This project required the direction and use of actors (outside of the crew). Which worked out pretty well. All of them were cooperative, even late into the night while we were shooting. They really wanted to do a good job for the film; they would often times ask Nneka (our director) if what they had done was what she was looking for, constantly asking if they needed to provide “more,” “less,” or if it was “just right.” I was really impressed that they came out and performed in full spirit for people, as a whole, they didn’t know–very professional!

I would have to say that the main lesson I took away from this project requiring actors is that it is key to know actors, or at least someone else that knows actors. Networking and knowing people is what enabled us to have four people come out and act on camera for strangers.

Liz Coates has supplied four single page readings for Friday 23 October. I’ve sent them by email as I’ve had a bit of difficulty posting them on the blog. Here’s the reference and Liz’s comments.- Viv

Ref: John Berger, The Sight of a Man, in: Selected Essays & Articles – The Look of Things, Pelican, Penguin Books Ltd, UK, 1972.
The book in SofA library is a small paperback with yellowing pages and I had to do some adjusting in photoshop to make it readable.
A great writer talking about visual perception; leads well into more scientific and cognitive discussions.

I’d also like to refer to two additional texts for interested readers. Both these texts have a great deal of insights to share:

Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Cezanne’s Doubt, in: Sense and Non-Sense, (trans. Hubert L. Dreyfus & Patricia Allen Dreyfus), Northwestern University Press, 1964, p.9-25.

Lawrence Gowing, Cezanne: The Logic of Organized Sensations (1977) in: Conversations with Cezanne, (ed.) Michael Doran, Berkeley, University of California Press, 2001, p.180-212.
(I was tempted to submit this as the reading, but it is very long. Full of insights about painting in general, B&W images of Cezanne’s paintings scattered through the text.)

Best wishes, Liz

Think about the following quotations. How would you interpret them? What is the author trying to tell us about sight as a way of knowing? What is the link between sight and language?

“It is seeing which establishes our place in the surrounding world; we explain that world with words, but words can never undo the fact that we are surrounded by it” (7)

“The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled” (6)

“We never see just one thing; we are always looking at the relation between things and ourselves” (9)

Did you find anything else interesting or thought-provoking?

For a long time I have been looking for a sensible introduction to p-adic Hodge theory, and I think I might finally have found one: these lecture notes of Conrad and Brinon, an expanded but still prelimary set of notes based on their CMI summer school lectures earlier this year. Thanks to David Brown for pointing out these notes on Math Overflow, as part of an answer to a question about models.

A much shorter survey is Berger: An introduction to the theory of p-adic representations, but Conrad and Brinon give a lot more background, which seems very helpful.

È deceduto in Brasile l’imprenditore Tommaso Berger, conosciuto come creatore del caffè Hag. Berger è morto all’età di 80 anni a Rio de Janeiro.

The FBI says it did not edit videotapes of the aftermath of the 1995 bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building before turning them over to an attorney who is conducting an unofficial inquiry into the bombing.
The FBI turned over more than two dozen tapes taken from security cameras on buildings and other locations around the federal building to Salt Lake City attorney Jesse Trentadue, who obtained them through the federal Freedom of Information Act. Trentadue said the tapes are blank at various times in the minutes before the blast.
“They have been edited,” Trentadue said Wednesday.
The soundless recordings show people rushing from nearby buildings immediately after a 4,000 pound fertilizer-and-fuel-oil bomb detonated in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building on April 19, 1995, killing 168 people, including 19 children, and injuring hundreds more.
Some show people fleeing through corridors cluttered with debris. None shows the actual explosion that ripped through the federal building.
Trentadue said the absence of footage before the blast indicates something was on the tapes that the FBI did not want to make public.

To start out with general notes, I’ll go straight from the book by Ramona Blattel Glastetter and some of the information she gathered.

“Vincent and Anna Katharina were married on Nov. 20 1864 in St. Vincent’s Catholic Church in Cape Girardeau, MO…He came to America with his parents, the family settling near New Hambrg. he grew into mahood in Scott County. He served as a Private in Company E–18th Illinois Infantry Regiment on the Union side during the Civil War.”

Small break to include a small excerpt from one of Grandma Norma’s letter to her niece Anne:

“Grandpa Heisserer (nosy again) was hidden in a clothes press during the Civil War when he went AWOL because his wife was having a baby.”

Parts from Vincent Heisserer’s Obituary titled “Taps Sounded for Vincent Heisserer” published 2 Nov 1926:

“Vincent Heisserer was born in Alsace Lorrain January 21, 1837, and died atSt. Francis hospital in Cape Girardeau Tuesday afternoon at about five o’clock. Recently Mr. Heisserer fell and broke his hip and had been confined to his bed since that time. At the time of his death he was almost 90 years of age.

