Author Elizabeth Bettina spoke to an enthralled audience on Wednesday, November 18, 2009.  She discussed her experience of discovering that many of her childhood village’s residents risked their lives to shelter and save hundreds of Jews during the Holocaust.

Work by Vered Lahav from "Sleepless" exhibition

Had a great time in the Midlands since Wednesday. Vered Lahav’s show at Wolverhampton Art Gallery was beautiful, very inspiring!  I was surprised by the piece that I found the most moving – a video triptych. She had captured moments of beauty in the ordinary, things that we can choose to see and savour in our life but that could just as easily pass us by. Subtle, poignant, and magical. Also very inspiring was the wonderful catalogue collaboration that had been produced for her exhibition. Written as a fairytale it was every bit as exquisite as the works themselves.

Vered’s show is showing at the same time as Jann Haworth’s retrospective at the gallery so it was a shared private view. I enjoyed seeing Jann’s work and hearing something of the background to some of her pieces like the wonderfully huge textile charm bracelets. Her work had some similarities in feeling to Kirsty E. Smith’s who  I visited the next day. It was great to finally see Kirsty’s work in the flesh and particularly loved her pieces Bettina (recently sold to an overseas art collector!) and the fabulous Tall Legs.

The other good news was that I was contacted by the gallery in Poole to say that one of the three pieces that I took up on Monday had made it through the second judging round and will be shown in the Reopen exhibition which opens on Saturday. The piece chosen was Pigeons Dubrovnik - which I made for my friend Deans birthday and blogged about fairly recently.   Reopen is Poole’s second open art exhibition, ”a celebration of the act of reusing, reassembling, and rethinking”. The exhibition will be held at Poole’s flagship venues, Lighthouse, Pooles Centre for the Arts, and KUBE(formerly The Study Gallery of Modern Art) and runs from Saturday 7th of November till 19th December.

Il 23 aprile scorso si è aperto ufficialmente il centenario dalla morte della Beata Bettina, Patrona di Campi Bisenzio avvenuta il 23 aprile 1910. Il Comitato celebrazioni promuoverà fino all’aprile prossimo iniziative e manifestazioni, che coinvolgono tutte le parrocchie del territorio.

Relatori Monsignor Stefano Manetti, rettore del Seminario, professor Carmelo Mezzasalma fondatore della comunità di San Leolino. A seguire cena con buffet. Alle ore 21 concerto d’archi nella chiesa di San Frediano al Cestello.

(TRAILBREAKER) Beim Vorbereitungsrennen auf den WM-Lauf 2010 gewinnt Teamfahrer Björn Papstein über 107 km seine Wertung in der Gruppe LS1 (Lizenz Senioren1). Overall reichte es für tollen Rang 15.

Teamkollege Holger Sievers brach das Rennen nach der ersten Zwischenzeit ab…

Bettina Dietzen vom CONWAY-Factory-Team gewann die Hobby-Wertung Damen über 53 km.

Semana passada, uni o útil (viajar!) ao desagradável (trabalhar! OK, tô brincando) e fui para San Diego. Cidade que, se alguém não sabe, fica muuuiiiito longe de New York: são 6:40hs de vôo e um fuso de 3 horas.

Uma boa dica, que aliás vale pra qualquer lugar que você decida visitar, é ter o Brian e a Bettina por lá. Explico: é um casal de amigos de minha filha que mora lá e se propôs a me ciceronear.  Os coitados não contavam com o fato de a cinquentona aqui acordar cedo, dormir tarde, e querer ver tudo.

San Diego ocupa a posição de 7a. maior cidade dos EUA mas, por ser muito espalhada, tem o ar de uma pequena cidade do interior. Cada uma de suas áreas tem características e charmes próprios, e todas valem a visita.

Num mesmo dia você consegue estar no litoral, no deserto, e nas montanhas.

Comecei meu passeio pelo Old Town, recomendação da Lu Betenson. Apesar dos muitos restaurantes e barzinhos, o que mais me chamou a atenção – e me empobreceu consideravelmente – foram as várias lojas de artesanato.

