Since this college semester is coming to a close in a few weeks, I’ve decided to post my current Top 10 films list for a two part blog, giving reasons and a video showing a clip from each film.  Now, I won’t go and call myself the best film critic by any stretch of word and there are still plenty of movies I have yet to see.  But I figure there’s no harm in constantly updating your list and for a good while, this has been what the top has looked like.  So here it is, part one:

10. Forrest Gump

This is definitely a clear contender for a most popular film list; and with good reason.  Many scenes, characters and lines have been mentioned, quoted and spoofed countless times, but this is all the more reason it’s such a great movie.  Sure, we’ve all seen it only a billion and a half times already, but it never loses its charm.  Although Forrest might not be the brightest apple on the tree, he’s one of the most naturally good at-heart.  A big part of what makes this such an easy film to follow is how Forrest’s adventures and, at times, struggles are a fair representation of what many common Americans go through.  The film has recently been criticized for having a constrained view on some of these moments but this is more a misconception than anything.  What Forrest deals with and notices are intended to be passed off from his view, which is as neutral and unbiased as you can possibly get.  Some might think the film struggles with its message(s), which it doesn’t but this is only more reason the film relates so easily to us (multiple messages and some not being so clear at first).

“You’re gonna have to figure that out yourself.  Life is a box of chocolates, Forrest.  You never know what you’re gonna get.”

9. Stand By Me

I’ve become a fairly big fan of Stephen King in the past couple years.  I feel that he’s (mostly) offered some of the best stories out there, whether they detail strong characters or have striking scenarios, he’s almost never left me underwhelmed.  And despite how much I might praise his other works; I think the story that hits home the most for me is the film adaptation of Stand By Me.  The plot is very basic and gives us little more than the little journey that our four main characters go through.  But this simplicity gives the film a lot of room to detail the characters and we definitely get a strong dose of that, namely from Gordie and Chris.  The relationship between all four characters feels natural and realistic, with great agreements and sometimes bitter arguments sprouting out.  Anyone who’s seen the film unedited knows that it doesn’t try to sugarcoat anything but you’re not getting morbid or depressing images either.  It’s a kind of film that can easily to speak to anyone because of it cleverly maintaining a mid-ground mood.

“Bull****”

“Bull true.  I know how your dad feels about you.  He doesn’t give a **** about you, Denny was the one he cared about and don’t try to tell me different.  You’re just a kid, Gordie.”

“Oh, gee!  Thanks, Dad!”

“Wish the hell I was your Dad.  You wouldn’t be goin’ around talkin’ about takin’ these stupid shop courses if I was.  It’s like God gave you something, man, all those stories you can make up.  And He said, ‘This is what I got for ya, kid.  Try not to lose it.’  Kids lose everything unless there’s someone there to look out for them.  And if your parents are too ****ed up to do it, then maybe I should.”

8. Letters from Iwo Jima

This might sound blasphemous to some, but I’m pretty late to the Clint Eastwood party.  In fact, this and Flags of Our Fathers were my introduction to his work.  But as we all know Mr. Eastwood has seldom missed the mark and he definitely did a great job with Flags of Our Fathers.  Then there’s Letters from Iwo Jima, which trumps its American sibling in every conceivable way.  Despite telling the tale from the Japanese point of view, this film actually hits home harder than Flags of Our Fathers.  Giving us an idea of what the conditions were (probably) like for the Japanese soldiers who worked, fought and died on Iwo Jima is one of the film’s strongest aspects.  And it’s carried out throughout the entire runtime with pure excellence, giving us strong performances from the entire cast (especially Ken Watanabe) and dramatic moments matched by a solemnly peaceful score.  War has taken many forms and become the inspiration for a wide variety of films-this is one that gets my utmost recommendation for even the remotely curious.

7. The War

Don’t be confused, this isn’t that forgettable film featuring Jason Statham and Jet Li.  Instead, this is a picture from 1994 staring Kevin Costner and a young Elijah Wood playing part of a dirt poor family in 1970.  I will say I’m definitely biased towards this film mostly because it hasn’t gotten much recognition and has thus become more of a cult favorite.  The synopsis doesn’t sound terribly interesting on paper and the happy-happy-joy-joy DVD cover indicates a very bland film.  However, this is a movie that, like most of the films on my Top 10 list, hit close to him simply for its characters.  The relationships are mostly believable and the acting is solid all around.  This leads to a real shame about the film: only two (three if you count Lucas Black) of the actors made it.  Many of the supporting characters were filled by people who looked like they had plenty of potential yet only Wood and Costner hit it big.  A number of messages are told throughout the film and although they aren’t emphasized quite to the extent of, say, Forrest Gump, it helps keep the film from feeling like it’s preaching.  I’m sure most who are reading this haven’t seen the film and likely won’t find it at their local video store.  But I highly urge even buying it since it can very easily grow on you and a number of scenes contribute to give it plenty of re-watch value.

