Chris Gorham ha twitteado hace unos días que está de regreso en el set de Ugly Betty y que “el bebé de Ana Ortiz es bellisimo.”

Esto hace que nos preocupemos.

No a causa del bebé, pero algunas fuentes han estado anunciando sobre el destino de Betty: que el final puede estar cerca y los fantasmas(pretendientes) de Betty podrían estar de vuelta.

A pesar de Gorham se ha aclarado a través de Twitter, “no estoy de vuelta en Ugly Betty. “Solo visito a mis  amigos(actores) de ugly betty”, según las fuentes, puede ser muy pronto …

Varias Fuentes dicen que ABC ha estado trabajando arduamente en todas las  formas para tratar de salvar Ugly Betty (se incluiye la posibilidad de moverlo  de los viernes a  los miércoles), sin embargo, si el rating no mejora de aqui a unos meses, es posible que Betty se cancele en mayo. I have a real reason to write today.
The reason is simple though.
Ugly Betty is Back! I’m so very excited. It’s office time , so I couldn’t watch the whole episode, nor can I write a lot. But all I want to write is my first reaction to watching 10 mins of Ugly Betty Season 4 premiere.

Betty dreams of having her braces removed. That’s an up, I mean all this while it seemed like Betty La Fea was kept away from this American version and new areas are being explored. Although this is true, but we should not forget that the story is about Betty’s transformation into a swan.

Betty’s bangs have grown. (See screenshot up) That’s cute. She seems to have some highlights too. Looks good on her.

Justin is going to high school. He looks all grown up and so …. nice. Seriously, I love his character. He is infact one of the reasons why Im not averse to homosexualism and gay people like many people I know.

Hilda and Ignacio are the same. I so love them for providing stability to the show. Hilda looked really amazing in those pink shorts!

Fashion TV reporter. I don’t remember his name now, but I think his real name is Alex. His hair looked different … and so like he should be like! Awesome!!

Willy Slater is hiding something/one in her house. What is it? I am dying of curiosity here. It was because of this that I watched the 10 minutes. But … what are you hiding Willy?

Marc is asking the same question as I am. I hope we get the answer soon. Btw, where is his best friend Amanda? Didn’t see her!

Nor did I see Daniel. What is he doing in Tibet btw? When is he coming back?

And Matt. Oh I think I’m gonna like him in his sarcastic and mean and rude self. Obviously it’s different from what we’ve seen him the past year and I am supposed to hate him, but I’m not sure. He has changed his looks too. He looks fresh and more like a wounded lover. I’m so gonna love him or love to hate him this year.

And I’m sooo looking forward to many more hours of Ugly Betty this year. May it go on and on and on!!

I just finished watching Ugly Betty season 3, episode 4 and I’m waiting for episode 5 to load properly so I decided to share what I just learned from Betty Suarez.

She’s right. That statement from her above is so true. We always want something. That’s human nature. It’s not bad. It only makes us strive even harder to get that something. It makes us stronger, it makes us more determined. We learn to fight, we learn to wait, to hope. All these good things it can bring to us.

But bad things it can bring to other people? Along the way of working so hard just to get that thing that we desire the most, some people are hurt. Maybe we know that, but we just tend to, intentionally or not, not care.

Like when loving someone so much. When you lose someone you really love, you do everything just to make him/her come back. You do all the crazy and evil stuff you didn’t even think you could actually do. You just do EVERYTHING. Unknowingly (or knowingly), there are people that are hurt with your desire to be happy. Of course it’s not bad to fight for your happiness. But how about fairness?

I’ve been so much hurt because some people are happy with what and who they have. And I have hurt people because I also wanted to be happy, to stop the hurting. I was really selfish. I’m sure we all are at some point. But at the end of the day, it’s always best to do what’s right. It will surely hurt you for a while. But after sometime, you’ll realize that it’s such a relief to let go of everything that’s been hurting you and other people. Maybe it wasn’t just really for you. Maybe it was not just your REAL happiness. You just thought that it was.