A proximidade com a fronteira do México traz  diversidade e cor à cultura local. E bote cor nisso.

Fica em Old Town a primeira escola construída em San Diego (1865), muito bem conservada – exceto (cala-te, boca) pela recepcionista : ela poderia tranquilamente passar por uma boa reforma.

La Jolla ( diz-se lahóia) é um lugar adorável: praias maravilhosas, lojas e restaurantes sofisticados, e as residências mais incríveis.

E foi lá que tive a primeira de várias reuniões com a família.

Em seguida, seguindo pelo litoral, chega-se a Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, e  a outras tantas Beaches que infelizmente não tive tempo de conhecer.

Mas o que eu não poderia deixar de fazer, porque nunca tinha feito, era visitar o deserto. Infelizmente, devido à limitação de tempo, não pude ir até o deserto de Mojave, que está na minha lista de “to see” há vários anos. Mas foi igualmente belo conhecer o Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, que fica a 2 horas de carro por uma estradinha tão cheia de curvas que, quando você finalmente percebe a mudança na paisagem, você acha que está sonhando.

A vegetação, belíssima.

Em Downtown, onde fiquei, estão os grandes hotéis, escritórios, o GasLamp District (coalhado de restaurantes das mais diversas nacionalidades, inclusive uma churrascaria brasileira, O Rei do Gado, cujo dono é….coreano!).
Fica também em Downtown o Harbor de San Diego, com o Aircraft Carrier Museum e o Maritime Museum. E o Seaport Village, outro centrinho repleto de restaurantes e lojinhas – e onde consegui aumentar signficativamente minha já extensa coleção de patrícios.

Last but not least, o lugar de que mais gostei: Balboa Park. Um dos vários parques dessa cidade repleta de áreas verdes, ele foi reestruturado em 1915 para abrigar uma exposição comemorativa do término da construção do Canal do Panamá.  Assim como a Museum Mile em New York, a Avenida El Prado também abriga os melhores museus da cidade.

Ah, uma curisosidade: este parque já foi cenário de muitos filmes, sendo o mais famoso deles “Citizen Kane” de Orson Welles.

Pra quem gosta de golfe, San Diego é um prado cheio, quer dizer, um prato cheio: são mais de 60 campos. Pra quem não gosta, como eu, você nem percebe que eles existem: na verdade, não vi nenhum. Ou só vi verde.

No últmo dia, a despedida da família, e a certeza de que voltarei para outras reuniões.

Meu único consolo foi ver que  levei meu casal de guias à exaustão física…e eles têm apenas 30 aninhos! Quer dizer, a cinquentona deu o maior baile. O que eles não sabem entretanto é que, depois que me deixaram no  hotel, eu nunca mais consegui me mexer…

I loved so many things about these episodes that I don’t even know where to start. The waiting room cinematography during Nate’s surgery, for one. Brenda and Maggie purposefully removed from everyone–I especially loved the cuts where Maggie is in the foreground, with Brenda in the back, silent. The fact that Ruth was not there, was not there the one moment she really felt her child desperately needed her, after a lifetime of waiting idly by when they didn’t. Even though Nate is in critical condition (and then is dead), the ensemble doesn’t miraculously find this strength, this connection, this tolerance; what closeness they have must simply suffice.

The key to Six Feet Under is its ability to give rise to a plethora of emotion–5×09 embodied stillness. (Ironically, the same stillness Claire professed to feeling, and attempted to capture, back in art school.) Waiting. Moments where nothing was said and everything was understood, conversations that in the end meant nothing. One moment stretched over a hundred thousand hours.

5×10 was a different kind of emptiness. The title was “All Alone” (though this theme came into play more thoroughly in the episode that followed, as they so often do). Preparing for Nate’s funeral felt like…finding an empty bowl where your stomach once was, with sides so smooth it made the emptiness that much more apparent. Ruth’s grief over her absence and Claire’s sudden guilt over Nate’s untimely death were exceptionally well played–one of the most poignant scenes was when Claire recounted to Ted an incident that happened between her and Nate, after her father died. An interview for class, to get to know a member of your family better–Nate said no.

