Hannah Teter has become the first athelete to be honored with their own Ben & Jerry’s Ice

Hannah Teter has become the first athelete to be honored with their own Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream flavor. This winter, Ben & Jerry’s takes to the mountain to honor fellow Vermont native and gold-medalist snowboarder, Hannah Teter with its newest flavor, Maple Blondie. Maple Blondie is a rich and creamy maple ice cream with blonde brownie pieces and a smooth maple caramel swirl that will be arriving in Scoop Shops nationwide later this month. Channeling the company’s commitment to social mission, a portion of the proceeds will benefit Hannah’s Gold, Teter’s own charity that funds various projects in Africa.

“I’m so amped to have my very own Ben & Jerry’s flavor,” said Hannah. “It’s great to have support from my home state, and a cool way to further support Hannah’s Gold and all the work we’re doing in Kirindon, Kenya.”

“We couldn’t think of a better athlete or humanitarian to honor with a flavor this year,” said Walt Freese, Chief Euphoria Officer of Ben & Jerry’s. “Hannah’s not only a Vermont star, but making a big impact on countless people in Kirindon that desperately need humanitarian help. We’ll be cheering her on as she competes this winter and as she continues her important work in Africa.”

In conjunction with the flavor, Ben & Jerry’s are hosting the ultimate “Vermont Snowboard Getaway” sweepstakes. One grand prize winner will win a four day, three night trip for two to Vermont to attend the Burton US Open Snowboarding Championships and head-to-toe Burton snowboarding gear, as well as lift tickets and snowboarding lessons on Stratton Mountain. Ten first-prize winners will each receive a Burton Flight Deck travel bag, sleeper hoodie and tour kit. From December 1 to January 30, consumers can enter via http://www.benjerry.com/, by texting “HANNAH” to 30241, or by mail.

Maple Blondie will be available in Scoop Shops nationwide starting late November and in pints on grocery store shelves mid-December.
Most of the time when I want ice cream, I go out and buy a single scoop in a cone or a dish, or a sundae. I try to avoid having ice cream in my freezer at home because I’ll eat it. Constantly. I broke down the other day, though, and bought a pint of Ben & Jerry’s. I was really craving ice cream, but it was cold outside and I didn’t want to go far.

I stood in front of the massive freezer at the local convenience store, contemplating the pro’s and con’s of Cherry Garcia vs. Phish Food vs. Americone Dream. Did I want chocolatey or carmel goodness, or sweet cherry flavors. Such hard a hard decision. I even thought about getting frozen yogurt. Finally, I decided on “Everything but the…” because it’s packed with so many different toppings, and it’s one of the few flavors I’d never tried before.

The description on the package reads, “A collision of Chocolate & Vanilla ice cream mixed with Heath Bar Crunch, White Chocolate Chunks, Peanut Butter Cups & and Chocolate Covered Almonds.” “Sounds pretty good to me,” I thought. I paid my $6.00, my addiction getting the best of me once again, and I left the store.

I got home, started digging into the frozen heaven, and within minutes I was hooked. There were just so many flavors in every bite. The only downside was that the peanut butter cups are huge, frozen, and hard to bite into. Ben & Jerry’s should crush them up a little more before putting them into the ice cream so they’re not so hard to eat, when you’re shoveling scoop after scoop into your mouth.

About halfway through the pint, I decided to turn it over and look at the nutrition facts. I gasped and thought, “Oh my god, I’ve already eaten over 600 calories and almost 40 grams of fat.” I slowly removed my spoon and grudgingly placed my pint into the freezer. Why does something so good have to be so bad for you?

Next time I get Ben & Jerry’s I’ll have to stick to going to one of their “scoop shops.” The closest ones to me are in the Prudential Center or on Newbury Street. There, I’ll be able to do a little better with portion control.

One of the great things about getting older, is that you realise that you don’t have to compromise in the field of relationships. One has the confidence to say things like “I deserve better than this”, “It is reasonable to expect good manners”, “I am not feeling happy therefore I withdraw”, I am with you because I want you rather than because I need you” and other personally empowering things.

Last week, Michelle Obama was in the news saying that she thought that young women sometimes chose men for the wrong reasons. Despite frantic Googling, I have not managed to find the exact quotes, but if memory serves, she said something along the lines of:

Don’t chose a man for his looks or his money

Choose a man with intelligence and a desire to succeed

Look at how he treats his mother

I’m with her all the way on this although I would naturally extend the criteria to women as well. I would go further:-

Ask yourself “Do I like who I am when I am with this person?”

