Well, it has certainly been a crazy couple of weeks. MAGGIE’S HEAD First of all, let’s talk about Ma

Well, it has certainly been a crazy couple of weeks.

MAGGIE’S HEAD

First of all, let’s talk about Maggie’s head. Two weeks ago at her 2 month well baby appointment, the pediatrician noted that the soft spot on the top of Maggie’s head felt smaller than it should. Her exact words were “Do not panic. I will tell you if/when you need to panic”, but to be on the safe side, she sent us for an ultrasound to get a better idea of what was going on since the ultrasound would be a lot more exact than just her touch. So I didn’t think much of it, and we scheduled an appointment the next day at Children’s Hospital to get it done. Needless to say, Maggie did not like having the lady squeeze gel onto her head and roll the wand around on it.

The next day, we got a call from the pediatrician’s office confirming that, yes, her soft spot is extremely narrow, but it’s still open. They were also worried about the possibility of it closing way way sooner than it should, so they told us to take her to get her head X-rayed so that they could see the bone structure of her skull. The nurse that I spoke to was very matter-of-fact and very calm and very helpful with answering my questions about where we needed to go. I called Children’s, found out that we didn’t need an appointment for X-rays, and thought that we’d just go the next day.

THEN I got off the phone and googled “soft spot closing early” and FREAKED THE EFF OUT. Terms like “severe mental retardation” and “surgery in the first year of life to relieve the pressure” were mentioned, among other equally scary things. Fifteen minutes later, Mike was pulling in the driveway from work and I was on my way down the steps to meet him with Maggie in tow. We made the drive in record time, did the whole fill-out-the-paperwork dance, and waited our turn.

Maggie liked the X-ray even less than the ultrasound. And it broke my heart to see her thrashing around on a big slab of metal with the protective pad over the rest of her body while three people tried to keep her calm and get all of the pictures they needed. It turns out that, for now, everything is OK. They’ll just have to keep an eye on her head measurements to make sure it’s growing the way it should and that the soft spot isn’t closing prematurely. So although it could be worse, I get that nervous fluttery feeling inside when I think about it and start to imagine what will happen at her next appointment if her head hasn’t grown.

DATE NIGHT

At the end of that week was our 10 year anniversary. Mike and I went out alone for the first time for a few hours while Mike’s sister watched Maggie. It was such a weird feeling for both of us to be out without the baby, and we spent a lot of the time talking about her and missing her, but it was nice to have some alone time with Mike outside of the house.

DAYCARE

Last Monday was my last day of maternity leave. We had decided to start Maggie in daycare that day and Mike took off work so that we could both take her, get her settled, and get our crying out of the way without having to rush off to work. We had a ton of errands to run for the American Cancer Society benefit that we do, so it worked out well that we kept busy while she was there so that we weren’t tempted to just sit in the parking lot and talk ourselves out of going back in to get her.

Daycare has worked out pretty well. We really like the staff and the facility. It’s very clean and they’re very organized and, most importantly, we’re comfortable with the care that she’s getting. The infant room is segregated from the other kids and the adults either have to take their shoes off prior to entering or wear booties over their shoes to keep the carpet as clean as possible for the kids that are crawling. Maggie’s in with 5 other kids, roughly 4-10 months old, so she’s the youngest.

Last Wednesday when I got there to pick her up in the afternoon, I saw that her crib had been moved from one side of the room to another. I asked about it and was told that she and the girl in the crib next to her were “talking” and waking each other up during naptime so they separated them. Yes, my 2 month old daughter got in trouble on her third day of daycare. For talking. I can only imagine what the teenage years will bring!

MAKING IT ALL WORK

We seem to have a pretty good schedule figured out for the mornings, and Maggie was very cooperative last week by staying asleep until WE were ready for her to get up. I get up and get showered, dressed, and dry my hair. Mike gets up and gets in the shower while I finish getting ready. I get Maggie up, change her diaper, and get her dressed. Mike starts to feed her while I get my lunch packed, and then I sit with them for a few minutes until it’s time for me to leave. Mike drops her off at daycare since he typically doesn’t leave the house until an hour after I do, so that’s one less hour she has to be there and can be with one of us instead.

