HP has produced some new netbook models, the HP mini 1000 and the Compaq mini 700. On the whole, they’re pretty much identical, although the 700 will retail at a hundred quid less than its brother at £299.

The HP mini 1000 isn’t the first mini laptop produced by Hewlett-Packard, having aired the HP 2133 mini-note last year. And it was a quite credible effort – standing out from the crowd of Eee PC copycats. The mini-note was in essence a fantastic chassis, although let down somewhat by what was inside; the CPU and battery. So what can the mini 1000 do better?

For a start, HP have shred away the aluminium, replacing it with plastic; disappointing maybe, but it may help take the sting out of the price tag, and incidentally the previously bulky weight which is supposedly nearer 1.1 kilos. In the end this makes sense, since a netbook is supposedly small, light and cheap – if you want a touch of class mixed in as well, you’ll be paying for it – the Sony VAIO TT and Apple MacBook Air both soar well over a grand. HP has also cut the dimensions, making it barely over an inch thick.

The huge keyboard remains, stretching all the way to the edges and far down the main tray. The touchpad as a result is rather narrow and the mouse buttons are located on the side like the Acer Aspire One, which is extremely irritating! Scrolling on webpages is also compromised by the narrow touchpad. That said the keyboards on HP netbooks remain the best out there – so far anyway.

The eviction of the former slow Via C7-M processor can only be a good thing. The replacement industry standard 1.6GHz Intel Atom (with 1GB of RAM) brings the performance on par with other mini laptops. Performance, whilst now improved isn’t the top selling point on the HP though, think keyboard and widescreen.

Speaking of the widescreen, it is 10.1 inch in a ‘media-friendly’ 16:9 aspect ratio. The Compaq 700 however has 10.2 inch in a 16:10 aspect ratio. The difference seems pretty minimalist; it’s hard to justify the £100 premium. The mini 1000 does net an “exquisite onyx casing” though if that tickles your fancy. Other features of the Compaq include a built-in webcam, microphone, WLAN, Bluetooth and optional WWAN.

The Compaq should be hitting the shelves in the next few weeks, right and ready for Christmas. The mini 1000 is to follow in mid-February 2009, preceded a month earlier by the Vivienne Tam Edition mini 1000 which features an attractive feminine flowerlike motif in a rich red colour. Designed for so called ‘fashionistas’ who don’t want to be perceived as a geek as they whip out there netbook – of course you can expect to pay a premium for the privilege. The Vivienne Tam Edition will retail at the same price as the original mini 1000 – £399 – although for fifty quid more you could have your hands on the Eee PC S101.

The Compaq mini 700 is to be sold by network providers with HSDPA included, that is 3G “anywhere” mobile broadband. HP seem to have cracked the netbook specs then – small, cheap (questionable), and light and connected. But it’s a pity about only having 2 USB ports and one port for both sound input and output though. They have however, included a “HP Mini Mobile Drive” – essentially a USB port for special HP USB memory sticks only – really helpful.

None the less, HP have certainly mounted a credible challenge to Asus and particularly other 10 inch laptops, playing to it’s strengths of the keyboard and looks and bringing the performance up to standard with the Atom. The thinness is also a great selling point. Battery life remains at the mercy of the 3-cell battery, with will provide power for around 2 hours 30 minutes use, enough for a film perhaps. Apparently a 6-cell version is in the pipeline – perfection may be near!

8. Promote balance with sandals. It is really no surprise that sandals have been chosen to help increase and promote balance. Practitioners of yoga have even adapted sandals with individual straps between each toe to encourage an increased sense of balance in the art of yoga.

9. They’re the original footwear from history. Sandals are time tested, having stood the test of time longer than any other form of footwear. The tennis shoe has been around for decades, the boot for centuries, but the sandal has been in use for millenniums. That must speak for something.

10. Sandals show expression. Sure, all kinds of shoes can be fashion-forward. However, no other form of footwear is as conducive to showing off a fun and funky sense of style and spirit like the sandal.

In this post, considering I have just bought Windows 7, I thought I would compile an article which reviews the new features of Microsoft’s new OS.

Desktop:

The first contact you will have after installing Windows 7 is the desktop, as you can tell from the screenshot above, quite alot is different, i.e. the taskbar. Let’s have a look at this in greater detail!

Taskbar:

Yes, this is one of the biggest updates of the taskbar I have seen. Instead of displaying the full programme name, only the icon is displayed. In the example above I am hovering over the Internet Explorer tab, in which I have 3 browsing tabs open, just by hovering over the IE logo, a screenshot of all tabs open in IE is displayed.

