There is a lot of really interesting music bubbling up around the world, especially in the dance/electronic scene, and thankfully we all have the ability to hear despite miles of land separating everyone. England has been the base for a few new genres that have now spread elsewhere- bassline, dubstep, and funky. All these genre labels are pretty fluid- lots of mixing occurs between them all- but dubstep has a particular sound and style that has began to make it across the Atlantic to parts of the US. As a whole, I haven’t been a fan of how DJs mix it into their sets- its too slow for a heavy dance set- but when done well (as I’ve heard from others, at least), I think it can hit pretty hard. When Modeselektor came through to the 9:30 club (DC) a few weeks ago, they were really good at mixing dubstep-style sounds with dancier, faster electro. Other heavy hitters in the genre include Rusko, Chase & Status, Skream, and Benga, who’ve all cross-pollinated a bit, producing for Rihanna and Kid Sister, among others.

Kid Sister – Step feat. Estelle (produced by Rusko)

Benga – 26 Basslines

I’ve found that the more interesting stuff comes from the harder hip-hop background. There is a crazy collective of musicians from the US that are loosely based around the Wednesday night/downtown Los Angeles party Low End Theory. These cats are producing some really compelling music. Three of the best known emerging from that scene are Flying Lotus, Nosaj Thing, and 12th Planet. Flying Lotus and Nosaj Thing are more on the ephemeral, chopped-up Dilla style and 12th Planet keeps it heavy on the bass, but their unique approaches really make for some distinct new tunes. Other similar producers include Samiyam from Michigan and the Gaslamp Killer (also linked with Low End Theory- he slays it live).

Flying Lotus – Melt

Dave Nada – Apocalypse Theme (12th Planet Remix)

Samiyam – Super Chronzio Bros. 2

In addition to those 3, newcomer from the UK Hudson Mohawk drops some really chilled out bass on his song “Fuse” and Harmonic 313’s collaboration with Wiley is a good mix between both styles. Both of the latter tracks appear on Hudson’s BBC1 Essential Mix. Hudon and Flying Lotus have both released music on the legendary Warp Records.

It’s been a while since I’ve come across some music that I’ve really been stoked on. I’m a pretty open person and a music junkie, and in my opinion, 2009 has been a great year for music, especially hip hop. A lot of good things dropped this year, but nothing has really made me over the top pumped on what was going into my ears. I went to Toronto this weekend for a friends birthday and he hooked me up with a genre of music called “dubstep“. 15 minutes into chillin to this music and I was in love. Dubstep is a touch hard to explain. It’s instrumental, with samples here and there. Big ephasis on the beat. The beats are so tight in dubstep. I just can’t get over how amazing this music is. I’ve mostly been listening to an artist who calls himself Caspa, but if your really feelin this genre, also check out Benga, Rusko or Chase & Status. I’ve peeped them all and they all bring something sick to this unique area of music. My new love has become Dubstep!

Sean AKA Nordic Soul is the Decibel Festival Curator and Director, he is my good friend and one of the greatest contributors to Seattle’s thriving underground music community. This is a very insightful summary of electronic music in 2009 with his Top 15 list at the bottom as well:

From Sean:

Every year it’s part of my job at PlayNetwork to come up with a list of top albums and overall assessment of music trends for the year. Below is my brief review of what I felt was a pretty landmark year for electronic music in the US and in general. Barring any incredible releases over the next month, these are my picks for the year. Keep in mind this list is strictly made up of albums; not EPs, 12’s or remixes (i.e 95% of the electronic music I purchased this year).

2009 in Review : Binary Pop, Warp’s Legacy, Dub Mutations and the Return of Sexy Dance Music

2009 has been an incredibly innovative year in relation to music production. Artists like Animal Collective, Fever Ray, Royksopp and Moderat have proven once and for all that digital beats and electronic sound design can appeal to a pop audience that otherwise wouldn’t find themselves listening to “electronic music”.

This year also marks the 20 year anniversary of the greatest electronic music label (arguably greatest label) of all time, Warp Records, which has had an exceptional year across the board with strong indie releases from Grizzly Bear and Maximo Park as well as strong releases from their more obscure electronic artists like Tim Exile and Clark. Warp’s 20th anniversary box set is not only one of the best reviewed collections of they year, it’s also a brilliant testament to the label’s vast catalog of ground breaking artists (i.e. Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Jamie Lidell, Nightmares on Wax, Prefuse 73, Autechre, Broadcast, Plaid, Battles, Squarepusher, etc).

In addition, 2009 witnessed the rise of Dubstep as a respected genre in the US through acclaimed UK labels like Hyperdub (Burial, Kode9, Joker, Zomby, Flying Lotus) and Tectonic (2562, Martyn, DJ Pinch, Benga) both of whom continue to blur the boundaries between Grime, Dub, West Coast Hip Hop and Detroit Techno. With the avid support of tastemakers like BBC Radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbs and Low End Theory’s Daddy Kev (Alpha Pup Records) UK Dubstep and West Coast Glitch Hop / Hip Hop have both become quintessential styles on the electronic music frontline in the US. From Burning Man to this year’s Movement festival in Detroit, Dubstep and Glitch Hop have fully emerged in 2009 as a staple sound in North America.

Another emerging trend has been the Deep House and Tech House revival, which has been experiencing a resurgence the past few years as club-goers have tired of the heady, sterility of Minimal Techno and the frenetic, over the top sound of Electro House. Artists like Gui Boratto, Voodeux, Pezzner, Milton Jackson, Stimming, Mode D, Catz n Dogz, DJ T and Dixon have all helped in keeping underground dance music both sexy and musical.