Incredibly good looking people almost always know it

Do they like your friends?

Do they introduce you to their friends?

Choose someone IN their potential, not WITH potential (c.Lady Somerset)

Does this person treat you with courtesy and good manners?

Do they make an effort with their appearance when they go out with you?

Do they fit in with your family?

(For older people) are they at ease with your children?

Are they interested in what you do and who you are?

Are your values and ethics compatible?

Do they like you for who you are now, not what they want you to be?

Do you want a project or a relationship?

Never, EVER mess with someone who doesn’t know what they want. You will never succeed

Love is not enough on its own

Relationships are potentially much more complicated as we get older, because there are so many more variables. When we are 20, everyone is on the prowl, everyone is playing the same game. When we are out there second or third time round, it is not just us with whom they have be compatible. They have to get on with your children, your family, your long established friends and probably even your ex (or indeed ex-es).

I have stayed friends with quite a few of my ex’s, because I firmly believe that just because you don’t want to carry on a ‘relationship’ with them, it doesn’t mean you have to lose all the positive aspects of a friendship that has simply changed dynamic. Also, if you have children, it is really important to demonstrate to them that grown-ups can be civilised and that break-ups don’t necessarily equate to break-downs. Obviously this can’t always happen; it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try.

I once asked Lady Marjorie to what she attributed the success of her sixty year marriage. After much thought she came up with this: tolerance, flexibility, starting with nothing and building something together, mutual goals and a sense of humour. Can’t argue with that.

I am clearly an expert on relationships. Despite more boyfriends than I care to mention (admittedly over a thirty year period), and a twelve year relationship, at 44 I am a single mother of two children, starting all over again. However, having rigidly applied my own rules to my recent relationship of ten months, I have just presented my Former Favourite with his P45, and I only spent one day eating Ben & Jerry’s straight from the tub.

I remain obnoxiously cheerful.

PS. If they’re rubbish in bed and refuse to improve, I leave it to your discretion, but make sure they have some seriously compensating qualities.

The public lecture is billed as
Doing well by doing good – a seminar about sustainable and community friendly business practices.

Here’s the blurb:

Back in 1978, close friends Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, armed with a $5 correspondence course in ice cream making, opened their first Scoop Shop in a dilapidated gas station in Burlington, Vermont. Whilst they occasionally disagreed on the size of the chunks going into the ice cream, one thing they did agree on was having fun. As Jerry put it, “ if it’s not fun, why do it?”. They also decided from the start that business has a responsibility to give back to the community in which it operates, a philosophy that is still important to the business today. 30 years on, with a continued focus on sourcing the finest ingredients to create euphoric chunks & swirls, Ben & Jerry’s now operates in over 30 countries, spreading joy for the belly and soul across the globe with a mission to make the best possible ice cream in the nicest possible way, using business as a tool for social and environmental change.

The seminar is open to the public and on 25 November, 12 – 1pm, Level 5, The Spot (198 Berkeley St, Parkville, Victoria).

I’ll be there to report back for all of you blog readers.

This year’s Dancer Recruitment Week, Nov. 9-13, was proof of the dedication of students at the Unive

This year’s Dancer Recruitment Week, Nov. 9-13, was proof of the dedication of students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to the patients and families at N.C. Children’s Hospital. Registration closed Friday, Nov. 13, with 1,600 dancers committed to taking a 24-hour stand For the Kids at the marathon in February.

Throughout the week, the presence of UNC Dance Marathon was evident throughout the UNC-CH campus. Despite the seemingly incessant rain that challenged committee members to come up with recruitment efforts slightly different from the usual craziness of music and dancing in the middle of the Pit, students were still eager to register and commit not only to standing for 24 hours, but also to raising the a minimum fundraising total of $150.

Members of every committee put in incomparable energy and countless hours of preparation to make Dancer Recruitment Week such a success. “All of the committee members were so influential in this accomplishment,” said Morale Chair Leigh Rolandelli. “Morale visited many different places on campus in order to recruit a wide variety of students. We visited the dorms, danced at the gyms, paraded through the quad, recruited in the dining halls and danced in the Pit.”

Fliers were posted in classrooms and dorms across campus the week before the official Dancer Recruitment Week to get the word out early and to encourage potential dancers to start thinking about the commitment of registering to dance. Throughout Dancer Recruitment Week, small additions — from Ben & Jerry’s ice cream in the Pit to the all-committee tie dye extravaganza Tuesday afternoon to the legendary grape costume and other unusual clothing donned by members of the Morale Committee — made the excitement even more intense.

