“Hey dum-dum. You give me gum-gum!”: One of the most beloved attractions at The Museum of Natural History is “Dum Dum” the talking Easter Island tiki statue from the 2006 movie “A Night At The Museum” starring Ben Stiller.

‘Dum Dum’ is actually a Moai carved by the Rapa Nui people from rock on the Chilean Polynesian island of Easter Island between the years 1250 and 1500AD. Nearly half are still at Rana Raraku, the main moai quarry, but hundreds were transported from there and set on stone platforms called ahu around the island’s perimeter. Eleven of the 887 statues have been given to museums around the world and have become well loved, especially ‘Dum Dum’.

Their story is extraordinary: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moai

Kidnapping celebrities and stealing scripts, indie actress Halley Feiffer will do anything to get back in the spotlight after she’s dumped by her boyfriend and fired by her agent in He’s Way More Famous Than You. In deep denial of the real issue in her life – her alcoholism – she convinces her brother Ryan (Ryan Spahn) and his boyfriend (Michael Urie) to help her write and star in her own film. Desperate to be successful, Halley tries to find more famous co-stars, leading to cameo appearances by Ben Stiller, Vanessa Williams, Ralph Macchio, Mamie Gummer, Jesse Eisenberg, and Natasha Lyonne.

Today, I watched the movie Greenberg, which was released back in 2010, but I had never seen it until

Today, I watched the movie Greenberg, which was released back in 2010, but I had never seen it until now. It is about a 40-year-old man named Roger Greenberg (played by Ben Stiller) who recently suffered a “nervous breakdown”, and takes some time away from his New York life to house-sit for his brother in L.A.

My educated guess is that Greenberg is bipolar, although a brief “stay in a mental hospital” is all that is mentioned. His erratic behavior, self-obsession, hypercriticism, mania, impulsivity, and anger issues cause many problems in his relationships with others and with his own peace of mind. Sound familiar?

He hooks up with his brother’s assistant, Florence, a passive somewhat flighty 25-year-old, who offered the most memorable line in the movie for me as she was talking to her friend about Greenberg:

“You can tell that a lot of normal stuff is really hard for him.”

…like maintaining friendships, hosting a get-together, shopping, driving, and taking care of the family dog when it becomes ill, to name a few.

As big of an A-hole as this Greenberg could be, I felt bad for him because a lot of normal stuff is really hard for me, too, and I often get frustrated with myself…the same way Greenberg’s brother and friends get with him for “not trying harder” or “not being able to control his emotional outbursts” or “obsessing over things.”

Florence seems to see beyond Greenberg’s neurotic behaviors. She sees him not as the jerk he is on the outside, but as a person who is victim to a disease he can’t completely control.

It was a weird movie that left me feeling unsettled because it wasn’t one of those feel-good endings like he conquered all of his demons and was cured. He was still the same…just a bit more grounded with her in his life.

This post isn’t meant to be a movie review. It is meant to process the take away message I gathered, which is that Greenberg’s an ass because he has a mental illness and he’s lucky he found someone who understands that.

Seems rather depressing to me, but is this reality for some of us…if we are lucky?

What are your thoughts? How many rude, obnoxious, mean people do you know? Have you ever considered the fact that they may have a mental illness whose symptoms are flaring up? And that if they didn’t have a mental illness, they might be fairly tolerable and decent to people the majority of the time? Is mental illness an excuse for bad behavior or merely an explanation, or both?

If you know anything about being an actress, it’s that of course it’s all kinds glamorous. But also if you know anything about being an actress, it’s that it’s only glamorous when you’re actually getting paid. Like you know, have some actual semi-decent gigs going.

And when there isn’t any work, the vanity can fade; the once glimmering life that seemed all sorts of fabulous fun can turn into a dark pit of champagne blackouts and regrettable drunk dials to very, very important famous people.