When you right click on a specific icon (in this case iTunes) a programm-specific menu is displayed – with items such as “Shuffle all library” and “Shop on iTunes store”, these factors increase the ease of access.

Start Menu

At frist glance, you could say that the taskbar looks the same as in Vista. Well you are wrong – take another look, you will see that your default programmes for E-mailing and internet browsing are no longer displayed above the line – in fact the line has gone!! This leaves you with more space to pin more items that you frequently use to the start menu, this again leading to faster access to the items you use the most.

In addittion, if you take a glance at, say the Adobe Dreamweaver label, you will see that a “>” is displayed, if you hover over this, in the sidebar of the start menu, the most recent documents opened with Dreamweaver will be displayed.

Windows XP Mode:

Just a few notes:

Windows XP is mode is only available on Microsoft Windows 7 Proffessional and Ultimate (Which I Use). It is also required that you download this extra content from the Microsoft Website.

Yes, if you have programmes which only work with Windows XP, you are in look (if you have Windows 7 Proffessional or Ultimate) you can download the extra content, and run Windows XP inside Windows 7.

Documents Browser

In Windows 7, even the document window got a make over! As you can see, in the sidebar, there are now more links to:

• Your favourites
• Your library (e.g. Documents, Pictures)
• Computer
• Network

I feel that this is a very easy tool to help you navigate around your files and folders.

A Few Bad Points:

• In Windows 7, the parental controls software has been removed, however, you can download Windows Live Family Safety (similar to parental controls) - this can be downloaded from the Microsoft website.
• It may take you some time to get familiar with the new look operating system, especially the taskbar (to be honest, this baffled me for a while.)
• If you have portable devices (such as iPods, USBs and phones) your computer will need to install the driver software again.

My Overall Personal Opinion:

Well, in just under 490 words, I have managed to summarise the best new features of Windows 7, and overall it would be a good idea to upgrade to the new OS. Why? well, if you are a user of Windows Vista, you will be familar with the UAC (User Account Control), this became very annoying after a while, in Windows 7, this feature has been removed (or you can turn it off!). Also, this latest release also appears to speed up your PC. You also get the new IE 8, which is a bonus – as this runs quite fast!

My Rating:

4/5: Excellent, however you may struggle at first to get familiar with the new features, this shouldn’t take long though!

The thrilling speed and the ambience inside is just mind blowing. But suddenly I am transported back to the line of events that brought me here.

It was a very dull day at college, returning at 4.10 from the institute on a broken rickety rickshaw. One of my friends was along with me, we were chatting when he suddenly says, “Do you know there is a company coming to take summer interns?”

“No”, I said.

“Well there is one called Goldman Sachs, coming next month.”

“What does the company do?”

“No idea”, he said.

That was the first place I heard about it. Called up a few seniors, asked for some help but no one had any idea. Terrible

One month later, notices were put out for the Goldman Sachs interview. I didn’t know about it, so I thought, forget it. Sometimes later TATA and others would come and I would surely get into one of them.

A day before it was suppossed to come, my friends ersuade me to go for it. After all, whats the harm in sitting for it, you can always refuse it. I went to the placement office, but they aren’t ususally helpful, till you are having a good job, so I got no help.

I went back to my room, got out a pair of trousers, and a shirt, as well as a tie. But one thing was missing. No black shoes! The first person who came to my mind was Jay, my NRI buddy there, and one of my best friends. Jay never refused anything, and this time, he gladly allowed me to have his shoes. So on the morning of that day, I got into my formal attire, went to Jay’s room, put on the shoes, and went for it.

Then the usual, PPT, written tests, group discussion, and all. I did not know anything about Goldman Sachs, and perhaps that was a very big advantage. I was not at all stressed, because I THOUGHT that I had nothing to lose. I went to everything very easily, coz the written tests (no coding skills required), and the GD was a cakewalk. However, I went for the interview, and in a moment I knew I had screwed it up.

“CAn I ask you soe questions on Data Structures?” asked Shiv.

“I don’t know.”

“C++?”

“Neither”, I said.

“C?”

“I’m sorry…”

“So do you have any knowledge of coding?”

“Nopes”, I said.

Still the THOUGHT that it was just some other company, and I needn’t worry about it, kept me at ease. I DID have an interview, that went on for 40 mins, and I went on quite casually.

Things happened as usual, I was the least likely one to get through, I knew. Selection procedures continued as usual, and at midnight, they got ready to announce the results. Among the whole group, as it gathered, I just moved a little back, I knew I wasn’t going to be selected. Thats OK. TATA Uncle is there, right? (No!!!)

The first name they announced was mine.

You’re kidding right? Thats not happening!!! I couldn’t comprehend what they said… was it Sudeep or Sudipta? I will never forget that moment when Pant Sir himself called me out to come in front… It was like a dream.