Though this year was still filled with the usual excitement of Dancer Recruitment Week, a special effort was put forth to emphasize the commitment that is made when dancers register for the marathon. “We had lots of games, costumes, music and ice cream in the Pit, but we were also able to communicate the purpose of UNC Dance Marathon to a lot of students,” Rolandelli said.

And what compels dancers to make such a commitment? “I heard Dance Marathon is a great way to raise money, give back to the community and have fun,” said Jordan Baskett, a first-year student who registered to dance last week. “I signed up to dance because I wanted to contribute my time and energy to a wonderful cause, as well as to get the experience of standing on my feet for 24 hours! I want to be a part of making someone’s life better.”

The week concluded with the Battle of the Bands competition Friday night at Players where dancers and other supporters of UNC Dance Marathon selected the band that will perform at the marathon.

“I am so thrilled that there are so many students taking a stand For the Kids.” said Taylor Scott, the Overall Coordinator for UNC Dance Marathon. “Dancer Recruitment Week was an amazing testament to the commitment of all the committee members who have been working so hard since September to support the patients and families of N.C. Children’s Hospital. It was an incredible demonstration of students coming together to unite under one cause. I am so excited to be moving forward to the marathon with so many eager and excited dancers, new and returning.”

I’ve just gotten home from a sleepover at one of my best friends. Yesterday we met up early and went to Copenhagen by train, to do some shopping. We didn’t really buy that much, just some dvd’s and such. I only bought 3 pairs of earrings for 45 kr. (9 dollars), since I’m gonna try to save some of my money for next year. We went to some kind of Japanese-looking restaurant for lunch, but it was pretty expensive, so I just bought a soda and snacked from the others XD .. but they didn’t really like their food, so no, I was not scrouning u_u;

Anyway, after that we went to some more shops, before heading home by train. When we got out in Hillerød to change train, we had to wait for half an hour, and in the mean time, Helene bought one of these small balls that you can buy in the automates for 20 kr. (4 dollars). It was from Mario I think, and she instantly named it “Prut-Sky”, which becomes “Fart-Sky” when translated to English. When we got home, we bought some ice cream and then went to style our hair and put make-up on each other. Anette made me a really cool hairstyle which I’ll try making tomorrow, if I have the time. We ate at the local pizzeria, where Gitte joined us, and after that we went home and watched the movie “13 soon 30″ with delicious Ben & Jerry’s ice cream!

Actually it was held as a late birthday party for Anette, but it became more of a sleepover since we hadn’t gotten her gift ready in time ^^” And I took lots and lots of pictures because I pretended to be a tourist in Copenhagen XD I just recently got home today ;3

Btw, I know I promised to tell you about the Crazy Christmas Caberet last Wednesday, but it’s many days ago now. But basically it’s a yearly English Christmas event in that’s played in the theater in Tivoli every year. Most of my class didn’t understand, simply because most of them suck at English, but I think it was incredible humorous! If I had been home in Denmark next Christmas, I would’ve definitely went to see it again!

By the way, I just realized that this was my first real post with photos in it. Looks nice, huh? Well, I’ll try to have some photos for future posts ^^

Via JMG. In honor of same-sex marriages beginning today in Vermont, ice cream makers Ben & Jerry have temporarilyrenamed one of their most popular flavors.

“The legalization of marriage for gay and lesbian couples in Vermont is certainly a step in the right direction, and something worth celebrating with peace, love – and plenty of ice cream,” Ben & Jerry’s CEO Walt Freese said in announcing the sugary switch. Ben & Jerry’s, which has long backed liberal causes, plans to rebrand “Chubby Hubby” as “Hubby Hubby” for 30 days to show support for Vermont’s new law. The move is mostly symbolic, as Burlington-based Ben & Jerry’s isn’t changing labels on “Chubby Hubby” pints sold in stores.

Free Hubby Hubby will be handed out by Ben & Jerry’s trucks “across Vermont” today. Too bad they won’t be shipped to retail, that’s a real collectors’ item right there.

I caught this posting on Marketing Profs, and thought really relevant and well written. So much so,

I caught this posting on Marketing Profs, and thought really relevant and well written. So much so, that I’m going to take the lazy route, and simply repost it here for your reading pleasure.

