Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) lays it on the line:

He doesn’t care what his constituents want, he’s going to toe the Democrat line, even if it means he loses his job in 2010.

That said, I have to admire Sen. Bennet; at least he has the courage of his (party’s) convictions, and is willing to say so, with no ambiguity or equivocation. Asked a direct yes-or-no question, he simply answers “No Yes.” We could wish for that same simplicity from the rest of our elected officials.

Of course, it remains to be seen if he will actually vote the way he’s said, or whether his sense of self-preservation will kick in if his constituents really lay it on the line for him.

At least we’ll have video evidence of the hypocrisy if that happens.

Biography:

al Bennett (born Lovall Bennett, ?, died 1991) was a Jamaican tenor saxophonist and jazz and roots reggae musician who began his career in the 1940s. He made a number of releases on the Island Records and Crab Records labels.

In the late 1940s, Bennett led his own band, the Val Bennett Orchestra.^[1] Artists that played in Bennett’s band included Jah Jerry Haynes,^[2] Lloyd Knibb, and Ernest Ranglin, whose first professional experience was with this band.^[1] The Val Bennett Orchestra performed regularly at the Colony Club, performing mainly for foreign visitors to Jamaica.^[3] The band also toured abroad, performing in countries including Haiti, where they picked up merengue and played it on their return to Jamaica.

In the early to mid-1960s, Bennett was a regular member of Prince Buster’s band, playing on many of the singer’s best-known recordings, including “Al Capone”.^[2] Bennett was also a regular studio session musician, appearing on many releases from artists including Theophilus Beckford, Pat Kelly, Barrington Levy, and Delroy Wilson.^[1] Bennett’s session work included saxophone, horn, and trombone.^[1] In the late 1960s, Bennett joined Bunny Lee’s “All Stars”.^[2]

Notable tracks by Bennett include “The Russians Are Coming” (1968), a cover of “Take Five” by the Dave Brubeck Quartet,^[4] which would later go on to be used as the theme tune to the British television series The Secret Life of Machines in the 1990s; and “Tons Of Gold” (1970), with the Harry J Allstars, a version of their track “The Liquidator“.^[2]Bennett also worked for producer Lee “Scratch” Perry, and his spaghetti western-inspired “Return of Django”, recorded with Perry’s studio band The Upsetters was a major UK hit in 1969.^[5] His track “Baby Baby” was also included on The Upsetters‘ album Eastwood Rides Again. Perry was the only producer to get Bennett to perform vocals, “Baby Baby” being one of these examples, the other being “Barbara”.^[6]

Para no quitar la sana costumbre de disfrutar de los candentes descuidos de las famosas y no tan famosas, aqui les dejamo una fotografia de la bellisima Hayden Panettiere, que muy inocentemente poso para la camara, sin saber que nos mostraba algo mas que su perfecta dentadura. ¡Disfrutenla, amigos y felices pajas!

If a man walked down the street with sideburns, a cravat and a top-hat I would probably be extremely tempted to yell something rude or obnoxious.  Or I would assume he was attending a very fancy-fancy dress party.  Either way he would, by definition, be a bit of an idiot.  However, if I was born in the right era (also known as the 19th century), I would not have to guess at someone’s level of sanity due to the convenient fact that a man in stockings and a tailed coat walking around London/Sydney would be completely normal.  And I could wolf-whistle (perhaps not) 1) without being a pervert, and 2) without having my own sanity questioned.

I say this, as I have just arrived home from “High-Tea” at a very close friends breast-cancer fundraiser.  And the best part of the night (and the best part of most of my nights) was watching Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility and noticing every female in the room squealing as Mr. Darcy (the owner of a quizzical brow and the miserable half of Derbyshire) appears at the ball.  Yes, he can fill out those tight-tight-TIIGGHHTTTT trousers (so nicely, in fact, that not much is left to the imagination), but it is more than that which ensures the devoted love of every girl between the ages of 14 and 60, and some below and beyond these barriers as well.  And I cannot quite put my finger on it. 

