Early in the 2008 election cycle there was widespread concern about voter fraud and intimidation. It is believed by many, including myself, that Obama and his thugs stole the Democratic primaries and caucuses. There has been much discussion about the 2010 elections and continued voter fraud and suspect voting machines. Earlier today the Citizen Wells blog reported on more suspicion about the NY District 23 congressional race, narrowly lost by Doug Hoffman.

“We in the 23rd were the subject of a ‘beta test, pilot program’, in the midst of a very important election. There were many problems as a result of this ‘test’. The integrity, credibility and voter confidence in this election is severely challenged as a result. A manual hand count needs to be accomplished in order to assure the voters that the Sequoia/Dominion ImageCast machines worked and worked accurately. Not doing so will forever taint the results of this ‘beta test’ election as well as future elections.

It is not a matter of who won or who lost… it is a matter of our constitutional right to a fair, open and honest election process without vendors protecting their interests (Sequoia), or a State covering their collective <actions>… at the expense of the voting process itself.”

Haven’t taken a look at them, truthfully… I am worried that the companies tend not to open source their software, though, as scrutiny should drive out bugs in software and demonstrate transparency and honesty in the system.

The voting machines were Sequoia software also, and Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela company designed that software.”

The AVC Advantage voting machine is made by Sequoia Voting Systems and has been used in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, and other states. Pursuant to a Court Order in New Jersey Superior Court, we examined this voting machine as well as its computer program code. On October 17, 2008 the Court permitted us to release to the public a redacted version of our report.

The version we release here, linked in boldface above, is the same as the Court’s redacted version, but with a few introductory paragraphs about the court case, Gusciora v. Corzine.

Frequently Asked Questions (“Why are you releasing this just 3 weeks before the election?” etc.)

What you need to know:

The AVC Advantage contains a computer. If someone installs a different computer program for that computer to run, it can deliberately add up the votes wrong. It’s easy to make a computer program that steals votes from one party’s candidates, and gives them to another, while taking care to make the total number of votes come out right. It’s easy to make this program take care to cheat only on election day when hundreds of ballots are cast, and not cheat when the machine is being tested for accuracy. This kind of fraudulent computer program can modify every electronic “audit trail” in the computer. Without voter-verified paper ballots, it’s extremely hard to know whether a voting machine (such as the AVC Advantage) is running the right program.

It takes about 7 minutes, using simple tools, to replace the computer program in the AVC Advantage with a fraudulent program that cheats. We demonstrate this on the video.

Even when it’s not hacked to deliberately steal votes, the AVC Advantage has a few user-interface flaws. Therefore, sometimes the AVC Advantage does not properly record the intent of the voter. All known voting technologies have imperfect user interfaces, although some are worse than others. The public should beware of the argument that some people make, that “we should not replace the AVC Advantage with voting method X, because X is imperfect.” The AVC Advantage’s susceptibility to installation of a fraudulent vote-counting program is far more than an imperfection: it is a fatal flaw.

What should be done? Most technology experts who study the security of voting methods recommend precinct-count optical-scan voting, with by-hand audits of the optical-scan ballots from randomly selected precincts. We agree with this consensus. In fact, most states are moving in the right direction: 32 states now vote with voter-verified paper ballots (mostly optical-scan, some with DRE+VVPAT). Only a minority of states are still using paperless DRE voting machines such as the AVC Advantage. We recommend that those states adopt precinct-count optical scan.

Executive Summary of the Report

I. The AVC Advantage 9.00 is easily “hacked,” by the installation of fraudulent firmware. This is done by prying just one ROM chip from its socket and pushing a new one in, or by replacement of the Z80 processor chip. We have demonstrated that this “hack” takes just 7 minutes to perform.

The fraudulent firmware can steal votes during an election, just as its criminal designer programs it to do. The fraud cannot practically be detected. There is no paper audit trail on this machine; all electronic records of the votes are under control of the firmware, which can manipulate them all simultaneously.