Good news: You don’t have to lose sight of your brand’s tried-and-true persona to participate in the quest for deeper engagement at the new social sites. Just think of the social-media generation as a silver-dish serving of people who already want to talk to you; you just need to make them feel comfortable doing it. Easier said than done? Not necessarily. Here are a couple of older brands that are getting it right:

Sharpie, well past pushin’ 40, managed to tap into an enthusiastic user culture in a way we’re pretty sure no other pen brand has. Its Sharpie Uncapped gallery enables fans far and wide to express, in vivid (and permanent!) color, how they incorporate the inky wonders into their creative undertakings.

Think about the number of years kids have been using Sharpies to scribble on jeans, decorate casts and prettify their Converse tennies. Now there’s a fun place to show all that off? Score!

Little Debbie, who first made the scene in the 1960s, is using flickr, Twitter, Facebook and blog outreach to promote a cupcake Share-a-Thon this fall. A series of Smart cars demonstrate Little Debbie’s commitment to the eco-cause, and are also outfitted like the cupcakes themselves. Thus far, the aging mark has done a tasty job of reminding fresh generations of its relevance.

Now, not all instances of successful social-media outreach are even intentional. Case in point: When gay couples were finally permitted to wed in Vermont, 31-year-old ice cream brand Ben & Jerry’s celebrated by renaming its Chubby Hubby ice cream Hubby Hubby within the state. Thousands of blog posts and twitter updates later, they realized they had a winner.

How’d these old-timers manage to wow a fresh-faced crowd? At ad:tech Chicago this year, reps from Ben & Jerry’s and Sharpie said they felt social media was just in their DNA. That is to say, the key to winning hearts hasn’t changed with time or tech: It’s still about communicating a message in a relatable way.

What are your thoughts on this? Is social media quickly becoming an integral strategy for these and other brands in the market? What kind of social media integration have you experienced that you think is a good use of the media?

Shelley’s aunt, my soon-t0-be aunt, Jane K., forwarded a link to a story 0stensibly about brands who no longer make their products in the USA. It was an inappropriate title (thanks, MSN Money) but interesting nonetheless. I haven’t worried too much about who owns the companies that make the MITUSA stuff I buy. I’m focused on country of origin: where was this item made. Not who owns it, and where they’re based, and to what country the money I spend gets shipped to. But that’s an interesting question to consider. Does a brand’s locale affect its MITUSA-ness? And that’s sorta what this story is about.

You can consider this question (not that I think there’s necessarily a correct answer) while you read the story. Maybe you’ll be surprised, as I was, to learn that Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is no longer owned by Ben or Jerry. And that Trader Joe’s, the unique boutique grocery store chain, is actually German-owned. Owned by the same German who, coincidentally, made his fortune in the Aldi grocery store chain.

It seems to me that if you focused on buying from American companies who make their products overseas, not only would you have an easier go of it, but you wouldn’t be doing nearly as much good. If I’m doing any good at all, that is.

This is Ben & Jerry’s.
Without doubt the greatest thing ever to have been produced by the East Coast of the US…
Except maybe this guy.

Bode aside, I first encountered Benjamin on the shelves of the City Market in Avon, during my first Northern Hemisphere training camp in Colorado.

The flavour was Karamel Sutra and I was hooked forever.

This was way back in December 2006, I was the baby of the team at just 15.
Today I remain the baby of the team, allbeit a significantly bigger baby.

Since that moment I have savoured my days on North American soil, not for the chest-beating patriots, but for the Ben & Jerry’s.
And the chicken wings.

Discreetly, unadvertised and unheralded, Ben & Jerry’s began to creep onto Australian shores earlier this month. A selected six ‘flavourites’ have begun the charge Down Under for Vermont’s finest with a perfectly timed delivery to disrupt my feeble focus on my final exams.

Now if somebody could only provide quality wings in Australia, my life would be complete.

In my mind, Breyer’s mint chocolate chip is neck and neck with Ben & Jerry’s mint chocolate chunk. It really depends how big you like your chocolate chips. BTW, I just found out the Breyer’s has 1/3 fewer calories without compromising on flavor: http://bit.ly/Jvy0K.

