“The Gorilla Experiment” or “The Athens Recurrence”

I wasn’t blogging about The Big Bang Theory when the show began, so I’ve never really commented on its titling structure. Each episode becomes a theory, which is totally logical and has resulted in some titles that make episodes seem momentous and potentially life-changing (even if they rarely are). Something like “The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis,” though, really captures what makes that episode work, and especially captures Sheldon’s character and the value the show places on him.

That’s interesting with “The Athens Recurrence” (Edit: which apparently was a title that got changed to “The Gorilla Experiment,” which makes this paragraph either irrelevant OR potentially indicative of why it was changed) is that it simultaneously points out how recurrence is both an overwhelmingly positive thing in this universe (which is almost always improved when supporting characters recur and provide a sense of seriality) and a persistent problem (in that the same storylines keep recurring without any real sense that the show is changing). And while I’ve accepted that the former isn’t going to happen, and that the latter is inherent to the show’s setup, there are some times when the show pushes my button by teasing the former but ultimately accepting the latter.

If I had to place this episode within that paradigm, it’s ultimately a wash. I like that we’re seeing a recurring character like Bernadette sticking around, but at the same time the storyline ends up being distinctly unpleasant. And while I thought Sheldon and Penny’s storyline was as charming as their interactions always are, there was an inherent long-term question (basically, why Penny still feels insecure about her intelligence in her relationship with Leonard, and how it feels to have him so quickly latch onto Bernadette) that gets entirely glossed over. It made for an episode that’s great as a logline, but was actually more of a mixed bag than I would have expected.

I’ve often been criticized for being too easy on Sheldon, as some have argued (sometimes successfully) that my love for the character wrongly becomes love for the person, who at times is legitimately mean and in some cases justifiably spurned by his friends. However, I think that bugs me about Leonard in this episode is that he was pretty terrible to Howard and yet wasn’t a fun character in the least. When Sheldon’s mean, there is at least our perverse entertainment from observing his hilarious antics. When it’s Leonard who fails to realize that Howard (who has never had a girlfriend) would be concerned about Leonard striking up a friendship with his girlfriend, and it’s Leonard who sends her a text message that clearly outs Howard as insecure and jealous, I find no enjoyment whatsoever. In fact, I actively dislike the character, which is something beyond the ambivalence that I usually feel for the guy.

It’s not that Howard is perfect, as before he got a girlfriend I’d have gladly allowed any character to ridicule him or “textblock” him at every turn. However, he’s finally found some sort of a chance at happiness, and I find Bernadette to be a charming addition to his life and the cast. However, for Leonard not to see that Howard is extremely happy to be in a relationship, and to not be able to read the signs of Howard struggling to stay afloat in his new relationship, plays with one of the show’s most problematic paradoxes: for a show about really smart people, sometimes they act extremely dumb. And it’s one thing when it’s them getting caught up in geeky activities or something similar, where everyone has their off moments. However, Leonard is no Sheldon when it comes to reading social situations, and to have him act that ignorant (and in some ways as mean-spirited as Sheldon, such as when he stands there being snippy during their heartwarming conversation) only made the character that much less appealing.

I’m not of the mind that Penny and Leonard are entirely devoid of chemistry, but the show’s biggest problem is that we have been given no reason to root for their relationship. And, even in this episode, Leonard completely ignores his relationship with Penny when considering his friendship with Bernadette – at no moment does he stop to consider what this could appear to be, and we’re missing that scene where Leonard learns a lesson or where something of meaning comes from his behaviour. At least with Sheldon, there is a sense that his social inhibitions keep him from learning from his mistakes, but Leonard was just being stubborn and ignorant, and there’s nothing funny or entertaining about that.

And to be entirely fair to the show, it’s not like Penny’s efforts to save the relationship (by learning about physics so that she could, like Bernadette, discuss Leonard’s project) are any more romantic. There’s an underlying message that Penny is doing this because she has no chemistry with Leonard (nothing to talk about, no way for her to be part of his life), and yet the show largely ignores it to turn this into an issue more of pride than of love. She is tired of feeling stupid, and she goes to Sheldon hoping for a quick fix to what is a much deeper problem that learning a few sentences about Leonard’s project being reductive of existing research is not going to solve. The fact that the episode never has them reconcile, or even acknowledge that they were in a fight for the entire episode, makes it all feel the relationship only exists so that the characters have reasons to participate in storylines with other characters.

