Imagino Steve Jobs bloqueando Bill Gates no MSN.

E as relações pessoais?

From: Henrique Yagui Takahashi – henrique.takahashi@hotmail.com

To: Mr. Timothy John Berners-Lee – burners-lee@creaternet.com

Prezado Sr. Timothy,

Poderíamos conversar via MSN na segunda a noite?

Muito Grato.

Henrique.

I sometimes live on the bleeding edge of technology. Some like to call this being an “early ad

I sometimes live on the bleeding edge of technology. Some like to call this being an “early adapter.” Others think I should join a support program with a twelve-step program. My office has a room devoted to hardware and software I’ve bought, tried out, experimented upon, recommended, and sometimes even installed for my consulting company clients, including quite a few law firms.

When I built a new house a few years ago, I just had to investigate the new energy conservation devices, which could lower my utility bills, reduce my “carbon footprint,” and save the world. Likewise, I just had to experiment with design of home theatre and security system wiring, and the home computer network itself. I sometimes chatted about these with others in the neighborhood who were building houses, but didn’t mention one “enhancement” I had secretly worked on.

As the house was being built, I realized it would be more cost efficient to do all the wiring I would ever need, up front, rather than piece-mealing it later. I had been reading about the strides toward creation of working “smart houses” and other Web 3.0 applications, so I decided to make an investment in the future.

I worked with the various vendors installing my alarm system, home theater, cable, phone and other electronic systems, and got them to lay the groundwork for me. Then, being the bleeding edge geek I am, I began my own tinkering, gradually adding new components, as they entered beta stage. Fortunately, one of my clients is an appliance company, so I was able to make some relatively good purchases and get great deals on some important components.

When Thanksgiving came up on my calendar this year, I decided it was time to give the new system a trial run. I really wasn’t ready for a full-blown trial run, but one of my sons knows a lot more about this stuff than I do, so I figured if I got some of the system up and running, he would be in town at Thanksgiving to give me a hand debugging the parts.

This was also going to be the first year with multiple grandchildren, in addition to some of our friends who had become annual Thanksgiving dinner guests. That meant we had to get out the extra leaf for the dining room table, but it really meant the logistics were starting to add up to the point of being almost unmanageable. The question was whether or not I somehow pull off this Web 3.0 Thanksgiving plan in time to really help.

I got out my copy of Microsoft Project and went to work. This had to be a collaborative effort and, fortunately, seemed to be an interesting challenge for the partners in the project. Admittedly, I felt a little like Chevy Chase in one of my favorite movies of the season, Christmas Vacation, trying to pull off wiring the house to win the neighborhood Christmas lighting prize, but eventually, I finished and it was time to send out the invitations.

I decided to start with an old favorite, evite®, so I could at least try to track who would really be coming and send guest updates in a burst. It also helped get a few other issues out of the way early, such as special dietary concerns of some of the guests, coordinating menu items for those who always insist on bringing Aunt Tillie’s famous recipe, etc. I know there are lots of invitation applications out there, but since I’ve used evite® for many events and was familiar with the foibles and periodic “surprises” as it continues to develop, it was an easy choice for alerting guests to “save the date,” and then to harvest the data as we got closer to The Big Day.

Like many American families, we have established some traditions over the years. That meant timing of various parts of the event had to be precise. With folks arriving at various times, subject to last minute variables, this was always a challenge. I thought it would be interesting to see if a preview of a Web 3.0 world would be any better.

Once the first round of evite® responses started to come back and we had our first estimate of the number of guests and basic menu, I was able to get some online counsel for wine pairings with the various dishes, estimate the number of bottles needed, and place my order. One task completed.

