Dance in India covers a wide range of dance and dance theatre forms, from the ancient classical or t

Dance in India covers a wide range of dance and dance theatre forms, from the ancient classical or temple dance to folk and modern styles.
Three best-known deities, Shiva, Kali and Krishna, are typically represented dancing. There are hundreds of Indian folk dances such as Bhangra, Garba and special dances observed in regional festivals.India offers a number of classical Indian dance forms, each of which can be traced to different parts of the country. The presentation of Indian dance styles in film, Bollywood, has exposed the range of dance in India to a global audience.
Shaivites are those who worship the Lord Shiva. In “the lord of dance” are revealed both faces of dance – ‘lasya’ and ‘tandava’, of which all subsequent dance forms are offshoots. ‘Lasya’, the dance of aesthetic delight revealed beauty, grace, love and all tender aspects of existence. ‘Lasya’ is the mode that defined many of Shiva’s iconographic forms – Kalyana-Sundara, Vrashavahana, Yogeshvara, Katyavalambita, Sukhasanamurti, Vyakhyanamurti, Chinamudra, Anugrahamurti, and Chandrashekhara.

Devi, Shiva’s variously named consort, is alluded to have performed dance in her manifestations as Kali – Mahakali or Shamshana-Kali, and Bhairavi. Devi had many other forms, each representing a particular ‘bhava’. So did ten Mahavidyas and ‘Saptamatrikas’. Each of such forms was modeled using the dance-mode in which its characteristic ‘bhava’ transpired. Thus, in modeling Devi’s other forms, too, a similar dance-iconography was used.

Vaishnavite tradition

The dance style performed by Sri Krishna and 107 gopi’s in Vrindavan is called rasa-lila, and is considered as a form of devotional dance.

CHOLA’S WHO RULED SOUTH EAST ASIA
According to Tamil tradition, the old Chola country comprise

CHOLA’S WHO RULED SOUTH EAST ASIA

According to Tamil tradition, the old Chola country comprised the region that includes the modern-day Tiruchirapalli District and the Thanjavur District in Tamil Nadu. The river Kaveri and its tributaries dominate this landscape of generally flat country that gradually slopes towards the sea, unbroken by major hills or valleys. The river Kaveri, also known as Ponni (golden) river, had a special place in the culture of Cholas. The annual floods in the Kaveri marked an occasion for celebration, Adiperukku, in which the whole nation took part.

Kaverippattinam on the coast near the Kaveri delta was a major port town. Ptolemy knew of this and the other port town of Nagappattinam as the most important centres of Cholas. These two towns became hubs of trade and commerce and attracted many religious faiths, including Buddhism.Roman ships found their way into these ports. Roman coins dating from the early centuries of the common era have been found near the Kaveri delta.

The other major towns were Thanjavur, Uraiyur and Kudanthai, now known as Kumbakonam. After Rajendra Chola moved his capital to Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Thanjavur lost its importance. The later Chola kings moved around their capitals frequently and made cities such as Chidambaram, Madurai and Kanchipuram their regional capitals.

Nature of government
In the age of the Cholas, the whole of South India was, for the first time, brought under a single government, when a serious attempt was made to face and solve the problems of public administration. The Cholas’ system of government was monarchical, as in the Sangam age. However, there was little in common between the local chiefdoms of the earlier time and the imperial-like states of Rajaraja Chola and his successors.

The Chola Empire comprised the entire south Indian peninsula,DURING 9-1150 AD extending east to west from coast to coast, and bounded to the north by an irregular line along the Tungabhadra river and the Vengi frontier. Although Vengi had a separate political existence, it was closely connected to the Chola Empire and, for all practical purposes, the Chola dominion extended up to the banks of the Godavari river.Tanjavur, and later, Gangaikonda Cholapuram were the imperial capitals. However both Kanchipuram and Madurai were considered to be regional capitals, in which occasional courts were held. The king was the supreme commander and a benevolent dictator. His administrative role consisted of issuing oral commands to responsible officers when representations were made to him. A powerful bureaucracy assisted the king in the tasks of administration and in executing his orders. Due to the lack of a legislature or a legislative system in the modern sense, the fairness of king’s orders dependent on the goodness of the man and in his belief in Dharma—a sense of fairness and justice.

The Chola kings built temples and endowed them with great wealth.[8][98] The temples acted not only as places of worship but also as centres of economic activity, benefiting their entire community.