Somewhere along your way, you’ll find what really makes you happy. And if this really makes you happy, you’ll enjoy every single pain that it will bring you. Remember life’s not all about laughter. It’s a package–pain and sorrow come with it.

Ugly Betty came out at just the right time. The Devil Wears Prada had just hit theaters (and the movie, unlike the book, had an actual storyline, garnering it a lot of fanfare) and with America’s Next Top Model and Project Runway also a big deal, fashion was at center stage.

Ugly Betty is by no means a unique story, since it is almost the exact duplicate of the movie, at least in regards to the main character Betty Suarez’s storyline. Of course, they expand the story by adding in the family drama of the Meade family–the mother charged with murder, the long lost brother who has had a sex change, a vindictive Wilhemina always plotting to steal playboy Daniel’s position, Betty’s immigrant family (well, her father) and their various troubles, Christina’s husband’s illness, etc. The show keeps coming up with new twists and turns that are sometimes unexpected and other times just plain unlikely. And yet I can’t help but keep watching. (But this isn’t a review about the show itself, which I will write at some point, so I’m not going to go on…)

What are they scheming now?

One of my favorite parts of the show is Mark and Mandy. They’re just ridiculous and awesome. So think of how pleased I was to find minisodes centering around those two characters. I don’t know how long it’s been online, but it must have been a while since there were six episodes up on the ABC website. Now, maybe it was 4:30 am, but I could not stop laughing. If you’re looking for a way to kill five minutes here and there or you need an Ugly Betty fix before the season returns, check it out. You won’t be sorry.

The entire concept of minisodes has burst onto the internet in the last few years. It is one of many gimmicks companies have employed to get viewers more invested in the show. It’s also a nice way to let us get more of characters that are a lot of fun but often get ignored during the show.

Episode Title: Mother of a Problem

Betty invites Matt over to their house for breakfast.  Did he stay the night?  Nurse Naughty did.  Betty says she has to meet Daniel at the office on a Saturday.  Betty and Matt are going to a Rangers game.  Matt is going for work, and Betty owes him.  Matt says there’s  a lot of boobs in Mode.  Hilda says moms love Betty.  Matt says his mom is dying to meet Betty.  Justin asks Matt how rich IS he. The councilman (Archie) is Hilda’s new client.  NurseNaughty and Betty tells Hilda he’s cute and he likes her.  She’s not interested.

Daniel says that Molly is crazy that she doesn’t think Derek Jeter is a good looking guy.  She hates that he has to go to work on a Saturday.  Oooh, Betty is wearing pants, she loks bad in them.  She’s a skirt girl.  Her shoes are nice though.  Not for a Rangers game though.  Willy looks great as usual.  Her and Daniel are a real team now.  They really know each other well.  She knows about his upper lip sweat when he gets nervous.  He says its water.  He washed his face! They’re having trouble paying photographers.  The photographer says he can go down to Vanity Fair if they can’t pay.  Daniel says it’ll have to come out of their pockets, and he can cover this.  Willy says they can split it.  She has this, no problem.  She looks conflicted.

Betty shows up at Matt’s apartment building.  Matt’s mother shows up, Betty says she’s Betty.  She thinks Betty is the “help.”  Then Betty tells her she’s dating Matt.  She’s liek “oh, really.” through gritted teeth.  Matt shows up and introduces them.  Silence.  Matt’s mom is played by the wonderful Christine Baranski!  Love her!  I wonder heard about this role from Judith Light’s “Sitcom-stars-of-the-90’s” Book Club?  Haha.

Betty freaks at Matt that his mom thought she was the maid!  Matt says he was hiding her from Betty!  Betty says moms love her.  Matt just didn’t want to put her through the Victoria Hartley (his mom) taste test.  Betty says she has to go through it, it matters if his mom likes her.  Betty wants to see his mom again.  His mom is having a party on Friday night, Matt invites her.  Betty’s really happy about it.  Matt tells her she’s the best!

Willy is selling her posessions.  Marc asks her if that isn’t one rung up from starring in her own reality show.  Haha.  He has the best lines. Marc asks her why she just can’t ask one of her rich friends.  Willy says she doens’t want to owe those people, her company, her money.  Marc cries when she finalizes the deal for selling her things.  She tells him he can try on the sable one last time.  He stops crying.

