That is going to be a rather specific blog entry, but today I want to go into detail about three manga-series that would make great video games. Before going any further I´d like to explain that manga and anime come hand in hand with video games, that is what I believe. That is, if you´r fond of Japanese video games. Sure, typical western games don´t feature any resemblance of Japanese comics and cartoons. Maybe, though, that is also why I prefer Japanese video games, as they generally feature more stylized visuals, maybe thanks to the country´s heavy art industry. Not to stray further away, I´ll be talking about Gantz, Blame! and Berserk.

If you watched the Gantz-anime that unfortunately didn´t get a third season and afterwards decided to read the manga for more, you know: This series went from the weird to the epic. The series´ concept would be rather easy to make into a video game (tbh there even might already be a game, but it definitely wasn´t released in Europe). Simply throw the player into a new mission each time and have him face all kinds of new, bizarre aliens. There´s not that much about specific gameplay details, as it´d be a simple third-person-shooter, maybe with some climb-mechanics and Crysis-like super powers. It´s the multiplayer part that counts. I´d imagine there to be two kinds of multiplayer: First one would let other players join your game on-the-fly, taking on missions together. The other mode would be even more reminiscent of the series: You gather a group of friends that you start the game with. Then the game puts you into super-weird and hard missions. Whoever survives the longest wins, it´s that simple. There´s really no other franchise I could see work that well as a online-heavy video game. The mixture of cool art style, super powers, weird aliens, team-play and mission-based gameplay could make for hundreds of hours. Maybe think of the Monster Hunter-franchise, but with a lot more fun, involving combat-system, a mixture of Zelda, Crysis and Devil May Cry. Yeah, that´d be fun.

Just as fun as the next manga-franchise could be when turned into a video game. Whoever doesn´t already know Blame!, let me explain: The main character is called Killy and he´s traveling around within this thing called Mega Structure. It´s some scifi-series where the whole world is covered by, well, buildings, if you want to call that structures that. Killy´s mission is to find network genes from before the mutation. I forgot why he searched those but it doesn´t matter for the moment. This manga doesn´t feature a lot of words, and even that´s quite an understatement. The Blame!-manga´s strength is its incredible atmosphere. You´re there in such a strange, bizarre environment, not knowing what´ll happen next. There are those dangerous silicon creatures, the “bad guys” of the series. Weird, artificial looking…robots? that will kill you or any human being. Speaking of human beings, time has gone by that long that there are different kinds of human beings. So it happens that Killy, who´s just a normal human (well, not totally normal), meets other human-like beings that look just like him…but are double his size. Mentioned Mega Structure consists of almost uncountable layers, each of which is like its own whole world. So, what would a video game about this look like? See, there´s this gun Killy is using, the Graviton Beam Emitter. Let me just say that this is the coolest weapon I´ve ever seen in any manga, anime or video game. That gun doesn´t need ammunition, it draws its energy from its user. More importantly, though, it´s capable of destroying almost anything. It shoots a rather slim, unspectacular energy beam, but that beam breaks through anything that comes across its way. It can deflect enemy weapon´s beams and it can destroy walls and layers that nothing else in the world of Blame! could even scratch. It needs to be that powerful, though, because it´s the only effective weapon against these silicon creatures. So how I´d imagine a Blame!-video game is that you wander around in quiet, weird, bizarre environments for most of the time, a lot like ICO. Whenever an enemy appears, it´d be a boss battle. No meaningless minions that serve no purpose but to lengthen the game. Gameplay-wise it´d be about evading the enemy´s attack to concentrate your characters focus, and then, at a crucial point, fire the gun to one-hit whatever enemy. What gameplay would be like? That is easy: Like Devil May Cry, but not as flashy, more down-to-earth movements and a lot more dirty.