6. Schindler’s List

Of all the films on my Top 10 list, this is the one that I can never bring myself to watching multiple times.  I’ve only seen the movie one time, but that single viewing alone leaves such a mark on you that it’s almost impossible to forget the details.  This is a very different film for Spielberg which turns out to be a wonderful shift and only makes me wonder why he hasn’t done more dramas.  On the flip side, part of what helps Schindler’s List work so well is that we haven’t gotten very many films that even come close to hitting the serious mark it has.  Those who haven’t seen it should be aware that this is a very unapologetic viewing which, given the subject matter, is very important.  What’s best is that we get this inspired tale of a single setting in the Holocaust and it never loses the tight grip in the three hour runtime.  Schindler’s List very clearly deserved its Best Picture win at the Oscars for a number of reasons, including how unrelenting, convincing and absorbing it is.

“If I’d made more money…I threw away so much money.  You have no idea.  If I’d just…”

“This car.  Goeth would have bought this car.  Why did I keep the car?  Ten people right there.  Ten people.  Ten more people.”

“This pin.  Two people.  This is gold.  Two more people.  He would have given me two for it, at least one.  One more person.  A person, Stern.  For this.  I could have got one more person…and I didn’t!  And I…I didn’t!”

Alternando su reciente faceta de documentalista con la de productor de cine y realizador de TV, el maestro del costumbrismo contémporaneo, el futuro ganador del Cecil B. DeMille en los próximos Golden Globes, el gran Martin Scorsese, se prepara para una grata sorpresa. Y la sorpresa es su regreso al género del terror y el suspenso.

Para los que no recuerden Cape Fear y su magnífico DeNiro, Martin Scorsese en 1991 adaptó la novela de John D. MacDonald y junto a él, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange y la jovencita Juliette Lewis armaron lo que para mi es un claro ejemplo de suspenso donde el cruento enfrentamiento entre DeNiro y su abogado defensor, Nolte, nos dejó petrificados en nuestras sillas. Para ese entonces Juliette Lewis caracterizaba a una jovencita casi de la misma edad mía; en ese entonces no concebía muy bien la diferencia de edades y pues me parecía un acto de seducción medianamente normal. Vista uno o dos veces después, el acto pedófilo se hizo más evidente y alimentó mi morbo en esta peli en particular. No hay cabida para ser tan macabro como lo fue DeNiro y tan genialmente malvado como Scorsese para lograr esta factura. La maldición de Scorsese, y de paso la de DeNiro, era la de arrasar en nominaciones y no ganar absolutamente nada (una gran injusticia con este par de monstruos), esta no fue la excepción. Qué buen guión, qué buena factura, qué actuaciones, etc… Y nada. Al final la revelación de Lewis y su virginal papel, le conllevaron dos premios y una nominación a nivel independiente.

Scorsese se prepara para un nuevo atardecer, de la mano de un reparto sencillamente impresionante, de Robert Richardson veterano de mil batallas en cinematografía al lado de Oliver Stone, el mismo Scorsese y recientemente visto en los basterdos de Tarantino, y de Thelma Shoonmaker editora que no sólo es una ganadora impresionante de óscares sino casi la mano derecha de Scorsese en todo su portafolio de largometrajes.

Apunta a ser escalofriante, impresionante, tenebrosa, ojalá muy gore y de una factura impecable. Que se lleve sus buenos premios y que Scorsese como es caballero repita Oscar como es debido.

Stefan Teplan: Sie haben den Ruf, sich wie kein anderer Schauspieler in Ihre Rollen einzuleben und sich damit zu identifizieren. Wie ist es Ihnen da mit Moses gegangen?

Ben Kingsley: Das ist eine der bekanntesten Fehleinschätzungen überhaupt. Ich kann Ihnen das auch nachsehen. Aber die Schauspielerei ist etwas, was ich tue, um mein Geld zu verdienen, um meine vier Kinder und meine Frau zu ernähren – mehr ist es nicht. Dass ich mich in einen Rolle versetzen muss, ist eine reine Vorgabe. Ich stelle einfach etwas dar. Das ist ein Handwerk, das man erlernen kann und in dem man vorgibt, jemand anderer zu sein. Es ist etwas, wo man einen bestimmten Charakter darstellt…

Stefan Teplan: … der einen aber, wenn man sich in ihn vollständig einfühlt, vielleicht auch selbst verändern kann.

