The previous version of Opera Mini worked well on Symbian S60 3rd Edition handsets but wasn’t concei

The previous version of Opera Mini worked well on Symbian S60 3rd Edition handsets but wasn’t conceived in anticipation of the touch-screen version of the S60, S60 5th Edition, which can be found on the Nokia N97 and the 5800, to name two. As a result touch functionality didn’t work and the user had to fall back to the hardware keys of the N97 and the virtual keypad of the 5800.

Opera has now released Opera Mini Beta 5 which is a godsend for those with a touch-screen mobiles and brings with it some great new features that should have been part of the inbuilt browser of the Nokia N97, in particular. So, what does Opera Mini Beta 5 offer besides touch friendly browsing.

Tabbed Browsing
An awesome feature especially on a mobile device which has a small screen. The native S60 browser doesn’t handle multiple windows well and to force a new window you have to create a custom page/bookmark hack as the feature is not available natively. The way this has been implemented on S60 5th adds to the usability as the thumbnails of the page are shown in the tab, which will work well for those who prefer to see the colours/images of a page rather than read the name of the tab to identify it.

Select Text/Copy
One thing that Nokia have missed the boat on is the copying of content from the web browser with their S60 devices. Opera opens up this feature and is activated by pressing down on the screen until a balloon with “Select Text” appears. Once text is highlighted, by dragging a finger or stylus across the screen, another balloon pops up offering options to “Copy,” “Search,” or “Search with,” which allows you to select a search engine. Nice time saving features allowing information to be freed from the browser.

Save Page
You can save web pages to the device so they can be viewed offline. Another cool feature allowing pages to be saved, just like on a PC browser but for a mobile device, options can be set as to where you would like pages saved on the phone, to prevent those ‘low disk space’ errors!

On-Screen QWERTY Keyboard
A handy feature for the N97 which doesn’t have this natively. Sure, there is a physical keyboard but sometimes you aren’t typing enough to warrant opening the keyboard, but just enough that the on-screen number pad becomes an inconvenience.

Speed Dial
Opera Mini b5 can be set to open up on the Speed Dial page, a grid of 9 thumbnails representing your favourite sites, providing you with quick access to them from start up. This has replaced my Start.io homepage and instead the Start.io page can have a speed dial box.

Password Manager
If you hate signing-in to sites over and over again, the password manager will be a boon, although if you frequently misplace your phones, this feature may be better left unused.

I have been Opera Mini Beta 5 briefly, but some sites aren’t formatted correctly, resulting in text overlaps, yet these pages appear normally in the default S60 browser. There’s no bookmark sync, which might have been the feature to get me to install Opera on my PC! Due to the addition of kinetic scrolling for touch-screen devices, the screen no longer snaps to the edges of paragraphs, so when scrolling up and down, unless you keep your finger, thumb or stylus on a perfectly vertical trail, you will find the page moving horizontally also. On a positive note, browsing on Opera Mini remains snappy, great access to pages using speed dial and tabs adds to the experience. With the addition of the qwerty keyboard, convenience and speed seems to have been the primary focus of this release. This is great progress on a great app and a lot of thought seems to have gone into improving the mobile browsing experience, which can be a chore at times!

Give the app a try if you haven’t used it before: opera.com/mini/next.

Ubertwitter is the favorite among Blackberry users but my question is, is SocialScope going to become number one and be the Favorite twitter app among Blackberry users?!?!?! I have used both and from my experiences I prefer SocialScope . And so do alot of other users. I think it is more reliable and IMO has less bugs. And mind you it hasn’t even been released yet. The only feature it is missing is the ability to see the Trending Topics, which, is not a deal breaker for me.

Ubertwitter is gonna go down without a fight, though. As they have just released an update that now includes TweetPhoto. Beta 5 also includes many updated features, too.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens when SocialScope is officially released to the public. I’m waiting…….

I wanted to follow up on my previous blog, in regards to the iPhone 3.0 OS (which you can read at: http://dongee.typepad.com/my_weblog/a-review-of-iphone-30-os/).