The last of the three, Berserk, would be my personal favorite game ever. This is a franchise that needs WiiMotionPlus. Just give me direct control over Gut´s gigantic sword, throw me into the depths of hell and let me slay the most bizarre, creepiest monsters there´ve ever been. One problem of MotionPlus is that it cannot simulate the weight of a sword, so whenever you swing the wiimote in WiiSports Resort it is breaking the immersion of swinging a real sword. A Berserk-game wouldn´t have that problem because Guts…is awesome. Thing is, he can swing is giant sword super fast and with the highest durability of any manga-character ever. That´s why it totally fits into the game´s context to be able to swing a sword that effortlessly. There have been Berserk-games in the past, but I´d really love to see one featuring MotionPlus, and also one that goes more after the experience of the moment instead of just retelling the known story. Throw me into the world of the Eclipse and let´s see how long I can survive. That´s the Berserk-game I´d love to play. Gameplay-wise? If there´ll be a Zelda Wii-game released I think that will be a great example of how a Berserk-game should play like (with a sword 3 or 4 times as long as Link´s, haha).

Now, what all three of these manga-series and my “turning-them-into-video games“-wishes share is that they offer the greatest, deepest atmosphere possible. Throw away crappy stories, throw away cut-scenes, throw away annoying gameplay-limiting stuff. Just…get me into this game, let me explore on my own and let me do it how I want to do it. And that´s really what it´s all about. All those games that are hyped right now, Modern Warfare 2, Uncharted 2 or New Super Mario Bros. Wii are, in the end, nothing but brainless time killers. Do some tasks for 6-7 hours, then the game´s over and you haven´t seen anything you didn´t see before. Not even talking about “having experienced anything new”. Video gamers always try to paint their hobby as a form of art, expressing how it´s matured, but the whole medium is still very young, still very unexplored. Nearly all modern video games follow a pattern that games from ten, fifteen or twenty years ago created. As long as there´s not try to break free from that pattern there cannot be any kind of “maturing”, and the whole art-argument will stay a difficult topic. There are exceptions, like ICO, Endless Ocean or “The Path-game” (google that one, it´s great), but those are infinitely outnumbered by hyped blockbuster-games that keep doing the same and the same again. And from the look at even the most hardcore-internet boards, gamers don´t want that to change. Which I find saddening. Maybe it just needs more time to get games into this direction of a more direct experience. But at the moment we´re rather heading towards video games that I have a hard time calling them “games” at all. “Cinematic” is the big hyped thing of the time and it´s been only going stronger with the years. I remember when I bought the first Tomb Raider on DVD (yeah, shame on me) there was this interactive game where you could move Lara with the buttons of your DVD-player´s remote and she would go and say stuff and whatever. Maybe that´s the future all those self-proclaiming hardcore-gamers want. All I know is: I do not want such a gaming future. I wanna play and interact as directly with the ingame-world as possible. And damn, would those three manga-series be great as video games.

Après une petite période de disette, suite à des difficultés financières, je reprends enfin gout aux mangas (beaucoup moins les animes par contre). C’est dingue de voir à quel point quelques tomes peuvent redonner du baume au coeur.

Du coup, j’avais l’embarras du choix concernant les mangas que je devais continuer, mettre de côté ou commencer. Ce ne fut pas un choix aisé mais étant attentif à vos avis, j’ai tenu compte de ce que vous m’avez dit. Les titres vous aiguilleront

Voici donc la liste de mes lectures mangas du moment:

- Hellsing: après maintes charges, j’ai cédé et j’ai bien fait ^^ Même si le dessin m’a un peu déçu sur le moment, Alucard balaie à lui seul tous les petits défauts.

- Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle: reprise avoir lu que le manga était terminé. Je m’accroche car c’est chaud de comprendre.

- Berserk: inévitablement ^^

- XXXHolic: cross over de Tsubasa mais bien mieux à mon sens.

- Zetman: bourrin, gore, psychologique, tout ce que j’aime. Un peu dans la lignée de Berserk.

- Family Compo: je me le procure un par un, même si je les ai déjà lu.