Ben Kingsley: Das ist eigentlich eine ganz einfache Aufgabe, diese Handlung umzusetzen, die einem vorgegeben wird. Und das führt nicht unbedingt zu einer Veränderung. Das ist nur Energie, eine Kraft, die ich sehr stark in einen bestimmten Charakter konzentriere, so dass dieser Charakter durch mich lebt. Aber auf die Psyche hat das überhaupt keine Auswirkungen. Ich sitze hier als Ben und werde auch weiterhin als Ben hier sitzen. Sie können das vergleichen mit einem Maler, der ein Porträt malt. Er hat eine gewisse Distanz; er muss ja nicht die Person werden, die er auf dem Bild darstellt. Genauso ist die Distanz auch zwischen mir und dem Charakter. Diese Distanz ist immer gegeben.

Stefan Teplan: Wollen Sie jetzt Ihren Ruf zerstören?

Ben Kingsley: Ich möchte den Mythos meiner minutiösen Vorbereitung auf eine Rolle nicht allzu sehr zerstören; das schmeichelt mir ja auch irgendwie. Aber ich muss so ehrlich sein und Ihnen sagen, meine Hauptaufgabe als Schauspieler ist es, voll da zu sein, mich auf die Situation einzustellen. Ich muss am Drehort selbst ein Bewusstsein für die Situation haben, die gerade gedreht wird. Ich muss auf meine Kollegen eingehen können, ich muss auf die Kamera eingehen können, auf die Tausende von Marokkanern (der Film „Moses“ wurde in Marokko gedreht – Anm. d. Red.), die an dem Film mitgewirkt haben, von denen die meisten meinen Namen kennen und mir guten Morgen wünschten – es sind übrigens ganz phantastische Leute – , und es ist dieser Druck, den ich verspüre, wenn Aufnahmen gemacht werden. Das alles führt dann dazu, dass ich mich an die Situation anpassen kann.

Stefan Teplan: Also Spontanität vor Rollenpauken?

Ben Kingsley: Ich kann natürlich auch zu Hause in meinem Haus in England sitzen und in Büchern mir eine Vorstellung davon anlesen, wie es wohl ist, wenn man bei brütender Hitze in einer Wüste ist und Tausende von Leuten um sich herum hat. Aber das ist natürlich nicht das Gleiche, als wenn ich in der Wüste selbst da bin und dann fühle, wie die Sonne auf mich einbrennt. Dann bin ich da, da bin ich ich selbst und das ist die beste Vorbereitung.

Stefan Teplan: Hatte die Verfilmung des Moses zumindest einen Einfluss auf Ihre Lebensphilosophie?

Ben Kingsley: Es ist eigentlich eine Minimierung von Handlungen, die man für einen Film vornimmt. Denn man versucht, eine gewisse Realität zu projizieren. Ich habe 15 Jahre lang Shakespeare gespielt, und ich bin dabei in Theatern aufgetreten, die nicht größer waren als dieser Raum hier. Und ich musste in diesen Theatern die Personen, die ich dargestellt hatte, bis in die hinterste Ecke des Raumes projizieren. Das hat auch eine gewisse Energie vorausgesetzt. Beim Film ist das ganz anders. Dort ist es die Kamera, die mich sucht, mich findet und dann das aufnimmt, was ich in einen Charakter investiere.

Stefan Teplan: Also ist Moses für sie eine Rolle wie jede andere? Oder gibt es etwas, was Sie daran besonders fasziniert?

Ben Kingsley: Das Moses ist gewissermaßen ein Held wider Willen, er will eigentlich gar kein Held sein. Außerdem hat er Probleme beim Sprechen, richtige Kommunikationsprobleme. Und dieser Held wider Willen mit Kommunikationsproblemen ist die große Herausforderung für den Schauspieler, eine Herausforderung, die ich auch jetzt noch verspüre, wenn ich Ihnen das erläutere. Es ist diese Tatsache, dass da ein Mensch ist, der zu Gott sagt: „Du hast den falschen erwählt. Ich bin nicht der richtige Mann, um diese Aufgabe wahrzunehmen.“ Und der es dann doch schafft, zum Führer und Sprecher eines Volkes zu werden. Gerade diese Dynamik, die sich aus dem Charakter ergibt, ist auch für den Schauspieler etwas ganz Besonderes, weil er merkt, dass er auch das Bewusstsein der Zuschauer entsprechend beeinflussen kann. Moses ist die Geschichte eines verlassenen, ausgestoßenen Kindes, das als Mann zum Führer eines Volkes wird und im Blickpunkt aller Handlungen seines Volkes steht. Und diese Entwicklung verleiht diesem Film seine ganz besondere Dynamik. Es ist wirklich einfach außerordentlich, diese Entwicklung zu sehen.

