Depuis le mois d’Août 2009, il se passe pourtant des choses étranges que je ne saurais expliquer que d’une seule façon.

Tout commença par un retour inopiné au domicile familial après de longues années d’indépendance. Ce qui ne devait être qu’une courte parenthèse dure maintenant depuis plusieurs mois. J’ai même retrouvé mon vieux pyjama en pilou qui m’accompagne désormais toutes les nuits.

Après deux ans de célibat, souvent joyeux parfois morose, j’ai retrouvé celui qui fut mon premier amour et nous avons depuis joyeusement remis le couvert.

Mettant fin à des années de vie piétonne sous couvert de conscience écologique et de parisianisme matiné de vélib attitude, j’ai décidé de repasser le permis que j’ai dédaigné quand j’avais 18 ans.

Un jour, alors que je rentrais gentiment hâlée de la piscine, je me mirai et découvris avec stupeur que mon visage était couvert de zones grasses allant du front au menton en passant par l’aile du nez. J’ai ainsi dû changer du tout au tout ma gamme de cosmétiques.

Last but not least, j’ai appris hier que je devrais certainement d’ici peu faire une croix sur mon sourire pendant une durée indéterminée car ma langue indisciplinée a fait avancer mes dents ce qui me va me contraindre à porter de nouveau ces affreuses bagues, sources de tant de traumastismes adolescents.

Quando se n’è andata tutti mi dicevano: “ti sarà vicina sempre”. su queste parole ho riflettuto per giorni e forse continuo a farlo adesso. che significa?  aspettavo forse un segno, non so. poi mi sono resa conto di non riuscire a sentirla vicina, ne’ ci riesco adesso, ma che al contrario è il mio pensiero ad essere vicino a lei. e un pensiero che fa male che uccide. e ho cercato di scacciarlo, di allontanarlo per non soffrire, così come scaccio i sogni al mattino che mi ricordano lei. è morta con la paura di morire. questa è la cosa che mi fa più male. per settimane, giorni, mesi ha avuto paura, sentendo prossima questa data. non voleva stare sola, non voleva dormire la notte. chiedeva di essere tenuta per mano. come una bambina. strano più si invecchia più si ritorna bambini, anche fisicamente. e mi sono accorta, allora, che il caso di benjamin button non era così curioso, che è vero che invecchiando si ritorna bambini, nei vizi, nei capricci e nel bisogno che si ha degli altri. sul letto immobile la salutavo per l’ultima volta. era gelida, ma la sua pelle trasudava forse acidi o quant’altro emanato dal corpo. sento ancora sulle labbra la sensazione della sua fronte bianca. ricordo le reazioni di tutti: mio padre che parlava, parlava, parlava. mia madre che si muoveva da una stanza all’altra. la gente che veniva mi stringeva la mano in segno di cordoglio, mentre a me non importava niente.  volevo solo silenzio, essere lasciata sola e cacciare via tutti quegli estranei da casa. non ero pronta a tutto ciò. non lo sono mai stata.

Life isn’t measured in minutes, but in moments

I Was Born Under Unusual Circumstances

A story that is unusual stirs our deep well curiosity. A taste of dew in solitary wickedness. There is this strangeness in everyone of us that makes us interesting individuals, but this case of Benjamin Button makes me enter into a world of what ifs…

Released on Christmas day 2008, this American film directed by David Fincher, written by Eric Roth stars Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Julia Ormond and an award winning performance of best supporting actress Taraji P. Henson.

The script is loosely adapted from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1921 interesting tale of the same title that is anthologized in his book, “The Tales of the Jazz Age”.

After the end of the Great War in 1918, Benjamin Button (Pitt) is born into this world with the appearance of an 86 year old. His mother died shortly after his birth, to avoid shame his father left him in the porch of a home for the aged where Queenie (Henson) adopted him and gave him a home.

