I have always loved the anonymous painting, Dogs Playing Poker and so I especially love Silas Kopf’s take on  it in the below masterpiece, “I Think I Only Have A Pair”.

After an exhaustive and exclusive interview with Silas – spanning days, weeks, decades perhaps, in which I followed him around everywhere he went (at times with leaves taped to my turtleneck, jeans, and  wooden platform shoes, [in keeping with the elements of his work], in an attempt to get some candid anecdotalities), even going so far as to hire muscle to forcibly hook him up to various thought-stealing apparatus’, lie detectors, intravenous truth-serum drips, and the like – I managed a rare act of brevity, summarizing all of my notes into the following quote  from Silas regarding his work and the insinuations in this article:

“Perhaps Mr. Munger sees more than I do, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t subliminal perspective.”

It is yet too soon soon to tell if he will succumb to suggestive thought suggestion tactics administered by said muscle and present this piece to Gnome de Pluehm for his birthday bash tomorrow- which I am overseeing in this blog – but we can all only hold our breath and hop (typo, but I’m keeping it).

It is a fine line between Pop Art and kitsch. When Pop first made its way into the art world in the late 1950’s many regarded the movement as kitsch, basically mundane without any real artistic content. What are we to think of an artist who reverses the order, taking kitsch and trying to make it Pop? This is the direction of Silas Kopf’s entry, I Think I Only Have A Pair, in the recent Salon de la Marqueterie Biennial in Marseilles.
Kopf played off the famous painting by C. M. Coolidge of Dogs Playing Poker (1904) (sometimes called “The Bold Bluff”) and turned it on its head by using popular figures apparently involved in a game of cards. I say apparently because there is much more behind the imagery than a simple bit of gambling. At the table are the cartoon figures; Betty Boop, Mr. Peanut, and Daffy Duck. Seated between Duck and Peanut is the pop icon Marilyn Monroe. And does that shock of white hair at the bottom of the picture belong to Andy Warhol himself?

At first glance this appears little more than a cute image of characters engaged in a game of poker. Closer examination reveals many levels of complexity in this deftly executed wooden panel. We rarely see craftspeople draw on art history in executing their works, but it is obvious that Kopf has more than a passing familiarity with Hogarth’s The Rake’s Progress. It won’t be evident to many that Kopf is also referencing the 14th Egyptian Dynasty mural from the tomb of Rehkmire of men playing a game of senet.

Kopf’s gamblers make an odd grouping. Those familiar with his work from the last decade won’t be surprised to see the return of Mr. Peanut and Betty Boop. They were first seen in his 2004 piece, The Gladiators (which was a minor hit on internet porn sites). One wonders if I Think I Only Have A Pair is a sequel or a prequel. The tension in the current work is palpable. Boop appears to fidget nervously unsure of the game. Peanut rises to his full haughty grandeur, jauntily tipping his hat, knowing he is in control. And why shouldn’t he be confident. He has most of the chips! Kopf seems to be making a statement about corporate America and how one of its most important symbols is in charge. He has control of the game and the purse strings and therefore he is dominating the lives of those around him. Is Peanut a cheat? Just what might he be hiding under that top hat?

Poor Marilyn Monroe (literally poor, as she is almost out of chips). Is she a bad player or have others simply taken advantage of her innocence? It is clear that Peanut and Boop don’t have a monopoly on the sexual tension in the picture. Monroe and Duck are sharing more than a side of the table. Each has a hand below the table. Passing cards or copping a feel? You be the judge. Duck’s leering at the pair of the title will make most viewers more than a little uncomfortable. It is difficult to attach a racial aspect to the picture, but it is equally difficult to imagine that an artist of Kopf’s thoughtfulness would have used a black duck and the symbol of white female sexuality unconsciously. Why not the white Donald Duck or the less curvy Olive Oyl? It should be noted that both Daffy Duck and Marilyn Monroe gained fame in the 1950’s, when inter-racial dating was considered somewhat scandalous. Boop and Peanut both came from the swinging twenties, making I Think I Only Have A Pair encompass the sweep of twentieth century America.

The final bit of iconography involves money, wealth, fame, along with sex (isn’t sex really about the money?). Peanut is slowly growing his fortune. The individually colored stacks have grown so large that he is no longer able to keep them organized. He will stop at nothing to dominate the “weaker” sex. Boop seems vulnerable to Peanut (although The Gladiators depicted her holding her own and on top, bringing into question the prequel/sequel issue. No doubt that discussion will have to wait for a longer monograph on Kopf’s career). Although Daffy Duck has quite a bit of the money he is living up to his name, and his chips are all ajumble. The one player whose chips we can’t see is Warhol. Perhaps it is he who has the most chips by parlaying Pop Art into the money making machine that it turned out to be.

I always enjoy the rush at the last minute when I’d be shopping like mad on December 24th for my last minute gifts.

Coats are 30% off at Zellers and it’s just what Santa ordered.

I found some really nice boots there too.

As for my Christmas Shopping, I’ll be checking out the flea markets in several cities.