Stefan Teplan: Sie haben jetzt mit „Joseph“ und „Moses“ in zwei Bibelfilmen mitgespielt. Sind Sie selbst religiös?

Ben Kingsley: Darauf möchte ich nicht öffentlich eingehen. Das ist eine sehr persönliche Sache, die nur mich allein betrifft. Ich hoffe, Sie haben dafür Verständnis.

Stefan Teplan: Gehören Sie denn einer Kirche oder einer religiösen Gemeinschaft an?

Ben Kingsley: Nein.

Stefan Teplan: Immerhin aber mussten Sie sich schon rein beruflich mit der Bibel beschäftigen. Was für ein Verhältnis haben Sie zu ihr?

Ben Kingsley: Wahrscheinlich habe ich zu ihr dasselbe Verhältnis wie Sie. Vielleicht habe ich inzwischen nur etwas mehr Einblick, wie sich dieser Exodus der Israeliten aus Ägyptenabgespielt haben muss. So eine Reise, die 40 Jahre lang dauert, ist natürlich, besonders für uns heute, unfassbar – noch dazu eine Reise, die man mit äußerst ungeduldigen Menschen unternimmt, die jeden Tag meckern und an einem etwas auszusetzen haben. Ich denke, ich habe jetzt eine Beziehung zu dieser Geschichte. Es ist einfach so, dass ich jetzt Gesichter sehe. Ich weiß jetzt, wie die Charaktere sind, ich weiß jetzt, wer Miriam ist, ich kenne Aaron oder den Pharao. Das sind Leute, die mussten ganz schreckliche Entscheidungen treffen, und ich hatte einfach in zwei Monaten das nachgestellt, was diese Leute in 40 Jahren erlebt haben. Ich habe inzwischen ein persönliches Verhältnis zu diesem Teil der Bibel, und ich halte die Bibel für ein ganz besonderes Buch.

É galera a produção do filme baseado em Prince of Persia está seguindo muito bem, o filme tem como inspiração o game Prince of Persia : The Sands of time,  lançado em 2003 que revitalizou e colocou a série em destaque novamente.

Assim como no game, o filme conta a história de um príncipe que foi induzido pelo vizir liberar as areias do tempo para conseguir um grande poder, mas ao invés disso acaba liberando uma antiga maldição que coloca todo seu reino em perigo. Agora o príncipe tem que se unir a uma misteriosa princesa para tentar salvar seu reino.

Jake Gyllenhaal (O Segredo de Brokeback Montain/ Donnie Darko) assume o papel do príncipe sem nome, mas que longa  é chamado de Dastan, o elenco é formado por Gemma Arterton(007 Quantum of Solace) e os veteranos Ben Kingsley e Alfred Molina.

A direção do filme é de Mike Newell(Harry Potter e o Cálice de Fogo), a produção fica por conta de Jerry Bruckheimer(CSI e Piratas do Caribe) e o roteiro é assinado por Jordan Mechner o criador do game. As filmagens aconteceram no Marrocos e atualmente Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time está em fase de Pós Produção e tem estréia marcada para 28 de Maio de 2010.

Apesar de Prince estar com visual parecido como do game Prince of Persia Warrior Within, nota-se a importância que tiveram com a caracterização do personagem.

Enfim, não gosto de fazer previsões otimistas  porque acabam gerando expectativas demais, porém…

Na minha opinião esse filme tem tudo para ser o melhor filme baseado em games até agora, por várias razões  como: Bons atores, preocupação  com a caracterização dos personagens e do ambiente, ótima trilha sonora, um alto orçamento bancado pela Disney, pessoas talentosas na produção e direção.  Mas um ponto muito importante e a participação de Jordan Mechner  no roteiro do filme, pois em algumas entrevistas que li, Mechner sempre se mostrou muito ser  cuidadoso com relação aos produtos ligados a série que criou.

Valoración: 7/10

Sinopsis: Martin es un joven irlandés que malvive trapicheando con mercancía robada. Su habilidad para moverse por los barrios en los que opera el IRA no pasa desapercibida para Fergus, un agente de la inteligencia británica que decide reclutarlo. Muy a su pesar y con la única intención de salvar vidas, Martin acepta la misión infiltrándose en la banda terrorista y pasando información sobre sus golpes a Fergus. Mientras su amistad con el agente se hace cada vez más cercana, Martin ascenderá dentro del IRA aumentando cada vez más el riesgo de ser descubierto por sus propios amigos.

