Zach Galifianakis gave us an awesome SNL last Saturday and Kristen Wiig is sure to give us an amazin

Zach Galifianakis gave us an awesome SNL last Saturday and Kristen Wiig is sure to give us an amazing show this Saturday. I have to ask NBC and SNL one question though. Why has Rebel Wilson not been on the show this season? Apparently Ben Affleck is set for the season finale, a show which I felt Rebel should have had. I felt like she really could have closed down this season in an amazing way.

Rebel Wilson’s fame has only grown since her debut on Bridesmaids in 2011. Her popularity only has soared since Pitch Perfect last fall. I would consider Pitch Perfect to be her breakthrough role where she was given a lot of air time. Pitch Perfect has become a huge success since its home video release and along with it Rebel Wilson. Rebel WIlson’s next project is apparently a comedy show on ABC called Super Fun Night for ABC.

Rebel WIlson also just hosted the 2013 MTV Movie Awards, which I will have to say, she killed it. I think she has more than proven her comedy chops and it is surprising to me that she wasn’t asked to host this year. She would have been a better choice than Melissa McCarthy, whose second round of hosting SNL was more lackluster than her first round.

I guess I can always hold out hope that Rebel will get her chance to host SNL next season. Maybe we will even see her Saturday has a special guest on Kristen Wiig’s hosted show. I really think Rebel Wilson would be a ratings boost for SNL. Let me know in the comments if you think Rebel Wilson would be an amazing choice to host SNL?

Yes, folks it’s true. Camera Guy and I have reached an all new low: our first ever annual Thimmy Awa

Yes, folks it’s true. Camera Guy and I have reached an all new low: our first ever annual Thimmy Awards. These are virtual awards given in the form of words on a blog from the Thimons family for Oscar nominated movies. The Thimmy Awards will occur each May, typically a few months following the Oscars once all the nominated movies have finally come to RedBox so we don’t have to drop a full $10 on each movie we want to watch. Not that we’ve watched all the Oscar nominated movies or that ANY of this matters at all in real life, but here’s a quick summary/review on the ones we’ve watched so far:

ARGO- Fast paced and exciting. Argo didn’t leave your brain a minute to breathe or relax. It was a fantastic, hard-to-believe yet incredible true story…which is really why we enjoyed it. True stories always are the most impressive. The whole cast in the this movie was really excellent. Major downside for me, which was hard to get past, was Ben Affleck. I just don’t like him very much as an actor, so I really wish someone else had the lead role in this film. Very good movie, though.

LES MISERABLES- Wow. This was so emotional. Absolutely stunning performances by Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman. Jackman really blew me away. I never would have pinned him as a singer or such a dramatic actor, but it was truly incredible. Russell Crowe was okay as the Inspector Javert…they could have cast a better singer than him, sounded like he was strained for some of the notes. The filming was glorious, I love the way the colors were faded during the movie, giving a grim, sloppy feel to the film. The story can’t get any better than this- God’s mercy. This movie left both of us crying, which is always a good thing with movies!

LINCOLN- Very good. Albeit, and sorry to say coming from a history major, not one of my favorites. Maybe I picked the wrong time to watch it, but I found the movie very long, and hard to understand. Daniel Day Lewis was absolutely amazing portraying Lincoln, you could practically touch the gravity weighing on his soul during the tumultuous last two years of his presidency. I was really caught off guard when James Spader showed up in the film adding much needed comic relief to the story. Here’s the downside, I never actually got a chance to finish the movie because I fell asleep. So, yeah. But from what I watched it was very moving.

SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK- Coming from the director who brought you The Fighter, this story is about two very broken people, with monstrously huge issues to overcome. Gritty, messy, and gosh darn so realistic that you swear you have met this family before, or that you know those neighbors. It’s so..life like that it’s incredibly moving and inspiring to watch these two lead characters bring the best out in each other and conquer their past. This movie provided a very dignified look at the human person. Amidst such baggage we found that forgiveness and true love..in selflessly willing the good of the other…change is always possible and people are worthy of that change, that value. Soundtrack was awesome, the depiction of the Eagle’s football obsessed father was awesomely played out by Robert De Niro… my favorite movie so far.

