BELVIDERE JUNIOR SCHOOL – OPENING OF NEW BUILDING/CHRISTMAS FAIR & JUDGING BEST HAMPER COMPETITION

This afternoon we visited Belvidere Junior School, that just so happens to be located within my Monkmoor Ward. Our visit was to open the new block that includes the enterance to the school as well as new office and staff room accommodation, we then had a tour around the school and finally judge the Hamper Competition. The school Christmas Fair was also going on at the same time and music was provided by the schools own band, and yep they are good and the singers were just great I feel that they should be on the next round of Britains got Talent.

The ribbon cutting, it is always hard to get the timing right so that Bob can catch it on the camera, but this is as close as you can get it without being spot on, you only get one chance.

A student came forward and presented a basket of flowers to the Mayoress Tricia, they are now sitting on our dinning room table the centre piece.

The person on Keyboards looks a little old to be a student though!!!!!

The voices of these three students was music to the ear, really.

Here we are talking to the Headmaster, I thought, I have seen you somewhere before, yes on the keyboards with the band.

We had a fantastic time at the school and will be seeing more of them in the future. It was then time for us to leave to go to our next engagement.

MEOLE BRACE SCOUTS CONCERT

This evening we went to Meole Brace Church for a Concert/Carol Service with the Meole Brace Scout Group. As always the Scouts entertained us when they, with just a few pieces of wood and some rope made or should I say transformed theses pieces into a sign wishing us all a Merry Christmas.

Afterwards we all were invited for drinks and a mince pie in the hall next door. We had a warm welcome and the church was warm also so the atmosphere was just right for everyone to enjoy the event.

BELOW IS A BIO ABOUT MEOLE BRACE SCOUT AND GUIDE GROUP.

Meole Brace Scout Group was formed when Captain Kettlewell was elected to be the Scout Master on Thursday 30^th June 1910 in Meole Brace School Room, along with Mr Christy and Mr Henry Jones as under Scout Masters to form an association to start a Boy Scouts Troop in the Parish of Meole Village.

Since that date in 1910, Meole Brace Scouts have continued Scouting uninterrupted for the past 100 years to the present day. At the moment we have two Scout Troops, (Apaches & Mohawks), a Cub and a Brownie Pack.

Over a hundred young people attend the meetings each week with an age range from 8 to 16yrs and with upwards of over twenty Leaders and parent helpers. The groups meet every week during term time either in our Head Quarters inGreen Laneor out and about doing various activities. A balanced plan of activities is arranged each term for them to work towards achievement badges, The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and the Queens Scout Award.

Camps, hikes and outdoor adventures are continued during half terms and the summer holidays, giving all the young people the opportunity to tackle new skills and building their confidence.

The Leaders, Management Committee and Parent Helpers are a dedicated group of adults who commit to their posts voluntary.

Many of our former members in Scouting have gone onto be employed in varying areas of employment that has been influenced by their experiences gained in Scouting. We have a number of RAF, Army and Police Officers, Civil and Structural Engineers, Teachers, Accountants, Adventure Leaders and Countryside Managers to name but a few of their occupations.

The management committee of Group Chair, Treasurer, Secretary and parent representatives support the sections behind the scenes with fund raising, maintenance of the Scout Hut and managing the finances of the Group.

As reported in the Shropshire Star, I am campaigning to have the footbridge from the Frankwell Car Park to the Riverside Shopping Centre called “The Zutphen Bridge”. As many will know that we are twinned with Zutphen a town in Holland and this connection between the two towns goes back further than the official 1977 Twinning ceremony, also further back than the Second World War. In fact our association with Zutphen goes back as far as 1586, when a certain Sir Philip Sidney was killed whilst attempting to push the Spanish out of Zutphen. In Zutphen they have Shrewsbury a traffic island named after Shrewsbury, as they are Proud in being twinned with Shrewsbury, I feel we should show our pride in a similar way and what better than a bridge.