Local government

Every village was a self-governing unit. A number of villages constituted a larger entity known as a Kurram, Nadu or Kottram, depending on the area. A number of Kurrams constituted a valanadu. These structures underwent constant change and refinement throughout the Chola period

Justice was mostly a local matter in the Chola Empire; minor disputes were settled at the village level.Punishment for minor crimes were in the form of fines or a direction for the offender to donate to some charitable endowment. Even crimes such as manslaughter or murder were punished with fines. Crimes of the state, such as treason, were heard and decided by the king himself; the typical punishment in these cases was either execution or the confiscation of property.

The Chola Dynasty was a Dravidian Tamil dynasty that ruled primarily in southern India until the 13th century. The dynasty originated in the fertile valley of the Kaveri River. Karikala Chola was the most famous among the early Chola kings, while Aditya I, Parantaka I, Rajaraja Chola I, Rajendra Chola I, Rajadhiraja Chola, Virarajendra Chola, Kulothunga Chola I, Vikrama Chola and Kulothunga Chola III were notable emperors of the medieval Cholas.

The Cholas were at the height of their power continuously from the later half of the 9th century till the beginning of the 13th centuries. Under Rajaraja Chola I and his son Rajendra Chola I, the dynasty became a military, economic and cultural power in Asia.During the period 1010–1200, the Chola territories stretched from the islands of the Maldives in the south to as far north as the banks of the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh. Rajaraja Chola conquered peninsular South India, annexed parts of what is now Sri Lanka and occupied the islands of the Maldives. Rajendra Chola sent a victorious expedition to North India that touched the river Ganga and defeated the Pala ruler of Pataliputra, Mahipala. He also successfully invaded kingdoms of the Malay Archipelago as well as expanding the empire from coastal Burma to Vietnam.

The Chola tottered at the beginning of the thirteenth century and vanished with the rise of the Pandyas and the Hoysala.

The Cholas left a lasting legacy. Their patronage of Tamil literature and their zeal in building temples have resulted in some great works of Tamil literature and architecture.

The Chola kings were avid builders and envisioned the temples in their kingdoms not only as places of worship but also as centres of economic activity. They pioneered a centralised form of government and established a disciplined bureaucracy.

Yes, I was in Calcutta last week!

Although I don’t bring you food, I will have you know shukto is my new favorite mixed vegetable! In the two work-filled days I did manage two wholesome Bengali meals. And loved every morsel of them! I had no idea I might like Bengali food so completely! Though I can begin to guess why it should be so… mustard oil, fish, rice…aren’t these the best foundations to build a cuisine on?!

Bengalis really love mustard. Mustard seeds, mustard paste, mustard oil, and mustard Ambassadors. I agree with all of the aforesaid mustard avatars. I even love the nose-stinging pungent mustard paste served with mouralla machher peyaji at 6 Ballygunj Road. Dinner here the night before I flew out was outstanding. I again requested shukto, sauted mixed vegetables in a sauce rich with poppy seeds, mustard seeds, and milk. Our colleague’s wife guided us through the rest of the menu to help order an everyday-Bengali meal that included bhetki paturi (fish seasoned with mustard paste and steamed in banana leaves), moong dal, kasha mangsho (rich Bengali mutton curry), a posto of potatoes and tori (marrow) – I forget what it was called – served with crisp puffed loochi and steamed white rice. I couldn’t do justice to the mutton but did save myself some room for mishti doi, the only one in the gang to do so that night.

Lunch the previous day had comprised of jhur jhure aloo bhaja – the finest fried juliennes of potato, pabda jhal – a sweet water fish cooked in a mustard gravy (surprise!), shukto (this one was a mix of green beans, eggplant, bittergourd, drumsticks, bori, and green bananas), masur dal, aloo posto, and pineapple chutney, served with steamed white rice. It was a surprisingly authentic Bengali lunch for a dingy place that called itself Sweet and Sour… no surprise – it also served Chinese. We would have been pushing it had we ventured any further (from work) in the middle of that hectic humid day; this was just across the road and the Bengalis on the team ate there.

Many eons ago I had made an attempt to cook the most basic of Bengali dals – moong dal - from the very reliable A Taste of India which had ended in utter disappointment. It was my first attempt at roasting dal that was not for a podi or part of tempering, and I likely, roasted it a tad bit too much. It was enough to put off further explorations into this fine cuisine. What a loss it has been!