That’s the best place for deals on designer hand bags, hats, scarves and purses. (London rocks for Flea Market variety in this category)

There’s also unique furniture and custom made dressers, tables and bookcases. (Pickering Flea Market has a great selection)

The St Catharines Flea Market has specials on baked goods, meats, candies, collectibles, Betty Boop, furniture, pets (rabbit and bird food at a discount).

Fresh produce, furniture, tools, books, fishing gear, stereo equipment, cds, and records.

My favorite stand is Fuzzy’s.

She sells books for $1 and makes the best banana bread for $1.50.

Dave sells incense, special herbal products.

You can even buy a bunny for $10, finches for  $10, doves and budgies for under $25  including the cages and food.

We go to the Flea Markets all the time, and find all sorts of cool things to clutter our house with.

Sometime’s we’ll go there for breakfast or lunch, everything is under $5.

Some Flea Markets have a cover charge from 50 cents to 1 dollar.

While other’s charge nothing.

When times are tough you’ve got to look for the best bargains.

I was sad to see that my XPress chinese store was no longer at Niagara Square.

I loved buying Chinese art pieces for my home.

However there is a good gift shop at Niagara Square that sells meditation and classical CDs for $15. (everywhere else they are $30 to $35 for the same ones)

I’ll keep you posted if I see any more bargains out there.

Nå er det en liten stund siden jeg har skrevet noe, men sånn er det når man ikke har så mye å skrive om.

Og det er vel bedre å skrive litt mindre innlegg enn ti om dagen, hæ?

Eneste jeg har gjort i det siste som er verdt å nevne er at jeg, Marius, Nathalie og en annen person som ikke er vits i å nevne navn på dro til Sverige på søndagen. Det var morsomt!

Fikk kjøpt noe også. Bare se:

Vi gikk innom Rockshop eller hva den heter igjen, og da fant jeg en ting som fikk meg til å tenke på min mor. Så jeg kjøpte den like gjerne til henne. ihihi.

Den var ganske fin synes jeg da. Bortsett fra de tre ripene som er på den. Menmen. Jæh.

I går fikk jeg en telefon fra hun jeg tok bilder for i August, hun beklaget jeg masse og sa at hun hadde pengene til meg. Det er november. Hvor vanskelig er det å få tak i tre tusen kroner? Jaja. Etter noen timer fikk jeg en melding. Veldig fine bilder blablabla.. Men hun var skuffet over at hun bare fikk 50 bilder for 3000 kroner. Hun hadde fått det for seg at hun kunne få alle bildene jeg hadde tatt for 5000. Men jeg hadde jo tenkt til å sette en pris for hele greia. Ikke bare for bildene. Jeg må si jeg ble ganske forbannet.

Jeg har faktisk brukt en hel haug med timer på å finne på ideer, faktisk dra dit for å ta bilder og redigering. Hun betaler ikke 3000 for 50 bilder. Hun betaler 3000 kroner for hele jobben. Hvor dum går det ann å bli?

I morgen skal jeg og Marius til Nathalie go det blir fønneh. Vi skal spise masse godteri og brus og dippe og så skal vi på kino og se på filmer, for det er det som vises på kinoer. Filmer.

I saw a car plastered in Betty Boop stickers earlier. I nearly sicked in my mouth! I don’t really get the fascination with the big headed cartoon character to be honest, is it just because when she came out in the 1930’s people were amazed by her prancing around in lingerie and her ’sex appeal’. ( How does she even have sex appeal, she’s a cartoon character! Now Misty from Pokemon on the other hand she was nice…)

Must have been a stricter culture then if people managed to get excited by her. We now have the internet, I think it has ruined most people. In a good way though obviously.

I’ve dressed up as something I’ve wanted to be for the last few years. Yesterday (Halloween), I was a flapper, the quintessential good time girl of the 1920s (think Betty Boop, as one friend told me).

I’m fascinated by the flapper’s image: their sleek and straight dresses, their jewelry, their flirty bobs, their sophisticated joie de vivre, their red lips puffing on a cigarette while holding a martini glass. Of course, Halloween was the only time I could dress up as a flapper without getting strange looks from people.

Three years ago, I purchased a flapper headpiece and a feather boa from Party City, but wasn’t able to buy a flapper dress at that time because, well, they ran out of them. I got a flapper dress from Target, but when I tried it on at a friend’s house (where the Halloween party) was held, it didn’t fit. I figured better bring my dark angel costume in case the flapper dress didn’t fit. And the flapper dress didn’t fit. The two years since then, I didn’t dress up for Halloween because I didn’t go to any Halloween parties. I didn’t want to be all dressed up with nowhere to go.

Halloween 2009 was the day when I finally got the chance to hark back in time to the Jazz Age. I donned a little black dress I’ve had for years – which is good, so that I wouldn’t have to blow $30 on a flapper costume I’d wear once. Plus, I’m recycling and trying to be green. I picked up a pair of bejeweled sheer black gloves, a string of fake pearls and some fake cigarettes from Party City. I’m saddened that Party City didn’t have cigarette holders when I was there. Completing the flapper look with the headpiece and boa I’ve had for a few years, I was itching to listen to jazz and do the Charleston.

