Music Fact #1: Burn To Shine is Ben Harper’s best album ever. Its spirit is the closest to human mind, it is lyrically sharp and musically brilliant.

Following on from our recent sporting icon debate, our attention has now turned to music. What is the best album of the horribly christened ‘noughties’?

Forget the boring Strokes and many other identikit, skinny jeaned indie bands. Forget even the remarkable come back by Take That. The album of the decade is the peerless and without comparison, Arcade Fire’s Funeral.

Released in the UK in early 2005, the album is all at once euphoric, empowering, mournful and joyful. As the title suggests, the album will take you through all the emotions – from the pain of losing a loved one, to the joyful feeling of celebrating someone’s life.

From the haunting piano keys and angular guitars of album opener, Neighborhood1 (tunnels), to the albums biggest single and most joyous 5 minutes, Rebellion (lies), ‘funeral’ takes the listener on an oral odyssey which reaffirmed the idea that indie can actually be quite interesting when it wants to be. Organs, xylophones, synths, accordions and mandolins are all thrown in to create the bands sonic soundscapes. The record sounds massive.

Vocalist Win Butler, with his yearning, heart-felt yelp, sounds as if he is a man on the edge of an emotional precipice. For evidence see the epic, gospel like, life affirming, emotional wreck that is Wake Up, the albums tour de force. An ode to children’s innocence, hear Butler wail as if his life depends on it : “If the children don’t grow up, our bodies get bigger but our heart’s get torn up, Were just a million little gods causin’ rain storms turnin’ ever good thing to dust.”

The album went gold by November 2005 in the UK and the band would receive even more success with the release of their second album ‘Neon Bible’ in 2007, but it is ‘Funeral’ that still remains their most potent work. Have you ever heard a more uplifting song than Rebellion or a song as stripped back, beautiful and lullaby-like as anne sans lumiere?

An indie album which is interesting and dangerous, celebratory and joyous, emotional and mournful, ‘Funeral’ is an album made up of many juxtapositions and contrasts, both musically and lyrically. It is by far and away the best album of the noughties and far more exciting than ‘ New York City Cops’.

D’une incroyable lenteur ce petit ovni, d’un tempo torturé, d’une musicalité des plus minimalistes et pourtant des plus hypnotiques, c’est ce que nous ramène d’une autre planète le groupe « The xx », quatuor de jeunots londonien d’une vingtaine d’années. On les imagine dans la tendance, dans la « vibe » comme qui dirait. Mais en fait, ce qu’ils font n’a rien à voir avec ce qu’on a déjà pu entendre. Non, non, pas d’influences mgmtienne, même pas. On appelle ça de la « pop atmosphérique » mais entre nous, on peut l’avouer, ça ne veut rien dire.

Ce qui est sûr, c’est qu’ils font un carton, que l’on classe déjà leur album (Selftitled) comme un des meilleurs de 2009, et le groupe comme la révélation de l’année (oui là on a le droit de penser à MGMT pour 2008). Ce qui est également sûr c’est que l’on n’a pas fini de se faire hypnotiser par cette bande-son étrange et surprenante.

A banda FLOW irá lançar uma nova coletânea incluindo suas melhores b-sides no dia 4 de novembro.

Simplesmente intitulado de “Coupling Collection”, a álbum possuirá ao todo 19 faixas, 15 delas foram escolhidas pelos próprios fãs da banda que votaram em suas faixas favoritas no site oficial da banda. As outras quatro são faixas bônus: uma é um remix da música “DAYS”; a segunda é “SUMMER FREAK”, lançada no mini-álbum “NUTS BANG!!!” em julho deste ano; a terceira é uma gravação em estúdio da música “Just do it!!!”, que é popular entre os fãs durante os shows do FLOW; e a última é uma versão regravada de uma música chamada “Fun Time Delivery”;

O álbum será lançado em versões regulares e limitadas. A versão limitada virá empacotada em um box de luxo e junto dele virá um DVD bônus contendo PV’s de “Fun Time Delivery (2009)”, “NUTS BANG!!!” e “SUMMER FREAK”; algumas cenas do “Natsuban”, programa da banda na web e terá também cenas algumas apresentações que a banda fez durante o ano.