II. Without even touching a single AVC Advantage, an attacker can install fraudulent firmware into many AVC Advantage machines by viral propagation through audio-ballot cartridges. The virus can steal the votes of blind voters, can cause AVC Advantages in targeted precincts to fail to operate; or can cause WinEDS software to tally votes inaccurately. (WinEDS is the program, sold by Sequoia, that each County’s Board of Elections uses to add up votes from all the different precincts.)

III. Design flaws in the user interface of the AVC Advantage disenfranchise voters, or violate voter privacy, by causing votes not to be counted, and by allowing pollworkers to commit fraud.

IV. AVC Advantage Results Cartridges can be easily manipulated to change votes, after the polls are closed but before results from different precincts are cumulated together.

V. Sequoia’s sloppy software practices can lead to error and insecurity. Wyle’s ITA reports are not rigorous, and are inadequate to detect security vulnerabilities. Programming errors that slip through these processes can miscount votes and permit fraud.

VI. Anomalies noticed by County Clerks in the New Jersey 2008 Presidential Primary were caused by two different programming errors on the part of Sequoia, and had the effect of disenfranchising voters.

VII. The AVC Advantage has been produced in many versions. The fact that one version may have been examined for certification does not give grounds for confidence in the security and accuracy of a different version. New Jersey should not use any version of the AVC Advantage that it has not actually examined with the assistance of skilled computer-security experts.

VIII. The AVC Advantage is too insecure to use in New Jersey. New Jersey should immediately implement the 2005 law passed by the Legislature, requiring an individual voter-verified record of each vote cast, by adopting precinct-count optical-scan voting equipment.”

I had read recently that Twitter was going to do a Beta test and add a retweet function as part of their package.  I am happy to report that I am part of the beta and the functionality seems to be pretty sweet.

It is so easy to use that little link to pass along good tidbits that my network has provided.

Ok – I Just Got Twitter’s New Retweet Feature on Twitter.com. We’ve been using 3rd part apps and clients for easy retweeting until now and I’ve been very curious how they would make it their own. Here’s a few screen shots – the coolest of which has to be of the “Undo Retweet” Feature.

Eu tinha muita curiosidade de ver como estavam algumas das opções avançadas do dofus nesse jogo. Infelizmente deu um bug enquanto eu jogava, mas consegui tirar algumas screenshots, confiram:

Assim que logei, havia mais personagens na conta, dentre eles o Vereador. Então cliquei nele e veio a tela de seleção de cores, a mesma quando você cria um novo personagem. Deixei as cores já usadas com ele, e fui pra Tainela, dungeon Gobball. No meio de lá percebi que as magias haviam sido ressetadas também. Daí redistribui os pontos. Encontre também um Osamodas lutando. Depois do almoço eu volto e colocarei mais imagens. A luta com  o rei Gobball tá garantida aguardem e verão, ciao!

This afternoon I’ve been playing with and testing Flavors.me, which was pointed out to me by designer Simon Ianson.

The service is currently in private beta but once launched aims to help you create “an elegant website using personal content from around the internet”, ie. help you bring a selection of your social media presences under one roof and for it to look nice. The latter I think is the point as much as the former. The company are citing possible uses as:

• personal home pages
• life streaming
• splash and microsites
• celebrity fan pages
• commercial promotion
• brand marketing

From what I understand the service is being built by Jack Zerby, designer director at Vimeo and his partner in crime Jonathan Marcus, but I should emphasise that the project is not affiliated with Vimeo.

Pages on the site aren’t yet public and unfortunately the demo video (also see it here) isn’t shareable, not sure if that’s purposeful, but I can share this video made by someone else who has tested things out:

And here’s a pic of my test, which took me about 30 minutes to put together – but only because I decided to play with the font colours and background design, and was enjoying things a bit too much. In reality you could get something functional up in about 2 minutes and something more to your tastes up in about 5-10 minutes.

During my experimentation I came across a few minor bugs and the team were impressively quick to respond. From Simon’s experience as well, they seem very keen to get the service right, which is fantastic.