I really toted that fake cigarette at my daughter’s Halloween party at her karate school. It was fun too look like I was smoking, but to actually smoke of course wouldn’t be so fun. Even if I wanted to smoke real cigarettes, I couldn’t do it; the fear of cancer in various types, bad odor and premature aging would forever haunt me.

Last year, I read a book called “Flapper: A Madcap Story of Sex, Style, Celebrity, and the Women Who Made America Modern” by Joshua Zeitz. I heard about flappers as good time girls before reading that book. However, from reading the book, I didn’t realize flappers had a huge cultural impact on American history. I learned that among the many ways flappers liberated women, they were the ones who did away with the constrictive corsets. There’s also a section in there on Coco Chanel, who had such a huge impact on flapper fashion and women’s fashion in general; she created the Little Black Dress.

Of course, the Jazz Age couldn’t have been the Jazz Age without F. Scott Fitzgerald, author of “The Great Gatsby.” Zeitz covers Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda throughout the book. Even Zelda was a cultural impact on the Jazz Age: she too was a flapper. Now “The Great Gastby” is included in my forever growing list of books I want to read.

No that is not a typo. I was looking to see how people got here, what kind of searches they did that led them here and I found “save the boops” It was too funny to keep to myself. Is there a national funding program to save these wild boops. Of course I am assuming they are wild because I don’t think you can domesticate a boop, can you? I managed to find this rare photo of one.

Well enough kidding around. It is October and that means it is Breast Cancer awareness month. I know this is something women try to avoid……but you can’t. I can not stress enough the importance of self-examination and mammograms in early detection and that is the key to survival. Set the example for your daughters. Teach them as they grow up that this is something all women must do for good health.

My Story:

I was watching TV one night. I don’t remember what but I do remember it was on a Friday evening. I felt an itch on my chest just underneath my bra. As I was home alone I had no problem scratching it. And there it was……a lump the size of a pea. Time literally stopped. I’m not even sure I kept breathing. For those few moments I was so stunned I couldn’t move. But it was there no matter how many times I touched it, it didn’t go away, I didn’t imagine it. The world started turning again. I took a deep shuddering breath and I cried. I couldn’t help it. The tears just flowed. I knew I needed to see the doctor but the offices were closed until Monday. This would be one of the longest weekends of my life. Monday came and what I had felt was so urgent was treated like no big deal. Their first available appointment was in a 2 weeks. Two weeks! no way, I am not waiting 2 weeks to find out if I have cancer. Well after much bickering, whining, pleading, they agreed to see me that Friday. By the time Friday rolled around I felt like I hadn’t slept and thought I was getting an ulcer from the stress. The doctor examined me and agreed……it was a lump! She also managed to insult me by complaining about it being hard to feel (it was only the size of a boulder) because my breast are large and fibrous. I didn’t ask for a boob critique. WTF. She referred me for a fine needle biopsy. This is where they remove some fluid from the lump with a needle to test it to see if it is cancerous. I had to wait another long and grueling week for the test.

Fast forward 1 week: I was sitting in the exam room waiting for the test feeling terrified and barely keeping it together. I was alone because they wouldn’t let my husband wait with me. I heard the doctor outside the door yelling at the nurses. There was something about my appointment he didn’t like. It seemed as though he thought it was beneath him and should have been given to a less important doctor. Did I mention this was Kaiser? He entered the room and told me to lay down and asked me to point out the lump. When I did he stuck a needle in it and then removed it very quickly and started swearing. I kept asking him what was wrong but he ignored me and threw away the needle, then left the room. The nurse came in and said it was a cyst because the lump had collapsed when the needle penetrated it. There would be no test because he, “THE DOCTOR” had said it wasn’t necessary. I panicked. I needed the test. I had to know. So they did a mammogram and found some calcification in the area of the lump. I was told this might indicate cancer but that “we” would watch it and see how it was in 6 months. “No” I said “that won’t do” I started up the chain of hospital command and so did my husband. Phone call after phone call. I was scared but now I was also angry. I ended up having a stereo-tactic biopsy later that week. It is less invasive and leaves only a tiny scar. The technicians doing the test were great. They made me laugh and seemed to genuinely care about me. They also worked really hard to get the test right and make it work, the lump was up by the chest wall and it is hard to reach in this procedure. They were my angels. Just a side note here. After the test you have an incision so they put a bag of ice in your bra to help with the swelling. You leave the office with 1 humongous boob and one regular size one and boy let me tell you heads will whip around to stare. I thought some people might get whiplash from the double takes. For the first time in my life I didn’t mind the stares. It was funny and I was just glad to be alive that day. I don’t have cancer but I do have a mammogram every year and I do self exams once a week. That was 17 years ago and I was 37. Today things are handled better. They understand what your feeling and your need to know right away. So don’t be afraid, just do it.

You may have noticed my pink background. I am not usually into pink but all this week I will be using pink backgrounds to remind you to get your mammogram and to “save the boops”