His story is told by Caroline (Ormond), as he reads aloud Benjamin’s diary inserted by postcards and photographs to her mother Daisy (Blanchett) in her deathbed request in a New Orleans hospital during the disaster Katrina in August 2005. 

As Caroline narrates Benjamin’s story, her voice segues into the latter as flashbacks of Benjamin’s life is depicted on the screen. Like the poetic narration, the film’s tranquil earthen tones gave the film a dim edgy feel. With the excellent use of CGI and make-up, the sorrowful tone of the film makes its cinematography fascinating. But what is the point of this picture?

It is a story of love and loss of Benjamin and Daisy. Also an 86 minute epic of wonderland cinematic joyride because there is no such historical account like that of Benjamin’s. 

But Benjamin, Fitzgerald and Fincher have one thing in common; they knew the wonders of strangeness. Every sunrise and sunsets are individuals, like them stories possess a different beauty everyday. And we know that there is no endless narrative if we put two unusual things together because it blasts curiosity, and stories not just happens, it is threaded; we sew our own dreams.

Benjamin Button is a symbol of will and hope, his desire to taste life is overflowing. His wonders in brothels and bars and wars make him a stronger person, with a more panoramic view about life.

You could tell that the film is just a ride, but Daisy knows the truth. Somethings do last

Benjamin: I was thinking how nothing lasts, and what a shame that is. 
Daisy: Some things last.

And in the end, Benjamin’s body became younger until he suffers dementia, Daisy finding him, stayed with him and nurses him… in 2003, baby Benjamin Button died in the hands of good old Daisy. She never forgets that Benjamin remembers her as the beautiful soul looks into her eyes before he passed away.

Hurricane Katrina shuts the electricity in the hospital, Caroline goes out of the room to inquire about the plight, Daisy all alone in her deathbed wishes to see Benjamin and saw this hummingbird in the window. 

Director David Leo Fincher adds this movie to his dark and stylish résumé. Cinema will always be cinema [verite] I supposed, the story do counts but the possibilities are the ones that really matter.

The moments I have watching the film are speck of experiences that has the power to let me remember that good moments are the ones that count. And please do remember to send postcards to the ones you love if you’ll be away. Remember Daisy… some things do really last.

Tout le monde a rappelé que le nouveau film de David Fincher est basé sur une nouvelle de Francis Scott Fitzgerald. Il aurait sans doute été beaucoup plus inspiré s’il avait adapté le texte de Woody Allen intitulé “Next Life”.

Hey guys!

Yes I know I’ve been more than MIA but University is very stressful and tiring.

However I have a new review for you so that’s good right?

The book is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

This book is special because it was the first book I listened to instead of reading.

This is probably how I will get through all my classic novels since my time is so limited.

So instead of trying to read on a crowded bus I just pop in my earphones and listen to the story instead.

The narrator was Mr. Michael Scott and I think he does a fabulous job.

If you’re interested in audio books there is a vast library of classics and modern literature at Audible.com.

However if you’re like me with no way of paying Audible for their services classics are free at ThoughtAudio.com and LearnOutLoud.com, two great sites.

Okay enough about audio books on to the review.

This book is pretty short, 64 pages, a little more than an hour’s listening time and pretty concise.

It tells the story of Benjamin Button and his very curious existence.

For those who don’t know Benjamin Button’s case is curious because he was born a 70 year old man but not only that he gets younger with each day.

The story documents his life from birth to death with all his accomplishments squashed in between.

Now from the get go I had problems with the realistic nature of this story.

Even if I believed the premise that a baby could be born 70 years old, the fact that he was 5′8 at BIRTH defies ALL logic.

I mean how could a mother have a baby that is 5′8 in her womb and then expel him and NOT die?

That is both IMPROBABLE and IMPOSSIBLE.

Also the memory of the town folk and just people in general in this story is appalling.

How can you go to school with someone for four years and not realize he’s getting younger, or be in the army and not notice this, or work with him and not realize that he looked 50 when you started working and now he looks 30.