What I like is that it’s simple, brings things together, and does what-it-says-on-the-tin as the results generally look good (although some of the pre-selected colour schemes don’t work for all content). I can see how it could be popular as a personal webpage or the starting point for a celebrity fan site, gathering all the pieces of social media presence together.

However, at the moment there are only six social media services that can be added to your Flavor.me site – Twitter, Flickr, Vimeo, Tumblr, Facebook and Last.fm. Whilst these do cover a wide variety of possible intents and users, it will be interesting to see how the team balance the design of Flavor.me with the desire of users to have more services included.

Simon also pointed out, and I agree, that being able to add your own domain to the service would add great value to the proposition (although, noted, this does add technical complexity). So instead of the URL http://flavor.me/user/kcorrick it could resolve to kathryncorrick.co.uk (or whatever).

I’m not also not sure that as the service currently stands would be something that could withstand the rigours of brand management and marketing: the fonts – whilst funky – are still fairly limited, and only one image can be uploaded, which for a brand would introduce interesting questions regarding logos (it still always comes down to logos, unfortunately).

But I’m sure there is much to come, given that the service I tried is in beta and de-bug mode put together with the obvious keenness by the team to get things right.

UPDATE 19/10/2009: Jack from Flavors.me has been in touch and responded to some of my queries above. Watch this space.

Yesterday, for the first time during this pregnancy, I felt good. I felt really good. That beta number was so different from my last pregnancy’s beta number that I was sure it meant something different for this time around. I know I can still lose this pregnancy, but as long as it’s not to an ectopic, I think I’ll be okay.

And I’ll know for sure whether or not it’s ectopic sooner that I thought. Dr. Google has informed me that the gestational sac should be visible with a beta hCG number of 6,500. My numbers should be that high soon and by some miracle, my OB-BYN heeded my pleas and made me an appointment (with her!) for a quick ultrasound tomorrow. So tomorrow, around 2:50pm I should know for sure if I’m having another ectopic. That is one week and one day quicker that I thought I’d know. Now I’m even more excited that I pushed for the beta. This experience is definitely teaching me nothing about being patient and just waiting things out.

So if today’s beta number is double Monday’s number, we should be able to see the gestational sac tomorrow. In case things don’t look good, I have therapy a few hours later and I can easily cancel my trip to LA this weekend to recover physically and emotionally. I feel pretty good about things at this point.

I’m pretty sure I’ll still have my prenatal visit at 6 weeks, and Dr. Google says that they should be able to see a heartbeat by then. I’m going to confirm with my OBGYN about that because I really don’t want to go in unless they are sure they will be able to see a heartbeat. My guess is with numbers this high, they will at 6 weeks, but if there is any doubt, I may push it back.

I guess after I find out that it’s not ectopic I have to let myself calm down and enjoy the ride. No more daily emails to my OB and no information requests from Dr. Google. I need to just get a book I trust and stick with that, because internet searches can reveal scary stuff, and I don’t want to surround myself with any unnecessary anxiety.

Thank you all for your kind words of support and encouragement this past week. I can’t tell you what they mean to me. I promise you’ll all be the first to know when I receive any information.

BUENAS NOTICIAS – Yesterday we had a big storm in Northern California. I casually mentioned in the staff room that I needed new tires and low and behold, today there are two tire coupons in my box. I love my staff. Oh and did I mention I have an ultrasound scheduled for tomorrow! Whoo hoo!

I got my first beta test results today. The NP who ordered them for me was adamant: she wasn’t going to call me with either until I’d had both, because one number “means nothing.” Well I see your point, but my intention is to compare it with my last pregnancy, thank you very much. And I don’t care if you can argue all day about it not meaning anything when compared to my last pregnancy, because I need to know SOMETHING! So I called some unsuspecting Kaiser representative and she told me what it was. And it was…

This number makes me happy. This number gives me hope. I was at 19DPO yesterday when I got my blood drawn. Last time I got my blood drawn at 18DPO and it was 100. At 22DPO it was 400. So it was doubling at the time, but those numbers are MUCH lower than a 19DPO of 3170. I repeated it three times on the phone, the last time clarifying three thousands, one hundred seventy? When I was sure I wasn’t messing up the order of the numbers, and she confirmed the result, I was elated. Oh unsuspecting Kaiser representative… you made my day.