SKYFALL- Exquisite. Elegant. Sleek. Obviously it was hugely entertaining because of its totally surreal action scenes. Seriously? Adjusting his tie in the midst of wrestling a villain on the roof of a speeding train? Only James Bond. What I loved most about this movie was the cinematography, so artsy! The whole movie was incredibly aesthetically pleasing, and not just because of Daniel Craig in a tuxedo was standing on a gondola, floating down a river with fireworks and floating candles behind him. All the scenes were very decorated, elaborate, sumptuous, glamour and glitz…giving a very unrealistic view of life in this world. So it was enjoyable to watch, but you don’t walk away with any food for thought.

Our favorites:Camera Guy can’t get enough of it, he loved Les Miserables and now he’s got all the kids singing “24601”…for me I chose Silver Linings Playbook. Hands down. I loved it. (Click Here to read my full review) However, not Oscar-worthy in my opinion. I think Jennifer Lawrence is a great actress but I kind of feel like they tossed her that Oscar as a bone to guilt her into fully embracing the culture of stardom—which she seems so entirely disinterested in. Oscars are practically sacred, so… no Oscar but I would give her a Thimmy Award…our dorky version of the Dundies.

Getting artsy-fartsy up in here…up in here.

My rating: 2 1/2 reels out of 5

There is a scene in (500) Days of Summer where Tom and Summer go to an art gallery. They try their best to explain how the art makes them feel but are only able to come up with one simple sentence. This is kind of the way I feel about Terrence Malick movie sometimes. A little background on Terrence Malick for some of my readers (thanks to some trivia from imdb). He created two masterpiece works early in his career, Badlands and Days of Heaven (both of which I still have yet to see). He then took a 20 year hiatus before coming out with The Thin Red Line (my favorite film of his) in 1998. He has a distinct style to his films. He often includes narration from one or more of his characters. Nature is usually a major element in his films. Visual dialects through images. Known as a bit of a recluse from public life and rarely gives interviews or makes appearances. Has been known to tell actors they’ll have big roles in the film but when the film is released, will find that their role was dramatically cut down or even cut out entirely. There is obviously a lot to this famed director. Most film buffs will know him. I often tell my friends that he is the most artsy-fartsy filmmaker I know. His vision is not for everyone; he is unconventional. His last movie, Tree of Life, movies theaters had to warn patrons on how the film doesn’t follow the traditional movie narrative. I’ve witnessed people leave 20 minutes into the movie because they were obviously bored. Best way to describe his movies; they are visual poetry. They are different from anything else you would ever see.

To The Wonder is a semi-autobiographical look at Terrence Malick, having married a woman from France and moving back to Texas with her. While traveling in Europe, Neil (Ben Affleck) meets Marina (Olga Kurylenko) and they fall in love. They travel back to his home in Oklahoma where problems with their relationship arises. Marina finds solace with a priest and fellow exile, Father Quintana (Javier Bardem), who is struggling with his vocation. And now is the part where I’m like Tom and Summer in that art gallery. “It’s so complex.” – Tom. “In a way, it says so much by saying so little” – Summer. To The Wonder deals with the theme of love in a philosophical way (Malick’s undergraduate work at Harvard was Philosophy). If there is anything that the movie showed me is that love is definitely a complicated thing, whether it’s the love between two people or if it’s the love of God.

I used to joke that it doesn’t seem that hard to act in a Terrence Malick film. All you have to do is use your body, not much dialogue involved. Unfortunately Ben Affleck has proved that it can be hard to act in his films (sorry Ben, I love the movies you direct!). According to imdb trivia, there was no script that was used during filming. Terrence Malick would give the actors pages of thoughts and independent lines every morning and he would ask them to play the emotions without speaking, just with their body. Minus Ben Affleck, everyone easily conveyed what they were thinking or feeling through their eyes and their body. And that’s the heart and soul of a Malick film, visual imagery. You need to use your mind and your emotions when viewing his films. It’s easy to forget a piece of narration or an image in his films. Often his films demand more than one viewing to get a full understanding of what he was trying to convey and even then, you may not get a full understanding.