She’s exhausted by the time she gets home. There’s a lot more for her to look at during the day now than there is at home and a lot more activity and it really wears her out. She’s been napping a little better at daycare than she was at home, and her caretakers are amazed that they can just lay her down in the crib and she’ll fall asleep since there are other, older, kids there that are so resistant to sleeping in a crib and have to be in a swing to fall asleep. I think I can honestly say that she gets her ability to sleep anywhere from me!

Mike and I don’t eat dinner until we put Maggie to bed at night. She’s been ready for her last bottle and to fall asleep by 7:00 each night, so we only have an hour and a half to spend with her before she conks out and I don’t want to waste that time eating dinner. While I was off, I spent a few Saturdays cooking in bulk and freezing meals, and that has worked out incredibly well. It seemed to cost an arm and a leg at the grocery store at the time, even though I would buy meat and the more expensive things when they were on sale. But the extra expense upfront has been well worth the time saved each night now. We’re eating a home-cooked meal and not wasting a ton of time cooking and cleaning up. And it should save some time at the grocery store now each week. Once we near the end of these meals—I made enough to last us through January—I’ll have to devote some time once or twice a month to stocking up, but it’s so worth it.

I’m also trying to get in the habit of laying out Maggie’s clothes for the week, and also my own, on Sunday nights, so that there are a few less things to think about in the morning during the week.

RETURNING TO WORK

Not as bad as I expected, but still tough leaving Maggie each day. I was overwhelmed at first, forgetting passwords and where to find certain files that I needed. But within a few hours I had gotten back into the swing of things and it was like I had never left. And even though I’m busy all day, the time seems to drag, which it never did before. Now I’m counting the hours until I can see Maggie again.

THE BENEFIT

Most of you know that Mike and I run a benefit each year for the American Cancer Society. It was this past Saturday, so we had all of the preparations for that combined with me returning to work falling in the same week—needless to say, it was a crazy week! This year’s event was fantastic. We had over 200 people, which is more than we had ever had before. We ended up getting some great silent auction items which brought in a lot of money. Donations are still coming in from people that couldn’t attend but want to contribute. We’ll be over $8000 this year once it’s all said and done, and that amazes me. With as tough as things are financially for so many, it’s great that people are able to open their wallets and contribute to such a good cause. Thank you to everyone that came to the benefit or donated online—we really appreciate it. And if you haven’t donated but have a few extra bucks that you’d be willing to part with, please visit our website.

The benefit has gotten a little bigger each year, and I’ve slowly been letting go of my need to be a control freak about how things happen that night. And, this year, with Maggie added into the mix, I think I realized that I can’t do it all. I tried to sell raffle tickets along with one of our friends that we recruited for the job, but my mind wasn’t on it. Maggie hung out in the Baby Bjorn for awhile, but she got really hot in it which made her fussy. And since she was awake later than usual, she needed an extra bottle. So I had to give up on the tickets, grab my sister-in-law to fill in for me, and take Maggie into a side room to settle her down and feed her. Mike was concerned about her being OK, so he was leaving his post by the door and having his sister’s friends fill in for him. Without the help of Mike’s sister, her friends, and our friend Jen, the night would have been chaos. Maggie was really good the whole night, smiling at everyone and wide awake early on, and then falling asleep in her chair for about an hour. But she woke up cranky at 11:30 and I knew she had had enough. We had gotten a room at the hotel a block away to make it easier at the end of the night, and it was definitely worth it. Mike and I took her back to the room and I stayed with her while he went back to clean up.