The one Bengali dish I do know how to cook, and one that is a favourite, is begun bhaja – sliced eggplant (or sectioned, when using the smaller long variety) seasoned with salt and turmeric and fried in mustard oil. That is all there is to it (there you have it, the recipe!). Give me two fat slices of that soft eggplant imbued with the distinct smokiness that is mustard oil, and I am a happy camper. In fact, I make extra rotis when begun bhaja is on the menu!

Alas, I had no time for the myriad street foods I saw Bengalis gorging on all over the sidewalks of Calcutta. But not for long; I plan on being back there pretty soon!

Before that, tell me what I must not miss when in Udupi – I am headed there! I might be able to squeeze in Mangalore as well!

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday indicated his willingness to begin a new innings as a cricket administrator, saying he wants to stay in touch with the game post-retirement.

Ganguly, who turned 37 on Wednesday, said he may have quit international cricket but wants to stay in touch with the game as an administrator.

“I have stopped playing cricket six months ago. I would be connected to cricket. Bengal has a lot of talent and I want to take care of it,” the country’s most successful captain told here.

Already the opposition camp in Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) is planning to pit the former captain against CAB President Jagmohan Dalmiya and it could be the stepping stone before Ganguly goes on to head the BCCI, which, according to the rotation policy it follows, is scheduled to have its 2014 President from the East Zone.

To attain the BCCI top post, Ganguly, however, would require to attend at least two annual general body meetings of the board.

Ganguly, meanwhile, kept the cards close to his chest and said, “I want to be a part of cricket in Bengal. I will take one step at a time, don’t know what lies ahead.”

“I’ve got nothing to say on this. This has been done to create a controversy and I’m not getting into it,” the former BCCI President said.

Ganguly quit international cricket last year, having accumulated 7212 runs from 113 Tests with an average of 42.17. In one-dayers, his record is even more impressive, amassing 11363 runs from 311 ODIs averaging 41.02.

Ganguly, however, remains part of the Kolkata Knight Riders, which he led in the first edition of the Indian Premier League before Brendon McCullum replaced him.

So smart and so smartly Congress twisted arms of common man- same category which was lured by reducing prices and reduced petrol / diesel charges…..and then congress managed to come back. But here was the game – petrol and diesel are up again and so is everything which concerns common man of India.

Vegetables and fruits are short – and what is available in market has been made so expensive that lower middle class can not think of buying any. They wait for Sun to go down and only then comes to the market hoping that rates will go down in late evening.

Budget was so hopeless for common man of India that sensex dips 880 points. I do not think that Manmohan Sigh had used all his callibre and mind while gicing some tips to his men. I think this is pure oppertunisn and every part is master to be one.

On the other hand whole nation saw LALU and MAMTA fihting over figures and then reports came that MAMTA will check all appointments in Railways….to make sure that there is no favouritism done. We all know DIDI that you will check LALU appointments and then you also will do the same thing…and then someone else will come…and he/she will continue this ritual of region based politics….and this play will go on. Yes- you will succeed in getting votes.

Rahul Dravid finds himself back in the ODI reckoning after the former captain was on Monday named in India’s 30-member probables list for the Champions Trophy.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee, which met at the M A Chidambaram Stadium to pick the 30 probables for the elite top-eight tournament to be held in South Africa during September 2009, however decided to ignore the likes of Irfan Pathan and Robin Uthappa.

A veteran of 333 ODIs, Dravid has not featured in India’s ODI squad since playing his last one dayer against Australia in Nagpur in 2007.

Senior cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who had opted out of the just-concluded West Indies tour, returns to the side as do the injured duo of Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan.

Hard-hitting Delhi batsman Virat Kohli, Bengal stumper Wriddhiman Saha, Tamil Nadu’s R Ashiwin and Murali Vijay also found a place in the list of probables.

UP pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, lanky Rajasthan medium pacer Pankaj Singh and the Mumbai duo of Ajinkya Rahane and Dhawal Kulkarni also found mention in the list.

On Sat. July 4, 2009, I agreed to adopt a Bengal cat. Arrangements were made, the fee paid, she, Bailey, journeyed to my home, and is ensconced in the spare bedroom. Unlike Tucker, who hid every time I came in the room for at least a week, she was waiting at the door on my second visit, and head bonked my hand. She would not sit on my lap, but did jump up close to me and laid by my feet for a few minutes as I read on the bed. Then she hopped down and laid across the room, stretched out in a defenseless pose near the door. Tucker is interested and I found scaredy cat Tucker sitting outside the door twice in the past 2 hours. This is good. He is curious.