About the time we were building our new house, I happened to read Christoper Allbritton’s story in Popular Mechanics, Control Your Appliances Over The Internet. I tried to remain mindful of Albritton’s reference to the “Terminator” sci-fi movies, and scenario where the fictional military artificial intelligence defense system, Skynet, takes over for humans and then starts to eradicate them as a potential threat. Since my plans didn’t include any air-to-ground missiles, I decided that LG Electronics’ HomNet was a good place to start. After all, their home page says:

LG HomNet is the total home network solution providing a convenient secure, joyful and affluent lifestyle anywhere and anytime with the integration of various digital home appliances. LG HomNet makes the future lifestyle into reality. LG HomNet will usher into a future lifestyle that used to be possible only in the movies and the imagination, together with ultra-high speed Internet, artificial intelligence, and advanced robots.

LG HomNet, a home network system developed by state-of-the-art technologies from LG Electronics!

You will be provided with a new pleasant and convenient digital living culture of the 21st century through intelligent networking of all-digital appliances, agnostic to any wired and wireless communication technology.

We invite you to a new living culture which has been dreamed about by the whole human race.

Aside from the grammatical issues in LG’s statement, and hoping their use of the term “agnostic” was meant to be closer to the original Greek, as opposed to the more recent religious interpretation, who could resist something, which would provide a convenient, secure, joyful, and affluent lifestyle, anywhere and anytime? Not me.

After taking the HomNet Experience online, I started with the refrigerator/server, adding the ovens, microwaves, and some other appliances in the kitchen. This proved a handy way to coordinate keeping foods chilled, cooking the hot foods, timing the warming of those foods in the food queue, and even providing a shopping list tied into the menu archive, and the family calendar, which is always visible on the door of the refrigerator. This was also great to avoid the previously inevitable, last minute return trips to the grocery for an item that didn’t make it on the old paper grocery lists. Now we could take remote inventory from the store, to make sure we really had walnuts for the dressing or enough whipping cream for the pie.

Once the big day came, we could actually sit back for the first time, and just wait for last minute evite® updates on arrival times. Granted, as James Gunter points out in his law enforcement blog post, Twitter is Not the Holy Grail of Emergency Notification, using Twitter alone as an alarm system is dangerous, but if only the turkey is at state, this may be sufficient. With our Twitter early warning system tied into the day’s calendar on our refrigerator, we were notified, in order, that: our oldest son and girlfriend were on their way; younger son and new grandchildren would be slightly delayed, due to a diaper change; our daughter’s friends would have to make a stop to pick something up on the way; and my old law firm partner and family would be here “soon.”

“Soon” always had a special meaning for my old partner’s arrival, but having done an earlier blog post on the Twitter Geoloction API, I had convinced him to start “tweeting.” With a little advanced coordination, I was able to tell they had not left home yet, was alerted when they started to move in our direction, and a new ETA appeared next to their family avatar on our handy refrigerator/server/message center. Our voice recognition system and data-to speech-program even announced that guests were arriving, making those already inside our “smart house” feel like they were early guests at a presidential ball, where dignitaries are announced as they enter. This was particularly helpful in marshalling the troops to help get the new twins inside before the fresh air woke them up.

Really Cool, New Sixth-Sense Technology was the pride and joy of my new system, even if it was still a beta version. The cobbled aggregation consists of off-the-shelf, Web cam, portable battery-powered 3-D projection system, and other devices connected to the user’s cell phone. The system’s ability to project keypads and other tools onto any surface, to make it a device like those used by Tom Cruise in Minority Report, proved very helpful in the game room. The RFID tracking system allowed us to locate the kids who were tardy in departure from the media room, turning down the heat in that room during dinner, and returning them to the appropriate spot in the movie they were watching upon their return.

We were able to use all this technology to time when dinner started, so the parents of the little kids enjoyed the rare treat of being able to eat in relative peace, coordinating with nap and infant feeding schedules for that optimal state of “joyfulness” promised by the appliance company. It also allowed us to finish before the preselected football games appeared on the adult’s monitors, cartoons came up for the tikes, and video games for the rest of the younger kids.

The background music, which gradually came up as we sat down to eat was a nice touch, as was the list of conversation points, which appeared in the wireless 3D i-glasses some had elected to wear. The ability to look through the glasses at a guest, allow the facial recognition and identification system enough time to identify the guest, and then call up conversation topics suggested by their Facebook references, and other social media search results, including their blogs, proved interesting, if not a little too revealing for some.