MAGGIE’S FIRST COLD

So many people have told me that daycares are cesspools of germs and illness, but this one gets blamed on me. I woke up with a cold last Monday. Bad timing with all we had going on last week, but I don’t have room to complain since I went all of last winter cold-free and flu-free. It got worse as the week progressed, and I started to lose my voice on Thursday. Saturday night at the hotel, I noticed that Maggie seemed to be a little congested, and by Sunday night it was definitely a cold. On Monday Mike decided to work from home and keep Maggie home from daycare so that he could keep an eye on her to make sure she didn’t get worse. Technically, she could have gone since she didn’t have a fever, but he felt better knowing that she was being closely monitored. Other than the congestion, she was fine all day.

Monday night she went to bed at her usual time, but woke up 2 hours later because she was so congested. We put her in her chair and she fell asleep—I think the little bit of incline helped everything drain and made it easier for her to breathe. She slept in our room last night because we expected to be up a lot, but she slept pretty soundly until 5:00 this morning. We suctioned her, fed her, and she fell asleep in her crib. When I left the house a little before 7:00, Mike wasn’t sure how the day would play out, but she ended up sleeping until 8:00 and then he took her in to daycare—she was smiling and giggling and fine except for a little congestion. Same for today, so hopefully she’ll be back to normal in a day or so.

Well, that sums up my life for the past 2 weeks or so. Now I’m excited to have 4 days off work to spend with Maggie (and Mike too, of course)!

On Nov. 14, Surfrider Foundation’s Humboldt Chapter celebrated our first year of “reconstitution” with a few hundred of our friends in the Arcata Theatre Lounge.

While the chapter has been around for nearly 20 years, a drop in activity necessitated a concerted effort to get things going again in 2008. And get going they did! We’ve doubled our memberships, increased our funds tenfold, rebuilt the Jetty shower, cleaned beaches and a piece of U.S. Hwy. 101, promoted reusable bags and water bottles, and generally reached out on behalf of the North Coast’s ocean, waves and beaches.

In the works are improvements at Moonstone Beach and Camel Rock, as well as the establishment of a water quality lab dedicated to ocean testing. None of this would have happened or be happening without the phenomenal support of the local community members and businesses who’ve offered money, venues, raffle and auction prizes, and volunteer labor.

So, from Surfrider Humboldt, THANK YOU for your contribution. With your help, our chapter raised over $3,500 in a single evening. Not only was the event financially lucrative, but the joy of so many families – surfing and other – having fun at our event helps ensure future generations will continue the work of protecting the North Coast. Thanks again for helping make it all happen!

And an extra big huge thank you to the folks at GREENHOUSE BOARDSHOP and Humboldt Baykeeper. Both have been absolutely key to our success. Please express your appreciation if you’re around Baykeeper’s Old Town office and please do your holiday shopping at Greenhouse!

We’re bucking holiday tradition this year… For years we’ve headed across the street to James’

We’re bucking holiday tradition this year…

For years we’ve headed across the street to James’ parents’ house for Thanksgiving dinner. It’s always felt like a fair trade. They’d provide the lovely dining room (ours is a teensy home office) and we’d provide the turkey.

But this year I’ve been relieved of my turkey cooking duties. I’ll still make the sweet sausage and sage stuffing and fresh cranberry/orange relish that I grew up on. But no bird. Boston Market has taken my place.

It’s a rite of passage I suppose. I recall making our first bird in a kitchen about the size of a yoga mat when James and I were just newlyweds. He’s still padding around in the sweat jacket he wore that year, which makes me smile. I suppose I can let the bird go.

I’ll have more time for my new baby—my blog. Knowing there are oodles of holiday performances out there that you need to know about, sleeping in just doesn’t sound like much fun. So I’ll spend the next few days hunting and gathering.

Hopefully you already have a copy of the current issue of Raising Arizona Kids magazine, so you can check the calendar section early and often for fun things to do with your friends and family during the holiday season.

But for my fellow performing arts lovers, I’ll be sharing a series of blogs on upcoming performances in three categories (one per day)-dance, music and theater. (Don’t ask me what order they’ll run in—a girl’s gotta have some whimsy.)