We will proceed to bed, Tucker and I in the bedroom, and Bailey hopefully sleeping securely in her new home in the guest bedroom. She was amazing the way she stopped hiding within two hours. Her foster says she’s O+, the universal donor of love and affection to the other cats that she lived with.

Tucker hid under the couch when she arrived, but I was able to coax him out for treats, and then he got loads of love and scratches from Bailey’s foster mom and dad, which is the first time he has inter-acted with strangers. And there are fireworks going off across the street and in the back area, so I’m amazed they are both handling everything so well.

My first blog. Who am I? An author-in-writing of a book, autobiographical, of my life with cats as I

My first blog. Who am I? An author-in-writing of a book, autobiographical, of my life with cats as I turned from a cat hater to a cat lover. And now Bailey, a new cat has come into my life.

In 12/07, I put my soul mate kitty, Little Bear, a part Maine Coon, to sleep from cancer and in 5/09 his little sister, Bella, followed him across the bridge. He was 17, she 11 and had been mostly blind and mostly deaf for over a year from a brain tumor.

Nine months after Little Bear died, I got a purebred Maine Coon, Tucker, who was 6 years old. His “mama” had to go to a nursing home so he came to live with me. After Bella died, the house seemed empty, and I wanted him to have a companion.

In all my life I’ve never had to go looking for a cat, they just showed up at my door–some wanting me to take them home, some wanting a new home, some needing rescue. But for some reason I seemed to need to work on this addition to my “family.” . After three weeks of waiting and waiting for responses from a rescue group, I stopped by PetSmart and looked at a shy black kitty. I decided she wasn’t right and explained why to one of the adopters. Two days later I received a magic e-mail from a rescuer I didn’t know anything about saying she had the kitty I had been looking for, a brown tabby about two years old.

Well, not exactly what I was looking for. My requirements were a Siamese male, short haired as I was drowning in the spring shed of Maine Coon hair. I thought about 6 years old and one who still knew how to play and could teach Tucker, would be very gentle, and not too big. I have some health issues, including fibromyalgia so lifting anything weighty has become difficult. I really didn’t want a “tabby”, or an “ordinary” house cat as my relationship my Siamese a long time ago, and with Bear, had been my really loving relationships. This brown tabby 2 yr. old girl didn’t sound too promising, but I went to meet her–at least she had short hair.

Bailey was stuffed like a sausage, but very lithe and active. She was less than two, but seemed quite relaxed when she wasn’t playing hard. In the process of viewing her, I realized this “tabby cat” was part or all Bengal! What little I had heard of Bengals had not been too positive, including their wildness. I went home and researched and found I had heard wrong. They were instead described as very intelligent, affectionate, curious.

Now, Tucker was a big boy, 18 lbs when I got him, though he has slimmed down and is now a perfect “size” 16. He is very shy, and very lazy and had no clue how to play. He met the Cat Dancer and managed to lift a paw to swat at it for a few nights running, then got up one night and began really playing with it..for five minutes! He has been very afraid of everything, running to hide even when there is a doorbell on TV. Bless his heart, he had tried to make friends with my calico, Ms. Bella, but she was terribly afraid and, for the first time in her life, I heard her hiss at a cat. Not being able to see and hear had taken their toll on her feeling of safety.

So now, Tucker would have a cat who reportedly adored other cats, the bigger the better. She also loved to play. I told her her job was to teach Tucker how to play; I told Tucker his job was to show her how things were run around the house, and be a big brother to her. We’ll see what happens.

The 70th birth anniversary of the genius Hindi film composer R.D.Burman or Pancham as he was fondly known just passed us by. Most associate him with Bengal and, of course, Mumbai where he played out his fascinating musical career. But a more little known fact is where he and his equally genius father, Sachin Dev Burman, hailed from.

Born in the royal family of Tripura, the senior Burman, started off his studies in Kolkata before venturing to Mumbai to pursue a brilliant career as composer for Hindi films. Today, in honour of their famous son, the Tripura government has dedicated a bridge in the city to his honour. Named the S.D.Burman Sethu, there is a bust of the great composer reminding the locals of a family who put their state on the map of Indian popular music.