And yes, I complain less when that storyline becomes “Project Gorilla,” and features both Jim Parsons hilariously failing to teach physics and Kaley Cuoco humorously failing to understand physics. The show can’t go wrong with this recurring pair in terms of comic elements, and their lectures were easily the highlight of the episode. However, there’s still this sense that the scenes are hiding something deeper, avoiding the actual ramifications of their lesson (that Penny doesn’t feel connected to Leonard) and then never really putting them together. I like that the lessons change neither Sheldon (who is still a terrible teacher, and who only teaches Penny something that degrades Leonard’s research) nor Penny (who undermines her physics discussion with the only thing she remembered from the lecture, that fig newtons were named after a town in Massachusetts and not Newton the scientist), but I don’t like that Penny’s act seems to have no impact on Leonard and is literally just played as a joke. It’s not ultimately a laughing matter.

When there’s jokes at the beginning of an episode, like Penny’s hilarious rundown of the reasons that Sheldon sits where he does on the couch (to the letter), they’re cute and clever. However, when you get to the end of the episode, you want to feel like the jokes have built up to some sort of a conclusion. And while I’ve accepted that each season won’t have that impact, I at least expect individual stories to feel like they reach a climax and get some sort of “acknowledgement denouement” that forces the character to think for just a second about what happened in the episode. I might have my issues with shows that tack on a cheesy moral onto the final scenes (See: Modern Family), but at least it shows some sense that the characters remember the twenty minutes of tonight’s episodes if not the 50 episodes that aired previously.

Cultural Observations

• The show could have spent an entire episode on Sheldon dealing with two girls being in the apartment, which isn’t new (it happened with Stephanie/Penny) but always brings out some of Sheldon’s best qualities.
• However, sorry show – Bazinga is not happening. Drop it and move on.
• The show is becoming a major place for geek product placement: Nintendo puts Mario Kart out there (with the footage and everything), and apparently ThinkGEEK sent the show one of its Tantaun Sleeping sleeping bags, likely in order to try to get it onto the show.
• I know it was inevitable, but I really could have gone without Howard’s mother being part of his relationship with Bernadette. It was cute when it was just Howard being awkward and always introducing her as “My Girlfriend, Bernadette,” but it became less engaging when his shrill mother entered into the picture.

Snif! Ma Bernadette est à l’hôpital…

Le tout a commencé la fin de semaine dernière: un chuintement inusité se faisait entendre dans les courbes. Le lendemain, c’était clair: il y avait un problème de servo-direction. Blech!

Le tout est sous garantie mais enfin… Mardi, j’avais rendez-vous chez le concessionnaire pour sa révision régulière de 64 000 km. Une belle facture de près de 600 douilles, mais c’était prévu car c’est l’entretien le plus complet: on lui a tout révisé, rempli ses divers fluides… sauf celui de servo-direction, car il se trouve qu’une des conduites est perforée. Et la pièce n’était pas disponible. Le mécano a fait de son mieux pour colmater la fuite temporairement, mais nous n’avions aucune garantie quant à la durabilité de cette réparation destinée à nous faire patienter jusqu’à la semaine prochaine, lorsque la pièce commandée serait arrivée.

Oyate avait besoin de Bernadette mercredi pour aller à Morley (près de Calgary). Un contenant de fluide pour servo-direction l’a suivi. Puis hier soir, alors que nous avions quelques courses à faire, un bruit plus qu’inusité s’est fait entendre. À l’oreille, la fuite s’était aggravée et le liquide se répandait sur le radiateur. L’ouverture du capot a confirmé le problème. Puis la servo-direction est complètement disparue, par une nuit de quasi-verglas. Pas agréable. Ni sécuritaire d’ailleurs.