2010年で結成15年目を迎える Foo Fighters が今年の11月３日にベストアルバムを出すそうですね。

その中で、新曲”Wheels” も入ってるそうです。

もう15年ですか。時間が過ぎるのは早いものですが、そういえば結構アルバムだしてましたね。デイブもあちこちからバンドの話があって忙しそうですが、彼の参加するバンドはチェックしていきたいものです。

This is another review that I am posting with multiple songs to listen to, because it simply is impossible to showcase just ONE song on most albums to display the album’s content, let alone trying to choose just one song on this album. That being said, on with the review!

Brand New — Daisy

What can be said about Brand New, the New York foursome that has shocked all of their fans with the breadth and dynamics of their music? What could you expect from them, after they ventured away from the sound they became so well-known for with Your Favorite Weapon and Deja Entendu? We got a glimpse of what they are truly capable of when they pushed the limits of their musical talents through The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me. So what else could they do to show us that they are still growing as a band?

Daisy (released 22 September 2009) shows us exactly how well the band can and does grow. It is the perfect continuation from The Devil and God musically, showing that they are able to write music that pushes the envelope not only of their musical ability, but the music scene as a whole.
Lyrically, the album does not venture too far off course from what you would expect to hear on a Brand New record. They still present the same themes of love, hate and relationships that they gave us on Your Favorite Weapon, Deja Entendu, and The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me. The first song, “Vices” (see below to listen), really wraps you in and makes you hold on for mercy as you begin this up and down roller coaster of an album. The song starts with what seems to be a 1920s speakeasy song with a woman singing over the hollow piano. As it continues, it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, until it shocks you with the screaming vocals of Jesse Lacey, the band’s frontman. What a brilliant way to open an album.

However, as they do not diverge too much from their previous lyrical content, they do mature with it. Songs like the title-track “Daisy” (see below to listen) show just how much they’ve matured lyrically from songs like “Jude Law and a Semester Abroad” from Your Favorite Weapon:

Tell all the English boys you meet
About the American boy back in the States
The American boy you used to date
Who would do anything you said

To go from words like that, such simple and straight-forward lyrics that are very clearly about a girl, to, 3 albums later, lyrics in songs like “Daisy” which are metaphorical, yet straight-forward at the same time:

Well if we take all these things and we bury them fast
And we’ll pray that they turn into seeds, to roots and then grass
It’d be all right, it’s all right, it’d be easier that way
Or if the sky opened up and started pouring rain
Like he knew it was time to start things over again
It’d be all right, it’s all right, it’d be easier that way

Brand New has said good-bye to their pop-punk sound of Deja Entendu and Your Favorite Weapon. Instead we find ourselves with a band who has experimented with different sounds to get something unique, while forcing themselves to push to the envelope. This album is worth a listen, and definitely worth your purchase. One of the top contenders for Best Album of 2009, hands down.

Foreword: I am posting two songs with this review, simply to show the dynamics of the album. This one is also going to be a little different than the last two. That being said, on with the review!

Thrice — Beggars

For those of you who know who Thrice is and have listened to them from Day 1, you might have mixed feelings about Beggars. For a band who used to be a post-hardcore screamo band, to a band who recently put out The Alchemy Indexes, a set of concept EPs based on the 4 elements of Alchemy (Earth, Air, Fire and Water), it seemed impossible for them to release anything different.

I was wrong. Beggars is so dynamic that I was simply blown away. For those who did listen to Thrice from day 1, imagine if The Artist in The Ambulance and Vheissu got together and had a child. Next imagine if Earth and Air from The Alchemy Indexes were one album, and had a child with The Illusion of Safety. Now lets imagine those two children had another child. That child would be Beggars.