Amanda wants to know about the party that Betty is going to on Friday.  Amanda tells her that a few more moves, and she’s in gold-digger hall of fame.  Betty denies being a gold digger.  Well, she’s not!  Willy tells someone she’s having afternoon caviar and champage.  Marc brings in almonds.  She asks Marc what it is.  He says they can’t afford her stuff in their new budget, and reminds her she wanted to make sacrifices.  Marc tries to choke back an almond.  Well, at least Willy can lose weight by not eating? She should be happy.

Daniel and Molly are talking to a doctor, and he tells her there’s only a small chance his treatments will work, but there is a chance, but it’s small.  Daniel tells them they’re in.  Molly wants time to think about it. Mrs. Meade talks to Betty about the fancy party for this Friday.  She asks what the topic is.  Betty says she doesn’t know what the topic is.  She tells Betty to call the house and ask one of the maids what the topic is.  Mrs. Meade talks to “Consuela.”  She puts Betty on to talk in Spanish to the maid.  The maid tells her the topic is torture.  Claire Meade tells her that’s obvious!  Why do we get the feeling there’s a broken-telephone situation here?

Marc tells Willy that he heard that Willy has been selling off her clothes willy nilly.  And that Willy has been eating nuts and soda water.   It’s on the fashion news.  They’re mocking Willy.  Marc says she has no idea how it got out, he swears he didn’t tell anyone.  Marc says there’s a mole somewhere, and he’ll find it.  Willy tells him to cancel her calls and meetings, she’s done for the day.  She’s pissed.

Betty is going over the topic of “torture.”  Justin winces her into a tight outfit, and tells her torture is necessary for this outfit.  NurseNaughty and Papi invited the Councellor Archie over.  OMG! It’s Ralph Macchio.  (V: “…Wait a minute…isn’t that The Karate Kid!) He’s not that good looking, but alright.  Kinda a better looking version of Marc Anthony.  The singer, not the historical figure.

Marc goes to Willy’s apartment with the auction house people for the pick-up.  He searches her place for her, opens her bedroom door and finds her lying in furs and diamonds holding onto them.   Provocative.

Hilda is not happy about being setup on this little dinner date.  Ignacio is cooking.  Archie says he eats Chinese Takeout in his kitchen.  Papi and NurseNaughty are really pouring it on!  Justin passes Hilda a glass of red wine and says “Mom, here’s your medication.”  Haha.  I need some meds right about now. Betty’s outfit is crazy, but I actualy really like it.  Its quiet fashionable loking.  Matt tells her she looks beautiful.  Victoria jokes that she won’t ask Betty to bring up her bags tonight! Haha.  One of the rich guys comes up to Matt, and Matt tells Betty he has an S&M Dungeon in the bottom of his house.  Haha!  Victoria announces dinner is served.  She is going to announce a piece of art in the collection in her living room that will be featured in the Louvre.  There’s some kind of wrapper or food on it, and everyone gasps in horror!  Betty looks guilty!  What happened?  Did I miss something?

Victoria asks what an appetizer is doing on her painting.  Betty says something, but Matt interjects and blames himself for it.  Victoria says if the artist were alive, he’d get a good laugh, but he’s dead, which is why it’s so VALUABLE!  How did that happen?  Victoria mutters to Betty it’s not like Matt to do something like that, she guesses she brings out his “playful” side.

Marc and Willy lie in her furs, she said she can’t oart with them, but she needs the money.  Marc takes pictures of her on his cell phone and says he hates seeing her like this.  Marc says it kills him too, he hates living without HER luxuries.  Willy says she came from nothing and accomplished something.  Marc reminds her her father was a senator.  The auction house woman is there, she tells Marc to take it all.  She is in her undies and asks Marc if he likes what he sees.  He says yes!  And she says “well, get used to it, cause Mama is downsizing!”  And Marc is like “but not where it COUNTS!”  Haha!