That’s kind of what happens in Michael Urie’s new hilarious movie He’s Way More Famous Than You, when a desperate actress Halley (Halley Feiffer) who appeared briefly in the indie favorite The Squid and the Whale gets her little tiny moment of fame (like, she totally poses at an important party with Jesse Eisenberg.) Flash forward 6 years later, and she’s on the verge of tears looking up IMDb ratings to see who’s still on top of the game, taking selfies while having pretty terrible sex with her boyfriend (Michael Chernus)—more importantly: plotting schemes to somehow steal the Hollywood spotlight.

So OBVI she’s on a quest to produce and star in her new movie, that’s really just a stolen script from her ex. Except for there’s no plot. But she will do anything she can and contact every single connection she has to ensure her first feature is one to remember.

When trying to find her male lead (very drunk, mind you), she uses her brother’s (Ryan Spahn) boyfriend (Michael Urie) who was once on Ugly Betty to somehow get a hold of the Karate Kid (like, THE Karate Kid Ralph Maccio), meaning that, OF COURSE this movie’s going to be a big hit, because RALPH MACCIO is going to be the star!

It’s not pretty. But you can’t help but love Halley Feiffer’s role; she will have you cracking up every other second with her drunken shenanigans that are like, TOTES OBVS THE MOST AWESOME EVER!

He’s Way More Famous Than You is a ridiculous story about vanity and just what some people will do to be an A-lister. The very animated cast features anyone from Ben Stiller (who gets kidnapped) to Vanessa Williams, making for even more reasons why to love Michael Urie’s debut movie (as if Halley Feiffer isn’t reason enough!).

I will admit over the years I have had some of my favourite movies tarnished and ruined forever in m

I will admit over the years I have had some of my favourite movies tarnished and ruined forever in my mind after seeing their (cheesy money-making) sequels. ‘Grease 2’ anybody??

However, I also believe that film sequels have gotten themselves a bad reputation. As there are some sequels that I believe are better than their predecessors.

For example ‘Meet The Fockers’ in 2004, which was made after the phenomenal success of ‘Meet The Parents’ in 2000.
‘Meet The Fockers’ had a lot to live up to, but it surpassed ‘Meet The Parents’ in every way. It was funnier, whackier and crazier. In the first film we saw Ben Stiller’s character, Greg go to meet his girlfriend’s parents (The Byrnes) before proposing to her. However firstly he had to get the approval of her suspicious father (Robert DeNiro). In the second film Greg introduces the Byrnes to his parents by getting them to stay the weekend at their house. This film gives the audience more variety by introducing new and eccentric characters in contrast to the first film, where the majority of the characters were stiff and dry in humour. Seeing the two completely different families trying to interact was comedy gold.

Another example of a superior sequel is of course the sequel to “Batman Begins”, which is “The Dark Knight”.
‘Batman, The Dark Knight’ took everything great about the first movie and simply made it better. The franchise brought batman away from the commercialised/ comic style batman and made it gritty and more realistic. While also staying true to its roots by keeping the iconic symbols. What really made ‘The Dark Knight’ better than ‘Batman Begins’ was the arrival of a darker villain. ‘The Joker’ played by the late Heath Ledger. Ledger transformed the Joker and portrayed him in a way never done before, permanently tattooing the phrase “Why so serious”? into the minds of movie fanatics and Batman fans all over the world. This sequel without a doubt knocks its predecessor off it’s pedestal.

For fun, let’s look at one more film sequel that should banish the stereotype that ‘all sequels are muck’. ‘Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back’. The film was released in 1980 and quotes from the movie are still spoken and used in films today. Such as Yoda’s line of “Do, or do not. There is no try”. The First Star Wars film ‘A New Hope’ was released in 1977 and without a doubt was way ahead of its time, introducing the world to much loved characters such as Master Yoda, Darth Vader and Princess Leia. However what made ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ so much better than the first film was the iconic scene of the duel that takes place between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. It is perhaps one of the most famous film reveals and twists of all time. Especially for movie goers who would have seen it originally for the first time, it was a twist that more than likely they didn’t see coming. I think that’s what really made the franchise as successful as it is. Not only does it wow its audience with fantasy and action, but it explores the darker relationships between people and their pasts.