For those who did NOT listen to Thrice from Day 1, this album is as good as any to pick up and listen to. It really shows the growth of the band from their early days, and it really shows Dustin Kensrue’s ability as a lyricist and an arranger. Example, from the song “The Weight”:

And come what may, I won’t abandon you or leave you behind
Because love is a loyalty sworn, not a burning for a moment.
And come what may, I will be standing right here by your side;
I won’t run away, though the storm’s getting worse
And there’s no end in sight.

This album, no matter how much growth it shows from Thrice, does pose a bit of a problem. It is a musically unique album. They overcome this brilliantly with tracks like “All The World Is Mad” (the opening track, see below to listen) and “Talking Through Glass” which really grab your attention and capture your interest with heavier guitars (relative to the rest of the album); they really scream at you (figuratively, as well as occasionally literally). The bass guitar is really prominent on this album too, which is different than a lot of artists these days who tend to bury the bass in the mix.

To counterbalance these “heavier” songs, they have songs like “Beggars” (again, see below to listen) and “Circles” which mellow out the album quite a bit. They focus more on the drum beat (which, in “Circles” is reminiscent of a hip-hop beat with a little bit of flair) and the melodic and harmonic guitar and vocal parts. The guitars give off a brighter tone while the vocals counter it with more of a drab, dark tone. It really meshes well and provides the perfect harmony. You know that feeling when you’re listening to a good song and it makes you want to close your eyes, bob your head, and sway with the music? Nearly this entire album makes you want to do that, with those foot-tappers and head-bangers thrown in there too. It truly is the most dynamic album I’ve heard in a long time.

In short, Beggars is a mind-blowing masterpiece that easily tops out my current chart, and is going to be hard-pressed to beat out for that #1 spot. Perhaps the next challenger, Daisy by Brand New, stands a chance? Either way, Beggars is worth the purchase, and it definitely will not disappoint.

fun. — Aim and Ignite

What comes to mind when you think of the boy-bands of the 1990s? Predictable? Cheesy? So horrible that you want to rip your ears right off your head?

Well. Excluding the latter abhorrent statement, predictability and cheesiness describe the boy-bands of the 1990s so much that artists followed with a slew of so-called “originality.” So much so that that originality became the norm.

Now lets revisit the mid-90s boy-band era. Only this time, lets add a band, keep the predictable cheesiness in the lyrics, and remove the screaming teenagers (for the time being), and you have fun. I mean this in both the literal sense of the word and the band name.

fun. is comprised of 3 members: Nate Ruess (formerly of The Format), Jack Antonoff (of Steel Train) and Andrew Dost (formerly of Anathallo). This modern-day super-band uses their talent (and believe me, they are talented) in new ways. They use their melodies, harmonics and lyrics to wisp you right into their story, albeit corny or cheesy.

Example, from their song “All The Pretty Girls”:

and their friends wanna talk music
I say “I’ve never heard the tune!”
But I have, I just hate the band
’cause they remind me of you.

It’s quite the predictable line, however in a decade where music is defined by so-called “originality” and consumerism, this predictability becomes the originality, because no other band is filling that predictability role.

So what makes this album such a good album? The melodies are truly magical, blending with the harmonic overtones so well that you really feel like you are part of the song. The ebb and flow of the album really takes you on a roller coaster ride and is so enjoyable that you can listen to the album over and over and take a different ride every time.

My advice? Listen to and purchase Aim and Ignite asap. It’s a definite contender for my Album of The Year award, and I guarantee you will have a lot of fun.

Eye Alaska — Genesis Underground

This summer has brought about a new form of music that I have noticed in the indie scene. On happenstance, I attended a concert this summer whose lineup consisted of The Cab headlining and several opening acts. The bands that opened were The Secret Handshake, Eye Alaska, and apparently 2 more bands that weren’t worth remembering. The Secret Handshake stole the show by far, and I found myself craving more. A one-man band that gained fame when he covered “I Wish” by Skee-Lo on the album Punk Goes Crunk, an album where Punk bands cover famous (or maybe not-so-famous) rap and hip hop songs. However, I digress. TSH took the show. They got the crowd involved (very well) and had amazing stage presence. If he were unsigned, any A&R rep would have been jumping at the chance to work with him.