- Fate Stay Night: le premier tome est sorti, enfin.

- Sing Yesterday for Me: mais bon, faut attendre longtemps entre chaque tome.

Kentaro Miura – Dark Horse – 2009 – 34+ volumes

I got really pumped while trying to explain Berserk to someone today, so I was glad that the newest volume came in yesterday.

Now, if you had told me that I would be enjoying Berserk for the cuteness factor awhile ago, even two or three volumes ago, I would have thought you were lying.  But here I am, with an entire volume of Guts and Schierke forming the world’s most adorable team, and I really can’t get enough.  I nearly died when Guts gave her a piggyback ride.  I see now why Chica Umino drew an alternate cover to volume 33.  It just fits.

Part of me thinks I should be more creeped out, but the key factor is that there is nothing (absolutely nothing) sexual, even implied, in their interactions.  For Berserk, this shows an incredible amount of restraint.  Schierke has her schoolgirl crush on Guts, but Guts sees her as a valuable ally, and treats her like an equal in the team, which is a wonderful contrast since he’s the gigantic strong guy with a metal arm and huge sword, and she’s just a little girl.

Those two steal the show here, and a big part of the volume was a fight where Schierke… was magically along for the ride in Guts’ mind as he fought in the Berserker armor.  With her there, he gets to stay himself while he fights, and she gets to offer adorable encouragement and worry about him getting hurt, with him just glancing up and not saying anything.  Nobody worries about Guts like Schierke does, and I think he is taken aback by the pleas to keep well.  Aww.

There’s also monsters, which you would expect.  The Kushan empire is invading the city, and in addition to an entire gigantic army of… well, monster soldiers that Schierke and Guts dispatch (complete with a scene where Guts runs for cover with Schierke under one arm and Isidro under the other), there is also a Kushan magic user that is able to summon gigantic, powerful familiars.  There’s also a kraken the size of the entire harbor thrown in for good measure, and an apostle who’s face just appears in the clouds and doesn’t have a physical body.  Guts easily outsmarts his techniques.

There’s also a great “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” scene towards the end.  I was delighted by Guts’ response, but honestly, I would have been pleased with either answer under those circumstances.

Mostly this volume was just fights with no exposition, and I still loved every page.  That this volume was still so cute even when gigantic monsters were being slaughtered most of the time says quite a bit about this series, I think.

Oh, Berserk.  Don’t ever stop being awesome.

C’est assez difficile à faire comme liste, étant donné que beaucoup n’ont qu’un grand manga à leur actif. Voilà pourquoi je limite cette liste à 5 noms, qui représentent une sorte de best of.

Le détail des noms sera bien moins détaillé que mes autres listes, étant donné que les informations manquent, mais je mettrai au moins leur plus grands hits. Ne vous attendez pas à de monstrueuses surprises mais je suis sûr que vous connaissez tous les noms ou presque

Sans plus attendre, les gagnants sont:

- Kei Toume: ca vous étonne, n’est-ce pas? ^^ Je ne la présente plus et si vous voulez une liste de ses mangas, je vous renvoie à l’article consacré à cette mangaka de génie.

- Tsukasa Hojo: la non plus pas de surprise. Le maitre des maitres, au dessin parfait. Je vous renvoie aussi à son article.

- Clamp: un groupe de 4 femmes, aux mangas touchants, enfantin et sérieux à la fois. Leurs plus grands titres sont: Chobits, XXXHolic, Tsubasa Réservoir Chronicle, Card Captor Sakura, X.

- Yua Kotegawa: manga méconnu en France mais d’un talent certain comme le prouve Détenu 042, l’excellent Arcana ou encore Anne Freaks. Je vous encourage à découvre ses oeuvres.

- Tetsuya Tsutsui: habitué aux one-shot, c’est un grand déjà.. Je citerai les très bons Duds Hunt, Reset ou encore Manhole.