So there you have it, the next time you hear of a sequel being made of your favourite film, don’t dispair. It may surprise you and do even better than the original. I for one cannot wait to see the sequel to Disney’s ‘Finding Nemo’ which is due to be released in 2015 and will be called ‘Finding Dory’.
So watch this space….

Watched this movie last night. It was dumb. I mean, I get it. But it wasn’t much to me. I suppose it was interesting to see Alan Alda play the bad guy. But the humour was pretty tepid, which is a shame when you have Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy together. And I’m sorry, but I can’t see Matthew Broderick in anything without thinking “Ferris!” I’m sure he’d hate to hear that. Sorry Ferris, er, I mean, Mr. Broderick, sir. And the plot, well, let’s just say you could see it all coming. Sigh.

Spoiler Alert… sort of. Reading past this point will give you questions to ask about the ending of this film. You may even be able to figure out the ending, based on my questions. If you haven’t yet seen it, and don’t want your own take on it spoiled by my gibbering, stop reading now. Or not. Your choice.

The other thing that bugs me is the ending. I mean, the whole whole chess thing, yes yes I get it, aren’t they clever. But that Ferrari was on top of the elevator car. How’d they get it out of the elevator shaft and into the pool? That bit’s never explained. And how did they get past the FBI to get access to the car afterwards so they so they could take it apart and distribute the pieces to those who’d been screwed over by Alda? Wouldn’t hotel staff and security notice strangers lugging out boxes full of shiny gold tire rims and bumpers? And what the hell were all those people gonna do with golden car parts? Does everyone in New York City know a good fence, or what?

Totally unsatisfactory ending.

Directors Eric Darnell, Tom Mcgarth and this time Conrad Vernon bring to us the third sequel to the finest Madagascar series. DreamWorks Animation brings us a wonderful family film, enlightening a smile to your face and entertainment for all.

The title ‘Europe’s Most Wanted’ is definitely the perfect words to describe the Film’s journey. Alex (Ben Stiller), Marty (Chris Rock), Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Melman (David Schwimmer) set out on a crazy adventure, aiming to get back to their home; New York City. The place where they belong, can be free and continue to love what they’re doing, entertaining the public. But this isn’t just any old adventure, one which comes with twisted turns, jumps, bumps and the odd spark of romance. Their journey isn’t easy though. Antagonist Captain Chantel DuBois thrives to catch these animals and spare them alive, just for collection. However, with helping the circus and literally becoming part of them, their destination becomes clearer and well closer, reconsidering where they truly belong.

Madagascar 3 is a very well thought out film truly engaging the audience, not once allowing them to leave the screen. The action, danger and overall busyness were impeccably achieved, resulting in an

Antagonist Chantel DuBois

entertaining tale rather than being complex. There wasn’t too much nor too less, it was just right.

The colours and beautiful shots of the cities; Monte Carlo, Rome and New York were magnificently absorbed. The vividness and exquisite colour perfectly lit the scenes, complimenting with the warm ambience and exciting mood.

Overall, Madagascar 3 is a must watch! A great, hurt-proof villain who nicely adds to the tale, but also brings some sense of story. The characters and new faces together create this perfect family, hence bringing ‘Afro Circus’ to life. Resulting in clever morals and genuinely an epic adventure.

I have to just add that King Julien’s romantic affair with Sonya the bear was genius and definitely unforgettable.

And last but not least, be warned, after watching this film Marty’s famous ‘Afro Circus’ song will be stuck in your head!

Source: http://scrapetv.com/News/News%20Pages/Entertainment/Images/tropic-thunder-poster.jpg

Directed by and starring Ben Stiller, ‘Tropic Thunder’ is a parody of what could happen during the making of a ‘Vietnam War’ story. Mr. Stiller plays the action star hero – ‘Tugg Speedman’, who is trying to keep his acting career alive as his previous movies have begun to lose their appeal with the audience. The storyline of this flick is based on a fictional book of the same name, Tropic Thunder. Steve Coogan who plays the role of the director, decides to submerge the spoiled actors into the thickness of the jungle to shoot the film as acting setbacks and budget losses force him to take control of the situation. This parody of film creation easily becomes a memorable one.