Molly reminds Daniel she’s dying and that treatments probably won’t work.  That RIGHT NOW is their future.  Daniel says he’ll be right by her side through all of this.  Molly says she knows how she wants to live the rest of her life and its not like this.  Its a hard decision to make.

So Archie is telling tales about his job, and Hilda looks really bored, but everyone else finds it interesting.  Ignacio tells him he hopes they can make the meal a habit.  Hilda says sure, she wishes he could come all the time.  Sarcastically.  I think he’s onto it.

Matt is sitting separate from Betty, cause Victoria says she placed the name cards a long time ago.  Wow.

Archie asks Hilda how awkward this is for her when they’re together alone.  Hilda apologizes.  Archie says it happens all the time.  Archie says he’s a catch.  Archie tells her her eyes have a story to tell and he has his whole life.  Hilda recognizes that’s a Justin Timberlake song.  He jokes that she’s glad she recognized it, or that would have been lame!  haha.  Yeah….

Victoria  is talking whilst Matt and Betty are texting.  The topic is NOT torture, it’s “The Future of Opera.”  Victoria asks Betty if she can start off.  Victoria puts her on the spot.  Betty looks terrified!  Here’s a suggestion, if you don’t know anything about Opera and don’t like it…then maybe your opinion should be that there IS NO future for Opera, in your opinon.  Hahaha.  Who deigns a topic of discussion at a dinner party?  Is this a board game?  Do these people not have enough to say?

Betty says her experience with Opera is not so vast, so her opinion is not well formed.  Matt texts her about some Mode photoshoot about Opera.  Betty says Opera is like fashion, and art.  She gives a really good answer.  The guests say its the most succinct and insightful piece of criticism that he’s ever heard.  She tells people she works at Mode.  One of them says they love Mode.  Betty compares Opera to Couture.  Nice save Matt!

Councilman leaves.  NurseNaughty and Papi leave so that Archie can say goodbye to Hilda specifically.  Hilda says subtlety doesn’t run in their genes.  He says this is where he’s supposed to ask her out.  He says he’d love to take her out on a date.  He tells Papi that he asked her out and she said yes.

Willy and Daniel get that photographer that they wanted.  Wily says she did what she wanted.  Daniel tells her that he’s not trying to muscle her out, that life is short.  Willy makes fun of him for being philosophical.

Back at the Party…Victoria comes up to Betty and asks Betty where she went to college.  She asks Betty if she was the first person to go, Betty says yes.  Victoria tells her she’s ambitious.  She tells her that Matthew went to Yale and speaks 3 languages, and also plays piano.  She asks Betty what her and Matt have in common.  Betty says loads.  Victoria tells her she has high hopes for her son and she expects him to take advantage of all of his oppotunities.  Victoria tells her that she hopes she enjoyed her meal, but they don’t think the’ll be seeing her again.  Wow.  Poor Betty!

Betty searches for her coat to leave.  Matt asks her if she’s cold.  Betty tells him what her mother says.  Betty asks him what if it’s right.  Betty says it’s too much for her.  He says he wants both of them, he wants this relationship to have a future.  Matt tells his mom he’s not saying goodbye to her, but Betty and him are leaving.  He says goodnight mother, he’s leaving with his girlfriend.  WOW! Way to stand up to your mother!  I’m shocked.  I thought he’d willy out a bit.

Marc rolls into Willy’s office with her lunch, its almonds and soda water again.  Marc asks if he’s okay.  Willy says she’ll kill Marc and eat him if he took a picture.  Willy says that daniel helped her.  Marc says “Really, Boy Blunder?”  And Willy says she’s going to be like Molly and she’s going to live her life until she dies!  She pulls away some champagne and caviar.

Daniel tells Betty about Molly.  Daniel says he’s done everything right, and for the first time he’s really in love and does not want to lose her.  Betty tells him that Molly’s just trying to give him the time she DOES have left.  Betty says sometimes you can’t have more, you just have to take what you can get.

Betty talks to Claire Meade.  Betty tells her how it went down.  Claire tells Betty she’s never going to win that woman over.  Claire tells her to grow up cause not everyone is going to like her.  Claire tells her she can throw it back at her!

