Pouah…

by Dylan Tucker

Now, this is more like it! Anemic offense, terrible bullpen outings, and unbelievably shameful defense… the Royals are back! As the season wraps up, and Zack Greinke marches toward the 2009 AL Cy Young award, things are looking as bad as ever!

Kyle Farnsworth continued to make Dayton Moore look like a total chump last night as he was brought in to pick up a one-run save in Yankee Stadium. The Bronx faithful had to have been giddy with excitement as their 15th walk-off win of the season was practically guaranteed when the Farns emerged from the visiting bullpen. A Juan Miranda (who???) ricochet later, and the damn Yankees (no relation) were bouncing around in a celebratory pile while the dejected Royals trudged off the field. This is the type of baseball that we should see in September, not the mirage that was plaguing KC fans prior to the Boston series.

In my opinion, A Dayton Moore-lead Royals squad has about as good of a shot at making the playoffs as the Lamar Odom/Khloe Kardashian marriage does lasting into 2010. Dayton’s offseason moves this year were either terrible or plagued by injuries, and the acquisition of Yuni Betancourt was the jewel of the class. I realize that their are limited resources in Kansas City, but the way that DM has chosen to disperse said resources is terrifying.

It’s almost kinda disgusting that Kauffman stadium recorded it’s highest attendance since 1993 behind the smoke and mirrors of a newish ball park. Attendance will plummet next year as the burning ship that is Royals baseball continues to sink into an endless abyss of despair.

Clearly, these are just some random and jumbled thoughts brought about by shear frustration, but I’m close to jumping on the Rany bandwagon.

by Paul Thompson

Yeah, the Kansas City Royals suck. And sure, they were historically bad for a solid three months before their inevitable September run. Yet some of us, in spite of all logic and reason, just can’t give up on the team that so thoroughly disappointed us all season. And our faith has been rewarded, as the Royals are finally providing us with compelling storylines two weeks before their decidedly dismal season comes to a close. With the motto better late than never, here are my 10 reasons to keep watching the Royals.

10. Another Crazy September from Kyle Davies

While the usual Kyle Davies continues to be the most remarkably inconsistent pitcher on the club, the September Davies continues to be something to behold. Davies posted a 4-1 record with a 2.27 ERA during September of 2008, allowing Royals fans great and unwarranted optimism heading into 2009. Needless to say, Davies was demoted to Omaha in late June after compiling a 5.76 ERA to start the season. But Davies is back now and having another crazy good yet unsustainable September. Try these numbers out: Davies is now 3-0 with a 1.06 ERA this month. Through his 17 innings pitched, Davies has allowed 14 walks and struck out only 10 batters. Ladies and gentleman, Kyle Davies!

9. Olivo, Jacobs, and Teahen’s Race to Lead the Team in Strikeouts

Now here is a category that has gotten infinitely more entertaining the farther the Royals slip from contention. Instead of anger, I can now laugh maniacally as Miguel Olivo swings at three consecutive pitches in the dirt with runners in scoring position. And while Bo Jackson’s record of 172 strikeouts appears safe, this battle is sure to come down to the wire. Teahen and Olivo are currently tied for the team lead with 118 K’s, while Jacobs is lurking closely behind at 117. The truly sad part of this entire affair is that Teahen, a regular, has 100 more plate appearances than Jacobs and 150 more than Olivo. With Teahen’s recently balky back, the door is wide open for either Jacobs or Olivo to surpass him. To make this race even more interesting, how about you and two friends make a friendly wager on the player you think will “win” this title. Are you telling me you couldn’t have fun openly and unabashedly rooting for Trey Hillman to start Jacobs against a lefty during the season’s last homestand? Come on.

8. The Battle with the Cleveland Indians for Fourth Place

Yeah, so maybe last year’s fourth place finish didn’t make a difference, but the second time’s a charm right? After almost assuring a last place finish with their poor play, the Royals have come out of oblivion to tighten up the race for fourth place in the Central. Now only three games back, Kansas City has a legitimate chance to catch a reeling Cleveland team and prove once and for all that they are merely the fourth worst team in the division, and not the fifth. While it may not seem like much consolation, you can bet that Dayton Moore and Co. will be fishing for whatever kind of optimism they can find, and another fourth place finish would certainly be better than last.

7. The Royals Home Run Showdown

Now that the disheartening, embarrassing race to 20 home runs has been won by Miguel Olivo, it’s time for the real battle to begin. Who will lead this team in home runs. We have the favorite, Olivo, who despite his 21 homers is pretty much despised by the fan base at this point and is not an everyday player. The chaser, Billy Butler, has only 17 home runs but has been swinging the bat better than anyone in the American League lately, as proven by his AL Player of the Week trophy last week. Then we have the dark horse, Mike Jacobs, whose 17 dingers tie him for second despite irregular duty in the DH spot. Can somebody supplant Mighty Miguel? I’m sure this race has the entire baseball world on the edge of their seats.

