News of Ricky Whittle’s arrest this morning in Liverpool has seen his odds to win Strictly Come Dancing 7 immediately lengthen to 2-1.

Whittle, who was odds-on to win only hours ago has now slipped behind Ali Bastian (8-5) in the pecking order, with bettors on the BBC hit show keeping a close eye on developments as they break.

The value bet might be Everton (draw no bet) @6/4, buti f Torres is fit and plays, then I might just fancy Liverpool to edge it. But as we won’t know about his fitness until tomorrow:

There’s been a lot of talk coming from Arsenal camp that this game may define their season, which I see as just a bit of paper talk, as although it’s a massive tie- it’s nowhere near do or die yet! Is another tough one to call, but i really like the way that Chelsea are playing at the moment, and believe that they have the quality and depth to win out this season. As always, looking for near evens to keep the bankroll building:

Dolphins (-3) over BILLS

It seems the Bills are using the wildcat pretty effectively with Fred Jackson in the backfield.  But the Fins are the father of the modern wildcat, and we’ll see it Sunday.

BENGALS (-14) over Browns

Bengals coming off a loss to the Raiders; and now host the punching bag Browns.  We will not see a repeat of their earlier meeting this season.

Seahawks (-3) over RAMS

The Rams are terrible.  So terrible that the terrible Seahawks are giving three points here.

Panthers (+3) over JETS

I can’t pick the Jets until they win a game.  Last win still Jamarcus-led Raiders.

EAGLES (-9) over Redskins

Eagles keep on rollin’.

Colts (-3.5) over TEXANS

Trap game.  Can’t feel good about picking the Colts here.  Confidence is low on this pick.  Typically undefeated teams stumble against powerful middle-of-the-pack teams.  I can see this going either way, but I’ll pick safe since historically, Colts own the Texans.

Chiefs (+13.5) over CHARGERS

Sure, I’ll take 13.5 especially after coming off an elated win over the Steelers.

49ERS (-3) over Jaguars

The 4-6 host team giving three points to the 6-4 visiting team.  Odd.

TITANS (even) over Cardinals

Both teams very dangerous right now.  I’ll take the team who’s backfield carries Chris Johnson.  Can’t stop gushing over this guy.  We need to start exploring the possibility that if Adrian Peterson is the best back in the league, than Chris Johnson is 1b.

VIKINGS (-10.5) over Bears

I hate that I have to pick the Vikes.  I hate hate hate it.  I’m still bitter at the week 3 last second heart-torn-out-of-every-Niner-fan moment.  But the Bears are awful.  Cutler’s only touchdown last week came when he under threw his receiver while getting hit.  Every other important pass was overthrown by a mile.

Steelers (even) over RAVENS

Both teams are going to come out hitting hard.  I can see this game being either a staunch, defensive grind, or a high powered offensive explosion.

Patriots (+3) over SAINTS

The Patriots are going to win this game.  You heard it from me.  It’s a good thing for the Saints though, they’ll learn more from a loss here, then they will from a win.  The experience of the Patriots will be the difference maker.  Expect playoff intensity from both night games.

This is without a doubt the worst Rangers and Celtic squads that I have seen in the entirety of the time that I have been old enough to have an opinion that counted! (at 30, that’s 15-20 years in case your wondering)

Gone are the days of who’s best. The winner of the SPL is now determined by who is worst! With the glory times over, Gone are the days of high profile signings and big big money getting thrown about for average players (Flo, Rothental, Bratback). The old firm can no longer even afford to simply buy out all the best players from their lesser competitors in order to maintain the gap (Caldwell, Brown, Boyd, Whittaker, Naismith, Hartley……….. This list could go on a while!).

In fact, during this time when both Rangers and Celtic are struggling domestically, and in Europe- I find the fact that they feel hard done by because of their Premiership rejection absolutely hilarious!

A successful strategy that I have enjoyed this year is to oppose whom ever is play the old firm in Europe – home or away!

We’re now more that a quarter of the way through the Scottish season, and we have 3 points separating the top four teams.

Rangers will struggle to dominate an Aberdeen side, who shall be up for this one (why can’t they raise their game against every other team? – this must frustrate reds fans!). Celtic would normally have their match against St Mirren in the books before kick-off, but such outcomes can no longer be banked upon! Neither side shall be on my coupon this weekend! Gone are the days that I am willing to take odds of 1/3, just to boost the winnings- NO THANK YOU! The bookies must be killing themselves laughing this season!

