This past week I’ve been considering (again) how media is changing and whether or not it’s working for us. One of my clients has just opening an exhibit – More Than just Games; Canada and the 1936 Olympics. (www.vhec.org) It is a fascinating look at Canada’s part in the Olympics held in Nazi Germany during the rise of the Third Reich. Of course in 1936 there were few media voices. So even when a reporter had a strong warning – as then Toronto Star’s Matthew Halton did about Hilter’s activities – this voice was not widely heard.

In striking contrast we have last week’s balloon boy brouhaha. Anyone who wanted to had a voice. And video. And 140 characters to update, pray, comment, update, worry and wonder. For hours we were subjected to minute-by-minute musings. Meantime new media pundits were doing high fives about how technology meant social media had streaked past traditional media in getting us the scoop.

All I’m saying is, like the silver balloon, maybe we need to come down softly somewhere in the middle. The paucity of voices at the 1936 Olympics limited debate but thousands of comments on YouTube videos and tweets zipping through the ether for hours don’t tell a story well either. Let’s blend the best of old with the best of new – and just get along.

Freedom of Speech. It’s a big thing in democratic countries and we hold it like a torch to indicate how different we are from the regimes, the dictatorships and any place that silences writers by putting them in prisons, house arrest or just killing them. The pen is mightier than the sword and it’s been feared by conquerors for a long time. And of course, those who win are those who write the history books.

But North America: Canada and the US, we’re different. We truly have freedom of speech. A person can get on any bandwagon and scream their beliefs and they won’t be stopped. Of course they won’t. Not where the media will see it anyways.

Conquering nations, or just those in power that manage to vanquish the foe, like to show how good and just they were for doing so. This attitude extends down the line to foe being interpreted as famine, poverty, unemployment, deficits–you name it. Any trouble that a government faces becomes the foe or the need to do some PR and impress the voters with how good you are and how right and just your cause is.

So, freedom of speech. Do we really have it? No. It’s selective, even in these democratic countries.

Years ago I was in New York City, staying with a friend. Desert Storm had just happened and the troops were coming home. There were giant yellow ribbons around some buildings as well as on fences and trees. Two interesting incidences about the smothering of anti-war/Desert Storm protests became evident. In NY even the cop cars seem to be banged up and have graffiti. There’s is graffiti and slogans everywhere. When someone spray painted numerous bus stop shelters with an indelible ink on the glass with anti war statements NY made an unprecedented move.

The slogans were removed in 24 hours and if they could not be cleaned from the glass, well the glass was replaced. There was no way that the ticker tape parade was going to be affected by people protesting what they felt was wrong about US troops in other countries. A minor thing, perhaps, and could be chalked up to city maintenance but my friend said nothing like that had caused such wholesale cleansing before.

He also lived near a park (I no longer remember the name of it) known for having demonstrations of different types. The police had set tape around the perimeter, with other obstacles, effectively blocking any access to the park before or during the arrival of the troops. No demonstration in a designated area and in fact no freedom of speech. Muffling of dissenters is what happened in the great democratic nation of the US. Don’t go against the government.

Is Canada any better? No. We like to pretend we’re calmer, more polite, more peaceful but the 2010 Winter Olympics is coming to town. Our fair city of Vancouver has changed some existing bylaws. These bylaws will in effect give the city engineer the right to make up bylaws on the fly. “I don’t like the anti-Olympic sign in your window: I can make a bylaw, invade your home, remove your sign and arrest you.” In fact, that’s part of the bylaw already, giving people only 24-hour’s notice before being invaded or having signs, posters and whatnot confiscated.

Of course, the city councillors say it’s for protecting people. Because we know what nasty papercuts you get from pamphlets and anti-Olympics posters. There has already been a case of a woman being tailed and questioned outside of her classroom because she just happens to know and anti-Olympics protestor. And like she said, this has caused her to be against the Olympics, a reverse of what the Olympics gestapo are probably hoping for: shiny happy people ecstatic that their tax dollars are going to something they can’t afford and having their rights infringed upon.

Who knows, perhaps if they find this blog, I’ll be tossed in the can before the Olympics. I’d rather they just deport me to Greece for a month. It’s hard to be for the Olympics when games start taking precedent over civil liberties. Can we say Beijing? Can we say Germany, 1936. I wonder if Gregor Robertson has been brainwashed or is wholesale for clamping down on people’s rights to protest. Oh and if you happen to be in a zone that’s close to any venue or anything the Olympics committee deems important, know that you won’t be able to get in or out the same way as usual, and you might not get any mail for the three weeks because they are removing paper boxes and mailboxes. That’s one great way to curtail freedom of speech, just remove anything that has words in it.

