Marlous Oosting, 19 jaar oud is geboren in Assen, haar afkomst is puur NL. Als kind wist Marlous al dat ze zangeres wilde worden en denkt daar naar vele jaren nog steeds het zelfde over… 

Als 10 jarige begon Marlous al fanatiek te zingen in een kinderkoor waar ze veel mee optrad en vaak de solo kreeg. In de jaren die volgden probeerde ze zoveel mogelijk ervaring op te doen en trad op tijdens opendagen, schoolfeesten enz.

Ze bleef zich ontwikkelen qua zang en probeerde zich te oriënteren in de muziekwereld. Ze was veel bezig met netwerken, mensen vinden die haar konden steunen en die in haar geloven. 

Door aan het programma Idols op RTL 4 mee te doen, heeft Marlous veel mensen wakker geschud door haar grappige en lekkere brutale uitspraken tegenover Henkjan Smits! Hierdoor werd ze weer een ervaring rijker. Door voor dié camera’s te staan is Marlous geen onbekende meer voor vele Idols fans. Destijds heeft ze nog in een blad gestaan, genaamd IN. Daarin stond hoe Marlous de jury heeft overtuigd van haar kunnen in het programma Idols.

Deze lijst zal niet worden samengesteld zoals alle andere hitlijsten, maar word gewaardeerd en gehonoreerd aan de hand van originaliteit, creativiteit en talent. Arrangementen, tekstbewerking, videoclips en de complete uitstraling van de productie. Naar verkoopcijfers zal niet worden gekeken. Met deze lijst willen wij een stimulerend effect uit laten gaan, ter bevordering van de kwaliteit van de Nederlandse muziek producties. Buitenlandse producties worden niet in deze lijst opgenomen.

Participatie en ideeën zijn welkom. Deze lijst gaat in januari 2010 officieel van start. Tevens is de bedoeling om elk jaar in december een aanmoedingings prijs toe te kennen, aan het meest orginele arrangement en complete uitstraling van het product.

So my first proper blog is mostly to test out the limits of WordPress and to try to figure out all these little features and widgets and niggles and trinkets. However, seeing as I’m here, I might as well also use it to go on a bloody great rant about “Digital Britain” and its various spin-off issues, and how the people frequently speaking about it in the press are out-of-touch with the realities of the situation. I like to call them “berks”. It’s an under-used insult and one that I feel is nicely appropriate.

Not to be confused with this Berk, who I'm actually rather fond of.

Ostensibly the irritation that has prompted this post has been caused by an article on the BBC website today; a website and organisation that I’ve got a lot of time for, in all honesty. The BBC gets a lot of crap from a lot of commentators but when it comes to leading from the front, at least in a web 2.0 sense, they do a pretty bloody good job. BBC iPlayer is a tremendous addition to an already impressive website, and something that I appreciate being made readily available to me as a license-fee payer despite not having a TV aerial that works. I like being able to watch Top Gear at 11pm, on my computer, while simultaneously playing Football Manager and chatting to friends on Skype and MSN. It’s 2009; men can multi-task now, as long as it doesn’t require us to take our faces away from just the one screen.

However, some berks have today said that the corporation should start to charge for catch-up programming on iPlayer á la iTunes. Now, I realise that hundreds of post-Y2K products having a lower-case ‘i’ in front of them so that they sound more 21st Century is getting slightly confusing and that we also live in a world where making money is most people’s ultimate aim. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t trying to make as much money as possible at every opportunity possible while exerting the least effort possible, and these people are exactly the same. However, they seem to have not only missed the point entirely, but also I would suggest have totally made up some “research” to support their views.

Here is one berk...

Lorraine Heggessey, CEO of Talkback Thames (the illustrious company that brought us such “entertainment” gems as WAGs Boutique and Dale’s Supermarket Sweep) and Steve Hewlett, a man whose views I generally agree with despite him being associated with The Guardian but who has got it all wrong this time, both think that the rich, undertaxed general populous of Britain should be made to pay for catch-up online programming like that found on iPlayer.