Crítica: 50 Hombres Muertos es una truculenta historia ambientada en la ya de por sí sórdida guerra de Irlanda del Norte, una aún más sucia que las demás en la que ningún bando escatimó en crueldad para hacerse con una victoria que, como la historia ha demostrado, residía en el entendimiento y el diálogo y no en la represión o la bala en la nuca. Skogland, con un estilo dinámico y acertado visualmente, retrata la sociedad norirlandesa de la época a través de los ojos de Martin, interpretado por un notable Jim Sturgess. Martin, como dictan los cánones del género, es un infiltrado asqueado de sus correligionarios, de sus nuevos amos y de sí mismo. Tal vez este aspecto sea el menos interesante del conjunto, ya que aunque basada en las experiencias propias del protagonista, no escapa a algunos tópicos del subgénero ni logra la intensidad e impacto de algunas otras obras que han tratado el conflicto. El aspecto más comercial de la cinta, historia romántica de por medio, choca de lleno con otros episodios turbios que logran revolver tripas y conciencia hasta que, justo antes de llegar al límite, se lleva al espectador a terrenos más calmados. Siempre en la cuerda floja, Martin deja su vida en las manos de Fergus, un inquietante y manipulador Ben Kingsley por fin alejado de sus demasiado habituales “trabajos alimenticios”, que termina en parte por zamparse sin esfuerzo la película. La relación entre ambos, infiltrado y agente, estrecha pero peligrosa y marcada por sus propias lealtades, lleva continuamente la trama al límite, aunque una vez más sin revasarlo. Skogland, demasiado ambigua pero amparada en los hechos reales en los que se basa el guión, no escatima en mostrar la parte más negra, aterradora y sangrienta del conflicto, aderezándola eso sí con algunos tics propios del cine más comercial que restan legitimidad y autenticidad al conjunto pero sin dañarlo de forma insalvable ni hacerlo perder dignidad ni interés.

Lo de este fin de semana puede leerse como un anticipo de lo que viene: películas familiares, superproducciones, productos para todos los públicos… y sí, aunque estemos todavía a mediados de noviembre, cine navideño. Así que nada: al que no le guste, ya se puede ir preparando, porque hasta que avance enero y nos metamos en febrero, y lleguen en aluvión las cintas que mojarán en los Oscar, esto es lo que hay:

-2012: Roland Emmerich vive muy, pero que muy feliz con el cartelito de “director de películas de catástrofes”. A ellas se entrega con fruición y pasión. Con la excusa del calendario maya vuelve a cargarse el mundo. Enrola en su mastodóntico proyecto a tipos acabados como John Cusack (qué cansino, el pobre), Woody Harrelson y Danny Glover, y a otros de difícil etiquetado como Chiwetel Ejiofor y Amanda Peet. Pues eso: palomitas, refresco, efectos digitales por un tubo, adrenalina y carreras, edificios emblemáticos a tomar por saco y poquito más.

-Cuento de navidad: El que decidió estrenar esta cinta a mes y pico de la época que le da título, o bien es un genio, o un tonto rematado. Vistos los 30 millones que ha recaudado en USA en su primer fin de semana, en fin, parece más bien lo segundo. Nos prometen una revisión del cuento de Dickens donde tienen mucho que decir los efectos digitales y las muecas de Jim Carrey; básicamente, los dos factores en los que se resume la ecuación de esta cinta. Disney ha empezado a presionar para que se reconozca el fantástico, dicen, trabajo desplegado por Carrey, ante el temor de que quede sepultado bajo tanto ordenador. Vaya con Disney… En fin, gustará a los niños.

-Triage: Colin Farrell, Christopher Lee y ¡argh!, que dirían en la Cuore, Paz Vega en una de fotógrafos de guerra con mucho tormento interior.

-50 hombres muertos: Thriller británico-canadiense con Ben Kingsley.

-Partir: Una francesa con extraña pareja, Kristin Scott-Thomas y Sergi López.

-El viaje de la tortuga: Documental.

Tres años y algo más de un mes quedan por delante para el Apocalipsis que predijeron los mayas (a los que por cierto, como ha comentado esta mañana en un medio radiofónico, un erudito español en el tema, no se les ocurrió predecir la llegada a su territorio de los conquistadores, y lo que ello iba a repercutir en su civilización), pero Roland Emmerich no ha esperado a la fecha prevista para el cataclismo mundial, para realizar y estrenar “2012”, su versión de lo que acontecerá durante los días 21, 22, y 23 de diciembre de ese año, y nos adelanta el fin del mundo para que nos vayamos haciendo una idea de la que nos espera, desplegando todo un espectáculo que podremos ver, sentados cómodamente, en una de las butacas de nuestra sala de cine favorita.