This story took place before plastic surgery was even thought about and he got away with it…and I have no idea how?

Barring the people’s stupidity it was pretty good.

The story of his life and his issues were interesting but all in all it was like a biography of Benjamin.

I felt sorry for him I really did.

The only time Benjamin seemed to enjoy life was in the middle because when he was young he looked and acted like an old man and when he was old he was a child and couldn’t do anything his real age would allow him to.

All in all interesting story, likable characters and occasionally humorous.

I give it a 3 out of 5.

Mumbai. In a development that is set to shock Bollywood and Hollywood alike, Brad Pitt has surprisingly claimed that Big B was his long lost son. After watching promotional visuals of upcoming movie Paa, Brad claimed that Amitabh Button (the surname allegedly distorted by Indians) was his offspring – a result from his adventures on a sea-trip that he had made when he was a 15-year-old in the body of a 50-year-old.

“I had an affair with a swimmer of international fame. Our love bore a son, however I soon realized that I was getting younger with time, so I left my son under the care of his mother. The last I heard was that she was swimming across the Ganges trying to break some new world record, and while doing so she forgot our son in Assam, who was then raised by Indians.” said Brad, claiming that his genes were responsible for Big B’s latest looks in Paa.

Brad is now out to find Big B’s alleged original mother and to have DNA tests conducted to back his claim with official evidence. This has been an emotional moment for the Brangelina couple, who have been adopting kids of all nationalities.  Angelina especially is so excited that she is believed to have said that in the event of Brad failing to track the swimmer-mother, she would voluntarily adopt Amit and make him a part of her world family.

While the claim by Brad has been shot down by many experts as being a publicity stunt, there seem to be a growing clan of people who are ready to accept Brad’s claims on on the following three counts:

1. The resemblance between surnames Button and Bachchan
2. The fact that Big B’s physical appearance is inversely proportional to his mental attributes in Paa just like Brad in Benjamin Button
3. The acting talent that runs in both the families

This has evoked mixed reactions in the Bachchan family. Abhishek has completely rejected the idea altogether, as he is least eager to be known as Abhishek Pitt. However, Aishwarya is already flirting with the idea of having Angelina as her grand-mom-in-law and becoming a part of Hollywood’s family number one as well.

Amidst these mixed reactions from family members and friends, Big B himself is reeling under the effects of a complete loss of identity.  He has not yet put a blog post on the same.

Meanwhile, rumor has it that Karan Johar has already started on his new project –“Kabhi Bachchan, Kabhi Button – it’s all about loving your new family” – a sequel to Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. Karan is confident that he’d not need to apologize to Raj Thackeray for his latest movie.

Amitabh B in PAA goes beyond ‘xtra-ordinary’

Much have been said and written about Amitabh Bachchan as an actor, as a businessman and as a human being. But no arguments that he is the God of Indian Cinema. And he is evolving with age.

When in a commercial cinema, you see a character and then surprisingly say ‘Is this He?’, that means some extra-ordinary men have come together to show some extra-ordinary cinema. Just look at Amitabh’s character in PAA. He is portraying character of a prosthetic child who ages rapidly. And anyone seeing the promos of the movie will say ‘Is this Amitabh? No way!’ Such is the realism. That’s why this demand that PAA should be entry from India for the Oscars.

Balki, the film Director, have earlier successfully experimented with Amitabh in Cheeni Kum. So no point in doubting his capability in effective story telling. So everything is going right for PAA. The usual expectations that a Big B movie generate is low for PAA. Thanks to debacle of the Genius ‘Aladdin’. Since PAA is produced by The AB Corp its economics is under control. (Take notice at two of 2009 big debacles – Blue and London Dreams. Blue drowned because of its high pricing and London Dreams vanished because of timing – Ajay Devgan gave a hit with an all-out comedy All The Best and Salmaan delivered with masala Wanted – 2 megastars suddenly in an emotive role was too much of a burden for the audiences.)