1. Acting – Loaded with some of the biggest stars in Hollywood, each character brings something unique to the table of ‘Tropic Thunder’. The separation of acting between the actual movie and the inner storyline is a great parody of decades old war movies that many of us grew up with. The actors themselves portrayed their characters with undeniable distinction as each role added something more to the movie.

2. Makeup – One of the most memorable aspects of ‘Tropic Thunder’ is the incredible makeup used on Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr in order to make them nearly unidentifiable from real life. At first glance, both of these actors are well hidden behind the look of their characters.

Robert Downey Jr is nearly completely disguised as he plays the character ‘Kirk Lazarus’ – an Australian actor who delves deep into the psyche of the character he portrays in movies. He changes his voice, mannerisms, and facial features so well that if you didn’t know it was Mr. Downey, you wouldn’t easily recognize him.

Source: http://www.onlygoodmovies.com/images/content/downey-tropic-thunder.jpg

Tom Cruise is a little easier to identify in the character of ‘Less Grossman’- the mogul behind the movie studio fronting the production for ‘Tropic Thunder’ in this film. Although the makeup artists do an amazing job of creating a whole new look for Mr. Cruise, there is just something around the eyes that give his true identity away.

Source: http://gossiponthis.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/les-grossman.jpg

3. Dialogue – Tropic Thunder has a great cast with an equally great set of dialogues for each character. One of the things that makes a movie memorable are the quotable lines within. This movie is full of them. Some of the most memorable lines are those of Robert Downey Jr, Tom Cruise, and Jack Black. The script is definitely not for children under the age of 13 as some of it can be quite graphic. If you’ve seen any of Jack Black’s prior flicks, you’d get the idea.

‘Tropic Thunder’ is a movie that would appeal to those who enjoy parodies of life. Although the circumstances surrounding the movie are not totally realistic, it is entertaining to see Ben Stiller’s directing methods create a situation where movies could possibly emulate real life.

David Starsky (Ben Stiller) is, at least in his own eyes, a super cop. He narrates his own life with a sort of grim, noir commentary and takes pleasure in being an officer of the law…one of the good guys. Ken Hutchinson (Owen Wilson), often called ‘Hutch’, is the exact opposite. Ending up as partners, they must resolve their differences and work together to take down the drug czar Reese Feldman (Vince Vaughn) using intel and help from their informant, Huggy Bear (Snoop Dogg).

I was never a super-huge fan of the show, as I only ever saw reruns when I was a kid. Once I reached college age, though, I started consuming some media I missed when I was too young to appreciate it, and Starsky and Hutch was one of the shows I started getting into.

First of all, the show isn’t really anything like this movie so it’s no use really comparing the two. One is mostly serious, one is pretty much a parody of the buddy-cop genre. With that fact kept firmly in mind, I must say the film was extremely successful with what it set out to do.

Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller, love ‘em or hate ‘em, do what they do best in this movie – which is to butt heads for comedic effect. They are, to me, a modern day Abbot and Costello and I thoroughly enjoy every movie I’ve seen them in together.

The movie isn’t too long, running at only 95 minutes or so, and that is just enough length for a movie like this. It’s not overly ambitious, but it’s a lot of fun to watch the interactions between Starsky and Hutch or really any of the characters in this film.

There are some cool car chase sequences in the film, making use of the Ford Gran Torino that is pretty much the flagship image of this movie and of the television show.

Overall, there’s not much to complain about here unless you don’t like the kind of humor that comprises the entirety of this flick. If so, you picked the wrong movie to watch.

Oh, and the Will Ferrell cameo is HILARIOUS. (Carmen Elektra, Brande Roderick and Amy Smart didn’t hurt, either…)

JOE Rating: ★★★★★

For the first time in a long time America has a national enemy who has one face and is in a known location. A guy who threatens to blow up Washington, D.C. and even has his marketing department create animated videos depicting what that carnage may look like.

Unfortunately the propaganda videos don’t depict congressmen melting away in the nuclear attack, Raiders of the Lost Ark style. If they did it would probably garner some American support for North Korea.