Colin Firth, as the argument goes, makes the B.E.S.T Darcy.  The Hollywood star, Matthew Macfadyen, doesn’t really come close- but despite the disparity in looks (Mr. Bingley is the looker in this film)/acting ability/etc we still all go weak at the knees for him.  The line “You must let me tell you how ardently I admire and love you,”- which FYI is featured on anything from mugs, towels, t-shirts and other acceptable gifts- as I glance around the room, is mouthed by every person- and we all know Elizabeth Bennet’s retorts to everything.  In fact, I believe we are all so well versed in Austen, that given a time-machine we would blend in rather successfully with locals.  We also manage to freak each other out afterwards, sipping tea and saying such delicate compliments as: “Your complexion is rather fine today, and I do believe that it is due to Lady Wallis’ execution of her plan to take a turn out in the open air with you, after sitting so long in one attitude”. Yes, Austen is good for the maintenance of the English language as well.

What is quite interesting is the way every female, when the topic arises, is suddenly an expert in all matters Austen.  It does not matter whether it is a vague question, a guess at events following the end of the book, or a discussion about the successfulness of a film-version- we all manage to become authorities on the art of directing, writing, character casting, psychological evalutation, marriage therapy and acting.  Such is the power of Pride and Prejudice.  We cannot bear to think that the director would choose to “butcher the art of Austen” by placing Mr. Bennet’s words in Lizzy’s mouth during the Mr. Collins piece.  Oh, no, the absolute travesty!  How dare they?  It is such a quaint little trait- the ability to analyse an Austen recreation so thoroughly that one would believe they are a literary critic- and every female possesses it. 

No other book or film has made me feel the way that Pride and Prejudice does.  I feel like a walking stereotype.  A ridiculous and hopeless romantic.  I am neither of the two, but I do not deny that the almost-engagement scene gives me literal shivers.  Jane, Lizzy, Lydia, Kitty and Mary are like sisters to me, and it is this sort of talent that Austen has- the talent to make us FEEL for the characters, that inspired my simple Facebook status “My good opinion once lost, is lost forever <3 Darcy” which inspired 72 comments, most of which derived around casting the ‘best Darcy’- which ended up with the following cast list:
Darcy- Clive Owen
Bingley- That teacher guy from Glee
Lizzy- Uncasted but possibly Emily Blunt, although many disagreements here
Wickham- Johnny Depp
Directed by Tim Burton.

I have had more conversations about Darcy than I care to admit.  And I have pined after anyone with similar traits. 

Yet despite all this, and the obvious disadvantage here of being biased as a female, I think I have cracked the Darcy Code.  It is all in the character.  As we have loved, and pined over (and, admittedly, drooled over) Mr. Darcy for so long- whether it be the BBC mini series, the Lost In Austen episodes, the Hollywood version, the Book or the tens of thousands of rewrites and parodies (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Mr. Darcy, Vampyre and so forth)- it no longer matters who acts the part.  As long as they fit the vague criteria- tall, dark and relatively handsome, we are all ready to accept any Darcy into our hearts- although the director better be ready for a protesting mass of fans should any part of the book be altered in any way.

La hermosa Hayden Panettiere se ha hecho hyper famosa gracias al su sensual interpretacion de una indestructible porrista llamada Claire Bennet, la cual se regenera instanteneamente de cualquier herida que su hermoso cuerpo reciba (y que incluso la conserva perpetuamente virgen ¿como ven?)

Pero no es gracias a sus poderes ni a su actuacion, ni nada de eso por lo que el personaje se hizo tremendamente popular. Como la mayoria de los casos, Hayden se hizo famosa unicamente por estar que se cae de buena. Y por estar dotada de una carita de mosca muerta que hace la delicia de todos los pedofilos (algo asi como el 98% de la poblacion masculina)

Todos veian la seria para poder contemplar a la suculenta adolescente con un provocador uniforme de porrita que mostraba un par de deliciosas piernas. Todo eso convirtio a Hayden en la ninfa de 20 años mas deseable del planeta.

Hola! vuelvo con el cuarto capítulo de Pride and Prejudice, me gustó tanto esta serie que estuve buscando para comprarla y conseguí algunos lugares por internet pero la verdad es que no confío mucho en esas cosas así que no me decidia. Por una de esas casualidades se me ocurrió ir a Blockbuster (creo que se escribe así) y preguntar. El chico que me atendió me dijo “está solamente para comprar, y queda uno” sin pensarlo mucho le dije “bueno, me lo llevo” pobre estubo un rato buscandolo porque no lo encontraba pero yo ahora soy feliz porque puedo ver la serie cuando quiera y cuantas veces quiera.