Otros cinco títulos se estrenan esta semana, y uno de ellos, da la impresión de que su distribuidora española se ha confundido de fecha para su lanzamiento en las salas cinematográficas.

Ahora lo veréis.

“Cuento de Navidad” (¿Por qué no han esperado a estrenarlo dentro de poco más de un mes, que parece lo más apropiado?), es un film dirigido por Robert Zemeckis (las tres “Regreso al futuro”, “Forrest Gump” -1994), adaptando nuevamente para el cine, “Canción de Navidad”, historia debida a la pluma de Charles Dickens. La Nochebuena de su protagonista, Mr. Scrooge, se nos presenta esta vez, con la técnica del Mocap. Jim Carrey, como Scrooge, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins, Robin Wright Penn, Cary Elwes y Fionnula Flanagan la protagonizan, pero será el tratamiento animado posterior de sus imágenes, lo que veremos en la pantalla; y… por lo que pudimos apreciar en su trailer, estamos ante un clásico algo más trepidante de lo que habíamos visto hasta ahora.

“50 hombres muertos” es una película coproducida por Reino Unido y Canadá. Su acción se sitúa en la Belfast de finales de los años 80, cuando dominaba el terrorismo del IRA. Ben Kingsley y Jim Sturgess la protagonizan. Dirige Kari Skogland (“En el punto de mira” -2002)

“Triage” está realizada por el director bosnio Danis Tanovic (“En tierra de nadie” -2001, Oscar a la Mejor Película de Habla no Inglesa), y arranca presentando a dos amigos, fotógrafos de guerra, en Kurdistan. Está protagonizada por Colin Farrell y Christopher Lee, aunque también veremos a la española Paz Vega.

“Partir”, es un drama producido en Francia, y protagonizado por la británica Kristin Scott Thomas y el actor español Sergi López. Cuenta como una mujer de mediana edad, casada, y en buena posición, conoce a un hombre de vida turbulenta que despierta en ella una pasión incontrolable, lo que le hace decidir abandonarlo todo por el.

Un documental cierra los estrenos de esta semana. Se trata de “El viaje de la tortuga”. Está producido por USA y Austria. Un excelente reportaje que narra no tan sólo las vicisitudes para sobrevivir de una tortuga marina, si no que expone también, a través de ella, los cambios que están aconteciendo en los océanos, y que ponen en peligro la continuidad de muchas especies, entre ellas, la de la tortuga protagonista.

Cuando Mark regresa a casa ensangrentado y lleno de hematomas, se sorprende, aunque en principio no se muestra preocupado al saber que David no ha logrado volver a casa. Elena (Paz Vega), la mujer de Mark, está preocupada por los dos. Mark está exhausto, desorientado y es incapaz de reasumir su antigua vida en Dublín.

El actor Ben Kingsley anunció que él y su esposa Daniela Lavender estarán estelarizando una nueva cinta llamada Taj, que será producida por ellos mismos. La película abordará la vida del emperador hindú Shah Jahan, quien pasara a la historia como el hombre que mandó construir el Taj Mahal. Su esposa interpretará a la consorte del gobernante, y de acuerdo a las declaraciones, se buscará mostrarla como una mujer fuerte y capaz de desenvolverse y hacer valer su opinión en un mundo masculino. Claro, el hecho de que esta mujer no haya sido así en la vida real es un pequeño detalle que al parecer podrán pasar por alto.

“A Sound of Thunder” could be the worst science fiction film I have seen since “Battlefield Earth” and this time we can’t blame Travolta. Wanna know why?

“A Sound of Thunder” is based on a classic Ray Bradbury story that chronicles what happens when man steps back into the distant past and changes the smallest of things like killing the tiniest of insect, dropping a gum wrapper or picking a flower. One of these smallest changes could bring about the end of the world as we know it.

In the year 2055, TimeSafari is making a killing as it takes millionaires and other spoiled rich people back to the age of dinosaurs on the “greatest hunt man has ever known”. The brain behind this venture is Charles Hatton (Ben Kingsley) who loves money more than common sense hence the reason he is now worth billions. Leading the safaris and trying to maintain an ethical look under Hatton’s shadow is Travis Ryer (Edward Burns) who one day wants to use TimeSafari’s technology to better mankind.