Anyway, I know it doesn’t really mean anything. I know you can have very high betas and still have an ectopic. But I also know that last time I had much lower numbers than this time and it gives me hope that this time will be different. That at least this time it won’t be in my tube. Oh, please, please let it not be in my tube! I really feel good about that number. For the first time since I got my BFP last week, I feel truly positive. I’m so glad I pushed for the beta test. So glad.

Anyway, that is all I really have to report today. I got my first beta and it makes me hopeful. That is fine for one day. I think I’ll post some cute pictures of Squeaks, since this post is a little on the light side. She’s much more fun to look at than I am to read anyway.

BUENAS NOTICIAS – Blaine Ray, the man who created TPRS (the method I use to teach Spanish) came to teach two of my classes today. My kids were great and he was very impressed with our social contract, good news and hand shaking at the door. It made me feel really nice to have a teacher who doesn’t know me tell me I’m doing an amazing job. Thanks Blaine Ray!

Trying out the look and feel. Font, colors, interface etc.

Guess what I did today. Or better said, guess what I didn’t do today. I didn’t pee on a stick. When AF never showed yesterday I finally felt safe not assuring myself that I am still pregnant. The reality is, I will know when things are going wrong, and a line on a strip isn’t going to be what tells me.

My attitude towards not getting betas oscillates. Sometimes I think, it won’t tell me anything so there is no point in requesting one, going over there and waiting for the result. Sometimes the desperately scared part of me pleads, but if the number is higher than last time, won’t that mean something? Won’t that give you peace of mind? When that person inside pleads with me, as she is doing right now, it’s hard to stay strong in my resolve.

I’m trying to find strategies to stay positive without actually thinking about this pregnancy in a way that will hurt more later on. I want to feel calm and assured, without looking ahead and imagining milestones along the way. If I think about where I’ll be during the holidays, it will make them that much harder to endure if I lose the pregnancy. If I imagine how big I’ll be at the end of the school year, and how inconsequential school will feel when I’m on the verge of delivering, it will make the spring months a constant reminder of what I’ve lost. I don’t know how to think of this pregnancy positively without setting myself up for further disappointment.

Maybe I can focus on myself, just myself, without the pregnancy component. Maybe I can visualize myself as calm and serene, sitting on the shore of a vast lake, early in the morning when the mist is still clinging to the surface. When I meditate, I can make my breath the waves of the ocean forever crashing against the shore before pulling themselves back into oblivion. I need to focus on stillness and serenity because right now I’m dwelling in their opposites and it’s making the minute tick more slowly than I can bare.

In Buddhism they teach that there is no birth and death. We exist before our lives as we know them and afterwards. We are not our bodies or our collective experiences, we are a part of everything everywhere, that has ever been and will be. One way to understand this concept that seems so impossible to grasp is with a wave. You can describe a wave as being tall or short, powerful or tame, destructive or fun. You can measure a wave’s speed and distance. You can say that a wave begins somewhere and ends somewhere. But really, a wave is just water. The wave is never born, nor does it die, it is always water no matter what form it takes. When conditions are right the wave manifests. It is this way with everything. When conditions are sufficient things manifest. When conditions are not sufficient they don’t manifest.

It is the same with life. When conditions are sufficient, life manifests. When they are not, life does not manifest or ceases to manifest. That is all there is to it. During my last pregnancy, conditions were not sufficient. The embryo got stuck in the wrong place and there wasn’t nutrients or space for it to thrive. So life stopped manifesting, it went away, hopefully to come back again. Just as flowers bloom when weather and rain permit, so I hope that a life will grow inside of me when conditions are sufficient. I hope I can hold on to this idea and be at peace with it, whether conditions are sufficient this time or not.