Daniel comes in and grabs a snowball out the window, and throws it at her in the gayest throw I’ve ever seen.  Daniel says they will just do whatever she wants, just live life to the fullest.  Daniel tells her he wants to go play in the snow.

Betty calls Matt and tells her that she’s here.  Mrs. Hartley meets her at the bottom of the building.  She tells Betty that Matt’s moving back to his old apartment.  VIctoria says she won’t change herself, and Betty says neither will she.  Betty says she might be around for a while.  Result!

Dana Scully – A doctor, detective, a red haired bombshell, and a hell of a shot too.  A Standford Medical graduate with a Bachelors in Physics from University of Maryland, Scully is best known for her physical labors like escaping alien abductions and chasing Mulder across crop circles it’s easy to forget that Scully is a Professor as well.  Dana is the kind of geek who blends in with the crowd; you won’t find her sporting glasses unless she’s using them to study or preforming an autopsy.  She’s a football fan and a tomboy, yet she can name off every bone in the human body, while shooting you in each one.  A hardcore skeptic she believes that science will provide all the answers she needs.  Even her own Catholic faith isn’t safe from her scrutiny.  Don’t go thinking she’s stodgy though; an impulsive night of drinking resulted in a tatoo on the small of her back that she is secretly proud of.  A deadly agent with the patience of a saint, Dana Scully redefines the FBI: Fire, Beauty, Intellect.

Penelope Garcia – One of the FBI’S top Technical analysist assigned to the Behavior Analysis Unit is also one of the cutest, girliest, geekiest geeks you’ll ever see! (And as you can probably tell, a personal favorite of mine.)  Garcia is a techno-prodigy, loves MMORPGS, hacking/cracking, and collecting esoteric toys and figurines.  Garcia sees more horrible things than most of us can see in a life time of nightmares at her job  and as a countermeasure she fills her office with anime and game figures, ties pom-poms to her pens and is rarely found without colourful hair ornaments.  Don’t let all the sunshine fool you though, Penelope’s wit is her best weapon and she’s not afraid to use it.

Abigail “Abby” Sciuto – Goth geeks are always underrepresented in the media, but Abby is out to change that.  In fact, she’s out to change the world, one mega size Caf-Pow drink at a time.  This dark haired beauty spends her days in the lab being so brilliant the military lets her wear her spikes and pig-tails to work.  After a hard day cracking cases she sleeps in a coffin, that is, after she’s finished playing WoW and other video games.  She also bowls a mean game with her friends (a group of nuns) and enjoys hacking/cracking in her spare time with her friend (or maybe more) Magee.  Don’t let her dark appearnce fool you though: she’s just a sweet kid with a nervous disposition.  Or maybe it’s all the caffeine…

Temperance Brennan – Another doctor/professor cross makes our list with the Forensic Anthropologist from Bones.  Brennan is an intrepid crime solver and best selling author, but a social reject.  Not shy at all, she often espouses knowledge at her colleges at an alarming rate.  Full of facts, and possessing a sharp eye she is one of the greatest mind of her field.  Her sincerity and naivete often seem like flirting and get her into situations her intellect can’t get her out of.  Her socially awkward and blunt manner scare away men, but Brennan doesn’t seem to mind.  All mistakes are just opportunities to learn after all.  I suspect she has a shelf full of relationship reference material in her apartment (as well as a few romance novels), for research purposes of course.

Calleigh Duquesne – Blond hair, blue eyes and an eternally sunny disposition aren’t normally associated with geeks, but Calleigh isn’t your normal geek.  Holding a bachelors degree in Physics, this Southern bell is just as smart as any of her fellow CSI’s but her expertise in guns is where her true nerd colors show through.  Dusquesne got the nick name Bullet Girl while working in New Orleans and wears the name proudly in her new Miami home.  Her love of guns makes her a very rare kind of fan girl and a living “Gun Bunny”, something that has caught the eye of many male co-workers.  A little niave when it comes to the smooth ways of Miami men she still holds on to some Southern values, often blushing when a handsome fellow holds a door for her.  Strong and fearless Calleigh is the stuff many geek dreams are made of, and that’s just fine by her.