The great meal now being history, we can review the video record of the whole event to work on ways to improve it for next year. Using the facial recognition and identification system, we can piece together the level of “joyfulness” for each family member and guest, item-by-item, and plug these back into project software to start planning next year’s event.

The transportation alert module paid off in the first year, letting my oldest son and girlfriend know the system was well on the way to rerouting them back to Chicago, due to a snow storm interrupting their original plans to fly back into O’Hare. The placemats, inspired by some iPhone apps, allowed us to check just how much food each family member and guest had consumed, and for those who desired it, their iPhone apps would now “remind” them of the exercise plan the system had outlined to return them to normal size, including, of course, the appropriate level of play on their Wii Fit™ system at home.

Now, on to Cyber Monday Shopping.

Speaking at the Internet Governance Forum in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, Tim Berners-Lee announced today that World Wide Web Foundation is open for business. World Wide Web Foundation was created with W3C’s support in September 2008, and focuses on advancing the Web as a medium that empowers people to make positive social and economic change.

Web Foundation’s first two projects will help people to better leverage the Web to support agriculture in near-desert environments in Africa, and empowering youth in inner-city centers by teaching them how to create Web content. Such projects are consistent with W3C’s own work to ensure that One Web is available to all, including work on mobile Web for social development, accessibility, and internationalization. W3C looks forward to collaborating with World Wide Web Foundation to further lower barriers to access and to promote the development of free and open Web standards.

o JCC y APIs REST o XML
o JSON
o Algunos aspectos de redes sociales
o Mashup (aplicación web híbrida)

• General:

It’s been a while since I mentioned on the Studio one of my pet subjects, the semantic web. But that does not mean that I haven’t been reading anything and everything I find on it. I found an interesting article published a few days ago at Government Computing News discussing worldwide databases and linked data and peppered with interesting information from Tim Berners-Lee, that crazy guy who invented the Web. Thought I might share it.

Berners Lee is discussing how the Web’s links can be further manipulated to astounding effect by coding data for the Web in a linked format. If this was to happen, the “‘net” effect would be a worldwide database that machines can read. The coding framework for creating linked data is called Resource Description Framework (RDF). The BBC, BestBuy and eBay are among the early adopters of RDF.

The push now is for governments to take up the charge and utilize linked data to move us closer to the global goal. The value add is the difference between making the data available and making the data available for processing and manipulation and, thusly, far more usuable. Coding the data with RDF allows browsers and other applications to automatically pull that data from disparate web sites to make connections between concepts. For example (from the article), if you are looking at a desired address on one web page and then move to another web page to book a flight, the address information from the prior page will be automatically provided to you on the new page, without you have to cut, copy, paste or otherwise manually mark the data.

RDF works because it breaks that data out into elements that can be associated. The data gets three nodes – subject, predicate and object. Each element gets its own uniform web location via uniform resource identifiers. It works much like an extension to an HTML metatag, the stepping stones read by browsers inserted on web pages. The extensions could even be rendered like hashtags, a concept familiar to Twitter users. The hashtag would signal a universal concept that could be read by browsers and used to create the data links.

The concepts behind Linked Data and the semantic web are not easy for web developers and site developers, let alone the average Jo, to grapple with. But the ultimate result will be a web experience that is simple and graceful. Machines will assist in making connections between data that the human operator may never have considered. And to the researcher in me, that is a concept too exciting to pass up!

Forgive my geeky diversion! Let’s hope that some of our venerable web legal research resources consider taking up the charge by grafting some RDF goodness onto their data.

Thoughts on Sir Tim Berners-Lee, mobility and beyond at the Web 2.0 Summit 2009

Tim Berners-Lee at the Web 2.0 Summit - "We didn't call it 'World-Wide' Web for nothing"

London schoolboy Tim Berners-Lee was just 14 when two computers talked to each other for the very first time 40 years ago via ARPANET, the predecessor to the Internet. It’s safe to say this turned out to be a bigger deal than anyone knew at the time (except maybe young Tim).