Overall 2009 has been a phenomenal year for technologically driven music, proving that creativity is truly catching up with the tools used for musical expression in the digital age.

Here are my Top 15 albums of the year:

1. Animal Collective “Merriweather Post Pavilion” Domino Records

3. Moderat (aka Apparat & Modeselektor) “Moderat” Bpitch Control Records

4. Fever Ray “Fever Ray” Rabid Records

Casc si casc din nou. Clar da dependenta. Dar nu am vazut pe nimeni cascand. Casc din nou. E aproape 6 si mie-mi e somn. Rau.

Nici planeta.

Riversdale Mining Limited (ASX: RIV) and Tata Steel Limited are pleased to announce the approval of the approval of Stage 1 of the Benga Coal Project in the Tete Province of Mozambique.

Riversdale Mining Executive Chairman Mr Michael O’Keeffe said that the decision represented the official go-ahead for the company’s coal mining operations in Mozambique. Construction is expected to commence before year end upon receipt of final environmental approvals.

Following the review of the Feasibility Study by project partners Riversdale Mining (65%) and Tata Steel (35%), the project was approved by the joint venture company responsible for the Benga Coal Project.

The project approval involves the commitment of US$270 million (excluding working capital) to undertake the initial Stage 1 development of the Benga Coal Project. Stage 1 entails initial production of 5.3 million ROM tonnes per year to produce approximately 1.7Mtpa of high quality hard coking coal and 0.3Mtpa of export thermal coal.

Funding for Stage 1 of the project will be provided by Riversdale Mining and Tata Steel in their respective proportions from existing cash resources or any alternative means as appropriate. Riversdale Mining currently has A$268million cash to fund its share (US$175million) of the project.

“We are committed to bringing the Benga Coal Project into first production during 2010, and we will be supplying the world’s coking coal markets in 2011 initially through our relationship with project partner Tata Steel in India,” Mr O’Keeffe said.

Ok, so the last mix I made was so much fun, I thought I’d make another. My style is usually battle/scratch DJing, but this isn’t always something you can sit down and listen to.
That’s what I like about these 10 Minute Mixes, I can make something I’m really proud of, that I can enjoy listening to myself, because I never buy tunes I don’t like listening to.
This new one is more progressive than my last one. My last one was filled with wobbly bangers, full of big drops. I decided that to make a new one, I’d quite like to make more easy listening. Hopefully this will show my versatility, which is my main trait as a DJ, hence the scratch battling.
I see this new mix as a relaxing one, that you could almost drift off to on a lonely night. It does end with a bang though as I could not resist dropping “Fick” by Skream, immense tune.
The mix is mainly utilising Skream actually, I recently bought Skreamizm, Vol. 5, as well as his new 12″ single, “Burnin’ Up”.
It’s fair to say that this mix is massively influenced by Tempa, the record label Skream, Benga and Data are under. These are the three artists that this mix includes, not too varied I know, but it’s early days for my mixing as far as dubstep is concerned, so I don’t have an awful lot of vinyl in that respect.
So here is the bugger, my new mix, it’s my cleanest yet.

What do you think?

Its a remix by Rusko of the wicked UK funky tune by Attacca Pesante, “Make It Funky for Me”. The original is pure UK Funky and I am fan. Rusko has done a job on this one and put his own mark on this track, with wicked bass and love how he has chopped vocals but still left make it funky for me bringing the whole track together.

Attacca Pesante – Make It Funky For Me (Rusko Remix)

Then something new from Doorly, acting as the main course. Very excited to see some new remixes coming out from Doorly. This one is top draw a remix of “Bounce” by MSTRKRFT ft. NORE. I really love how cut up this track is and how there a load of electro beeps added too along with a beefy bassline. Doorly is on top form and I really can’t wait to see him DJ next month.

MSTRKRFT ft. NORE – Bounce (Doorly remix)

And for Desert today we have an absolute smasher from Joker & Ginz called Purple City. I liked Joker’s remix in the past and really like what he has done on his own. This tune is just big, I love all the synthy stuff he’s got going on and the little beeps with a heavy kicking bass is almost over bearing but works so well. You have to listen to this one loud.

Joker & Ginz – Purple City

As a little bonus, think of this as your coffee after your meal I’ve got a wicked Benga track, don’t think its new but I am only hearing it for the first time this week. I think this is a Skream remix. It pure dubstep, just melody surrounded by deep bass.

Benga – Skunk Tip (Skream remix)

P.S I think I may have been watching too much Masterchef

Niekwestionowani pionierzy dobustepowych brzmien zagrają 10 listopada, w sopockim klubie Sfinks.

Skream, nazywany cudownym dzieckiem rozpoczął swoją karierę dj’a i
Wspólnie wypracowali garażowe sound, a sety wydane w Big Apple, wykreowały i tym samym rozpoczęły nowy rozdział w dziedzinie dubstep’u.

Specjalnością Skream’a były głębokie, ciemne dubstep’owe brzmienia.

rozpoznawanym dub-stepowym hitem. www.myspace.com/skreamuk

Benga, to kolejne cudowne dziecko miasta Croydon. W wieku 14 lat rozpoczął świadomą działalność muzyczną. Pierwszym londyńskim miejscem, w jakim grał, był klub Forward. Debiutował tam również Skream.Jego ostatni album -”Diary of an Afro Warrior”, to fantastyczne, garażowe brzmienie dubstepu.

O gravão do dubstep?