The next thing I remember was my flight to Bangalore, in the summer of 2008. 2 montths, the most awesome days days in my life. Working hard, partying harder. Like BEEN THERE, DONE THAT! It was only then that I realised the heavy weight that Goldman Sachs was in the industry, everywhre we went with our ID card, people greetd us with awe. But perhaps, our idea of Goldman Sachs, was to come even later. Worked on four projects (the only one to do so), and played lots of foosball. And everyone wondered, how I did so much in so little time. A company that can dig into your hidden skills (in my case I never knew I had any), what more can you want?

Came back to college, and terrible days waiting for the offer. WE (read Rahul and I) used to sit for hours outside the TP office, and come back sad. LnT came for placements, I made it through. Still I was sad. After working at GS, you cannot work at any of those indian companies. The culture is so different.

The offer came, and a lot of things changed. I used to get a lot of honour from the TP office, but the Department hated me. One of our profs said “GOLDMINE SACKS”, does it carry Gold from mines in sacks? If any profasked me where I had got placed, I would have to say LnT. Else they would fail me in the labs.

September 2008. The worst days of my life. The finance market was crumpling in the US. First Bear Stearns, then Fannie Mac, Freedie Mae, Lehman Brothers, Wachovia, almost every company was disappering. Citibank’s shares were cheaper than a bottle of mineral water. Everyone said, the next to go will be morgan Stanley, and/or Goldman Sachs.

I thought our days of glory were numbered. Every sudden fall in the share prices of GS caused our heart to skip a beat. If anything we thought of was that, would GS be there tomorrow?

All of them vanished away, even Morgan Staney changed its business model. But Goldman Sachs stayed. Even bigger, even bolder. First as a Bank Holding Company, now as a Financial Holding Company.

Summer of 2009. The first flight from Calcutta to Bangalore, then Bangalore to New York. To a place I have always dreamt of, but never thought that I would be there so soon. In the world’s most powerful company. Staying at the best places. Travelling in the best cars, and being a part of a team, whose presence at every point in the firm, ensures that the firm continues to breathe and its heart continues to beat.

Sitting here thinking about things….you know, people can’t spend their physical lives just doing what they hate for a “living” — me, I’d rather end this lifetime RIGHT NOW than be faced with spending the rest of my time working a “job” I hate, that is probably useless and boring, and does no good for society.

But some people are apparently satisfied living their lives like that.  If you are one of them, good luck, it’s something you have chosen to do.  I couldn’t do it.  But remember – NO ONE has to “do” anything.  If people simply aligned their minds with the Universe — well, let just say the world would be a hell of a different place, that is for sure….it has taken me years to stop fighting the flow of the Universe — and to start relaxing and going with it….and once I started doing that, things in my life just started coming together…..

Before all of this stuff started, I often sat around hoping I would be able to “get by” somehow until my “death”, doing something, I didn’t know what; truth be told, I didn’t know what the hell to do….I sure as hell didn’t want to spend my life hating everything I do and suffering from extreme depression….no way could I handle that…

Lots of times, I thought of “killing” myself, but ended up not doing it for the fear of crossing over after my “death”, and then discovering that my life was about to change big-time for the better the very next week, or even the next day – talk about ultimate humiliation!  I couldn’t take that chance.

But finally, events seem to be coming together to propel me and Jeremy (my best friend and business partner in this company) to new heights.

Look – all I have ever wanted is to help people – that is it…and finally my dream is coming true – my destiny is at hand……finally….

I have had great success with using NLP. One of my pro bono client’s had an addiction for chocolate and desperately wanted to give it up. I used the Swish technique and she has not had or any desire to eat chocolate for over 4 weeks now.

Another one of my clients wanted to stop eating Mac Donald’s hamburger, once again I completed one of the NLP techniques, and the same result has occurred. She couldn’t believe it herself, she has no desire to ever eat a hamburger again. I strongly recommend this safe and fast NLP practice. It is truly creating some amazing results.

First of all let me say that I have been playing World of Warcraft since November 2006 and I have loved every minute of it. From the moment I first booted it up and created my human warlock I was hooked. So you can imagine my surprise when I installed Aion on a whim, and shock-horror, found it to be better in almost every way! Now, dont imagine I make this claim lightly. I love everything about WoW – I have read most of the novels, subscribe to the blogs and am a regular on the forums. But no matter how I look at it, there is no escaping the facts – Aion is a more polished and engaging game. In the following paragraphs I will outline the Top 4 Reasons why Aion is better than WoW.