À contrecœur, donc, ce matin, nous sommes allés conduire Bernadette à l’hôpital. Nous avons une Cobalt de location (automatique et sans pneus d’hiver évidemment, re-blech!) jusqu’à mardi.

Je souffre d’anxiété de séparation…

Oh! J’oubliais. Bernadette en a aussi profité pour devenir borgne. Il faut remplacer le phare gauche. Juste après la vérification! Nous en profiterons probablement pour installer des phares plus performants.

“The Vengeance Formulation”

Last week, the show chose to split its story between something that works (Sheldon and Penny) and something that doesn’t (Leonard, Wolowitz and Raj on their own), resulting in an episode that was a mixed bag (although perhaps a bit better than I gave it credit for, as my distaste for the latter perhaps overshadowed the strength of the former).

This week, however, the show returns to more of an ensemble structure, and while nothing reaches the heights of adhesive ducks it’s a solid episode as a whole because it manages a reasonably emotional Wolowitz storyline with a cheap but not ineffective Sheldon storyline. There was every chance for these two elements to go off the rails (based on both the show’s tradition of misusing Wolowitz and the presence of Kripke), so the fact that they stayed moderately in orbit makes this a victory, if not exactly an overwhelming success.

When it comes to Wolowitz, I strongly believe that less is more, unless the show decides to do what they did here and turn Wolowitz from obnoxious to introspective. While interacting with a fantasy version of Katee Sackhoff isn’t genius or anything, it allows Wolowitz to stop acting like he runs the joint and actually come to terms with his delusions. The naked bathtub fantasy version of Katee Sackhoff spoke the truth, and while there were signs of the old Wolowitz (feeling more slighted by the fact that Sackhoff’s date was tall as opposed to handsome, since he actually believes he is handsome) for the most part he was honest with himself. Sure, he messes up his romantic overtures to Bernadette, but he was legitimately charming during his tone deaf wailing at episode’s end, and the fact that Howard was given any continuity at all in terms of a relationship is such a huge step forward that I think it’s commendable.

It also shows how even Howard, who to this point one couldn’t imagine in a relationship, is effectively getting the relationship stories that Leonard has been given in the past, except ones that are actually funny. While Sheldon in a relationship might be too ludicrous, and Raj in a relationship has been made impossible by the alcohol gimmick, Howard and Leonard are both effectively eligible, but the show has always resisted treating Howard seriously (by having his actual skills be so outmatched by his capability), sending him off to gothic night clubs and moving him away from legitimate couplings. However, while Leonard’s relationships tended to be neurotic and sort of dull, Howard’s relationship is (to use his own word) quirky in a way that adds a fun dynamic to the show. Sure, I’m not a huge fan of his relationship with his shrill mother, and I could have used less talk about what he was doing in the tub, but for once the show didn’t actually treat him like a horny 15-year old, and for this I was most grateful and certainly entertained.

As for the other half of the episode, it really comes down to how funny you find someone talking in a high-pitched voice and how you feel about Eric Kripke. Twitter user SnowDan mentioned that he likes Kripke because it’s ironic that the university bully has a lisp (which would, outside of that world, make him subject to bullying), but I’ve always felt like that joke has been long ago used up in favour of dialogue that calls attention to the lisp unnecessarily. The idea of Sheldon having a nemesis is funny on its own, which is why Leslie Winkle was more interesting to me (especially because the gender politics of it all wreaked havoc with Sheldon’s already problematic ability to respond in kind) than someone both more dully mean-spirited and less witty. Beyond the broad irony, that for me was not clever enough to sustain the character beyond a first appearance, the character is a normal guy who has a lisp, and most of the humour derived from the character has been through how he says it rather than what he says.

