even more than usual and being hit on by diminutive men who are unable to stand on their money and see me eye to eye. And then there are the benefits: not having to torture myself in a pair of 6-inch Christian Louboutins, standing above most armpits, automatically distinguishing myself in a crowd and my newest fave benefit: two glasses of red wine a day.

For a bon vivant like me, it was music to my ears when Dr. Madaiah Revana, a Houston cardiologist and the man behind Revana Family Vineyard in Napa Valley, Alexana Winery in Oregon’s Willamette Valley and another winery in Argentina, told me that because of my height I could consume two glasses of red wine daily and not have it adversely affect my health. Take that you 5-feet women who should stick to one!

I had the pleasure of sitting next to Dr. Revana during a fabulous media dinner the other night at Belvedere, inside The Peninsula Beverly Hills. It’s a sin to nurse one glass of wine over a multi-course, fine dining experience and this group was not about to sin. We started with an amuse bouche of duck confit risotto with butternut squash, compliments of the talented Executive Chef James Overbaugh, then moved on to Dungeness crab chowder and Dungeness crab souffle (paired with the 2007 Alexana Pinot Gris) . The next course was pan roasted veal sweetbreads (paired with the 2006 Alexana Pinot Noir) followed by braised lamb shoulder and roasted lamb loin (paired with 2005 Revana Estate Cabernet Sauvignon). We finished with a plate of pistachio ice cream with strawberries, and a healthy serving of chocolate but by then no more wine was necessary.

Revana, planted in 1998, is fairly new on the wine scene  but already making news and selling out its limited production yearly. It’s no wonder why. Be sure to catch Dr. Revana discuss wine and its health benefits on the radio show I co-host, “What’s Cookin’ with the Bikini Chef Susan Irby,” on Sunday, Nov. 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. PT on KTLK AM 1150.

If I were not already towering over everyone then I would rock these. But I already get a backache bending down to chat with short folks at gatherings when I wear two-inch heels.

Repartons à nouveau sur les « toits » de notre belle île, avec un nouveau focus sur un point de vue : le belvédère de Bois court. Situé en bout de route après les dernières maisons de Bois Court (à hauteur du Vingt-Troisième, au dessus du Tampon), le belvédère, culminant à presque 1400m entouré par le gazon ainsi qu’une dizaine de kiosques, donne une vue imprenable sur les remparts de Cilaos et sur Grand Bassin, une centaines de mètres plus bas. Une plateforme en bois, gagnée sur le vide et accessible à tous est l’incontournable du lieu…

Au niveau de l’accessibilité aux PMR, commençons donc directement par le clou du spectacle : la fameuse plateforme. Effectivement cela vaut le déplacement rien que pour ça ! La vue est magnifique et possible à 180°. Le fait d’être au-dessus du vide est plus intéressant qu’un belvédère classique et on se sent pourtant parfaitement en sécurité. De plus la plateforme est quasi totalement accessible à tous. Mais pourquoi « quasi » ? Et bien d’abord elle n’est pas totalement (certes à quelques centimètres près) de plain-pied partout, mais surtout la vue, bouchée en partie par les barrières, n’est pas optimale pour quelqu’un en fauteuil. Cela dit pas de quoi être frustré car s’il n’y a pas trop de monde on fini par pouvoir admirer chaque recoin du panorama à travers les espaces. On peut même voir le bassin tout au fond avec sa belle cascade en voile de marié.

Jusque là on n’est pas trop déçu. Le problème c’est qu’en général on aura tendance à foncer droit au point de vue, or une fois fait que reste-t-il ? Et bien…comme il a été dit plus haut on s’aperçoit qu’on est venu rien que pour ça et c’est normal : il n’y a que ça !

Si vous êtes PMR, oubliez le pique-nique aux kiosques car ils sont sur des plateformes en béton (d’où marches de 10cm au moins) et les aires gazonnées sont inaccessibles, volontairement (par des tas de remblais), pour les voitures…et fauteuils par la même occasion. (photo 4)

Oubliez aussi l’arrêt pipi car il y a bien un chalet à toilettes (photo 3), dont l’accès est bon mais où les WC sont eux inaccessibles, le WC handicapé étant…démonté !! (photo 5)

A ce niveau de constat des éclaircicements s’imposent cependant. Après discussion avec le seul employé présent on apprend que :

- des incivilités à répétition ont aboutit au démontage du WC handicapé et toutes les toilettes sont fermées dès le samedi midi car après plus personne ne surveille du week-end…

- même raison pour les accès kiosque : si il ya chemin vraiment accessible jusqu’aux kiosques, les gens se gareraient devant.

- le site manquerait d’attention : une horloge hydraulique dont les abords ne sont pas sécurisés définitivement (autre que des barrières donc) depuis plusieurs mois, des nouvelles plantations décoratives abandonnées (arrosage ?)…etc. (photo 6)

Alors certes tout ceci reflète des opinions et de rapides constats, mais après un tour sur site (ce que j’ai fait donc) on comprend qu’il manque quelque chose à ce lieu. Peut-être un peu d’attention… Terminons sur une note positive tout de même car avec la plateforme, un parking réservé et des chemins en gravier bien tassés (attention tout de même en fauteuil manuel) il y a du bon et le panorama vaut le coup…c’est d’autant plus dommage.

yesterday afternoon, we played our first gig for complete strangers. last night, we left the event with new friends.

it was about a month ago when we first met natsuko and calvin. they still needed live music for their wedding, and they were surprised to find the sound they were looking for at all wrapped up, the shipping and gift store where travis works in mill valley.

at first, natsuko and calvin thought they were hearing a cd. they were delighted to find it was travis playing and fell in love with the feel of his songs and his enthusiasm for music. 

over the next month, we worked out via phone and email a song list of covers and originals for their wedding and reception. we played songs like “all you need is love” by the beatles, “oh what a day” by ingrid michaelson and “grow old with you” by adam sandler. it was really fun, and we learned some covers we might never have attempted otherwise.

the wedding was at calvin’s brother’s house in belvedere, right on the water. the reception at the lodge at tiburon was laid back with outdoor bar around fire pits and a nice intimate indoor room for dinner. it was an intimate event, with 30 or 40 guests.

i played my keyboard more than the guitar this time, and it affirmed everything about my recent decision to stay more key-friendly. i love the guitar, but the piano is really where i got my start and feel most comfortable. it will be fun, though, to play a bunch of instruments on the upcoming album.

we had an amazing time, and we learned that calvin and natsuko are great people. we were very happy to be a part of their special occasion.

that’s our last officially lined-up gig for awhile, although we would welcome more (send them our way)! otherwise, we’ll be practicing the songs for the album and getting our tracks up to chop.