Estados – Queremos aumentar a importância deles nas lutas e deixar mais visíveis. Ficará mais fácil saber quem está sob qual efeito se você olhar sobre a cabeça de um personagem e ver estrelinhas ao redor dele.

Esferas de Combate – Quando você entra em uma luta, o campo ao redor da área que você pode se mover são essas chamadas esferas.  Estamos planejando trabalhar novamente nelas.

Monstros – Retrabalharemos em todas as famílias de monstros um por um para deixar eles mais “inteligentes”. Também, vamos reduzir o número de espécies de monstros pois viram que o número não tava servindo em muita coisa.

Agora além do combate, está sendo preparadas diversas atualizações no jogo em que Tot (um dos desenvolvedores) já comentou;

Incarnam: Você descobriu os primeisos passos no Wakfu e aprendeu mais sobre a história. Já foram recebidos várias informações para melhorar essa etapa do jogo através do fórum.

Clan Members: Haverá muito trabalho a fazer com eles. Animações, balanceamento, Inteligência Artificial, novas opções para acrescentar… Nem tudo precisa ser retrabalhado, mas sabemos que vai demorar. E só vamos terminar quando tudo estiver arrumado

As ilhas são muito parecidas: São cinco arquipélagos no mundo de Wakfu: Amakna, Astrub, Bonta, Brakmar e Sufokia. Cada arquipélago será bem diferente dos outros. Será 4 ilhas com governantes e 1 ilha central. A idéia das 4 ilhas pequenas serem parecidas segue nossa ideia para que nenhuma delas sofra desvantagem em relação as outras. De qualquer forma, a ilha central será diferente das outras 4.

Monstros que ocupam mais de uma célula: TOt havia comentado a possibilidade em que Kam (outra pessoa por trás do desenvolvimento do jogo) possa trabalhar com monstros que ocupem até 9 células. Bem, isso não é mais uma possibilidade, é um fato!! Só há uma coisa para se dizer (segundo o post no blog): eles serão um banquete para os olhos!

Ecossistema: Novamente, há muito trabalho para Ankama fazer em relação a isso. Cada novo monstro em que é colocado não é apenas um saco de pancadas, mas um ser vivo, interagindo com o meio ao seu redor.

Emotes: Ilustrações dos seu personagem baseado com os emoticons que você usou no chat, essa é uma ideia maluca de Xa. Dessa forma, antes de ler as palavras de seu amigo, você já sabe qual é a expressão dele.

Monstarias: Será que elas vão demorar pra chegar assim como foi no Dofus? Uma ótima pergunta vinda de Dreking. O sistema consiste em criação de espécies de qualquer forma (o que permitirá que espécies correndo risco de extinção sejam preservadas). No momento, estamos colocando várias idéias na mesa para depois analizarmos melhor. E acredite em que quando dizemos que não estamos com poucas ideias e que o esforço realmente valerá a pena!

Neve no Wakfu? Não para este Kwismas mas Tot claramente demonstrou interesse em ver as terras de Amakna cobertas de pó branco. Não queremos que nossos artistas comecem a trabalhar nisso imediatamente, mas você pode esperar em fazer um boneco de neve no futuro.

Por que não há casas no jogo, apenas ruinas? Eventualmente, jogadores poderão construir suas próprias moradias, parte da ilha de Amakna está reservada para este propósito.

Bancos? Não vemos necessidade em introduzir eles no jogo. Baús estarão disponíveis para você deixar em sua sacola. Pra quê dar dinheiro para alguém guardar alguma coisa se você mesmo pode fazer isso?

Tudo isso será acompanhado com a possibilidade de conseguir seu personagem no nível 100 embora pareca que os Srams terão que esperar um pouco mais por isso do que imaginado. Semana que vem isto será explicado melhor.