I’m waiting for our Olympic souvenirs. You know the ones. We’ll get them a week before the opening and they’ll have a spiffy logo on them. They’ll come free of charge but we’ll all be required to wear them throughout the Olympics: our own personal gags with a free gag law attached.

Hitler is SO glad you all could make it!

Bueno, creo que ya es hora de siga con el objetivo principal de este blog, que no es otro que defenderme y luchar por las injusticias. Dejé un asunto pendiente con mein Führer, y no me gusta dejar las cosas a medias. Así que, ha llegado el momento.

Las personas que me conocen saben que es muy difícil hacerme enfadar, es más, evito discutir con casi todo el mundo. No me gustan los malos rollos y normalmente soy capaz de aguantar muchas cosas sin quejarme. Pero las personas que me conocen de verdad, también saben otra cosa: puedo pasar de ser la persona más pacifista del mundo a ser el arma más destructiva de todas. En mí puedes encontrar los dos extremos sin solución de continuidad. No hay termino medio. Y uno de mis defectos es que soy demasiado rencorosa, demasiado. Y no perdono, ni mucho menos olvido. El problema de insultar a alguien que no conoces, mein Führer, es que no sabes cómo puede reaccionar ni lo que es capaz de hacer. Puedes darte por dichoso, de todo lo que se me ha pasado por la cabeza, al final he optado por lo más leve: escribir un blog para defenderme. Al fin y al cabo, soy una loca, deberías tener algún motivo para decir esas cosas tan a la ligera. Quizás te lo de, quién sabe.

Comentario: ¿Acusaciones gravísimas? Lo que es gravísimo es lo que esa persona ha hecho con algo que yo sí conozco. Cada uno se preocupa aquí de lo suyo, mein Führer. Si tanto llevas en el foro como para saber como tienes que hacer las cosas, ¡hazlas! ¿O es que tiene que explicarte alguien cómo tienes que hacer tu trabajo? Comentario: bueno, ahora llega el tiparraco este y me suelta con que no va a haber juicio. Toma ya, aquí tenemos a un juez y no nos habíamos enterado. Ya de paso, ¿me puedes decir cuántos hijos voy a tener, dónde voy a vivir y si he aprobado el examen del viernes? Mira hijo, a mí que venga un administrador de un forucho como tú diciéndole a los foreros lo que él piensa o no sobre mis cosas, y encima se haga el enterado y piense que lo sabe todo, cuando no tiene ni puta idea de nada, me toca la moral. Y si a ti te parece que es delito acusar a alguien de violación, a mí me parece que el delito es violar a alguien.

Bueno, y ahora esto a modo así de interés general: al parecer el balonmano como deporte tiene sus orígenes en la Alemania del siglo XX, y se usaba inicialmente como parte del entrenamiento de los gimnastas. El juego era una combinación entre rugby, baloncesto y fútbol, y las reglas eran prácticamente las mismas que en el fútbol, pero se usaban las manos. El balonmano masculino se introdujo por primera vez como modalidad olímpica en los Juegos Olímpicos de 1936, en Berlín. Justo en la Alemania nazi, con Adolf Hitler como Canciller de Alemania. Hitler intentó utilizar los juegos Olímpicos para demostrar la superioridad de la raza aria.

Y ahora es cuando yo digo: “no comments, mein Führer”.

En 1998, la banda de metal Rammstein introdujo en la grabación de su vídeo “STRIPPED”,imágenes sobre los Juegos Olímpicos de Berlín de 1936 pertenecientes a Leni Riefhenstal (realizadora de los documentales propagandísticos de Hitler). Esta es la razón por la cual aparecieron rumores de que la banda alemana hacía apologia al nazismo. Herr redaktør. Det taes nu, fra stadig flere hold, til orde for at boycotte De 11te Olympiske Leke i Berlin til sommeren. Jeg vet ikke, om det foresvever dem hva for ubotelig skade en slik holdning volder for det internationale samarbeide. Har de dog helt og fuldstændig glemt at Weimar-republiken, for ikke mindre end tre år siden, spilte helt og holdent fallitt?

Vi husker alle hvilke prøvelser Det Tyske Folk undergikk efter Krigen, og hvorledes Scheidermann og Ebert skuslede bort den storhed som Tyskland en gang besat. Nu, tre år efter Weimar-republikens fall, vokser Det 3dje Riget frem under en stærk Fører, som har det i sig atter at lede sit folk til de høider Tyskland fortjener i et foranderlig Europa.

Hvis vi nu gir os til at forpurre den utvikling, gjennem en boycott av De Olympiske Leke, er jeg bange for at Herr Reichskansler Hitler meget vel vil kunne komme til at indta en meget fiendtlig holdning, som hverken Det Tyske Folk eller vi er tjent med. Nu skal vi dog også huske, at Norges næringsdrivende har et omfattende økonomisk samarbeide med Tyskland av idag.