Anyway, this yogurt is as close as you’re gonna get to the ice cream. It tastes like the ice cream with some added tartness. Also, I wish the chocolate chips weren’t so soft. But I definitely will buy again. I just hope it’s not really limited edition, as marked on the package.

only problem…rain, rain and more rain…all day long. bleh.

don’t worry….we made the most of it. we started off with a scenic drive on route 100, which according to yankee magazine has the best foliage viewing in all of new england. they weren’t kidding…it was sooo gorgeous. we drove along the green mountain forest, passed the cutest little towns, quaint farms, and a waterfall! there was one bend in the road with holsteins grazing on the countryside with a backdrop of the green mountains and it looked like we just stepped into one of those “happy cow” commercials- except in this case, happy cows come from vermont.

i wish i had pictures…not that my amateur photog skills would have done the views justice…but it was just too wet and gross to stop and take pictures. oh well, i took mental pics for myself

after our leisurely three hour drive north, we arrived in waterbury- home to the ben & jerry’s ice cream factory! woohoo!

yummy ice cream that-a-way!

the factory doesn’t run on weekends but we paid our admission fee and got to see the machines and a short film on ben & jerry. i was surprised to see how small the factory is. the best part of the tour was the flavor room…

sample time!

the flavor of the day was mint chocolate chunk!

you only get a tiny scoop of the flavor of the day though. boo!

dream job=

after the tour, we visited the flavor graveyard…

where retired flavors are laid to rest.

i was saddest to see “miz jelena’s sweet potato pie”

one potato, two potato,

all in all, it was a fun stop…probably better on weekdays when the factory is running but when is anything to do with ice cream ever bad?

what’s your favorite ben & jerry’s flavor?

You say puh-jam-ah, I say puh-jom-ah

Actually, I say it the first way, but that’s not important.

Ladies and gentlemen, dear blog readers, I had the most fantastic Saturday. You see, with the exception of camping, John and I have never allowed Béni to share a bed with us. However, we do enjoy cuddling with our sweet puppy and have been wanting some more Béni cuddle time. Since I still did not want to start the habit of allowing Béni into our bed, we decided to have a slumber party with our dog on Saturday night.

Being the wimpy old farts that we are, we moved the top mattress from our bed into the living room as our “sleeping bag.” We got super comfy and watched Anchorman while eating the most fantastic flavor of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream: Chunky Monkey. According to the Ben & Jerry’s website, Chunky Monkey is banana ice cream with fudge chunks and walnuts. Banana ice cream? If you’re like us, you’re thinking “blech, that doesn’t sound too good.” However, if Chunky Monkey and Phish Food are the only two flavors left in the store on the night of your family pajama party, you’ll buy one of each just for the heck of it. I’m so glad we got it. Confession: we bought a second pint when we went to the grocery store last night. It’s that good. It’s kind of like when I tried a Take 5 candy bar for the first time a couple weeks ago, which has left me wondering “how have I been missing this in my life?”

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Phish Food flavor, it, too, is fantastic. Ben & Jerry’s describes it as chocolate ice cream with gooey marshmallow, caramel swirls and fudge fish. I think of it like Rocky Road but better.

So, where was I? Oh yeah, ice cream and Anchorman. We also gave Béni some “ice cream.” The store has these froze ice cream-like dog treats. We have only given one to Béni once before (a month or so ago), and since Saturday was a big treat night, he got another.

After Anchorman ended, we watched Hairspray (I’m a sucker for musicals) and had some popcorn and German beer.

(I did not in any way say this night was healthy!)

We wrapped up the night with an episode of 30 Rock.

It took Béni some getting used to in order to realize it was ok for him to stay on the bed with us. He was super sweet all night and rotated between lying between John and me and lying at our feet. So sweet!

So, that was my fabulous Saturday. I know it’s Tuesday now, and it’s a bit late to ask about how your weekend was, but I still want to know. How was your weekend?

My reason now is an organization, TrueMajority, that advocates greater investment in programs to reduce poverty, particularly Head Start and efforts to feed children living in poverty. TrueMajority was founded by Ben Cohen, also a co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s. For those who support Head Start, you might want to check out an animated video of him in which he uses stacks of Oreo cookies to compare U.S. military spending with spending for Head Start and other programs to help families move out of poverty: http://www.truemajority.org/oreos

My official time was 55:28. I placed fourth in my AG, missing third place by six seconds. Nerts!

A picture if you please. See if you can spot the RoadID and Sports Beans!

…

Tonight I made this recipe for the first time (I added fresh spinach and used chicken broth instead of veggie broth) and it was delicious, especially with half of a toasted and lightly buttered sprouted grain english muffin for dipping. YUM.

Recipe and image from 101 Cookbooks: http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/red-lentil-soup-recipe.html

…

Has anyone else tried Ben & Jerry’s Oatmeal Cookie Chunk ice cream? Holy crap. I am a true chocolate lover at heart and definitely not a big ice cream person but I make an exception for this one. It is cinnamon ice cream with chunks of oatmeal cookie and dark chocolate and it is fantastically addictive.