“With his parents…he came to America at the age of seven years, the family settling near New Hamburg He grew to manhood in Scott County and was elected county treasurer and served sixteen years, from 1874 to 1890. During the time the county seat was located at Commerce, he lived there and was also engaged in business at that point. In 1864…Mr. Heisserer was married to Miss Catherine Dirnberger at Cape Girardeau, and in 1878 they moved to the R.M. Finley place on he Morley Hill Road, where they resided until 1882.

“In 1880 deceassed established a mercantile business in Benton on land where the Benton Hotel now stands. He sold out in 1891 to his son, W.H. Heisserer. Vincent Heisserer served all during the Civil War in the mIssouri Infantry on the Union side. He was in the battle of Shiloh and sever of the other imoratnt engagements. He was appointed county judge at one time and served out an unexpired term. Mr. Heisserer was an active Democrat.

“Mr. Heisserer’s father was blind and had a large family, which made it necessary for young Vincent to get out an work. At one time he plowed corn for a man named Ravenscroft on land where Morley now stands. He picked up his education by reading and studying at home and while hired out to the farms of this section.

“Vincent Heisserer was always on the forefront of progressive moves, and was very active in helping Louis Houck promote the railroad through this county. He helped finance the first flour mill in Benton and lso aided with the las mill. He was one of the original stockholders of the Benton Bank and was director until his age prohibited his taking active part in its affairs. Mr. Heisserer was regarded as one of the best wheat binder mechanics in this whole country.

“Solemn Requiem Mass will be said at Guardian Angel Church, Oran, thursday morning at 8:00 o’clock and solemn Requiem Mass at New Hamburg at 10:00 o’clock. Burial will be made in the New Hamburg cemetary by the side of his wife who died eighteen years ago.”

Here is another snipit from a letter written by Grandma Norma about her grandfather Vincent Heisserer:

“…I didn’t like Grandpa Heisserer either–he was like a Prussian General. He had to be boss but by the same token, every one of his children he gave $5,000 to when they got married (but he practically named their mates) and some were miserable–they had to be Catholic.”

This statement makes sense considering that one son, Michael Heisserer, committed suicide by overdosing on morphine. He married Lillian Ann Proffit without his father Vincent’s approval. He and a note to Lillian were found in his friend’s house where he was staying after being forced out of the Heisserer house.

And here is information from Anna Katharina’s obituary published in the Scott County Democrat on 7 Jan 1909 and corrected on 14 Jan 1909:

“Anna Katharine Heiserer ded at her home in New Hamburg December 31, 1908, beloved wife of Vinent Heisserer, aged 64 years, 6 months, and 27 days. Her death was not expectd. It came like a bolt from a clearsky, and was a sever shock to her many relatives and friends. The immediate cause of death was heart failure, and she was engaged in her household duties up to a very short time of deining.

“She was born in the Kingdom of Bavaria on the 4th day of June, 1844, and her maden name was Anna Katharine Dirnberger. She came to America with her parents when an infant in 1845. It was not the original intention of her parents to settle in Scot county, but the steam boat upon which they were passengers met with an accident and had to land at Commerce for repairs. This cnty was but sarcely inhabited then, bt her parents learned of a German settlement near Benton, so they came out to see them, and being pleased with the country located one-half mile southeast of Benton upon the farm now owned by Judge W.C. Lambert. Uon this farm with her parents sh passed her childhood days and grew to womanhood

“Vincent Heisserer and Anna Katharine Dirnberger became acquainted early in life, and were happily united in the HOly bonds of Matrimony at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church in Cape Girardeu, Missouri…They first settled at Commerce, residing upon a farm, laboring and saving from their accumulations until December 28, 1879, when they moved to Benton, locating on a farm one mile and a half south of Benton. In 1880 Mr. Heisserer opened up a general mercantile business in Benton…embarking in the hotel business…but misfortune overtook them and they lost the hotel together with its contents by fire.

“Not being able to secure a suitable residence lot in Benton, and the further fact that there was no Catholic Church in Benton at that time, they purchased property in New Hamburg in 1899, erected a desirable dwelling and located there to pass their declining years near the church of their faith. Mrs. Heisserer was a zealous and consistent member of the church and labored faithfullly for its upbuilding up to the hour of her death.

“Confirmed in the belief of her blessed Redeemer she had an abiding faith in a Heavenly reward, and she bore her burdens with patience and fortitude never losing an opportunity to aid and assist in the discharge of her church duties. Her funeral was coducted at te beautiful Catholic church in New Hamburg on Monday, January 4, 1909, at 10 o’clock a.m…As a tokenof the very high esteem in which the deceased was held, in a community where she had passed a christian and useful life her funeral, and her burial and New Hamburg Cemetery, was attended by atleast six hundred sorrowing friends and relatives, representing all sections of the county notwithstanding there was a heavy down pour of rain all morning, and at least as many more would have been present had the weather been favorable.”