When he first conceived of the World Wide Web 20 years later (in 1989), Berners-Lee knew it had to be a fully open, public-domain platform. As he explained in conversation with Tim O’Reilly at the Web 2.0 Summit last week in San Francisco, “otherwise it would not have worked.” The system had to be really flexible, without proprietary formats and constraints, “a very creative read-write space, like a sandbox — a group collaborative thing,” to enable it to spread its usefulness across the whole world as he had conceived it. “It had to be — we didn’t call it ‘World-Wide’ Web for nothing.”

One score, the change of a millennium, and the “versioning” of WWW to “Web 2.0″ later, the Web is still trying to fulfill that promise. Berners-Lee acknowledges that Web platforms and blogs and wikis have approached that collaborative vision, but in an awesome perspective in his session which closed the conference, he reminded us that “only 20-25 percent of humanity actually uses the Web at all.”

While this begs the question how and whether the Web should extend to blanket the other three-quarters of the world, if you turn it around you can see that Web 2.0, now a kindergartner at five years old, is ready to be and continues to be itself disrupted through its reach — and hopefully by those who will need it the most.

The most recent, most potent disruptions are happening in the mobile, realtime, and local spaces and hence into the “everywheres and everyones” through the corners of the Earth. This year’s Summit did not disappoint along those lines both in terms of real news, cutting-edge developments, and a little bit of whimsey along the way.

On the local, realtime front, with a big kick in the pants by Twitter, the major search players are paying a lot of attention to the “everywhere, everyone, AND all at once” phenomenon (read Jeremiah Owyang’s good wrap from a business perspective on the related Google / Microsoft announcements). But one thing that was almost lost in the hype — almost buried in Marissa Mayer’s surprise announcement of Google Social Search — is the local aspect. Through the years we’ve witnessed the evolution of “finding things” from Browse (Yahoo) –> to Search (Google) –> to Share (Facebook) — and now we approach the next phase: all of the above, then add “Where” — and then EveryWhere.

Take a good look at the demo: first the Twitter-dare-I-say-Google-open-social-graph announcement has to do with bringing the particular GeoLocation of New Zealand closer to home, via your social circle. But toward the end of the demo Google solidifies the geo/local aspect. Says Mayer, “You can see how analyzing these social networks can really improve the overall relevance, comprehensiveness, and quality of the results. And one of the biggest pockets we’ve seen where this can really enhance your search experience is on local information. Has one of your friends already seen that play? Have they been to that restaurant or have they been to that hotel?”

This is important because local may literally be “the last mile” (thanks @donambridge…) of the three-quarters-of-the-rest-of-the-world for Web search, which starts to look more and more “old-school” the more people’s blogs are visited because of Twitter instead of because of Google.

Add the mobile component to realtime+local, and you have the game-changing combination. Mobile is the “incremental driver of Internet user / usage growth” according to the always-excellent Morgan Stanley’s Mary Meeker session (PDF). “Next generation platforms (social networking + mobile) are driving unprecedented change in communications and commerce.”

Via mobile, the native intelligence of your (social) presence is flipping the “reaching beyond 25% of the world” question sideways — so that it’s not (just) about the fact that mobile reaches further, but mobile allows us to change the reach entirely.

Path Intelligence: Mapping the audience

Cell phone signals render humans as sensors (watch the amazing inventions on this panel), via multiple sensors in your iPhones, via where you are when, and via what you are sharing — explicitly or implicitly — about it when you are there. From the “implicit crowdsourcing” that provides traffic and route information via maps and real-time feeds of Waze, to the entertaining audience statistics (and more) that Path Intelligence could glean by our (cell-phone-enabled) presence, to tagged, geocoded images that help you find invasive plants, to the incredible concept of “telemicroscopy for disease disease diagnosis” (CellScope), to the portal ultrasound gadget that GE’s Jeff Immelt brought with him to more… Needless to say, there is a huge wealth of innovation happening in the realtime mobile sphere.