6. Alex Gordon’s Progress After Demotion and Subsequent Promotion

I won’t even get into the reasoning for Alex Gordon’s demotion, although it’s hard to argue with the team after the less-than-stellar season he’d put together up to that point. In any case, the Royals delayed Gordon’s free agent clock with the demotion and he will be with us for a while. What he does after coming back tells us a lot about what kind of player Gordon will become. Will he put his nose to the grindstone and work hard, or will he pout and lament his demotion? So far this month, in an incredibly small sample size, Gordon is 5-21 with 1 home run and 2 RBI. But his six walks have given him a .391 OBP, and his OPS is a respectable .862. So all is not lost, yet. But what he does with the rest of this season could decide his fate with the Royals.

5. The Royals Inexplicable Major-League Lead in Triples

This one is a great example of just how kooky and unpredictable the game of baseball can be. The Royals currently lead the majors with 45 triples, two more than the second place Colorado Rockies and twelve more than the next closest American League team, the Twins. What does this mean? Absolutely nothing! And that’s the beautiful part about baseball. Sure, triples are a statistical category which bears no direct link to winning games. I understand that. And I suspect they have more to do with the propensity of KC’s powerless line-up to hit warning track fly balls (instead of home runs) than any actual skill or intent, but we could lead the league in something! Trust me, the off-season is long when you have nothing good to say about your team. “Hey, at least we led the league in triples” has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

4. Robinson Tejeda’s Turn as a Starting Pitcher

Tejeda pitched great again on Tuesday, going five innings and giving up one run, the first run he’s allowed since becoming a starter at the start of September. How good has Tejeda been? Better than anyone could have ever expected. This month, he is 2-0 in three starts with a 0.55 ERA, 6 hits allowed, and 19 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings pitched. Since becoming a starter, Tejeda’s ERA has fallen a full point. In fact, since the beginning of August Tejeda’s ERA has dropped from an unsightly 5.79 to 3.09. During that span, he surrendered only two runs in 31 innings, an incredible accomplishment, especially for a Royal not named Greinke. Tejeda has shown me enough since the beginning of August to pencil him into the rotation as the 5th man next year. He has at least earned the right to compete for a spot, and I have to believe he could be more effective than the Ponson’s, Horacio Ramirez’s, and Bruce Chen’s of the world. I can’t wait to see what he does down the stretch.

3. Billy Butler’s Run at the Royals Doubles Record

While it may not be the best reason to keep watching the Royals, it’s still my favorite. Butler has been dynamite in the second half, tearing the cover off the ball to the tune of a .318/.378/.536 line, as well as a .914 OPS. In just 57 games in the second half, compared to 86 games in the first, Butler has already hit 9 home runs (8 in the first half) and had 42 RBI (38). His 46 doubles lead the team, of course, but they are also only eight short of the team-record 54, held by Hal McRae. We’ve seen him hit three in a game (twice), so who’s to say that he can’t topple McRae’s team record? I think he’s got a fighter’s chance to beat McRae, and a great shot at reaching 50, the proverbial gold mark for doubles.

2. Zack Greinke’s Incredible Attempt to Win the Cy Young Award

Um, yeah, Zack Greinke deserves the Cy Young even if he sat out the rest of the year. Everyone from Kansas City knows that. Greinke has posted an amazing 2.14 ERA this season, complete with three shutouts, 210 1/3 innings pitched, 224 strikeouts and just 44 walks. His 14-8 record will probably hurt him, but it shouldn’t. He has been the most dominant pitcher in the league, hands down. If he wants to win the adulation of the national media, he is going to have to sparkle in his last couple starts. Knowing Greinke, there is little doubt that he will. Zack seems like a guy who rises to the challenges of being the best, and this is his chance to prove it. In a season where the Royals will lose over 90 games, what higher drama is there than a legitimate Cy Young chase? Greinke has already had his seminal moment, (15 K’s on August 25) and if he can pull out a couple more wins his peripherals should easily outshine the competition.

1. The Royals are Actually Winning Games

I know this may seem corny, but in a season where the Royals lost 59 of 86 games from May 26 to September 1, it’s easy to forget what we loved about baseball in the first place: watching our teams win games. And that is exactly what the Royals are doing in September (again). Kansas City has won 9 out of 15 September games, including 8 out of their last 10. They have beat the division leading Tigers, badly I might add, all four times they’ve played. No Meche, no Guillen, no Bannister, no problem. Lenny DiNardo, Mitch Maier, and Robinson Tejeda have stepped into their places admirably. Sure, it may be late, but winning baseball is happening in Kansas City, and there are only a couple of weeks left until its gone, possibly until next September.

So stay strong, and for all the reasons I’ve mentioned above, keep watching the Royals.

I meant startling.

As Corban pointed out to me today, people just can’t read enough about Yuniesky Betancourt. I mean the guy is a treasure. Well, there is some positive news on the Yuni front: he has had a marvelous month of August at the plate to this point. Look at these August splits for Mr. B compared to his July…

July: 49 abs produced a line of .122/.120/.163 good for an OPS of .283 and an OPS+ of -25. Remind you of any other recent Royals shortstops?