Por otro lado tengo una pregunta para hacerles a las personas que leen mi blog, ultimamente se me estuvo ocurriendo ¿y si paso de wordpress a blogspot? la gran diferencia entre uno y otro es q blogspot te permite hacer cambios en la apariencia del blog que para wordpress tenes que pagar. Pero no se… no me decido ¿ustedes que opinin? a ver si con su opinión decido que hago.

Finalmente me decidí a subir la serie Orgullo y Prejuicio del año 1995, muchas podrán encontrar la misma serie en Pride and Prejudice Fans y esta es exactamente la misma version solo que la subi al servidor de Rapidshare para que pueda haber mas medios de descarga de esta fantastica serie, tambien la corté en partes para que se descarga sea mas rápida aunque trabajosa. Si quieren bajar en una parte cada capítulo entren en el link de arriba de Pride and Prejudice Fans, sino, voy a ir subiendo los links de la serie espero que los que no la vieron la disfruten y para aquellos que la vieron si quieren verla de nuevo acá está. HORRIBLE CATASTROPHE.

Dreadful loss of Life and Limb.

It is a long time since our city (New York) has been visited with so horrible a disaster, as the one which we, as public journalists, find it our painful duty now to chronicle. The accident occurred at the black and white smith shop of Edward Duvall, No. 102 Charlton street.

It appears that Mr. Duvall, a young man in the prime of his life, being about 33 years old, has been doing a considerable work for the light house at Sandy Hook; and while engaged in the performance of it, he employed the fishermen resident in the neighborhood, to collect the cannon balls and bomb shells which are frequently found buried in the sand, or rolled up in the surf, which he agreed to purchase as old iron. During yesterday, a load of the above articles were brought to Mr. Duvall’s shop, and on examination, the latter found that some of the shells were yet loaded, and before taking them into the house, he proceeded to empty them of the composition. This was about five o’clock in the afternoon. Mr. Duvall, proceeding to empty the shells, took one, said to be of the shape of an egg, about 24 inches long, upon his lap, sitting on a seat which he procured on the side walk, and with a stick loosened the composition, which he shook upon the walk between his feet. While thus engaged, the shell which was made of cast iron, exploded with a tremendous force killing Mr. Duvall and two others instantly, and severely wounding several others.

– Mr. Duvall’s arms were both entirely blown off, his right leg was taken off at the knee, a horrible hole was blown through his abdomen, and his whole body was more or less injured. He never breathed after the explosion. He lived in the upper part of the house wherein was his shop, and has left a wife and one child to mourn his loss, as also a large circle of beloved friends.

Mr. A.O.Price, builder, of No. 79 Thompson street, aged about 39 years, and who is now engaged in building the Grace Church’s new house of worship in Broadway, was passing shortly before the accident, in a one horse Rockaway wagon, on his way to the North river, where he was expecting a cargo of stone from Sing-Sing, and loosing a linchpin from his wagon, stopped at Mr. Duvall’s; and while the wagon was being repaired, he was engaged in conversation with the unfortunate proprietor when the explosion took place.

– He received a blow on the back of his head from a piece of the shell, breaking in the entire back of his skull, causing instant death. When found, he laid on the sidewalk, with his hands in his pockets, entirely lifeless. His horse, a valuable one, was standing in the front of the door, and a piece of the shell struck him on the side of his head, taking it entirely off; the same fraction of the shell passed across the street, took a large piece out of the eave gutter of the house, and glancing off the shingled peak, fell at some distance beyond. Mr. Price has left a wife and two children to mourn the untimely end of the husband and father.

Richard Broderick, a lad of 17 years of age, residing at the corner of King and Hudson streets, was passing at the same time, with a young associate by the name of Bennett, and stopped a moment, picked up some of the composition, and as he started from the scene, was arrested by death; being instantly killed by a piece of the shell, which struck him on the right side of the neck, just on the edge of the cheek, making a wound of about two inches in diameter, severing the jugular vein, killing him almost instantly. His clothes were much burned, and his body dreadfully mangled.