The fundamental problem with this is that it’s not a viable way for them to make money – and let’s get this straight, they’re not thinking about the BBC’s revenues when they suggest that iPlayer should charge for shows. Heggessey in particular knows full well that her company can’t start trying to charge for catch-up programmes online if the BBC don’t set the precedent. Not that I can believe anyone would pay to see a repeat of Minder.

However along with some gems from Hewlett* comes some startling research from Fremantle Media, who are by complete coincidence the company that own Hennessey’s Talkback Thames. The research apparently concludes, and I quote,

“Research carried out by Fremantle suggests that people would be willing to pay up to £2 for certain shows.”

I’d be very keen to find out exactly who was asked and what questions were put to them for Fremantle to come up with this conclusion, because I reckon I could do a straw poll that would blow their research out of the water. My single question would be,

How much would you be prepared to pay to watch BBC TV shows online using iPlayer, bearing in mind that they are currently available online and on BBC television for absolutely nothing?

I’m pretty confident that everyone within a one hundred mile radius would come up with the same answer. The question isn’t what do you think a show is worth, rather, how much are you prepared to pay for them when your license fee means you’ve already paid to watch them on your television? It’s absurd. Some will argue that having catch-up TV still costs more than not, which I appreciate. However the BBC rakes in a good £3.4bn each year from license fees, so I think they can probably just about scrape the barrel. And, to be fair to the corporation, they have said in that same article that they have no plans to start charging for iPlayer content. Quite right too.

ITV aren’t complaining because they stick ads into their catch-up and live online streams, and for me this is the way for companies like Talkback Thames to make their money. By forcing people to start paying for programmes that they are currently getting for free they’re only going to succeed in alienating their online audiences in the pursuit of bottom-line – and this is the absolutely fundamental problem with all the people who are making these ridiculous suggestions about how to police or charge people when they’re using the internet. You can’t just cut people off for downloading things illegally because it’s not that simple, and you can’t just start making people pay for services that they’re currently getting for nothing because the very nature of the web means that there’s almost always some other means of acquiring the material you want. Web 2.0 or whatever you want to call it has so many opportunities for creative people to make money – depressingly, it appears that the people in the media industries that we have revered as being the height of creativity for so long are just as lazy and stupid as the rest of us.

The other thing of course is that there’s no sign that catch-up shows being made available online for free is damaging anyone’s revenues; all that’s happening is that some people who don’t think they’ve quite got enough money already have spotted an opportunity to try to squeeze a bit more out of the resources they have available. What they don’t seem to realise is that they’re not ripping off Generation X or the baby boomers any more: they’re dealing with Generation Y here, and we know far more about all this than they do.

*Gems from Hewlett include: “At iTunes prices, I would pay” and “The BBC never thought it was appropriate to give away DVDs, so why should catch-up be free?” Well, perhaps because DVDs cost money to manufacture, burn, package and distribute you cretin?

As a public health student and a zombie enthusiast, this Op-Ed for the Yale Daily News combined two of things I love most. With an virulence rate of 1.00 and fatality rate of 1.00 (or 0, depending on how you look at it), zombism is a public health worker’s worst nightmare.

Berk: Zombie movies can teach us

Is Yale prepared for a zombie attack?

After wasting hours of time studying for tests, writing senior essays or building Styrofoam dinosaur dioramas, many students forget to focus on the inevitable zombie apocalypse. Once the crisis hits, where will the unprepared student body turn? The political science majors are too soft, Directed Studies freshmen are too inexperienced and those math kids will probably just stay in the library working on problem sets. Who can possibly be our zombie saviors?

Enter public health enthusiasts.

If you’ve ever seen a zombie movie, you’ve seen an introductory guide to public health. The flesh-eating undead are an epidemiologist’s worst nightmare, but they can teach us a lot about public health crises and begin a philosophical discourse on the trade-offs between individual liberties and public safety.