But I thought that this week’s story was less let down by Kripke (who on only a few occasions fell into traps like “Wiot”) and more by a single decision. I like the general principle of the storyline, with Sheldon’s big moment turning into an embarrassment and his attempt at vengeance going horribly, horribly wrong. There’s something very solid about that, and even when I know that we’re never going to get to see the aftermath (since everything will, conveniently for Sheldon, reset next week) the uncontrollable chaos of the final sequence was even communicated through webcam. However, where the storyline suffered was that the joke of Sheldon and his high-pitched voice didn’t appear to actually be Jim Parsons with helium, nor Jim Parsons faking such a voice. Unless I’m mistaken, the voice was looped in during post-production, which if true is a huge disappointment, and took me out of the scene regardless.

There were a number of things in this episode that bugged me a bit, like how the other guys so quickly joined in on laughing at Sheldon on the radio (as it was national radio, after all), or how Raj was too busy making fun of Sheldon to help Leonard try to get him out of bed, or how Penny’s self-awareness about her relationship with Leonard didn’t extend to her realizing that they have no actual chemistry and that sitting in close proximity to each other does not a relationship make. But none of these elements felt like they were the point of their respective storylines: Sheldon’s embarrassment was necessary to get to his vengeance gone awry, and Penny needed to be aware of her own relationship so she could objectively view Wolowitz’s and be able to ward off Bernadette.

And those two storylines worked, coming to solid conclusions that were either narratively satisfying or humorously destructive. They didn’t offer any particular comic highs, but they didn’t offend any of my sensibilities either, so I can’t really complain.

Cultural Observations

• Katee Sackhoff in the tub makes me realize that some part of me feels obligated to watch 24 this season with her being part of the cast.
• It says something about the show’s conditioning to not bother remembering things from previous episodes that it took me a while to figure out if Bernadette was actually the person on whom Wolowitz went on a double date a while back. However, I’ll give them this: her trait of not getting Wolowitz’s jokes was memorable enough that I was at least 75% sure.
• While some small moments bugged me, I thought Sheldon nailing the whoopie cushion gag on Leonard really did prove its comic validity.
• And just in case we weren’t sure, apparently Raj is delicious caramel.
• If Sepinwall writes a review, I think “as soon as I play Cylon and Colonist” seems like the obvious “after the jump” line. We’ll see if I’m right.

Ma Arturo (che è anche su Myspace) non è solo un luogo, è soprattutto grafica, illustrazione e animazione, è immagine e colore, il tutto declinato in forme varie dettate dai cinque diversi linguaggi che ciascuna delle loro menti e delle loro mani esprime e mette in condivisione con le altre. Niente è uguale a se stesso nel mondo di Arturo, ogni prodotto realizzato è unico e risponde alle esigenze creative delle autrici e ai desideri del cliente.

Accanto al ricco portfolio, fatto di loghi, locandine, illustrazioni, animazioni, biglietti da visita, immagini coordinate, decorazioni, ritratti, incisioni, stampe calcografiche etc, Arturo realizza anche le “sgorbie”, capi d’abbigliamento personalizzati a mano attraverso la tecnica della linoleografia, ovvero incisioni su linoleum che permettono di ottenere tratti sintetici e fortemente espressivi nello stesso tempo. A Lourdes il raduno dei Francescani francesi nel centenario dell’Ordine

“Vogliamo rivolgerci a Dio e chiedergli di darci un po’ di quella follia evangelica che animava San Francesco”: è quanto ha detto fra Nicolas Morin a proposito del raduno che dal 24 al 26 ottobre riunirà a Lourdes, oltre duemila francescani, fra religiosi e laici. Nella cittadina mariana dei Pirenei sarà festeggiato così l’ottavo centenario della nascita dell’Ordine fondato da San Francesco D’Assisi.

“Vogliamo vivere insieme un tempo di rinnovamento” ha aggiunto fra Morin membro della fraternità di Brive e coordinatore di “Lourdes 2009”. La scelta di Lourdes come luogo d’incontro per frati francescani, cappuccini, conventuali, religiose e laici si accorda con il fatto che nel cammino spirituale di Bernadette e in quello di Francesco esistono delle similitudini, sono esempi che dimostrano come Dio si riveli ai piccoli.