To The Wonder is not Malick’s best work, maybe it’s because this was the shortest gap he has ever had between films, maybe he needed more time editing the film. The film received boos and cheers at the Venice Film Festival in 2012. I honestly find it hard to sit through his films. The theater I saw it at was showing it on 35mm. And from my projection days, I found myself counting reels. “Ok, one more reel to go,” I thought. Perhaps I’ve gotten tired of Malick’s style or maybe I just couldn’t engage in this story very well. Either way, the visual poem of To The Wonder is a hard one to grasp in just one viewing.

My expectations: I didn’t really have low or high expectations on this one. I expected the film to be a certain way and that’s what it ended up being.

Recommendation: I can only recommend this to Terrence Malick fans.

Re-watch Value: I would like to watch this film to analyze it more but probably pieces at a time though. My desire with this particular film is low.

Memorable: There is some memorable images in this film but the film itself won’t be memorable for me.

Mixing business and pleasure is a risky move. There’s something about when celebs turn the camera on to their personal lives that causes their careers and their relationships to fall apart. Here are a few celebs who might want to think about leaving their boo behind-the-scenes in the future.
JLoJLo had a pretty good buzz going as a singer even if her “hits” were only heard in the clubs, but as soon as Ben Affleck took JLo from the block to the yacht in her Jenny From the Block video, Jenny’s singing career went man down for a minute and she was left man-less and a little embarrassed. Not to mention Ben credited the cameo with almost ruining his career. And who can forget how clearly sprung she was on the track “Dear Ben,” in which she sings,” I love you, you’re perfect.” Well apparently, the feelings weren’t mutual; Ben quickly married another Jennifer after their break up and made like 11 kids with her. Sting. Word of advice for the former fly girl: You can sing all the love songs you want about your boo, just don’t name them after him and throw said boo in all your videos.

CiaraBefore Future, a rumored romance between Reggie Bush and Ciara lingered after she straddled him in the “Like A Boy” video. That couple was never confirmed, unlike the relationship that she and Bow Wow shared with appearances in the video “Like U” to prove it. And who can forget the fling between her and 50 Cent whose chemistry we all got to witness as she caressed his pecs in her video for “Can’t Leave ‘Em Alone.” Ciara is still the punch line for many of Curtis’s jokes, and did you see that awkward interaction the singer and Bow Wow recently shared on 106 & Park? No matter how much I’ve enjoyed her music, it seems to never get as much press as who she’s paired with. Cici, take notes from Beyoncé and let your love simmer for a bit before casting your man in your music videos. Otherwise your “future” with Future might not be looking too promising.Keyshia ColeWhen it comes to Keyshia’s relationship with ‘Boobie’, it seemed like she wanted love too bad and it happened too fast. In a blink of an eye, Keyshia had met Daniel “Boobie” Gibson, married him, had his baby (not in that order) and cast him in her video for “Long Way Down.” When celebs are too quick to undress and fondle each other on camera for the public, I instantly assume they are trying to convince us of their passion, because they don’t really believe it themselves, and for some reason, I really got that vibe from these two. As rumors flew of Boobie’s cheating and frustration with Keyshia’s attitude, “Keyshia and Daniel” premiered to really set the record straight, but only left me more convinced they were in over their heads. A word of advice: Work out your problems off camera before every fan clouds your judgment with their opinions.

RihannaIf you’re not familiar with her story, you need to give your two-months-notice to that rock you have been living up under. I’ve been debating whether the Rihanna/Chris Brown drama hurt or helped their careers, but the truth is, it probably did a little bit of both. This intense relationship gave the Good Girl Gone Bad more street cred and made her pop-locking boyfriend the man the media loves to hate. At the end of the day, they both ended up with more fans, more publicity and back together again. But their on-and-off-again affair is starting to leave bad taste in our mouths and many of us are wishing they’d do like they promised in “Nobody’s Business” and stop updating us every time they kiss and make up. I think at this point, we’d all prefer they keep releasing hits and not Instagram pics.