And here Claire is, burying her brother, whom she loved, but could never know as well as she now wishes.

Bettina and Sarah’s presences were much-needed and oddly comforting. Rico’s eulogy was the most fitting for Nate, and certainly the most personally resonant for me (and I don’t say this out of bias for Rico’s character).

But Nate’s burial was beautiful. Imperfect, practical (difficulty carrying the body to the plot and dropping it, Rico making sure everyone has a ride and Brenda has the directions and the ‘funeral’ placard), yet beautiful. That they all had a hand in burying Nate, without the formality of actually taking turns, felt whole. And for some reason, I really liked that Claire was the one to volunteer to help lift Nate’s body into the plot, and the first after David and Rico to shovel; for the same reason (or lack thereof) I liked that the scene ended with Ruth taking hold of a shovel as well.

Brenda’s reticence, her sense of being apart from everyone else–both because she has always been an outsider in this world, to some degree, and because of what happened between Maggie and Nate–was fitting, as was her subsequent collapse afterward.

5×11 takes place six weeks later (with Rico concerned about the future of the business, and David concerned that Rico won’t leave him the fuck alone for a while longer); Ruth is coping. Brenda is facing custody issues–the ugly truth after the death of a spouse. Claire and David are self-destructing, as the Fishers will. If 5×09 is stillness and 5×10 is emptiness, then 5×11 is illness (and not because of the various physical and mental traumas the cast faces). There’s an ugly feeling in the pit of your stomach–vaguely reminiscent of what you feel when you’ve lost something and you wish you’d kept closer watch of it when you had the chance. There are things you don’t want to address or face, things unearthed for all the world to see that you honestly hadn’t expected (Brenda’s brief erotic incestuous thoughts, the resurgence of David’s post-stress anxieties).

But life moves on. That Claire ends up totaling her hearse–and with it, the last vestiges of her old life and its ghosts–was oddly touching. And even if it makes Rico look somewhat like an enterprising prick, the funeral home doesn’t close when one of its own dies. I loved that the first person he called after leaving a message with David was Vanessa. That he felt like he could ask her such a favor speaks well of their healing marriage, both in terms of their interpersonal relationship and how Rico views it (which reflects on a scene from 5×09 which I loved, though commentary on it felt tremendously out of place given the more salient events in 5×09–the late night conversation between Rico and Vanessa, where Vanessa attempts to explain her feelings for him).

In all, the disc left me hanging in my own personal bubble, apart from everything, subdued. It’s the first time Six Feet Under has ever left me quite like that–sheer elation, profound hopelessness, extreme frustration and general depression, sure. But instead of spurring me to scream, this is like a great, slow breath out.

Her har jentene fått ferten av noe, og småboffer litt og sånn. Casper aner ikke hva som foregår, men føler jo at han må være med han og… morsomt å se hvordan han hermer altså, kom noen boff fra ham og.

Og det gjorde det… et par med barnevogn, en liten sønn, og en hund… og alle tre dalmisene stormet jo bjeffende mot dem da, og vi fikk ikke kalt dem tilbake. Dritflaut Unnskylde oss til mannen, som sa det var helt greit (danske ikke sant), men han smilte ikke akkurat… de slapp løs hunden, og hundene våre konsentrerte seg om den. Men den lille sønnen begynte jo å løpe etter familiens hund, og da var vi litt redde for at han skulle bli maltraktert av prikker… *ansvarlige hundeeiere* gikk heldigvis bra da.

Også kom det en irsk setter… har møtt den før, og som vanlig var den langt foran eieren. Siden den og var løs gadd vi ikke ta inn våre hunder og. Men stakkars setteren, som er litt nervøs av seg virker det som, synes nok ikke det var så gøy med tre prikker i helene

…så den satte seg skjelvende ned, og ble glad da eieren sin kom…
