<p>This massive and complex stone castle was constructed during the late 12th and early 13th centuries. In 1172 Hugh de Lacy is recorded as building a castle at Trim, however what we see today clearly replaced an early motte-and-bailey structure believed to be attributed to Hugh de Lacy, which was destroyed a year after its completion by Rory O’Connor, King of Connaught. The date for the castle keep is a little more difficult to pinpoint however it is agreed it was started by Hugh de Lacy and was constructed in three separate phases, with additions perhaps over a 50 year period. Today the views from the castle keep around the town are fantastic, however we should never forget that as you looked at this structure in 13th century it stood three stories high had 20 separate sides, the rendered lime-washed facades with there red sandstone dressings, its hoardings and battlements portrayed awesome power.</p>