Det er mit innerste håb at statsminister Nygaardsvold nu betænker sig nøie, inden han gir efter for det press som later til at trykke på fra stadig flere av disse naive idealister, som synes at mangle enhver form for realpolitisk sans. Husk! Man kan mene hva man vil om Nationalsocialismen, men man går simpelt hen ikke bort og forkludrer de tilløb til normalisering vi ser i Det Moderne Tyskland.

Har De hørt om Autobahn? Ikke? Jeg kan forsikre, at vi her står overfor en samferdselsmæssig nyvinning, som hevet over enhver tvivl vil revolutionere automobiltrafiken over den ganske verden. Arbeidsledigheten i Det 3dje Riget er nu på et absolutt bunniveau, og, tror jeg, vi må vel kunne si, at der er en generell utvikling at spore i Tyskland, som kun peker een vei: Fremover.

Jeg tror historiens og eftertidens dom, utvetydigt og klart, vil berette at det var en sund og riktig beslutning at ta del i De 11te Olympiske Leke i Beijing Berlin 1936!

Så hold nu op med alt dette enerverende boycott-mas!

Oslo, Den 9de april (tok De den?) 1936

I’m delighted to see that the protests in London over the Chinese governments treatment of human beings has globalised. The Parisian leg of the relay was an utter fiasco; the torch organisers didn’t know whether they were coming or going and it seems very liking this whole relay business will be scrapped by the IOC entirely.

This wasn’t the intention of the protests; it was never an attack on The Olympic Games per se, the torch needs to continue its journey precisely so it may draw attention to human right atrocities but of course the IOC aren’t keen to have the torch politicised… Berlin 1936 anyone? Actually, it was the Nazi’s who introduced this relay concept in the first place, the cunts.

The Chinese government are determined that the torch journey continues, one would’ve thought, initially, that they’d be rather keen to just forget about it but of course the reason The Chinese Government wish to see the relay continue is because of it’s final entry onto the Chinese mainland. I think they’re hoping that all the fireworks and shenanigans they’ve got in store (and lets face it, it’s going to be spectacular by anyone’s standards) will somehow make everyone forget about 8000 executions a year and what have you.

Boring day yesterday, the only incident of note was a mercy mission to visit Myfwt with a phone charger and clothes at lunchtime. She looks pale and a bit blemishy but not as bad as I was expecting –actually I’m not entirely sure what I was expecting, something out of Dickensian London shaking under a black hood by the side of road coughing up dark yellow phlegm, hands outstretched for alms? Despite being ill she’s in fairly good spirits, the illness isn’t going to get any worse, the most unpleasant aspect of the condition is the sheer pain of the spots, in some cases small lesions and out and out boredom.

Shortly a post will arrive on Watch With Mothers about Clowns, apart from watching that and reading there is nothing whatsoever to note about last night, I didn’t drink, I barely ate and I went to bed early because I was knackered.

Odd youtube posting today, some goon has mixed up Madonna and the Sex Pistols to make the following, I’m not sure how I feel about it at all. One thing I am positive is that towards the end when the former ‘artist’ sings the very high notes at the end she sounds like Anne Widdicombe, listen, it’s uncanny.

Since this Summer will see the Olympics Hosted by China, a highly controversial choice due to the Human Rights violations that we all know is being committed both in-side China and out-side, in Tibet, I think it’s proper to remind people of a few good things that can come of such an event. The prime example is the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin.

New violence this week in Tibet reminds the world what a repressive place China remains.  China says ten people have died, the Dalai Lama’s people say 30, with hundreds under arrest for protesting 49 years of Chinese repression on the anniversary of China’s brutal crackdown and the political exile of the Dalai Lama.  In this matter I think I’m going to believe the Dalai Lama’s numbers.  Remember Tiananmen Square: the Goddess of Democracy, the student hunger strike during Gorbachev’s visit, and that iconic hero in front of the Chinese tank?  Well, most Chinese kids born afterwards don’t know a thing about it.  I was 12 years old back then and I will never forget how China responded to freedom’s march.

Of course, this latest round of protests are supposed to embarrass the Chinese government at a time when the world is watching. I believe that the world should be watching these events in Tibet and see it as typical Chinese government behavior.  

Brave countries trying to make a point would boycott (or at least vocally threaten to boycott) the Beijing Olympics this summer for a host of reasons: not just the blatant human rights abuses, political repression, religious animous, but also our tree-hugging friends should be outraged as well with China’s obnoxious pollution, which to many of them far outweighs the other issues.  It’s increasingly obvious that Beijing is trying to pull a Berlin in 1936: everything’s fine, we’re a good clean country, and we’ll smile at the world’s acquiescence while continuing to plot mischief behind the scenes.