Il y a d’autres mangakas de talent comme Kentaro Miura (Berserk), Shin Takahashi (Larme Ultime) mais ils n’ont qu’un seul hit à leur actif pour le moment. Si par un miracle ils parviennent à refaire un manga aussi bon, je gage qu’ils feront partis de mon top 5.

The most annoying type of anime fans out there are the ones that spawn off of franchises that stray from the original source material. A few examples of franchises I’m talking about include things like Berserk, Princess Resurrection, Devilman, Bokurano, etc. Basically franchises that take a different approach with their adaptions from the original source material. Does that mean one is better than the other? No, because in the end it’s your opinion on the matter. However, every discussion I see on a property that strays from the original source material ends up the same. It starts out by someone saying that the original source material is better than the adaption, followed by belittling those that haven’t read the original source material or suggesting that they can’t enjoy the adaption because of the changes. A lot of these “the adaption sucks, the original is better” arguments are really no different than saying “the book is better than the movie.” It just comes off as really obnoxious and it’s like saying you’re better than others because you’ve read the original source. However, what people fail to realize is that people can be fans of one medium or the other (or both) and still be fans of the franchise. The e-penis contest that goes on with fans to see who is a bigger fan is really annoying, and truthfully I think it steers a lot of people away from getting into the original source material. It’s one thing to acknowledge that the original source material is different from a given adaption, but it’s another when you’re suggesting that one can’t enjoy the adaption or implying that they aren’t real fans because of it.

“Götz von Berlichingen (1480–1562), a German knight, was the leader of a band of mercenary soldiers and had a reputation as a Robin Hood figure. In 1504, his right arm was struck by an enemy cannon fire and a prosthetic iron arm was developed to replace it.”

“He had a new, artificial hand made out of iron, a sort of glove which he attached to the stump on his lower arm. It was fitted with cogs that enabled him to move the fingers.

Legend has it that Götz – even with his iron hand – still had so much power wielding a sword that his opponents soon realised they had nothing to laugh about.”

• Autor: Kentaro Miura

Kentaro Miura, nació en Chiba (Japón) el 11 de julio de 1966.

Desde pequeño soñaba con convertirse en mangaka y estudió bellas artes.

Al terminar la carrera trabajó con Tetsuo Hara y con Buronson (dibujante y guionista, respectivamente, de El Puño de la Estrella del Norte).

En 1988 crea el prototipo de Berserk, de 48 páginas, con el que ganó el premio de la Escuela de Cómic Manga.

En 1989 se publica el primer capítulo de Berserk en la revista Young Animal.

Hoy en día sigue trabajando en esta serie, cuando se cumple su 20 aniversario, pero también se han ido publicando otras obras del autor mientras tanto, como por ejemplo Oh Roh y Oh Roh Den (en colaboración con Buronson) o Japón (también con Buronson).

Ha sido galardonado con el premio Award Cultural por Berserk en 2002.

• Manga: Berserk

La historia del manga es compleja y está dividida en varias partes.

Trata de un mundo en la época medieval llamado Midland.

La primera parte comienza cuando Gatsu, el protagonista, se acerca a un pueblo y entra en una taberna donde se da inicio una pelea. Está buscando a alguien. Ese alguien no tarda mucho en aparecer ante él.

Digamos que el principio es un adelanto a lo que será la historia del personaje, ya que al avanzar las páginas veremos como se empieza a contar su vida desde niño y como va creciendo y madurando.

La segunda parte nos enseña a Gatsu de niño. Sufrió los maltratos de su padre, se enfrentó a él y tubo que huir.

Conoció a una banda de jovenes, liderada por Griffith, el que será su máximo rival y amigo.

Puesto que se desenvuelve muy bien con la espada desde niño, no tiene problemas a destacar entre ellos, en la guerra que se libra en Midland.