Beyond mobile (since mobile infrastructure is not yet everywhere), we also saw some amazing satellite innovations at the Summit. Walter Scott of DigitalGlobe stopped by to give us a demo and some intriguing ideas about satellite imagery that we can now refresh two to three times a day. Perhaps Arthur C. Clarke did not even visualize this!

Aaron Koblin -- Visualizing Amsterdam SMS messages

And speaking of visualization, some of the innovations coming out of the piles of data we get through all these mobile, real-time, world-wide sensors can be very, very beautiful. Aaron Koblin, an artist specializing in data visualization who introduced GAFFTA (Grey Area Foundation for the Arts) while at the Summit, has an amazing sandbox of visualizations.

So while only one in four people have ever touched the World Wide Web at all, both the Web and these people are going further than ever before. Tim Berners-Lee advises us to concentrate on the emergent trends of GeoLocation and a move from Web pages to mobile and apps, as well as the upcoming standard of HTML5. And one key takeaway from him is that we need to “make sure the Web is designed appropriately for other cultures as well.”

And while we’re at it, let’s make sure we’re listening to those other cultures and watching for the beauty in the great big pile of data, because “the other 75%” of everywhere has at least as big a chance of disrupting the Web as the Web has of disrupting it.

Did You Know Who is Find INTERNET for the First Time ?

Berners-Lee appreciated as the creator of Internet. Web world that have been created by himself already gave great changes for all people in this world quickly.

That’s all began on 1989. Berners-Lee made a proposal for global hypertext production, that would be named World Wide Web (WWW). On that time, the comn louder of Physics Faculty Queen’s College, Oxford University, London was working in the office of erudite data distribution CERN in Jenewa, Swiss.

Berners-Lee * who found internet for the first time .

He was starting his project on October 1990. Twelve months later, WWW could be runed in CERN environment. On summer 1991, WWW have been opening widely in network of internet.

During spanning year of 1991 until 1993, Berners-Lee continued to make web to be showed optimally. He made scheme for web pages and coordinated all inputs from internet users. He also knowing as the first man who made browser, server, and protocol key for internet. His work’s result in URL address production, HTTP using, and HTML code proven succeed and can be greatprogress in development of web technology.

Because of his commendable, Berners-Lee appreciated Millenium Technology Prize in Helsinky, Finlandia on Juny 15th, 2007. That appreciated is the first time of present equal to US$ 1,2 million (is about 10,4 billion rupiah) for Berners-Lee.

‘The double slash, though a programming convention at the time, turned out to not be really necessary, Mr. Berners-Lee explained. Look at all the paper and trees, he said, that could have been saved if people had not had to write or type out those slashes on paper over the years — not to mention the human labor and time spent typing those two keystrokes countless millions of times in browser address boxes.

Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee, was born on the 8th june 1955 in London, UK. He was graduated in phisycs from the university of Oxford in the year 1976. We can say that he was one of the inventors of the World Wide Web as he first made the proposal for it in March 1989. However, the first general ideas were outlined before Tim Berners-Lee ’s proposal. He became sir in 2004 as was knighted by Queen Elizabeth.

He is the director of the world wide web consortium, which developes the technologies to lead the web to its full potential. He is the founder of the world wide web foundation as well, and a senior researcher and a holder of the 3comb Founders Chair at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. While working at CERN, he proposed a project based on the hypertext, to make easier the sharing and updating information among all the reasearchers.

In 1989 he realized that internet was one of the biggests inventions in the world, so he decided that it would be a good idea if the hypertext and the internet became one. That’s why he proposed to do so, giving birth to the World Wide Web, the most used device or computer application in the world nowadays. His first proposal of the web wasn’t so well known or recognized,so with the help of Robert Cailliau they achieved to make a better version of it which was accepted by their manager.

In 1994 he joined the scientifict laboratory of the computation and artificial intelligence of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, that’s why he moved to the EE. UU were he started the W3C which is currently under his direction.