Finalmente! Para uma questão que está enchendo a caixa de mensagem dos moderadores, quais são as próximas classes que serão encaminhadas? Atualmente temos Iop, Ecaflip, Cra e Enipirisa. As previsões serão que as próximas sejam nessa ordem: Sacrier, Sram/Xelor, Feca, Pandawa, Sadida, Enutrof e finalmente Osamodas.

So I went in for the Beta test today (even though it is two days early) and I just got the results back.  I heard those wonderful words…..Congratulations you’re (actually Zorah and Khelifa) pregnant!  Your hCG number is 79.  I was told that anything over 5 was good.  Holy cow….if 5 is good does that mean that 79 is going to give Zorah and Khelifa a litter?  Jayde actually asked me since 5 meant you were pregnant, does that mean you are going to have a litter?  She comes up with the strangest things!

I just got done having dinner with Megan at Outback.  Megan was my wonderful first coordinator at IARC (and my French translator).  We laughed, laughed some more, hugged a ton and talked about how excited Zorah and Khelifa are going to be when they find out.

I thought that sending them an email or calling them is so impersonal.  I think I am going to have an engraved Tiffany’s rattle sent to them as a way to inform them of this wonderful surprise.  Any other suggestions on how to tell someone they are pregnant?

Little Big Planet Water

Media Molecule is now taking sign ups to the Little Big Planet Water Beta Test event.  To do so, you need to be 18 years old, have a PSN id, and you can’t share what you see in the Beta test.

News that Media Molecule was bringing water into Little Big Planet have been buzzing around earlier as well. It’s interetsing news to say the least. People have been extremely creative with what LBP already had, imagine what people will be making now that there is the addition of water. I see Little Mermaid, Super Mario and Moby Dick levels all around.

This is a pretty exciting thought. If you have any ideas for levels you will create for Little Big Planet using water, you should leave them hear. It’s an exciting thought, because the Little Big Planet level creating community is a very creative one. I’ve seen amazing levels created since day 1. Some of these levels look like it was something created by a professional level designer. This one addition is going to add a lot of gameplay elements to something that was already rich with it. I’m wondering if there will be waves included as well as fully functional water physics. Being able to manipulate the water would be pretty fun. I also wonder if you will be able to drown your sack boy.

No, not Bettas. Those are fish. I’m talking about beta tests for software. There are, essentially, two kinds of beta tests: Closed and open.

A closed beta test exists in order to invite outsiders to run your software. PCs have a variety of configurations that borders on infinite. Your budget, as a game studio, only allows you to test on a small number of configurations. A closed beta, therefore, exists in order to test your software on more configurations without you having to buy all that hardware. It’s an engineering/programming/development tool.

An open beta test, on the other hand, is more of a marketing tool. Yes, of course the game studio is still fixing bugs – and with more people testing, you find more bugs. You also get to enjoy, as Cryptic Studios discovered, stress-testing your servers. However, studios often lift Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) during the open beta, which allows all the testers to speak openly, and frankly, about your product. You hope they’ll be enthusiastic evangelists, but you don’t control it. You need to have excellent community management and customer service ready for your beta test, and you need to monitor social media for people talking about your game.

I recently started beta testing Champions Online. It’s an open beta, and the NDA has been lifted. I didn’t start blogging about it immediately because I wanted to actually think about my experiences rather than reacting. As I thought about it, I decided to limit my blogging. It’s still an early beta, which means there are a lot of missions that need bug fixing. It means there are tons of low-level characters, so all the areas are crowded – to the point where you can’t complete many open missions because everyone is camping the spawn points (hanging around, waiting for something to spawn). In fact, most of my comments would be more purposeful in the Champions Online forums than in my blog.

Here’s what I will say about the game, though: Due to video problems on my end that Champions Online revealed but did not cause, my mouse cursor was barely visible when I started. I still played for three hours. Now that’s a fun game. When I did stop playing, I found the solution to the mouse cursor issue on the Champions Online forums. See you in Millennium City!