As all these kinds of stories go, something goes terribly wrong and 2055 begins to change from what Ryer and Hatton remember it being. Ryer teams up with a revolutionary scientist Sonia Rand (Catherine McCormack) to uncover what went wrong on their last safari and to fix it if they can.

We have seen this kind of time-travel story before or is it just me that all time machine stories are basically the same. Anyways that is the least of the film’s problems.

Let us examine some of the obvious problems with the film.

One, the visual effects away are juvenile at best. Some of creature effects are passable and interesting but also utterly soulless and stiff in places.

It is almost like the studio forgot to finish some of the effects. Also, why did two of the major conversations in the film have to be staged in the middle of busy street that is filmed in front of horrendously bad blue screen?

The second is the implausibility of how things change when time is altered. The film says that time changes like ripples when a stone hits water thus the explanation for the film’s utterly stupid “time waves”. It doesn’t make sense then there is all the other sci-fi techno babble that is just so baffling.

Thirdly there is the production design from the goofy plastic helmets, toy laser rifles made from some bad plastic, the ridiculous “ape-tors” who hunt our heroes, and of course Ben Kingsley “jet-white” spiked hair. I do have to say the helmets and guns do look like they were stolen from the wardrobe of the classic Irwin Allen TV series, “Lost in Space”.

Fourth, the script is just so bad I had a hard time listening to any of these people and furthermore the acting was wooden and vacuous. Even Kingsley looked bored beyond all recognition.

I could go on and on about more ridiculous and awful things in this film but some you just have to see to believe. Like how about a love scene without even a single kiss? And, no, there was no time machine involved.

I like Edward Burns but would somebody get this man a real agent because his imaginary friend just isn’t doing the proper job. After this and “15 Minutes”, Edward Burns will be working on the Lifetime Network before he can say “cheese”. I often refer to the Lifetime Network as the network where good actors go to die.

I have liked a lot of director Peter Hyams films dating all the way back to 1978’s “Capricorn One”. Actually there have been a lot of his films which I would think would make good rentals including 1981’s “Outland”, 1984’s “2010: The Year We Make Contact”, 1986’s “Running Scared”, 1988’s “The Presidio”, 1992’s “Stay Tuned”, 1994’s “Timecop” and 1997’s “The Relic”. The man isn’t a genius behind the camera but he has done a lot of good B-movies and some memorable flicks.

But after this movie, 1999’s “End of Days” and 2001’s “The Musketeer”, Hyams needs to take a vacation and maybe one day soon he will bring back the fun B-films of yesterday that he was good at making.

This film’s only redeeming feature is probably the dusty, dated original short story written by Ray Bradbury.

Jake Gyllenhaal turns action hero in Prince of Persia – The Sands of Time, based on the video game of the same name. Pretty cool that on of the first videogames I have ever played is still alive and kicking.

Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Prince Dastan alongside of Gemma Arterton as Tamina, Alfred Molina, Ben Kingsley, and Toby Kebbell.

Hitting theaters from may 28th, 2010.  Judging on the looks of the trailer Disney is taking things pretty seriously. Will this be the follow-up franchise for Pirates of the Caribbean? See for yourselves below:

War As Carnivale

Sometime in 2008 as the Bush Presidency wound down, John Cusack and his troupe came out with War Inc. In many ways it was a pointed picture that satirised the American wars fought in Iraq and Afghanistan with much ‘privatisation’ of the war effort handed out to Halliburton. It’s a worthy subject matter and John Cusack has been known to mount snappy, witty critiques in his films such as ‘Grosse Pointe Blank’, ‘High Fidelity’ and ‘Max’. The film is directed by Joshua Seftel, but it’s safe to say, this is a star vehicle with the star’s authorial stamp emblazoned on the screen.

Unfortunately the film had the shortest of runs in the cinemas in Australia, and the story was essentially eclipsed by the stunning victory of Barack Obama. Thus I finally got to watch the film on DVD months after its immediate relevance had seemingly passed. That’s the caveat.

What’s Good About It

I have trouble saying this is a good film. Is it a bad film? I don’t want it to be, but it just might be. Maybe I’m expecting too much, but the breezy wisecracks about American values and the irony of a privatised war machine are all very poignant, but the film never actually comes close to addressing the cause.

The film dos make clear that privatising aspects of war to private companies that operate on profit is essentially condones state-sponsored mercenaries to play havoc on other people’s lives, and that this is going to to have tragicomic consequences. But this is no great discovery. Instead of showing why or how this is a real problem, the film chooses to describe the effects in fragments. Sometimes it looks like ‘Full Metal Jacket’. Other times it looks like a very bad trade show. The film nver finds the right tone to its comedy. It contrasts greatly with a film such as Nicolas Cage’s ‘Lord of War’ which is unstinting in its Machiavellian tone.