Amitabh did something unique in Black. He did extra-ordinary in Cheeni KUm playing a 60 year old romantic lead. And is beyond recognition, beyond imagination, beyond excellence in PAA. Amazimg.

The ‘PAA” team deserves an International recognition for their efforts in telling this extra-ordinary stuff on Cinema. They deserve an Oscar. Just imagine how could one think of Abhishek Bachchan playing father to Amitabh Bachchan. Its really a rare story of father-son-father-son relations and emotions. Critics, although, have started campaigning that the character is lifted from ‘The curious case of Benjamin Button’

And tell me, if Obama can be conferred with a Noble, why not an Oscar for Amitabh ‘PAA’chchan…!

What a day …hope you caught the news from yesterday morning’s PCA Nominees Press Conference — so many stars to choose from …so many actors, actresses, singers, shows and movies. Now begins the countdown til our  January 6th broadcast, when the 2010 PCA winners will be announced. And the best part, of course, is that YOU will decide who takes home EACH trophy. It’s all about you. (Me? I have to say I was absolutely  thrilled that Twilight and members of its awesome cast were nominated as I am an unabashed fan but we’ll get to that later. While we’re at it…9 days from today is the New Moon premiere.)

But wait — TV news — did you see that Aaron Carter was summarily sent home from Dancing With The Stars? Now only Donny, Mya, Kelly and Joanna remain for the final hoof-off.

Now back to the People’s Choice Awards.  Where to start with our 2010 nominees…how about Favorite Movie Actor.  One of the most popular categories ever.  In this group we have 5 guys, each of whom enjoys a more than devoted fan base, to say the least. The 5 are Brad Pitt, Hugh Jackman, Johnny Depp, Robert Pattinson, and Ryan Reynolds. (2 Americans, 1  Canadian, an Australian and an Englishman). Each inspires a tremendous following, all have starred in hit movies, and all have — to a greater or lesser degree — pretty good acting chops. That said, let’s base our poll today on the work of one of them (we’ll get to the others down the road)…and see how you feel about this guy’s (multiple) movie credentials. First up, let’s take a look at some of nominee Brad Pitt’s films. He’s done a great many of them, so we’re going to try and pull a reasonable cross section for you all to think about and vote on. (In fact, I’m sure you will all suggest countless other BP pics  that weren’t included. L’Etrange Histoire de Benjamin Button (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button)

Une vieille dame mourante à l’hôpital demande à sa fille de lui lire le journal d’un certain Benjamin. Benjamin nait en 1918 à la Nouvelle Orléans. Sa mère meurt en le mettant au monde. Bien qu’il ait la taille d’un nourrisson, tout son corps à l’aspect d’un vieillard. Son père décide de l’abandonner. Le bébé sera recueilli par Queenie, employée dans une maison de retraite, dont le désir d’être maman va être comblé par l’arrivée de cet étrange petit être. Car Benjamin va vivre sa vie à l’envers et rajeunir. A la maison de retraite, il rencontre Daisy, une petite fille qui visite sa grand-mère. Leurs routes ne cesseront de se croiser. Le film retrace ses rencontres, ses amours… tout au long des 80 années de son existence.

Ce film est tiré du roman éponyme de F. Scott Fitzgerald. Le réalisateur, David Fincher, a pris le parti de raconter toute la vie de Benjamin sur tout le film. Et c’est d’une platitude… Il aurait vraiment pu mieux faire. Je trouve qu’il s’est attardé sur des détails sans réelle importance et est passé sur les évènements qu’il aurait du creuser un peu plus. Comme par exemple, ce personnage qui ne cesse de raconter qu’il s’est fait foudroyer 7 fois. A chaque fois qu’il le croise, il lui raconte les différents moments où cela s’est produit… on attend quelque chose de ces anecdotes. Et au bout de 5 histoires, ce personnage disparait et on ne comprend pas la finalité de tous ses passages avec lui. J’ai trouvé vraiment que certains passages ne méritaient pas que l’on s’attarde autant, comme le début ou même la fin de sa vie, ou son passage dans la marine. Ces séquences n’apportent pas grand-chose de nouveau dans le déroulement de l’histoire, à part de l’ennui.