“Le persone che incontriamo hanno sete di Dio e hanno bisogno di rendersi conto che la fraternità è possibile malgrado le nostre imperfezioni – ha aggiunto fra Morin – noi possiamo vivere semplicemente su altri valori che su quelli oggi vissuti dai più. La nostra spiritualità è un tesoro: osiamo viverla e proporla agli altri”.

Il raduno di Lourdes prevede momenti di preghiera, catechesi, veglie, celebrazioni liturgiche e spettacoli. “Che il tempo forte dell’anno giubilare sia un tempo di conversione – auspica fra Morin – che ciascuno ritrovi la gioia di credere. Dio è all’opera oggi, può fare cose nuove con ciò che noi siamo”. (T.C.)

L’année scolaire va bientôt commencer et je continue à parler de mes excursions estivales… C’est que j’ai comme qui dirait un surplus photographique! Voici un autre chapitre, à Calgary cette fois. À la mi-juillet, il me fallait retourner chez le concessionnaire où j’avais pris possession de Bernadette, car celle-ci devait recevoir une inspection bisanuelle liée à un traitement qui a été appliqué à la carrosserie.

J’avais bien vu, lors de mon bref passage du mois d’août 2007, cet édifice qui se dressait de l’autre côté de la rue, mais j’étais plutôt pressé de rentrer à Red Deer. Je n’étais pas revenu dans ce coin depuis, mais il me fallait attendre deux heures pendant qu’on bichonnait ma voiture. Il y avait bien le centre d’achat voisin, mais après une heure à m’y promener, je voulais prendre l’air. C’est alors que j’ai ré-aperçu cette église, Saint Luke’s, et que la curiosité m’a poussé à y entrer. Ceux qui me connaissent savent bien que je suis fasciné par l’architecture moderne et par les aménagements liturgiques.

L’extérieur de l’église est un exemple parlant de «brutalisme», cette vogue qui visait à mettre en valeur la texture brute des matériaux comme le béton ou la pierre. Les formes du bâtiment sont audacieuses et elles ont conservé leur intérêt malgré un agrandissement en 2004 qui en a modifié quelque peu le volume original. À l’intérieur, ce qui pourrait avoir l’air d’un cube de béton sombre se révèle être empli de lumière naturelle.

Les vitraux, au niveau du sol, ne sont pas dénués d’intérêt. Ils ont été réalisés par Robert Oldrich et représentent des aspects de la création. Ils baignent les bas-côtés de la nef dans une douce lumière multicolore qui donne à ce bâtiment beaucoup de chaleur.

Le baptistère est de facture plus récente; il a été installé durant les travaux d’expansion et de rénovation réalisés en 2004. Comme il se doit, il se trouve près de l’entrée de l’église, symbolisant par sa présence l’entrée dans la vie chrétienne de chaque baptisé qui entre dans le lieu sacré. Je ne suis pas certain d’aimer le choix de l’aménagement en ce qui concerne le lien avec l’architecture générale du bâtiment, mais sa dimension symbolique est indéniable.

Les travaux d’expansion ont amené la construction d’un centre communautaire qui donne au bâtiment l’aspect d’un garage sur certaines façades… un choix douteux. Néanmoins, cette communauté est manifestement dynamique et avait besoin de bâtiments pour héberger ses nombreux services à la population environnante. J’ignore comment se vivent les célébrations liturgiques dans ce lieu, mais j’aurais envie de le savoir.

Curieusement, les prières consacrées à notre-Dame de Lourdes ou à sainte Bernadette, jusqu’à une date récente, étaient peu nombreuses. L’année du 150^ème anniversaire des Apparitions et celle qui l’a suivie, dédiée à Bernadette, devenue soeur Marie-Bernard, ont comblé cette lacune.

Mais le manque lui-même avait du sens. La Vierge, l’Immaculée Conception, est un don du Père. elle est comblée de l’Esprit-Saint et elle conduit à son Fils : “Faites tout ce qu’il vous dira.” De même, et plus encore, sainte Bernadette aurait horreur de toute dévotion qui s’arrêterait à elle.

En marie et en Bernadette, admirons l’oeuvre de Dieu : qu’elles nous entraînent sur le chemin de l’action de grâce.