Eye Alaska performed very well, however I didn’t think twice about them. Sure, they got the crowd going some. Yeah, they had quite a different sound than any band I had heard before. But playing before The Secret Handshake was like asking a college-aged coffee-shop comedian to open the stage for Lewis Black or Jim Gaffigan. Nearly impossible. Right?

Wrong. I was perusing my local record store (which, if I may throw in my two cents here, you should all do. Support the music industry! Don’t illegally download music that so many musicians and producers work so hard to give you), when I came across Genesis Underground by Eye Alaska. Their debut LP that was released at the show that I attended (at the Grog Shop in Cleveland, Ohio) on July 7th, 2009. I must admit, there is little I love more than taking a chance on a band that I’ve barely listened to, especially when it pays off big (no sarcasm intended in that sentence; I really do love it). So how did the purchase of Eye Alaska’s Genesis Underground work out for me?

It paid off big. If you want to hear the future of music, I would say to listen to Genesis Underground. Their melodies hit the ear just right, and their music is a pleasant mixture of ambient rock, disco (don’t cringe too much. the music is coming back, the style is not. Thankfully), with a tad bit of hip-hop thrown in there. In fact, they’re already getting airplay in many Hot Topic stores across the nation. I know, who cares? But for a band’s debut album (a relatively unknown band, too), I would say that’s quite the accomplishment. All in all, it may not hit like a hard-rock album, but it will hit you in different ways. I was struck instantly by the lyrical content. They aren’t like the typical “emo” songs or the stereotypical “love” songs that have been circulating the music industry for as long as music has been around. For example, here’s the chorus of their song “American Landslide” (my personal favorite on the album):

Then the button and zip your lips
‘Cause they sayin’ things you don’t wanna hear
And if you heard ‘em well, you would be squirming

I got Genesis Underground for $15 from FYE, but you can purchase it on iTunes or Amazon MP3 Store for $9.99. Well worth the money, and I would recommend to anyone who wants to stay ahead of the Music Industry’s scene curve to go purchase this album. It gets my vote for album of the year thus far, hands down (However, Thrice’s Beggars is making its case for that vote. And now that Brand New’s Daisy is out, I know I have 3 great albums to choose from).

No hay palabras para describir este magnifico album que con solo musica llega a expresar los sentimientos del titulo de cada cancion, he escuchado un poco y me he quedado un tanto…pensativo…la verdad se merece un 10, es para descargarlo ^^. Es una banda que tiene como 1000000000000000000 albums y no paran de sacar. Hacen musica para doramas (series japonesas) para programas de tv…etc muy bueno la verdad.

Festejando o seu 10º aniversário de carreira musical, a popular boyband japonesa  ARASHI, lançará  no mercado seu mais novo álbum, intitulado “All the BEST! 1999~2009″ e estará disponível as vendas hoje,  dia 19 de agosto. O ARASHI é atualmente o grupo top da Johnny’s Entertainment, e os dois singles mais vendidos do ano por enquanto são deles, no caso de “Believe / Kumori Nochi, Kaisei” e “Ashita no Kioku / Crazy Moon ~Kimi wa Muteki~”. Isso faz do ARASHI os maiores artistas em vendas e popularidade da atualidade.

“All the BEST! 1999~2009″ seria um BEST álbum, uma coletânea de todos os singles de maiores sucessos do grupo, aqueles singles que ajudaram eles a chegar no topo dos charts do oricon xD. Esse é definitivemente um “must have” para todos os fãs do ARASHI, e também uma excelente oportunidade para aqueles que ainda não ouviram as músicas do grupo e pretendem conhecê-los.

Intitulado “BEST STORY”, o álbum incluirá as a-sides desde o primeiro single  “Harmonia” (esse que foi usado como segundo tema de encerramentodo anime Naruto) até o single “Love Call”, totalizando 17 faixas.

O album também contará com duas versões limitadas. A versão limitada A virá com dvd contendo 15 videoclipes da dupla começando por “Blue Sky Blue” e terminando com “Winner”. Enquanto que a versão limitada  B incluirá um dvd com a última performance ao vivo do RYTHEM no C.C.Lemon Hall.