Par contre, il aurait du s’attarder plus sur l’histoire d’amour que Benjamin vit avec Daisy, pas pour l’histoire d’amour en tant que telle, mais plus sur la psychologie des personnages. Montrer comment vivre une histoire quand l’un vieillit et l’autre rajeunit. Ce que ça engendre comme sentiments, comme comportements, expliquer leurs choix…

Pendant tout le film, j’ai attendu qu’il se passe quelque chose, mais rien n’est venu titiller mon intérêt. Et 2h45, c’est long! Je ne trouve pas que le film soit mauvais, mais David Fincher n’a pas su rendre son film attrayant. On s’attache malgré tout à Benjamin Button, à sa vie hors-norme (ce n’est quand même pas tous les jours que l’on voit un homme rajeunir au lieu de vieillir!), mais alors que le sujet aurait pu être passionnant, on finit par décrocher.

Les acteurs sont impeccables et le maquillage renversant, il est vraiment difficile de reconnaitre Brad Pitt et Cate Blanchett, lorqu’ils sont grimés en personnes âgées. Et c’est un vrai jeu d’acteur de pouvoir jouer un personnage à différentes étapes de sa vie, avec tous les aspects physiques que cela comporte, et cela malgré le maquillage qui fait beaucoup.

Malgré tout ce que j’avais entendu sur ce film, j’avoue que je suis relativement déçue, et je trouve que ce film ne méritait pas la nomination aux Oscars du meilleur réalisateur pour David Fincher. Il nous avait habitué à mieux.

El director David Yates quiere reunir a todos los actores de la saga harry potter, Gary Oldman, ha confirmado su aparicion como Sirius Black para las escenas finales, mientras que Emma Thompson se ha negado ya que firmara contrato para la continuacion de Nanny Mcphee.

Last month, New Zealand’s number one student magazine Salient put out the last issue of the year. Here is the column reviewing the year in film (despite the fact it was only October).

2009. It’s not over yet, but it might as well be considering this is the last issue (the ultimate issue, if you will) of Salient. Hells teeth, where do I begin. Has 2009 been a good year for film? Well, I would say yes. It was certainly a damn sight better than 2008 but still perhaps not as good as the No Country for Old Men-There Will be Blood-Zodiac trifecta that ruled my 2007. I always keep my movie stubs so the following is an attempt to try to make sense of the little torn up pieces of paper, which are the only physical reminders of the things I saw on the silver screen this year.

For starters, Hollywood was up to its worst tricks again. The big Blockbusters came in the stupidly long Transformers 2 and the just plain stupid GI Joe. Once again animated films like Up proved that Pixar is pissing all over everyone else when it comes to good storytelling. A little film called Bruno pulled no punches in making Americans look like fools (again), and managed to fill the screen with a giant talking penis. Michael Mann disappointed me greatly with his sub-par Public Enemies, while Tarantino divided critics with Inglourious Basterds.

At the Oscars, Slumdog Millionaire, a terrible picture that everybody seems to love won way too many awards. I’m sorry, but the ending was nonsense. Its main competition The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was rubbish too, a shame because Fincher’s Zodiac was so unbelievably good. Leonardo DiCaprio was at his best in Revolutionary Road but didn’t even get a nomination (nor did the very solid film for that matter). Instead Sean Penn’s Harvey Milk trumped Mickey Rourke’s stellar comeback in The Wrestler. Kate Winslet hoisted the Oscar for her role in The Reader and Heath Ledger became only the second actor to win posthumously for his superb turn as the Joker.