Mariah CareyMariah Carey found love on a video set when Nick Cannon was flown out to play the romantic lead in her video for “Bye Bye.” The couple has said it was love at first sight, but my only question is whose idea was it to cast the comedic Cannon as the love interest in the first place? He doesn’t exactly ooze sex appeal to me. Besides not understanding how Nick fit in with the concept of the video or song, I must admit, this pair has grown on me. Nick’s corniness balances out Mimi’s drama and brings her butterfly glamour back down to earth a bit. Most importantly, they both stay in their lane. You won’t catch Nick busting a weak rhyme on a Mariah track (though he might direct a video or two of hers); and she knows her man’s strengths and they don’t include rapping. Because of this, they both have found and maintained success independently and something tells me their union will outlast most.

Kanye WestKanye was once the king of rap to me, a little misunderstood, but still undeniably brilliant. But since linking up with the Kardashian clan, he’s just been a plain old weirdo whose acting like he’s snagged the Holy Grail since snatching up Ray J‘s leftovers. While he’s made a couple of awesome cameos here and there, we haven’t really gotten any hits and his whole career seems to be slowly overshadowed by his position as Kim K’s boyfriend. And must we hear in every song how he has the baddest b**ch by his side in all his new songs? It’s getting harder and harder for me to take him seriously. So yeah, I need Kanye to leave his boo behind-the-scenes, although of course I know she won’t stay there, eight months pregnant and all.

This 2012 period suspense film directed by Ben Affleck also stars Affleck in the main role of Tony M

This 2012 period suspense film directed by Ben Affleck also stars Affleck in the main role of Tony Mendez. This begins the first slap in the face from critics as many of them believed that Affleck, who is in no way of Mexican descent like the real-life Tony Mendez, had no business portraying this character. This along with the timing of the film’s release led many viewers to label it in poor taste towards the relations between Iran and America. While these may be valid points, what these critics and viewers fail to recognize is that THIS IS A MOVIE. It is a fictional story based on the true events of a part of the hostage crisis of 1979/80. There is really no way to get an unbiased opinion of these events. This film is written in part by Tony Mendez himself and so the liberties taken by the artists who produced and directed this film, the historical inaccuracies that every movie buff likes to site, and the controversial role that Affleck played cannot be that bad if the story was still given permission by Mendez. It would be easy for him to know that it would be changed for dramatic effect. That being said, don’t expect an extremely accurate portrayal of the covert CIA op that rescued hostages hiding out with the Canadian embassy during the hostage crisis. This is a theatrical production and should be considered such.

The film is shot on 35mm film and then the images were blown up to 200x to increase the graininess of the film. The footage of the riots in Iran, the students storming the CIA building, the television images, were all made to look like they were from the 1970s and it looks very good. The cars, clothes, mannerisms, and buildings look excellent. The effort made is obvious, even to those harping on every little inaccuracy that they try to find. As you can see, I believe that “Argo” got a bum rap. It was nominated for and won many awards but Affleck was snubbed out of an Oscar for best director and, from these nit-picky reviews, I believe that they felt his portrayal and direction was an ego trip. They look at the story and the message and the way it was portrayed and they think that it was over-hyped. They didn’t see exactly what they wanted to see and so they thrashed it in the reviews.

All in all, I liked this movie. It made me interested in the crisis enough to research what really happened (because I don’t take all of my information from films and expect it to be incredibly accurate) which was most likely one of the reasons why Mendez wrote part of this story in the first place. He wanted to be heard. The artistic liberties taken appear to have been necessary and, had they stuck to the original story, the film would have been pretty boring. Tony Mendez has a wife and child in the movie and his job puts a strain on both relationships. It is his son’s love of science fiction that seems to prompt Mendez to present the idea of using a fake movie as a way to get the hostages from the Canadian embassy. This part of the story is moving and humanizing as well as easy for the viewers to relate to. The focus is only on the situation at hand, not any of the other events going on in that time period. I recommend watching it, but remember that it’s only a movie and not historical footage shot on site in 1979. Stay tuned during the end credits, though because there IS some real archive photos from that time matched up to a few screen shots.