A few weeks ago, iPhone 3.0 (beta 5) was released and there have been a few noticeable improvements, one of which is the Bluetooth Audio (A2DP) feature.

For those of you like me, who love being freed from wires and enjoy listening to their music via Bluetooth Audio (A2DP), iPhone 3.0 (beta 5) has a few nice tweaks. This feature is really nice for listening to Bluetooth Audio (A2DP) in our SUV (which is powered my Microsoft Sync). Once it syncs and plays a music selection (via streaming audio) and we leave the car, the music on the iPhone will automatically stop, and when we re-enter our car, it will pick up where the music left off.

One downside still exists with the Bluetooth Stereo feature, the fast forward/rewind controls on the bluetooth devices still don’t work (Pause/Play, volume controls works fine) hopefully this will be fixed in the next release.

The Airplane Mode feature seems to work smoother now.

In the first release of iPhone 3.0 beta, when Airplane Mode was turned on while listening to music via Bluetooth, the Bluetooth connection severed, and when the Bluetooth was switched back on (on the iPhone) while still in Airplane Mode, the Bluetooth couldn’t re-sync to any of the paired devices. Now it does with no problems. Yeah.

Overall the performance seems better with iPhone 3.0 (beta 5). While emailing, texting and web browsing, switching to landscape mode transitions quicker and smoother.

There are currently 800+ add-ons compatible with Firefox 3 (3.0+, not including betas) on addons.moz

There are currently 800+ add-ons compatible with Firefox 3 (3.0+, not including betas) on addons.mozilla.org (AMO). This accounts for roughly 60% of the total usage of add-ons.

Going to mix things up a bit this week. First, I’m going to list the top 5 add-ons that became available in the last week. After that, I’ll list the top 5 add-ons we are still waiting on. Finally, I’ll pick a “communities wish”, which is the add-on the folks who comment on my blog seem to care about the most.

Top 5 add-ons now available for Firefox 3 on AMO

Note, this are the top add-ons that are hosted on AMO, does not include things like Google Gears.

ForecastFox – Weather, now available directly from Firefox 3.

FoxMarks – Start syncing your bookmarks now!

Firefox Companion for eBay – for all the power eBayers.

Gmail Manager – Manage multiple gmail accounts, receive notifications, generally be happy.

translator – translate any webpage with a single click!

Top 5 add-ons not available for Firefox 3 on AMO

Mouse Gestures (bug) – This was updated, but was reverted because of crasher bugs on Windows. The developer has many things on his plate, so we might not see an update for awhile.

Greasemonkey (bug) – Some progress has been made, as it is updated to beta 5. We have had limited contact with the developer, so I cannot give you an ETA at this time. If you know something I don’t, I’m all ears. Update: the development community is asking too, check out this thread.

Tab Mix Plus (bug) – This add-on has made the list pretty much every week. The problem is that we have not been able to get an update from anyone. The development forums seem to be really active, and there are development builds available, but no word on an ETA for landing on AMO.

FoxyTunes (bug) – Betas available, test it out (xpi)! They will need to ship right when Fx3 ships, because their new version is not compatible with Firefox 2.

ColorfulTabs (bug) – Development builds available (xpi). Looks like it will land on AMO once the developer gets back from vacation!

In summary, ColorfulTabs, FoxyTunes, are pretty much ready. Work has been done on Greasemonkey and Tab Mix Plus, but keep your fingers cross. Finally, best wishes goes out to the developer of MouseGestures as he recovers from hardship.

Now for the Community Wish!

From the comments I’ve been receiving, I would say that the most desired add-on to be updated is… drum roll…. Google Toolbar! Good news, the Google Toolbar team has been working really hard to get it updated. It is going to cut very close to the Firefox 3 release — so keep your fingers crossed!

*Stirnrunzel* Egal.

AdBlock ausgefallen, was man sehr schnell merkt.