Decide unirse a esta cuadrilla, denominada la Cuadrilla del Halcón. Van librando batallas y cada vez van siendo más famosos…

La tercera parte narra las hazañas de la cuadrilla. Hasta que llega un día en el que Griffith es apresado y torturado. Éste es liberado gracias a Gatsu y sus amigos. Griffith, usa un objeto para poder cumplir su sueño y es cuando la obra llega a un punto álgido: el eclipse.

A partir de aqui es cuando el protagonista busca venganza y se van dando lugar acontecimientos a cual más sorprendentes.

No contaré más cosas por no estropear la historia a nadie, tan solo recomendar su lectura y disfrute del manga, que en los primeros tomos no tiene un dibujo muy destacado pero que conforme va avanzando mejora hasta llegar a ser de una calidad digna de mención.

• Publicación del manga

En España fue publicado por Planeta deAgostini Cómics, pero no tubo éxito y se dejó de publicar.

Después salió a la palestra MangaLine Ediciones, editora malagueña, que lleva en el mundo del manga y los cómics cerca de siete años y empezó prometiendo mucho pero no ha tenido buen resultado.

En parte por la política que ha tenido con las publicaciones, con las negociaciones con las editoras japonesas y, sobre todo, con los problemas con su primera distribuidora, con la que llegó incluso a denunciarse mútuamente por los derechos de las series.

Todo esto influyó negativamente en sus publicacioneas y sobro todo en Berserk.

Los fans de la serie hemos sufrido los importantes retrasos y malas publicaciones por las malas formas de la editora.

Por sacar el producto a la venta con prisas, nos han ofrecido portadas de mala calidad, con colores degradados, imágenes con resolución pésima, maquetación con muchos fallos y calidad baja en algunas páginas del manga.

A día de hoy el último tomo publicado es el 30 y el siguiente no tiene previsión de salida.

En Japón ya van por el tomo 34 y sumando.

• El anime de Berserk

Fue publicado en 25 capítulos llegando hasta el acontecimiento del eclipse.

Con una animación aceptable y una historia bien narrada.

Se editó en España de la mano de Jonu Media en 6 volúmenes. Cuenta con algunos extras como álbum de fotos, bocetos, storyboard, ilustraciones, entrevista a Kentaro Miura, spots de televisión…

• Curiosidades del autor
  

Al principio reconoce que no tenía una idea sólida para el manga. Los volúmenes 1 al 5 los escribió cuando estaba estudiando.

Las novelas de fantasía Guin Saga escritas por Kaoru Kurimoto, con más de 100 volúmenes, fueron lo más influyente a la hora de crear Berserk.

Se ha inspirado en otros dibujos y películas como Excalibur o Conan el Bárbaro.

Le gustaba mucho Go Nagai y comenta que fue una gran influencia para él.

Para crear a los personajes de la Cuadrilla del Halcón se inspiró en sus compañeros de cuando estudiaba, sin embargo para Gatsu o Griffith no tubo modelo de inspiración.

Casualmente Gatsu le recuerda a Rutger Hauer, actor de la película Blade Runner.

Se confiesa fan de Tim Burton y de Sam Raimi.

Su película favorita de todos los tiempos es Star Wars.

I fan di Berserk, avevano lasciato il Guerriero nero Gaz alle prese con il suo lungo viaggio di vendetta, dopo gli eventi dell’eclissi.
Da quest’Estate, lentamente ma inesorabilmente girano per forum, siti dedicati, ecc, alcune immagini



Quello che è certo è che le immagini risalgono ad un anno fa e sono spuntate fuori dalla casa “Studio 4°C” (Steamboy, Spiggan, Memories, Animatrix).
Dopo anni dalla fine della prima serie animata e un fumetto la cui trama ormai avanza a colpi di magia e maledizioni ci voleva davvero una ventata di novità, in fin dei conti sono passati esattamente 20 anni dalla prima tavola disegnata di Berserk.
Speriamo al più presto di avere altre notizie in proposito…