For today, I’ll share some ways you can celebrate the holiday season while giving a little something to others…

Note: Oops alert! Date of original post included wrong date for Ballet Arizona event. Correct date appears below. If you have an earlier copy of this blog, please stuff it with your turkey, and remember: What happens in the holiday blogosphere stays in the holiday blogosphere. Thanks –Lynn

Arizona Jewish Theatre Company. Online auction to benefit their education department. Auction runs through December 11th—which means you can enjoy holiday shopping from home and help Valley kids enjoy great theater!

Ballet Arizona. Nutcracker party to benefit their education, outreach and performance projects. Saturday, December 5th, from 10am to 2:30pm at the Camelback Inn. Enjoy a lovely luncheon, dance performance and shopping in Nutcracker Village. You can also donate to support their Nutcracker Angel Night for underprivileged children.

Childsplay. Buy a teddy bear (donated by Build-a-Bear) sporting a handcrafted sweater by Tempe fiber artist Sonja Faeroy Saar to benefit their Benjamin Fund, which provides free tickets to organizations working with underprivileged youth or youth with disabilities.

Free Arts of Arizona. Buy gift bows (made of authentic movie trailers) while supplies last at Harkins Theatres to benefit arts programs for abused, homeless and at-risk youth.

Greasepaint Youtheatre. Free performance by Greasepaint LIVE troupe with holiday bazaar featuring local artists, homemade treats and more to benefit the John Cannon Memorial Scholarship Fund. Wednesday, December 16th, from 6-8pm (show at 7pm). Also, receive $2 off your ticket price to Oliver! on Saturday, December 5th at 2pm when you donate an item for the St. Mary’s Food Bank holiday drive.

Note: Always call and/or click ahead for event details and ticketing information, since some events do not offer tickets at the door (and the brevity of blogs makes it impossible to list every detail). Thanks!

If I’ve overlooked a family-friendly art, dance, music or theater event with a “giving back” component this holiday season, please comment below and share what you know.

I look forward to seeing you Thursday with some musings on the things I am most thankful for. If you still have bird duty, just come back and visit after you’ve finished your pecan or pumpkin pie.

I’m always thankful for our one-of-a kind readers…

One of the first questions I ask organizations that I work with is “What is your brand’s

One of the first questions I ask organizations that I work with is “What is your brand’s vision?” I ask this question because if the organization has a vision for its brand, then I can begin to understand where and how I can help them. Unfortunately, most of the time, I get a blank stare in response to my question, or something along the lines of “Well, we aren’t really sure.”

Not having a brand vision but trying to do marketing and brand building is like jumping into a car and driving to go somewhere without knowing what or where the destination is. How do you know if you are headed in the right direction? If you don’t know where you are going, how do you even know that a car can get you there?

Before an organization can start to tackle challenges like growing a brand with existing customers, extending a brand into new categories or driving awareness and interest with new customers, it needs to be clear on its long-term brand vision. The brand vision is the destination for the brand that the organization should be striving to reach. As a result, a well-defined vision helps the organization narrow its focus to the critical objectives, strategies, and tactics that will ultimately help the organization achieve what it is trying to accomplish. Additionally, when it is communicated, embraced, and reinforced in the organization, it is a valuable tool that aligns all of the brand stakeholders to working towards the same goals.

The components of a brand vision are in theory straightforward, but can be very challenging to formulate and assemble into a complete brand vision. The components are:

The brand’s core essence. This is what the brand ultimately stands for or its ‘reason for being’

The key functional and emotional benefits that the brand provides. (For more detail on benefits, check out Marketing & Branding Mistake to Avoid #1: Communicating Features Instead of Benefits)

What the brand will be known for in the future. This is also where critical goals and metrics should be incorporated such as, “Brand X will be a Million Dollar brand by 2015″, or “Brand Y will be present in half of the households in the U.S. by 2020″.

The brand character. This is the personality of the brand.