“You shall love.” – Olga Kurylenko as the fey and flighty Marina in Terrence Malick’s strangely speedy follow-up to Tree of Life.

It’s so incredibly easy to hate To the Wonder, Terrence Malick’s latest emotional epic about the agonies and ecstasies of love.

The suddenly prolific director’s follow-up to Tree of Life (2011) has a sweeping, grandiose visual scope, but its plot is microscopic.

Marina (Olga Kurylenko) and Neil (Ben Affleck) fall madly in love with each other, but after a holiday to Mont St-Michel, their return to Neil’s native Oklahoma signals a shift in their relationship, and things begin to go awry.

Meanwhile, a priest in the local parish, Father Quintana (Javier Bardem) – to whom Marina occasionally confesses – is straining to feel the power of God, and begins to doubt whether he could ever regain the same visceral spiritual connection that his vocation appears to promise.

Save for Marina yo-yoing back and forth to America (her daughter from a previous relationship in tow) and Neil reconnecting with an old flame, Jane (Rachel McAdams), that’s it.

This isn’t a film of plot or character development. It isn’t a film of twists and resolutions. Perhaps it would be best to describe its progression as being made up of musical ‘movements’ (and in fact, Malick, as ever, weaves his swooping shots in perfectly with the film’s orchestral soundtrack).

Which is why it’s easy to hate. Ironic, given that its chief motor is – cliché as it may sound when not delivered through an instrument of such polished, aching beauty as Malick’s film language – the power of love: how it weaves in and out of our lives and shapes our thoughts and decisions, and how powerless we are to make it work in our favour when things go wrong. It’s also notably free of any irony at all. Malick aims high – though perhaps not as high as the philosophically sprawling Tree of Life – and makes no apologies for it. Through the character of Bardem’s wavering priest, he extends his exploration of love into the love of the divine essence. From Badlands (his 1973 debut) onwards, Malick always displayed an obsession with classically ‘Romantic’ themes: man’s relationship to the natural world being one of them. Tree of Life extended this further to a clearly Christian trajectory.

Paring down some of that film’s excesses – there is nothing akin to that 20-minute ‘prehistoric’ sequence, which is probably for the best – Malick still manages to furnish the film with a seemingly effortless grandiosity.

Being a film about love, it also appears to know that beauty and seduction are essential ingredients of that brew.

And this tender and elusive filmmaker – he has been refusing interviews since the beginning of his career – opens To the Wonder with something of a swagger, a bravura challenge to himself, by letting us in through the viewpoint of Marina’s camera phone, as she takes in the scenery from a fast-moving train. Yet, nothing about the sequence feels tawdry or rushed.

Instead, Marina’s hushed voice appears – not to dump information or backstory, but to hint, to suggest: to help us build a picture of her relationship with both Neil and with the phenomenon of love in our minds, as the beautiful spool of pictures rolls by – Malick employing his deft cinematographic hand, as aided by Emmanuel Lubezki, to show us just how wonderful the world could be if we deigned to stop and take it in as we should.

To many, this might seem just like a more or less random collage of postcard images of France and America, strung together by beautiful music and beautiful actors dancing and weaving around – basically, a glorified perfume advert. An accusation often levelled at Malick is that he coasts on his ability to craft beautiful images without working hard enough to supply a riveting story and relatable characters. But to berate him for this would be to miss the point.

By cutting out the flab that comes with any form of narrative, Malick is all the better equipped to transport us. He doesn’t tell you that love is a powerful, tricky thing – and that spiritual love is the most elusive thing of all. If you’re receptive to him, he will show you.

Here is what I have watched (or attempted to watch) on Netflix.ca this past week or so. Listed in the order of my favourite to least favourite.

Lip Service (2010-2012)

“Lives, loves & lusts of Lipstick Lesbians in Scotland.” Need I say more? I shouldn’t have to but I will.