I fancy Hibs to stuff Falkirk this weekend, & the match up between Dundee Utd and Motherwell will keep both sides in touch of the Glasgow giants, regardless of the outcome. But can any of the teams outside the top 2 sustain a run that we are still talking about in May?

Will this be the year of the underdog- probably not. But my top tip in Scotland for the foreseeable future, is to keep clear of the old firm, because their opposition no longer fear them!!!

I Expect Chelsea to be up for this one, and unlike Manchester United, should field their strongest side.  Ancelotti, who has the team firing on all cylinders under his leader ship has hinted that they are out for nothing other than a victory  “It is an important game against Porto. We want to be in the first position in the group and this is the decisive game.” he went on to say “We have to put out the best line-up. Afterward we have time to rest and prepare for Arsenal” (who they face at  the weekend).

Porto have struggled a bit domestically in recent weeks, whilst Chelsea are looking good to me. The stat that sums up the form gap in this one for me is that in the last 5 games Porto have kept only one sheet. Chelsea on the other hand have had 6 shut-outs in the last 7 games.

The 8/5 being offered about the blues is far too good to pass up in my eyes!

The Following Pay Scale is used for 4 in a Group Outing or Novice and Beginners.

Basic Rules (4 in a Group)

$4.50 in Hole Money. Each Hole is worth $.25. If you tie, it carries over to the next hole. If you tie on hole #18, then the winner of hole #17 Wins the money for both holes. $.50..If you tied the 17th hole as well, then the winner of hole #16 Wins the money for all 3 holes. $.75..etc

Bonus Money (Losers PAY to the eventual winner of that hole)

If you shoot an EAGLE you get $2.00 in Bonus Money minus your opponent(s)’ Bonus Money.
If you shoot a BIRDIE you get $1.00 in Bonus Money minus your opponent(s)’ Bonus Money.
If you shoot PAR you get $.50 in Bonus Money minus your opponent(s)’ Bonus Money.
If you shoot BOGEY you get $.25 in Bonus Money.

Penalty Money PAID to the eventual winner of that hole.

If you shoot a TRIPLE BOGEY you also LOSE $.50.
If you shoot a SCORE of TEN or QUIT the HOLE you also LOSE $1.25

This system was designed to instill the phrase, “Never Quit”..In this case, you can control how much you lose, especially if you are shooting for DOUBLE BOGEY. If you miss the hole, you not only lose hole money, but penalty money as well. Every shot in this system means something. Afterall you’re not out there to hear birds chirp, unless it’s a golf ball whirling inside the hole for a BIRDIE!

Kauto Star won, just about got home a nose in front of Imperial Commander. I was surprised by how well Imperial Commander ran, as I didn’t think he would stay in the soft/heavy going. He looks set for the Ryanair at the Cheltenham festival. Long way off yet but I still think that would suit him much better than the Gold Cup over 3m 2f. As for Kauto, they will be pleased with his win and it will be on to the King George. I was also right in that Kauto did shorten up and was returned the 4/6 fav. I was on at 2.1.Unfortunately, Tidal Fury turned out to be a spectacularly bad investment. I backed him at 3’s and he drifted right out to a SP of 10/1 and then ran no sort of race, being tailed off when pulled up a long way from home. Oh well!

On the soccer front, it turned out the right decision to leave Villa unbacked as they could only manage a draw at Burnley. Liverpool could only manage a draw as well. They will need to win in Hungary on Tuesday or it is bye-bye to the Champions League for this year. Without Torres, they look to short the required fire power. Here’s hoping for a turn in the Reds’ forunes.

I would normally be doing some GAA bets, the club championships it would be at this time of year, but I am not really in touch enough to assess what to be backing, as I have been away from home the past 3 weeks. The weather is good here, unlike at home, but the sport is not so good. The basketball can be good sometimes and I see some soccer, US, Mexican and some European, but the American football I can only take in small highlights dosages. The full live game is, well, a bit boring really. And I can’t underatand the college season at all, but the Yanks seem to love it. Oh and my punting and general web surfing is limited by the internet policy of the company I am working for over here that blocks all sports-related web content. That’s 90% what I want to look at barred. For the love of Jaysus.

BERLIN, Nov 21, 2009 (AFP) – Theo Zwanziger, president of the German Football Federation (DFB), on Saturday vowed to punish anyone in Germany involved with the betting scandal which has rocked European football.

European football is reeling after German prosecutors on Friday revealed 200 games are under suspicion of having been rigged in nine countries.