Some cool people died this year too. Patrick Swayze (above) lost his battle with cancer, as did Farrah Fawcett. English rose Miranda Richardson and old timers Henry Gibson, Dom Deluise and Karl Malden all said their last goodbyes. John Hughes left, taking with him part of my adolescence. David “Kill Bill” Carradine died in bizarre circumstances (Bound for Glory jokes aside). And of course they’re still talking about some small timer named Michael Jackson.

In July the festival came with swag of good pictures. Antichrist was not one of them—I hated it. Ponyo was Miyazaki in fine form. Che was a brave, often fascinating four-hour masterpiece. Palme d’Or winner The White Ribbon was near perfect. Aussie classic Wake in Fright had the most beer and Kangaroo wrestling I’ve seen in any film. I still haven’t made heads or tales of Jarmusch’s The Limits of Control, but Chris Doyles photography was beautiful. Moon was as good a sci-fi as I’ve seen in years.

Writing for Salient has been great because Uther was radical enough to let me scribble about stuff I really like, in the hope that maybe other people will like it too. Hence I blabbed on about my New Hollywood favourites like Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia and Two-Lane Blacktop, mainly because they both star Warren Oates. Go watch them, they are the best. I also got to write on the greatest television show of all time, The Wire, which even proved a hit in the Salient office. If you haven’t seen it yet, sheeeeeit, make sure you do.

So what does 2010 bring? Well, if Avatar lives up to its absurd hype, cinema might ‘never be the same again’. Frankly, I think this is nonsense. Even if the 3D experience is amazing the film looks like a ten-foot blue turkey. Expect Transformers III and GI Joe II. As long as people keep going to these movies, Hollywood will keep making them. Expect all the best movies to come in the festival and expect them to have subtitles. Expect Megan Fox to make her relationship with Nic Sando official. Expect there to be too many movies to watch, and not enough time in the day.

I honestly couldn’t tell you how I’ve done it, but I appear to have somehow discovered the secret of eternal youth.

You heard it here first!

No, I don’t have a picture of myself aging in my attic (a la Dorian Gray), nor was I born old and have been getting slowly younger like Benjamin Button.   And, to my knowledge I have never drunk from the fountain of youth.

Yet, I appear to be looking younger as I get older.  Well – that is, if checkout staff in various outlets across the land are to be believed.

Lets check out the evidence;

• May 2008 – ID’d buying beer for a BBQ in Sainsbury’s Colchester (they ask for proof of age for anyone who appears to be under the age of 25)
• August 2008 – ID’d buying beer at Esso Garage, Exeter (they ask for proof of age to anyone who appears to be under the age of 21)
• June 2009 – Bottle of wine in Sainsbury’s (again – they ask for proof of age for anyone who appears to be under the age of 25)
• July 2009 – ID’d Entering a pub in Camden.  The lower age is 18 there.
• August 2009:  Cigarettes in my local newsagent (the legal age to buy ciggies is 18 in the UK – which implies that I look 17! And no – I wasn’t buying them for me!)
• Last weekend - ID’d for a bottle of wine in Marks & Spencer (they ask for proof of age for anyone under the age of 25)

Yet when I actually was an underage procurer of legally sanctioned drugs, I very rarely got ID’d for anything.

So – aside from possibly exposing my drinking habits –  this overwhelming evidence clearly illustrates that I am literally looking younger as I get older.

I can’t pretend I’m not chuffed to bits about this – being an elderly 27 years of age and all.

(When I find out how this miracle occurred I will, of course, share the secret on this very blog)

Então ele combate vários agentes, dá um pé na bunda em sua namorada, usa um computador para esquecer tudo que sabe de kung fu, e tem ajuda de um negro para entrar nesse mundo virtual.

5. Se vc assistir um dos Star Wars ao contrário, é sobre um jovem que descobre que um homem vestido de preto é seu pai. E passa a vida toda tentando matá-lo por isso. Outro Star Wars conta a história de um jovem que descobre que uma mina é sua irmã, mas ele quer dormir com ela mesmo assim.