Robert Bennett, step son of Abraham Moses, No. 280 Hudson street, was in company with Broderick, and was thrown into the air several feet, falling in such a manner as to severely cut his lip. Both his legs are broken above the knee, and dreadfully mangled, so that one must be amputated; the other may be saved. If mortification does not set in, his life may be saved. He is perfectly conscious, and has been so all the time since the disaster. These are all that we can hear of with any degree of certainty. It is said that a cartman, who was passing at the time, had an arm blown off, and another young man was much injured. The report of the explosion was heard at the distance of eight squares. The glass in the windows on both sides of the street, is more or less broken from Hudson street to the river. A piece of the iron weighing about 2 pounds, is said to have fallen at the corner of Varick and Carmine streets; another piece weighing about ten pounds, flew towards the river, and entering the office of George Leland, pork and provission packer, corner of Washington and Charlton Streets, knocked a decanter out of the hands of a cartman named Travis, who was standing in the office with several others, without injury to any individual. — Journal of Commerce.

The Victims of the Explosion. — The remains of three of the ill-fated victims of the accident of Monday, Aaron O. Price, Edward Duvall and Robert H. Bennet, were interred yesterday afternoon with appropriate ceremonies. Richard J. Broderick, the other person who was killed, was buried the previous day.

The body of Mr. Price was temporarily deposited in the marble cemetery at the corner of Second street and Second avenue, until it can be removed to the family burying ground in Eastchester. His remains were attended to the grave by the New York Tent of Rechabites, New York Lodge No. 10, Washington Lodge No. 12, Mount Sinai Encampment No. 3, and the R.W. Grand Lodge of the I.O. of O.F., a large number of friends and the workmen in the employ of the deceased, the whole forming a very imposing procession. The ceremonies at the burial place were conducted by P.G.M. Wilson Small, who officiated as chaplain for the occasion.

The Lady of Duvall was attended to the grave by Tompkins Lodge No. 9, and Meridian Lodge No. 42, I.O. of O.F., and a large concourse of his neighbors and friends.

Hola, Gaeta al habla. Aunque sigo de vacaciones, voy haciendo paradas técnicas en casa… Ahora, antes de irme a la montaña a pasar unos días, os dejo los enlaces para bajaros la primera adaptación que se hizo en Hollywood de Pride & Prejudice, que en castellano acabó titulándose Más fuerte que el orgullo (qué imaginación han tenido siempre los traductores de películas!!).

La película está protagonizada por Laurence Olivier (el Heatcliff de la versión clásica de Cumbres borrascosas) y Greer Garson; por lo que he leído en críticas por la web, parece que el público está dividido sobre la película. Algunos opinan que Darcy es demasiado suave, que le falta el carisma que tiene en la novela. ¿Qué opináis vosotr@s?

Bueno ya nuestas amigas de argentina sabian de hace tiempo de que Lost in Austen estaba siendo transmitida por films&art, pero aqui en Chile mucha gente no tiene ni idea o se a topado con los capitulos a medias por no saber a que hora se transmiten, asi es que les dejo los horarios para que no la se la pierdan, ya que aún quedan capitulos y por lo que e escuchado es probable de que la vuelvan a dar una vez terminada. Asi que aqui van los horarios

Ya somos bastantes los que quedamos encantados con esta serie que creo que es una de las mejores adaptaciones modernas de la obra de Austen, por un lado mantiene el caraccter de los personajes y la linea de acontecimientos y por otro lado nos muestra situaciones y dialogos que mas de una sorisa nos sacaron al verla….y bueno si te preguntas como fue la estancia en el set y como se desarrollo la serie aqui te dejo el detras de escenas de Lost in Austen en ingles eso si por que aún nadie se da el trabajo de subitularla, pero el ingles de los ingleses es tan pausado que se hace super entendible asi que no creo que tengan problemas.

Hace unos meses nos encontrabamos con la noticia de la aparición de esta extraña adaptación de Pride and Prejudice, semanas mas tarde se logro subir los primeros 3 capitulos del libro en pdf. y ahora pues el libro completo eso si que en Ingles por que al parecer aun no esta lista la traducción. Asi que les dejo la descarga de este libro que hasta pelicula y juego promete lo unico malo es que el e-book que a proporcionado nuestro amigo Carles no cuenta con las fantasticas ilustraciones pero bueno la historia es lo que vale.