A 200-strong band operating across Europe is suspected of fixing matches in Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Croatia, Slovenia, Turkey, Hungary, Bosnia-Hercegovina and Austria, prosecutors here revealed on Friday.

By bribing players, coaches, referees and officials to influence matches, the gang is thought to have earned as much as 10 million euros (15 million dollars) in huge bets with bookmakers in Europe and Asia, primarily in China.

German on-line magazine Der Spiegel claimed on Saturday a referee from one of the country’s southern regional leagues was bribed in a game here last May and Zwanziger says any DFB members involved will be heavily punished.

“We will punish these people – they do not belong amongst us,” Zwanziger said.

“Where there is money, there is also corruption.

“It is important to get the message across that it is not what has happened, but how we handle it now.”

Around 300 police carried out around 50 raids last Thursday in Germany, Britain, Switzerland and Austria, arresting 15 people in Germany and two in Switzerland. More than a million euros in cash and property were seized.

Two of those arrested last Thursday included two Croatian brothers living in Berlin, Ante and Milan Sapina, who were at the centre of a match-fixing scandal that rocked Germany in 2004.

Investigators are also looking at 32 matches in Germany, including four in the second division, three in the third, 23 games in regional leagues and two under-19 clashes.

Elsewhere, 29 matches in Turkey from the first division downwards, 14 in Croatia’s first division, 13 in Hungary’s first division, eight in Bosnia-Hercegovina’s top flight and 11 in Austria’s first and second leagues.

In Slovenia, seven games in the first division have raised suspicions, as have 22 league games in the Swiss second division and six friendlies, plus 17 in Belgium’s second division, prosecutors said.

They warned that the list could get longer.

The German scandal saw referee Robert Hoyzer jailed in 2005 after admitting receiving almost 70,000 euros (104,000 dollars) and a plasma television from the Croatian brothers to throw games.

The worst European match-fixing scandal to date was the Calciopoli affair in 2006 involving five Serie A clubs, referees and high-ranked Italian football federation (FIGC) officials.

It resulted in heavy punishments for top-flight clubs including Juventus, AC Milan and Fiorentina, with Juventus stripped of the 2004-05 and 2005-06 league titles and were also demoted.

Not a good first blog post this week on betting! Ireland were sensational in Paris and put in a performance that neither I nor most people out there could have expected. On its own I still stand by the fact that this wouldn’t have been enough, but France were dreadful and eventually had to cheat their way to victory. The result wasn’t a million miles away from what I predicted though, just the wrong way around. Zut alors.

Just one other quick point before looking ahead to this weekend’s money-spinning picks, the idea that the game should be replayed because of Henry’s cheating is absolutely barmy. It’s part and parcel of the game and if you can get away with something then that’s that. If we start replaying games for every injustice we’ll never get through a season. Yes, this game was bigger than most, but the Irish need to get real and move on.

So, two selections this weekend. Leicester have been on a good run of form recently with two very good away wins, at QPR and Reading. They lost last time out at home to West Brom, but they are one of the best sides in the league whereas Plymouth are at the other end of the scale. That said, they’re not on a bad run of form themselves, having beaten Doncaster at home last time out and an amazing 1-0 win away at Middlesbrough the time before. That being so might put you off but this game just strikes me as a routine home win, so I’ll be having a couple of shillings on it.

Next, Villa away at Burnley. Before the start of the season you’d have looked at this fixture and made Villa heavy favourites without a thought. Now, however, we see an amazing price of 2.3 on the away side, after a remarkable start to the season by Owen Coyle’s Burnley. They’re been simply brilliant at home and if they are to stay up it is how they perform at Turf Moor that is going to be pivotal.

My view here is that Burnley have had their fair share of results at home and they can’t win them all, that and the fact that Villa destroyed Bolton 5-1 last game and will be hungry to capitalise on their chance to move into the top four if they win here. If they have any long-term ambitions to break into the top four, or even maintain top six, they really need to go and get a result at places like Burnley.

Let’s hope I have a more successful day than midweek!

Can you believe that Michigan is getting 12.5 at home against their arch rivals?  I can’t and I don’t care that Michigan is playing awful.  This is a different game and therefore you must take the 12.5!

I hate to say this, but Notre Dame isn’t as awful as one would think.  Giving up 6.5 is too little against a weak Uconn team.  I mean, we’re talking about a team that’s 1-4 in the Big East.  And while they’re 2-3 on the road, their 2 wins are against miserable teams.  Call this a let down game after taking Cincy to the brink on the road.  I think ND wins by 20 as the Golden Domers play for Weiss.. yes, it’s too late for Jabba.