Whether students learn them from an HIV surveillance internship or from watching “The Evil Dead 2,” there are four vital public health themes that everyone should know.

First, epidemics can strike at any time. Whether caused by medical experimentations of the rage virus (“28 Days Later”), pollution of 2-4-5 Trioxin (“The Return of the Living Dead”) or unusual moon alignment (“Night of the Living Dead”), a virus can appear quickly and spread rapidly. Without adequate resources, preparation or knowledge of the disaster, uninfected individuals face a heavy disadvantage compared to those who understand the risks of disease. Educational public health warnings are important. Pay attention next time: Get a flu vaccine.

Second, the medical model doesn’t have all the answers. In today’s health system, almost all health funding goes toward treatment of illness instead of prevention. This is an inefficient way to deal with cardiovascular disease, and an inefficient way to deal with proliferation of the undead. There’s no cure for zombie-ism, just as there is no absolute cure for diabetes or HIV (there are, however, life-saving treatments for both of these diseases). Prevention is key and must receive greater priority when looking at the health policy issues today.

Third, public health is an interdisciplinary field. Broad epidemic preparedness requires work from all academic disciplines from epidemiology to sociology, from medicine to economics. The economic efficiency of vaccine delivery, the morality of community quarantines, the anthropology of disease and the construction of wooden barricades are all important issues that come up during a health crisis such as a zombie attack. Disease — whether caused by a stomach bug, biological attack or brain-devouring syndrome — rarely has a magic-bullet cure. Instead, a coalition of experts must provide new perspectives to new problems. Going into the consulting industry after graduation? Public health experts can still use your help!

Fourth, disease is a global issue and affects everyone. Pathogens ignore national borders. They are able to cross the world in hours or days; no country is invulnerable to the importation of disease. Additionally, pathogens can adapt to changing ecological environments, creating strains resistant to basic treatments (the infected in “I Am Legend,” for example, began as allergic to sunlight, but by the end of the movie could venture into the dusk-time shadows). Around the world, the improper delivery of medications for tuberculosis and HIV has already created such resistance. All demographics — whether poor or rich, local or distant — must have access to effective health care treatment and prevention programs to prevent the global spread of these resistant “superbugs.”

Other important life lessons abound in zombie films: Always keep your doors locked; it’s a good idea to have some canned food around; in general, avoid malls; don’t bro out too long with your buddy who just got that zombie bite.

Is Yale prepared for a zombie attack? Probably not. But public health experts constantly fight to prevent such epidemics and, when they occur, work diligently to recognize, isolate and cure any infectious disease.

So how can you become one of these champions of global health? How can you better understand the epidemiological principles that serve as a foundation of a healthy population? How can you learn to protect yourself from outbreak, starvation, or your infected residential college master charging you while you’re cornered against a fence?

Go watch a zombie movie.

William Burke

On 28th January, 1829, Irishman William Burke was hanged in Edinburgh, Scotland, for the murder of 17 people for profit. Burke, along with his colleague, William Hare, drugged and strangled their victims in order to sell them to the Edinburgh Medical School for dissection. In return for his testimony against his partner, Hare was released and disappeared from the public eye.

The modus operandi of drugging someone with alcohol and then strangling or suffocating them became known as burking. By extension, some who burks victims is called a Burkite - a follower of Burke – or simply a burker.

The verb can also be used figuratively to refer to the process of hushing something up or suppressing something.

The British English berk or burk is not related. It is a homonym – sounds the same – but has a very different origin. The word is a contraction of the Cockney rhyming slang, Berkley Hunt for cunt. The Berkeley Hunt was a famous hunt that took place in Gloustershire, England.

The final tally from Warren Buffett’s 2008 buying spree: $20 billion-plus. “While most investors panicked or were forced to sell, [Buffett] put more than $20 billion to work last year, positioning his insurance-focused conglomerate to profit if the economy and markets recover in coming years,” writes Alistair Barr of MarketWatch.