On a side note to North Korea, give us some warning before this nuclear holocaust so we can get Dorothy’s ruby red slippers out of Smithsonian ahead of time. You can have congress, but those slippers really are important to our heritage. We’ll take them to Idaho or somewhere for safekeeping.

For more than 10 years our national enemy has been a shadowy doctrine closely associated with Middle Eastern countries and Islam. But now we have an actual dude, not an ideology manifested in crowds of chanting protesters burning our flags or a bunch of bearded a-holes crouched down in caves somewhere recording their sermons on 15-year-old Handycams.

Yes, we have a real guy. And it turns out he’s fat and weird looking, like most of America’s enemies. He is parody from the Ben Stiller film “Tropic Thunder” – if you haven’t seen it you should. Ben Stiller is one of the most underrated comedic performers of our generation. Tropic Thunder and The Heartbreak Kid were criminally underrated movies.

So what’s my take on this geopolitical situation? What insight does a guy who lives in South Carolina and loves eating at Chipotle have to convey about the hair-trigger situation on the Korean Peninsula? What can a guy who just yesterday was yelling at a complete stranger through the windshield of his Chevy Tahoe because the other guy didn’t see the red light had turned to green for nearly five seconds? Nothing, really. But there is an Internet meme I saw a few years ago that has stayed with me.

The great Alec Baldwin turns 55 years old today, and in attempting to cook up a proper tribute to hi

The great Alec Baldwin turns 55 years old today, and in attempting to cook up a proper tribute to him, we realized that his is a body of work less about hours than moments, less about films or shows than particular scenes. His career trajectory has been an unusual one: though he was initially pegged as a marquee leading man, he never quite found success as one. The good stuff came later, when he reinvented himself as a character actor, the kind of gunslinger who could parachute in for a supporting role, crush it in a couple of scenes, and slip out the back door. So to mark his 55 years, we’ve rounded up our ten favorite Alec Baldwin scenes, from film and television, for your consideration.

“Always be closing.” (Glengarry Glen Ross, 1992)

The king mother of all great Alec Baldwin scenes came fairly early in his career, with a one-scene role in James Foley’s electrifying film adaptation of David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Glengarry Glen Ross. It was the only new scene Mamet wrote for the adaptation (which is otherwise, with a few minor exceptions, pretty much the same script as the play), perhaps to set the scene and the tone, perhaps merely to get the rather short play up to feature length. When the film came out in 1992, it was a surprise to see Baldwin in such a small part — albeit in such a distinguished cast — because he was still considered a leading man (this was only two years after The Hunt for Red October). But in that once scene, Baldwin showed a power and brute force only suggested in his earlier films, mouthing some of the endlessly quotable script’s most famous lines and hinting at the kind of work that would become his bread and butter in the years to come.

“I am God.” (Malice, 1993)

Baldwin had top billing in Malice, the twisty thriller from director Harold Becker and writers Aaron Sorkin and Scott Frank, but his most iconic moment was the one closest to the Glengarry speech a year earlier — and while it’s always tricky to guess who wrote what in a collaborative situation, the Mamet-esque style of Sorkin’s early work (and its resemblance to his later barnburners) makes this speech’s author pretty easy to pin down. The question, being asked at an inquest into cocky doctor Baldwin’s malpractice suit, is whether he has a God complex. He gives an answer. Boy, does he ever.

Introducing Dignam (The Departed, 2006)

The Departed was Baldwin’s second time working with Martin Scorsese (he also does a memorable turn in The Aviator), and he fits easily into the film’s vast ensemble cast. It’s not a showy role — he’s got a few scenes and several good lines (including a thumbs-up for the Patriot Act that’s as funny as Jack Donaghy’s conservatism, given what we know about the actor’s politics). Many of them come in this brief scene, one where most of the dialogue is handled by Mark Wahlberg’s Dingnam. But their early back-and-forth is priceless, and the unforced sound of those chuckles at the end of the scene make us suspect that Baldwin’s closing lines were ad-libbed.