The components are challenging to develop because ideally an organization should designate a group of internal brand stakeholders (a brand team) to devote a great deal of time, thought, and discussion to make the vision as strong as possible. Typically organizations do not prioritize brand vision development for these reasons. However, if an organization can devote resources to and prioritize the development of a vision, it will be in a much stronger, more productive, and successful position moving forward. The resulting brand vision becomes a powerful guide post that aligns the organization, making the marketing decisions and challenges it faces much easier to navigate because the organization knows where it wants to go.

Adsense is regarded as one of the strongest tool in a domain publisher’s arms depot.
It enables an individual to monetize their sites simply. If used correctly, it can generate a particularly enormous and healthy earnings for them.
However if you aren’t using them correctly and just maximizing the earnings you squeeze from it, you are basically leaving plenty of money on the table. How you can start getting paid with Adsense can be done simply and quickly.
You’ll be dazzled at the results you’ll be getting in such a brief period of time. There are a lot of folk given the present of being good with words.
Why not make it work in the kind of way that you’re going to be earning some additional money in the middle. There are really 3 steps to put into mind before you start writing your advertisements and having an efficient Adsense. Take note that search engines are taking pride in the standard of their articles and what you will be writing should keep up with their demands. This is where all that you have done at first will go to and this is also where they’re going to prove their worth to you.

The correct positioning of your advertisements should be done with care. According to analyze, the one place that surfers look first when they visit a certain site is the top left. Perhaps it is perhaps because some of the most helpful search engine results are at the top of all other rankings. So visitors have a tendency to look in that same place when browsing thru other sites. By knowing these strategies and working them to your benefit, you may realize that you are going to be getting 3 times more than others who have been formerly doing what they are doing. You should be aware oft his capacity and make the best of it as it is one tough tool that may help you in finding out which adverts are performing best. This way, you can tune up your Adsense advertisements and focus more about the ones being paid a visit to the most instead of people who are being ignored. The explanation behind this is they are recognized as an advert and advert are rarely of any interest that is why folks ignore them.

To truly start earning money with Adsense, you need to have a definite target what you needed to achieve and how you may go about achieving them. Spare some time, even an hour, making changes to the Adsense ads on your sites to quickly trigger your Adsense earnings. Give it a try and you wouldn’t regret having gotten into Adsense in the 1st place.

Overloaded prisons, hardly any facilities and bad medical care. This situation affects a lot of young Indonesian kids, who ended up behind bars because they had no choice but to steal in order to survive. Today, we have some great news: with your help the budget of the Better life behind bars project has been reached!

The Anak Asuh Foundation is now able to provide the kids with new books and vocational training, and the prison hospital will receive new beds and equipment!

Besides a large number of Players and offline supporters, five students of Asian Trade Management contributed in a great way. Cynthia, Jenny, Amy, Sharon and Ying raised over 1,000 euros by throwing a fundraising party. ‘If we’re doing this, we’re doing it right’, is what they must have thought. So why not arrange one of Amsterdam’s most famous night clubs, Escape, as their party palace?

With great performances of various DJs, more than 150 people danced the night away. Traditional Indonesian performers made sure the night had a real Asian vibe to it. With a total of 1,105 euros raised, the girls can be proud of organising such a successful evening.

To everyone that contributed in some way, thanks a lot!

St. Petersburg, Fl

The sun opened its eyes over the bay today to over 400 women (and some men) lined up to race for the inaugural Women’s Running Magazine 5k and Half Marathon. Over $1 million was raised in entry fees. The proceeds of this race went to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, an organization that raises awareness as well as money to fund the research that fights blood cancers.

Lining up at the starting line with all of those women was powerful to me. There is something to be said for physical effort; it is a display of character like no other, completely immune to the falsities and facades of everyday interaction. Running with all of these women and being among those that were sweating and pushing hard at 7:30 a.m. reminded me of the power of mental strength coupled with physical strength.

Congratulations to everyone that ran in the race and those that supported the runners. It was amazing to see so many people pushing the limits of physical boundaries this morning under the Florida sunrise.

This seemed a lot of money to me when i bought this, but it really is worth every penny. I wear this everyday for work and i think it may last forever! lol.