Marisa Tomei is good (but she’s not asked to do much), Joan Cusack is not so good. Hilary Duff’s made up accent is bizarre, even accounting for the made-up country -  whatever she’s supposed to sound like, she sounds bizarre. John Cusack by his own standards is pretty ordinary in this film. It does have some funny moments but the viewing experience on the whole is disappointing.

What’s Bad About It

As gallows humor satire goes, the film is nowhere near as even as ‘Gross Point Blank’ before it. Nor is it as insightful as ‘Max’. You get the feeling that the heavily ironic subjective reflection of those films got reworked to fit a greater story about geopolitics, but it’s actually so insufficient to addressing the issues at hand, it comes across as juvenile.

Also, the setting of a made up country called ‘Turaqistan’ was probably an attempt at trying to generalise the point rather than get caught in the specifics of the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, but if the last decade has taught us anything, it’s not the general principles of war that suck, it’s the details that characterise each and every military action. Iraq has entirely unique reasons of its own why war there is fucked up, as is the case with Afghanistan, and this is before the perversity of Halliburtons and their private contracts to supply the US military.

In the end, the imagining of Turaqistan seems more racist and stereotyping of Central Asia than offering any kind of insight into war. Just as it lambasts American cultural imperialism, it enacts its own, and there’s no claims of irony that can forgive that miscue.

What’s Interesting About It

The film is in its essence, a kind of self-flagellation by Gen-X, over the war. The film in its structure is a re-run of ‘Grosse Pointe Blank’. Cusack is a reluctant hitman on a job. He seeks some solace from the brutality of his job. Meets a girl. decides that it gives him the impetus to quit. Turns out his target is not who he really wants to kill – he wants to kill his handler instead.

Dan Aykoryd makes an appearance, this time not as the rival hitman but his client. Instead, Ben Kingsley steps in to play the handler who he has to kill twice in the course of the film. Joan Cusack reprises herself role as the emotionally stunted assistant and Marisa Tomei steps in as the love interest.  In the process we see all the things that worked well for ‘Grosse Pointe Blank’ fail miserably.

What made ‘Grosse Pointe Blank’ so good was how the sense of irony spilled out from a decidedly subjective sense of history. The hitman was a Gen-X guy. His roots were in suburbia that oozed complacency and yet the spirit was so restless. All of that was against the backdrop of a very sunny Clintonian 90s.

In ‘War Inc.’ we find the same restless spirit slap bang up against the GWB Naughties, where the sense of fun has devolved into a gallows laugh, where ironic detachment is no longer quite enough to stand apart. In a sense, the film is trying to take a side against war itself but its protagonist is a hitman. It can’t relinquish violence as readily as it relinquishes ideology. And that’s interesting because we’re all living the very real nightmare wars right now. We’re just lucky enough not to be there in Iraq or Afghanistan. The ironic distance we can generate is simply the same distance that lies between where we sit and those countries.

In that sense, there’s a real desperation to this production that is palpable. It is as if Cusack and his troupe are desperately trying to find some answers as they go for the things that worked in the past, and failing. Are ‘getting the girl’ or ‘re-uniting the family’ structures enough of a story to critique a heavily post-modern war? Is the film media strong enough to take on the tidal wave of other news media operating as spin? If anything this film shows just how quaint film is in the scheme of media.

Ten years on from ‘Grosse Pointe Blank’, Gen-X is being asked to step up and somehow we’re all oddly failing. The self-reflexive, heavily subjective sense of self can’t shake the posturing to come at a straight anti-war or Pro-War position. This isn’t the Vietnam generation at all. There’s too much awareness of interests – both national and self – to do that. Instead, it grumbles and goes to work, even if it is dirty work. I doubt Baby boomers would take kindly to this film where principles are sacrificed readily, but the conscience is not. Let’s face it, Oliver Stone wouldn’t make this film. However it is possible this conscience of Gen-X made the difference in voting in Barack Obama.

Maybe in 5-10years we would understand this film and by extension 2008, even more. Right now, it looks like its flailing about in the dark, probing for a light switch.

I have to say I’ve been waiting awhile for this trailer and I wasn’t disappointed, the shot when the dagger takes over half his body gave me chills, so check this shit out!

Prince of Persia the video game, AWESOME, Prince of Persia the movie, I’m not so sure about.  But I might entertain it after watching the trailer.  Look for Jake Gyllenhaal to star as Prince Dastan and Ben Kingsley as the evil Nizam.  Enjoy