Car crash (State and Main, 2000)

When Baldwin and David Mamet reunited for the 2000 moviemaking comedy State and Main, the actor’s best moment wasn’t a lengthy monologue, but a line with three simple words. It comes from the mouth of Bob Barrenger, the leading man with an unfortunate taste for jailbait — which is how he finds himself in a crashing car with a very young girl (Julia Stiles). When he emerges, well, his reaction to the situation is admirably Zen-like.

Shangri-La (The Cooler, 2004)

Baldwin got his first and (so far) only Oscar nomination, as Best Supporting Actor, for his outstanding turn in Wayne Kramer’s 2003 drama The Cooler. It’s a difficult character to play — he’s ostensibly the antagonist, a cold, ruthless pit boss who has kept our hero (William H. Macy’s title character) in a kind of indentured servitude for years. But he also represents a dying breed of Sinatra-style Vegas men, as seen in this scene, where a total renovation of his casino is unveiled to him by the snide new kid on the block (Ron Livingtson).

Canteen Boy and the Scoutmaster (Saturday Night Live, 1994)

Baldwin has hosted Saturday Night Live 16 times (more than any other performer), first in 1990 and most recently in 2011. The explanations for his durability on the show are multifold: he’s versatile, he can do impressions, he’s funny, he’s got a sense of humor about himself, and — perhaps most importantly for an SNL host — he’s up for anything. Exhibit A: the manner in which he throws caution to the wind and goes all out for this notorious sketch from a 1994 appearance, as an amorous Scoutmaster with eyes for Adam Sandler’s “Canteen Boy.”

Schweddy Balls (Saturday Night Live, 1998)

But Baldwin’s finest (and most iconic) SNL moment came in a 1998 Christmas show, when he played a guest on their faux-NPR talk show “Delicious Dish.” The man’s name was Pete Schweddy. You know the rest.

Therapy, Jack Style (30 Rock, 2008)

Baldwin won two Emmys and three Golden Globes for playing Master of the Universe Jack Donaghy on 30 Rock, and deservedly so; the combination of the show’s smart writing and Baldwin’s savvy playing transformed what could have been a broad stereotype into a funny, beloved character. Most of his work on the show was of the team-player vintage (he could bounce around the dialogue with Fey or Krakowski like a champ), but his single best scene of the series was one where he took most of the roles himself: a loopy, hilarious therapy session with Tracy Jordan/Morgan.

Wedding Toast (Along Came Polly, 2004)

Look, there’s no use pretending that Along Came Polly is one of Baldwin’s best films, or even most accomplished performances. But there’s just something about the deep voice and wildly inappropriate manner he adopts as Stan Indursky, boss to Ben Stiller’s leading character, that remains in the memory far longer than this forgettable 2004 comedy.

Opening narration (The Royal Tenenbaums, 2002)

As we’ve seen throughout this rundown, Baldwin’s bass voice is one of the best in the business, so it seems appropriate to close out with a scene that he improved greatly without even appearing onscreen. As the narrator of Wes Anderson’s 2002 masterpiece The Royal Tenenbaums, he helps early on to establish the filmmaker’s unique world; he’s our storyteller and confidante, almost whispering the family’s secrets and preparing us for the chapters ahead.

Those are our favorite Baldwin scenes — what are yours?

Starring: Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Danny Glover, Bill Murray
Narrated by: Alec Baldwin

I first watched The Royal Tenenbaums on a 14-hour plane ride from LA to Japan in early 2002. I was 11 years old, almost 12, and I did not care for it, so I went back to watching Rat Race and Ocean’s Eleven on a loop for the rest of the flight.

Revisiting it now, 11 years later, I can say it is probably Wes Anderson’s finest achievement yet. I’m glad I saw this after Moonrise Kingdom, because where that film failed, this one excels.

Moonrise’s characters were cold, detached and way too offbeat, making them nearly impossible to relate to. I could empathize with the Tenenbaums, who had weight and humanity but still retained Anderson’s trademark quirky traits and sense of humor. Consistently funny, surprisingly moving and featuring a fantastic cast where Huston and Hackman stand out, The Royal Tenenbaums is a great film that I can picture myself watching every now and then.