Sure there is some terrible writing/acting involved in this show but I just tell myself it is a Scottish thing and continue to love the fuck out of it. If you are in your 20s and enjoy Lesbians with accents you will probably love this show too. There are definitely some relatable and interesting characters in this one, characters who deal with some realistic, yet dramatic enough for tv, lesbian-life-conundrums.

Shit gets fucking real in the second season, which is unfortunately the last. Perhaps it is for the best though as I watched so much of it this weekend, I started to talk with a Glasgow accent, which is hard to explain to my roommate … who is a cat …

Sigh. I feel lost now that I’ve watched every episode. Like, what am I going to do with my time? … I guess I will have to do something productive. Which sucks.

Joe + Belle (2011)

I don’t think everyone reading this will love this film but there is something I really dig about it. Maybe it is mostly that it is about two women falling in love over a dead body but there is something else beautiful about it that I can’t quite put my writing fingers on. The lead looks like a slightly dyke-ier version of Kristen Stewart which tripped me out a bit, the mental state of the other lead character is also intriguing. I think my favourite things about this film are the Israeli radio broadcasts repeatedly heard throughout it and the tagline, “If love is not madness … it is not love.”

I recommend you get turbo high to the point where you are borderline drooling, watch this film, look for the deeper meaning in everything and do it in that order.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2raIS9yv4k

What’s Your Number?

The epitome of a chick-flick with a plot written by a five-year-old but it does provide some laughs and the comfort of complete and utter predictability. I wouldn’t go back in time and not watch it but I would go back in time and not date all the random dudes on my ex-list that make me resent the shit out of this whole topic.

Forces of Nature (1999)

I ate a tub of Haagen-Dazs while I watched this one, halfway through I realized all of the above may be a warning sign of depression. Sigh.

I highly recommend this film if your brain is barely functioning and you need something to watch on Netflix that doesn’t have a single sex scene in it. So maybe if you are babysitting a preteen or something, this would be perfect.

Wood Allen: A Documentary (2012)

I fucking love Woody Allen films but I couldn’t make it through this documentary. I would recommend attempting to watch it if you love Woody Allen though. Maybe it was all the kush I smoked but halfway through I felt like I was listening to someone’s grandpa telling the same story over and over again. I love grandpas but I’d rather listen to my own tell stories. Plus the fact that Woody Allen got a writing gig when he was like 17 was just terrible fucking depressing to a failed writer like myself.

Toke it easy,

2. Venezuela brushed off criticism from President Obama on Sunday and maintained its accusation that an American detainee is a spy pretending to be a filmmaker. Oh, please let it be Ben Affleck.

3. U.S. regulators have approved a machine that sedates patients during colonoscopies without the need for a physician to monitor delivery of a sedating agent. Even more impressive, once patients are out, the machine is programmed to talk to other machines about how gross they look naked.

4. Yesterday was Cinco de Mayo, one day where everyone, regardless of their heritage, comes together to drink themselves stupid. But today, it’s back to business as normal, wanting those people out of our country.

5. Over the weekend, Orb beat out a field of eighteen other horses to win the Kentucky Derby. But don’t feel bad for the other seventeen horses, they will continue to have careers in athletics, most likely baseball.

6. Harvard historian Niall Ferguson issued an apology after saying that British economist John Maynard Keynes did not care about the future because he was gay and had no children. Which is stupid, because you don’t have to be gay to not care about our future, right Dick Cheney?

7. Harvard historian Niall Ferguson issued an apology after saying that British economist John Maynard Keynes did not care about the future because he was gay and had no children. Not since the paparazzi and Princess Diana have I seen such a high-profile apology to a dead queen.

8. Harvard historian Niall Ferguson issued an apology after saying that British economist John Maynard Keynes did not care about the future because he was gay and had no children. Which makes no sense, because if gay people don’t care about the future, then who’s buying all these Priuses?

9. Harvard historian Niall Ferguson issued an apology after saying that British economist John Maynard Keynes did not care about the future because he was gay and had no children. Although, I get the sense, Octomom didn’t think about the future much either.

10. An Iowa man ended a dog attack on his spouse by biting the dog that was biting his wife. Which begs the question, what would he have done to the dog if he found it humping his wife’s leg?