In 2001 he became part of the Royal Society and he was awarded several time with different kind of prices such as the Japan Prize, the Prince of Asturias Foundation Prize, the Millennium Technology Prize and Germany’s Die Quadriga award.

He is the author of “Waving the web”.

Tim eta honen taldekideek HTML lengoaia, HTTP protokoloa eta URL web-ean objektuen aurkitze sistema sortu zituzten.

Berners-Lee CERNen egin zuen lan eta hipertestuan oinarritutako proiektu bat egin zuen ikerlarien artean, informazioa trukatu eta gaurkotzeko. ENQUIRE izeneko programa bat ere sortu zuen, argitara eraman ez zuena.

CERN Europako Internet nodorik handiena zen 1989.urtean eta Berners-Leek Internet eta hipertestua (HTTP ETA HTML) elkartzeko aukera bikaina ikusi zuen; ondoren elkartze horretatik World Wide Web sortuko zena. Enquire sisteman erabilitako antzerako ideiak erabili zituen World Wide Web-a sortzeko.

Tim Berners-Leek azaldu egiten du nolako hazkundean izan duen sareak azkenengo hamar urte hauetan. Hasiera batean, sarea Internetduen azpiegiturari esker zabaldu zen. Timek sarearen idea izan zuenean, 80. hamarkadan, inbestigazio unibertsitate eta institutuetako ordenagailuak haien artean konektaturik zeuden informazioa trukatzeko. Berners-Leek dioen moduan, sarea oso azkar hedatu zen eta edonork sortu dezake zerbitzari bat baimenik eskatu gabe.

Azkenik, Berners-Leek hainbat sari irabazi ditu urte hauetan zehar.

Tim Berners-Lee was born the 8th of June of 1955 (aged 54) in the United Kingdom and became famous for inventing the World Wide Web.

He graduated in The Queen’s College, in Oxford and he started working in CERN (the European Particle Physics Laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland) as a software consultant, but this was only a temporary work so he had to leave. However, some years later he came back with a more permanent job. In 1989, he submitted a proposal to develop an information system that would create a web of information. Although anyone listened to his idea, he decided to carry on working on it, and that’s when he made the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (Also known as HTTP). Of course, he also had to do something which would read this HTTP, so he created the WWW. This hypertext pages had Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) format, and using this, he created the first server ever, which was called ‘info.cern.ch.’

CERN was still not very interested in his idea so he decided to turn to the Internet community. Making the WWW available for the Internet, he managed to get people to try it and make they own servers. After that, those people linked their page to CERN’s info page. This is how everything started. What started being just a simple idea to connect some scientist around the internet, now has more than 100 millions of websites.
So we can really say that the WWW is one of the most important inventions ever, and that it’s used by millions of people all around the world.

His job made him win lots of awards, and these are them:

Tim Berners-Lee has made one of his not-too frequent posts upon the topic of e-government. In fact

Tim Berners-Lee has made one of his not-too frequent posts upon the topic of e-government. In fact it’s not really e-government its about putting data online. The article is on the W3C web site.

This is probably highly appropriate since the W3C eGovernment Interest Group has reached its latest phase and published a draft charter.

With everyone working on data handling and information management, what I’d like to see is that we can use linked data, as envisaged by Berners-Lee but in a coordinated manner, so that the tools we emply internally can produce the data for external use by ourselves (which we may not need when external hosts can do it) and others.

Anyway, Berners-Lee provides lots of suggestions plus some ‘do’s and don’ts’. Lets do some.

The same metter is picked up in a piece in the McKinsey Quarterly entitled E-government 2.0, which reinforces the method but accepts the cultural hurdles to be leaped or stumbled over. Very importantly for me, Baumgarten and Chul, also consider it in a multichannel context by stating the need to “provide consistent experience and share learning across channels.”

*********************************************************************

If you are interested and, preferably, in UK local government please complete the survey, it doesn’t take long at all. I’ll keep feeding back through these pages, which are also covered by localgov.co.uk and PSF.

The New York Times o The Guardian ya no son solo diarios.