I’m convinced I used to be either Jewish or Irish in a past life, because nothing does it for me qui

I’m convinced I used to be either Jewish or Irish in a past life, because nothing does it for me quite like a stereotypically cranky dude. You know the type; the kind of guy that is always on the back foot, gets out on the wrong side of the bed every damn day, is surly about everything, even rainbows and morning dew (especially rainbows and morning dew) and who feels like constantly yelling is the best way to make a point or make no point at all, just as long as he’s being heard. The blanket term I use to describe them is “Shouty Jews”. I don’t think that’s racist.

When I think about the person I want to fall in love with, along with “funny”, “loyal”, “generous of spirit” and “good lookingish but with a tubby belly and hairy chest”, “grumpy” is definitely a high priority on my list of musts. I just really want to be one of those old couples that doesn’t have an inside voice; where instead of talking to each other we’re just yelling, like George Constanza’s parents. There’s something beautifully safe and comfortable about being complaining loudly with and at the one you love, and I think if I ever had to be with some positive-thinking feel-gooder (think Alec Baldwin on Friends) I’d bald prematurely from stress.

Anyway here are my top 5 cranky dudes that make me want to get happy in my pants, Jewish or otherwise:

Jake Johnson

Joe Seer / Shutterstock.com

Jake is typecast as a neurotic, surly type with a reluctant puppy dog inside, and I’ll be eternally in love with him as Nick on New Girl. ALL NICK DOES IS JUST SHOUT ABOUT AND AT EVERYTHING. It’s so sexy, especially because he’s such a bullheaded stick-in-the-mud who hates practically everything, in other words, the perfect concoction of my favorite things. Nick doesn’t back down, even when he’s wrong or the argument is really, really stupid. This shows resolve and loyalty; Nick is going down with the ship no matter how ridiculous that might be, and I love him for it. Not to mention Jake’s oafishly handsome, punched-sideways nose. Swoon.

Charlie Day

DFree / Shutterstock.com

Charlie has one of those sexy scratchy voices that suits yelling everything perfectly (like he’s a veteran yeller and his vocal chords have been irreparably scratched by his constant noise making). It helps that he is a tiny little man; it makes all the shouting endearingly neurotic rather than terrifying, as it might be on a larger man. I’d like a mini-Charlie that I could carry around in the palm of my hand, and set on the desk at AT&T to do my dirty work when I’m mad at the staff for being incompetent.

Chris Messina

DFree / Shutterstock.com

Chris Messina doesn’t always yell, but when he does, there isn’t a dry seat in the house. He’s got more of a brooding Italian vibe as Danny Castellano in The Mindy Project that might be more docile that the loud ranters on this list, but that doesn’t make him any less lunatic. Danny just doesn’t like stuff, period, and I hope this is exactly what Chris Messina is like in real life, because I’ve already mentally married him and at a wedding that he hated, while my Greek family and his Italian family waved their fists at each other across the church’s aisle during the ceremony.

Ben Stiller

Helga Esteb / Shutterstock.com

Ben Stiller is the original Shouty Jew as far as I’m concerned, probably because he’s known for playing constantly peeved, shouty roles, and also because he is actually Jewish. He also happens to be very, very chiselled and good looking (those baby blues!). I fell in love with him at the tender age of 12 in There’s Something About Mary, even though I didn’t quite get the bit about Mary’s hair (although the part where the dog flies out the window still makes me laugh uncontrollably), because nothing ever went right for poor old Ted, as nothing has gone right for any Ben Stiller character to date.

Dylan Moran

Dylan Moran

God the Irish just do grumpy well. As Bernard in Black Books, the constantly frazzled, vaguely slapstick, always loudly complaining Moran is absolutely delightful. A modern day Basil Fawlty, with the good looks of a naughty little street urchin. I’d love to slap Dylan Moran in the face mid-rant, and have him just continue on without missing a breath, save for a thrown-in “stupid woman!” mid-sentence, post-slap. [tc-mark]