This set is designed to define, contour and enhance your eyes. In this set is Benefits best-selling concealer in boi-ing (full size £15.50), alabaster pink eyeshadow, cocoa shimmer contour shadow, rich chocolate-brown liner/shadow (i also use this to define my eyebrows), mini make up brushes (full size brushes around £15 each) and a step by step guide on how to achieve the look.

It really is a fantastic buy, the packaging is small and convenient to fit in your handbag, the handy little make up brushes are fab as well because you can apply on the go. The colours are really nice and stay on all day and really do make your eyes stand out but still neutral enough to wear for everyday. It’s not really a look i would rock on a night out but it’s definitely a pretty everyday look. It’s the perfect little kit for the entire eye, once youve applied this, all you need is mascara and your ready to go!

Jiorle’s has helped design and create an ornament that goes beyond that of the holiday season. This ornament is adorned with the timeless image of Phillipsburg High School. These shatterproof ornaments will not break the bank this holiday shopping season at only $5.00 an ornament or $7.00 if you want the optional brass stand. The best part is that by purchasing an ornament, you will be giving back because the proceeds go to S.A.D.D.

S.A.D.D. is an organization designed to give students the best prevention tools to deal with all the trials and tribulations of being a young adult in the 21st century.
For many seniors, the caring for an animals helps maintain self-esteem. The idea that they are still

For many seniors, the caring for an animals helps maintain self-esteem. The idea that they are still able to help another living being makes a difference. The benefit of the pet/owner bond is well documented. Yet when a senior begins to have mobility issues, a pet companion can become one of them. Whether you are an aging adult, or caring for one who has a pet, take the time to do a safety check. Is it difficult to clean the cat box? Does bending over and lifting it jeopardize safety? Does the animal respect the personal space of its owner or is there a tripping/falling hazard when the beloved pet wants to lovingly rub on weakened legs while its owner tries to move from room to room? Is the dog so large or energetic that it might knock over an unsteady owner? If any of those questions start to resonate with you, look for solutions. Perhaps the cat likes to climb and the box can be moved off the floor. Perhaps the dog can be taken for training classes to learn to avoid walkers and wheelchairs. Just saying, “Mom, the dog has to go,” may not be the answer. It’s certainly not the sensitive response. Take time to look for and discuss possible solutions. If they’re not available in the living situation you and your loved one are dealing with, then perhaps the pet can find a new home with a friend or relative and come for visits. Or, the “inside” cat can become an “outside” pet. Acknowledging the value of the relationship, even if the nature of it might need to change, will help make transitions more manageable.

An organization will not begin the transformation until it is aware that the quality of the product

An organization will not begin the transformation until it is aware that the quality of the product or service must be improved. Awareness comes about when an organization loses market share or realizes that quality and productivity go hand in hand. It also occurs if TQM is mandated by the customer or if management realizes that TQM is a better way to run business and compete in domestic and world markets.

Automation or other productivity enhancements might not help a corporation if it is unable to market its product or service because the quality is poor. The Japanese learned this fact from practical experience. They could sell their products only at ridiculously low prices, and even then it was difficult to secure repeat sales. Until recently, corporations have not recognized the importance of quality. However, a new attitude has emerged—quality first among the equals of cost and service—the customer wants value.

Quality and productivity are not mutually exclusive. Improvements in quality can lead directly to increased productivity and other benefits. The improved quality results in improvement in productivity, capacity, and profit. Many quality improvement projects are achieved with the same workforce, same overhead, and no investment in new equipment.

More and more corporations are recognizing the importance and necessity of quality improvement if they are to survive domestic and world-wide competition. Quality improvement is not limited to the conformance of the product or service to specifications; it also involves the inherent quality in the design of the system. The prevention of the product, service, and process problems is a more desirable objective than taking corrective action after the product is manufactured or a service rendered.

TQM does not occur overnight; there are no quick remedies. It takes a long time to build the appropriate emphasis and techniques into the culture. Over-emphasis on short term results and profits must be set aside so long-term planning and constancy of purpose will prevail.