August: 49 abs (so far) have produced a line of .306/.382/.612(!) good for an OPS of .994(!!!!) and an OPS+ of 150. That would be the best hitting shortstop in the league if expanded to a full season.

Obviously, these are very small sample sizes, but it will be quite interesting to document the offensive progress of what is still likely one of the worst acquisitions in the history of the Royals.

As far is defense is concerned… I’ll leave that to Mr. Posnanski to tell it how it is.

The Mariners love small ball. Head hauncho, Don Wakamatsu, runs his players wild on the base paths,

The Mariners love small ball. Head hauncho, Don Wakamatsu, runs his players wild on the base paths, and it’s killing this offense. Run expectancy(RE) is a excellent stat to look at when determining the expected returns on a given play, like stealing or sacrificing. Basically, run expectancy (RE) is how many runs are expected to score from a given situation in an inning. For instance, with a runner on second and 2 outs, the major league RE over the last five years is about 0.35 runs. How can this help us? I’m glad you asked…

Let’s start with base stealing. Say there are none out and a runner on first. Whether or not the manager should send the runner depends entirely on the his stealing percentage. Major league RE with a runner on first and none out is 0.91 runs, nearly a full run. If the base runner succeeds in stealing second, then he has increased RE to 1.15, whereas if he get caught, run expectancy plummets to 0.29 – since there are now no base runners and 1 out. The expected gains of stealing the base are only 0.24 runs, while the risk of getting caught costs 0.62 runs. To break even, the runner has to be able to steal consistently at 72%.

Stealing third has to be done even more efficiently, since losing a runner on second to a base stealing mishap is even more costly, and gaining third isn’t often such an improvement. The RE of a runner on second with none out is, again, 1.15 runs. The marginal benefit of stealing third is about 0.3 runs, while the costs of getting caught are 0.86 runs. Now the percentage needed to break even is 75%.

Below I have filled out the rest of the possible situations for stealing each base with 0, 1 and 2 outs, and all the percents needed to break even…

Outs — > 0 1 2

Base

2nd 72% 73% 68%

3rd 75% 70% 93%

Home 94% 73% 34%

As you can see, the best times for stealing certain bases completely depend on the situation. Attempting to swipe third with two outs goes back to the old saying, “Don’t get the third out at third.” No out can score you from third with two outs unless the Ump can’t count, and a majority of hits will score the runner regardless of whether he’s on second or third. However, the numbers show that it’s slightly more advantageous to steal second with two outs. This puts a runner into scoring position, yet not much is lost if the runner is caught. A manager should always know the situation and his player’s base-stealing ability before putting on the sign.

Not surprisingly, the Ms lead the league in getting caught at third, and they steal third at 61% as a team. It doesn’t matter the situation, 61% stinks.

With run expectancies in mind, let’s move on to sacrificing. Is giving up an out worth the extra base? Again it depends on the situation, but generally, no. Managers like Wakamatsu often put on the sacrifice with either zero or one out and a runner on first in order to get him into scoring position. With none out, a successful sacrifice actually lowers run expectancy – from 0.91 to 0.71! With one out, the result is basically the same. RE is reduced from 0.55 to 0.35, another loss of 0.2 runs. This all assumes that sacrifices are successful 100% of the time. They aren’t. The league succeeds in sacrificing about 70% of time, and the other 30% result in the lead runner becoming a casualty.

Even with runners on first and second, the expected gains from sacrificing are negative. So why would a manager ever sacrifice? Well since baseball doesn’t exist only in numbers, and every player that comes to the plate is NOT the league average player, there are certain situations in which a sacrifice may be beneficial. If a very poor hitter is at the plate, like a pitcher or Yuniesky Betancourt, then a sacrifice may be the way to go, since the likelihood that the batter does something productive is slim.

What most people don’t think about is that the sac isn’t even a done deal. Like a said, it is only successful 70% of the time – perhaps 80% with a good bunter. The Mariners are the ONLY American League team in the top 15 in sac attempts. Without their pitchers batting, that figure is impressive, very negatively impressive.

Franklin Gutierrez seems to be the king of Wakamatsu’s attempt at killing an already bad offense with small ball. Gutierrez has been caught twice stealing third (no successes), and is only 5/8 stealing second for a total stealing percentage of 50%. Ouch! He bunts pretty well, apparently, going 8/10 in sacrifice attempts this season and 76% for his career. But being one of the Mariners’ better hitters, why is he the one bunting? When he swings away with men on base, Gutierrez reaches safely 40%* of the time and – according to baseballreference.com – his outs are productive 31% of the time. That means that 71% of the time, Gutierrez does at least the work of a sacrifice, and in 40% of plate appearances he does much better than a sac…when allowed to swing away.

There is a time and place for everything. The Mariners steal second well as a team, at 75%, and there’s no reason to halt that. Yet an over-calling of this small ball crap is hurting a Mariners offense that needs every run it can get.

*Includes errors and intentional walks

Surviving 1.967 days in the Colombian jungle.