Number One: Graphics

Now  I know this isn’t supposed to be the most important thing, but when you compare the two games side-by-side, WoW really is starting to show its age. Blizzard have done an amazing job ensuring that WoW will operate on a large range of PC’s and laptops. Aion on the other hand utilises much newer technology and ironically runs smoother and faster than WoW on my machine. All this with crisp and detailed graphics which really help immerse the player in the game world. The most appropriate word to describe the graphics in Aion is “stunning”. Unfortunately for WoW, the best I can say is “adequate”.

Number Two: Flying

Both games offer players the chance to see the game world from the air. In WoW a player must level their character to level 60 before sinking some serious gold into learning the flying skill. Again at 70, the price for epic flying is still 5000 gold, with another 1000 gold needed for Cold Weather Flying in the latest expansion. In Aion on the other hand, flying is an integral part of the game mechanics, rather than a gimmicky add-on. Also players learn to fly at level 10(a few hours of playing). Flying is essential in questing, dungeons and also interestingly, PVP.

Number Three: Difficulty

WoW has changed a lot since release and most would say for the better. Quests have become streamlined, elites have been nerfed and things have been made a lot easier to level. This is because the game really starts at max level for PVP and raiding. Now take Aion, which does not focus so much on max level content. The journey is as rewarding as the destination, and competitive world PVP starts at level 25. So while it will take you much longer to level up in Aion compared to WoW, there is a corresponding feeling of achievement due to the feeling of having really “earned” your place in the game.

Number Four: Community

I know this isn’t Blizzard’s fault, but the WoW community tend to be mostly players who have been in the game for a long time now. Aion is brand new, everyone is starting fresh. This means that there is a level playing field to a larger extent than in WoW. No high level mains funding alts, no “heirloom” items to make it faster to level alts. It also means more people want to experience group quest and dungeon content in Aion. Contrast this to current day leveling in WoW, where people are in such a rush to hit max level they skip the low level dungeons and group content.

Believe me when I say it wasn’t easy for me to critique World of Warcraft like that, but there is no avoiding the facts. WoW’s time is coming to an end, though I’m sure the new expansion Cataclysm will drag out its live expectancy for a few months longer. Aion on the other hand is just taking off, and I for one am glad to be in on the ground floor!

It is 2:49am and I still can’t sleep. If I could tell you the story about tonight, I would. Har-har. But it would probably make you think you’ve gone insane or something, so I might as well stay on the safe side and not say anything

A lot of people have been asking me to watch New Moon. Well, not a lot actually. Just 3 people. Teehee. First, it was Amalina, then, my college friends. Then, Sorfina. OK, first of all, I’m sorry but I have class until 6:30pm until 4th of Dec. So, I would not be free on weekdays (probably at night, sure but it’d be quite hard for others, right?)

Then, tomorrow, I can’t go with my college friends because I have to go join my family for Eid al-Adha. Knowing that, I texted Mr L and asked him whether he’d be up to watch the movie with me or not. Somehow, I feel like it’s OUR movie thingie. I mean, back when we were in Form 3, I lent him my Twilight book and he read it. Then, a year (or so) later, we went to watch the movie together at Pavilion! (haha, the place has nothing to do with the main point actually)

OK, I know he has not read New Moon (I think), but I just think that it would be somehow more “special” if I watch it with him. We both agreed that Twilight movie sucked and that the book was way better. It’s the same with the Sushi King matter. He said that he doesn’t eat there with anyone else but me, so I guess, it goes the same for the movie

HOWEVER, he told me that he is still not sure, so, yeah, whatever

Then, later at night, Sorfina texted me asking me about watching New Moon. And I felt somewhat “stuck” and guilty. I still am not sure with whom am I going to watch the movie with but still! Sigh. I’ll tell her later about this (IF she doesn’t read this first!)

OK, what the hell am I doing. I actually told myself not to write about Mr L anymore in here and then I went and told everyone about the movie thingie. Nevermind. Just one little information won’t hurt, right? Bla bla bla. It’s MY blog anyway.

I also want to watch Christmas Carol and Planet 51. I know, very childish of me but I cannot help it. I like cartoons and animated movies! Seriously!

Hmmm. I am probably going to class late tomorrow Going to have breakfast first with someone (obviously it is Mr L). Besides, Malaysian studies bore the brains out of me. I seriously felt sleepy just now despite the fact that I drank a can of Nescafe Mocha before going to class. I am the type who gets seriously affected by coffee and there was I, still feeling sleepy! That shows just how boring Malaysian studies are! Grrr

What else what else. I am still not blogging about my trip because I think it may take a few hours to actually finish a whole post about it. Tonight is just not the night. I am just enjoying the fact that I have the house all to myself Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