Bom, coloquei algumas músicas de singles que estão nesse BEST album “BEST HISTORY”. As músicas do RYTHEM são geralmente calmas e tranquilas, e “Harmonia” não foi diferente, achei a música legal, já o PV achei ele bem simples, dou nota 3/5.

“Nijuuttsubu no Kokoro” é uma balada romântica boa, não vi nada de mais no clipe, portanto nota 3/5.

“Love Call” é bem legal, e como vocês podem ver, conta com a participação da dupla “Kimaguren”, também não vi nada de extraordinário no clipe, portanto nota 3/5.

Gostei de “Mangekyou Kirakira”, achei uma música muito bonita de se escutar, mas o clipe é apenas razoável, dou nota 3/5.

Adorei “Hotarubi”, ela é uma música muito bonita mesmo, gosto desse tipo de musiquinha hehee, quanto ao clipe, achei ele bem normal e não vi nada de surpreendente, como de costume vou dar nota 3/5.

‘Scary newcomer’ 2NE1’s ‘I Don’t Care’ has won the award of the ‘Song of the Month’ on Cyworld Digital Music Awards (DMA) with one of best album sales, renewing the record set by group Big Bang.

Big Bang had won the ‘Song of The Month’ with their previous hit ‘Haru Haru’ and now 2NE1 is back to renew the record set by their seonbae.

Also 2NE1 has received the honours of the highest winning records this year – winning awards with ‘Lollipop’ for the 34th DMA, and also 2 awards with ‘Fire’ on the 35th DMA, and this month they won again with ‘I Don’t Care’.

Not only so, 2NE1 is taking music charts and music shows countdown by storm. ‘I Don’t Care’ has so far won #1 for 3 weeks through on KBS Music Bank, #1 on SBS Inkigayo for 2 weeks through, and also a #1 on Mnet M!Countdown. Also they have sold over 70K copies of their 1st minialbum up till now.

Even though we have many singers and seonbae coming back to release their album recently, 2NE1 continues to sell about 1K album copies per day.

Meanwhile, 2NE1 did the telerecording for SBS ‘Kim JungEun’s Chocoloate’ on 5th August and will be attending the DMA ceremony coming 20th August.

Before I talk about what it was like for me to listen to this album, I feel a little background information is needed. (I have previously tried not to bring up this subject in public, since I tend to get such extreme responses from otherwise friendly people. I am fully aware that my stance is not “popular,” but I’ve never been one to seek popularity for popularity’s sake.)

I hate reggae. There I said it. And before I get yelled at again for this, I must explain. I used to think it was a character flaw, too! Just like you, I thought that if I just listened to enough reggae, or the right reggae, I would learn to like it. But we were both worng. This is just who I am, and I have learned to accept that I was born this way.

My parents love reggae, so I know it’s not environment. I grew up in southwest Florida, and island sounds abounded. My parents even went to a reggae concert when my mother was pregnant with me. She was about seven months along, and she tells me that I started kicking so hard that they had to leave the concert. I didn’t stop until I couldn’t hear the music anymore.

My point is, it’s deep. This is not a passing, “it’s not my cup of tea” kind of deal. I was by no means looking forward to listening to this album. Since, however, Exodus consistently ranks in the various “best albums” lists offered by various “authorities,” I figured this entire project would be disingenuous if I did not include it. After all, it is an album I hadn’t previously heard, and it is an album I never would have listened to otherwise.

That said, this was the longest fifty minutes and eight seconds of my life, and I had a long labor with my son. While I was not driven to fantasizing about self-mutilation, I was overcome with the urge to turn on the television. I can say that I learned something while listening to this album. I still don’t like reggae. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Would I listen to this album again?

Not willingly. There would have to be a very large, scary-looking man standing by the door if I were to stay in the room.

Would I spend money on this album?

No, I would not. If I accidentally bought an album with reggae on it, I would probably ask for a refund.

Did I add any songs to my collection?

For the first time, no.