Betty Suarez – Socially awkward, and terrible dresser this braces clad cuttie spends her days working at a high end Fashion Magazine.  Betty came in second in her graduating class at Queens borough High School, was the editor of the Yearbook, and member of the Music Society (playing cymbals and triangles) among other classically geeky pursuits.  Repeating this pattern in college Betty graduated Cum Laude, proving intelligence can take you farther than looks.  Well known for being positive and solving any problem, Betty has become indispensable to her friends and is becoming a valued member of Mode magazine.  Clumsy and scatterbrained most of the time Betty can pull it all together in a pinch and win the day, or even, the heart of her latest crush.

Okay. Sebenarnya nak tulis tentang perkara lain. Tetapi memandangkan saya masih di dalam mood hanjingan, saya lebih senang memilih untuk maki hamun.

Dahulu, saya jarang tonton tv. Bukan sebab apa, rasa nya semua benda boleh kita jumpa dan layari di internet. Tambahan pula tayangan siri tv yang dari Amerika di sini agak terbelakang sekali. Lembap. Ij kata susah nak ada perubahan di Malaysia. Syarikat-syarikat besar macam ASTRO tiada saingan, maka tidak perlu lah mereka bersusah payah untuk memperbaiki produk dan servis.

Walau bagaimanapun, semenjak saya berhenti kerja tempoh hari, kehidupan saya sangat lah vosan. Saya pun mula menonton siri tv dari Amerika versi lanun Somalia.

Di antara sepuluh ribu karakter-karakter siri tv, mungkin kah ada yang anda terasa seperti ingin sepak atau terajang? Saya ada! Saya ada!

1. Betty Suarez

Masa di universiti, kami sanggup ponteng kelas semata-mata kerana tidak mahu terlepas tonton rancangan Yo Soy Betty La Fea. Best okay. Agak gembira saya apabila rancangan itu telah diAmerikakan. Pelakon utama pun namanya Amerika.

Saya tak nafikan America Ferrera sangat hebat. Cuma saya fikir adalah tidak logik untuk karakter Betty yang mempunyai kompleks ketidakselamatan (insecurity) boleh bertukar menjadi Gandalf / ahli sihir yang bijak pandai lalu sentiasa memberikan idea-idea yang kononnya sangat bernas kepada boss nya Daniel yang hampas berderai itu.

Paling hansuang ialah episod di mana Betty mencadangkan kepada boss nya untuk menganjurkan pertunjukan fesyen menggunakan model-model yang ’sihat’. I mean, come on. People avoid carbs for a reason, and that isn’t at all fun. If all they do is work the runway, that would be shit easy lah kan. Models do work hard to look fab beb. Tiba-tiba kau yang tak pernah peduli tentang imej nak semak-semak kenapa?

Helena Rubenstein pernah berkata – “There are no ugly women, just lazy ones.”

Heidi Klum jika tak disolek dan tak berusaha bermatian untuk kurangkan berat badan selepas melahirkan anak, akan tetap kelihatan seperti tapir.

Malas. Bila malas, kita tak patut dapat ganjaran. Atau pujian.

Begitu lah juga Betty. Beliau malas nak jaga rupa. Tak pernah kisah tentang refleksi diri dan kesan kepada majikan. Walaupun bekerja dengan majalah fesyen, tidak pernah dia peduli tentang fesyen.

Patut kah beliau berbangga dengan sikap beliau?

Nasib baik karakter-karakter lain dalam siri Ugly Betty sangat menghiburkan. Saya suka. Saya cinta kepada Marc dan Mandy. Saya juga sayang kepada Hilda dan Justin Suarez. Tidakkah anda rasa Ana Ortiz patut menang anugerah Emmy? Kelakar weh dia ni.

Probably the series/episode I was most looking forward to this week, and probably next week too besides Gundam 00 Episode 2. So after Christina was pushed down the stairs Betty conducts her own investigation to find out the culprit.

I really like Wilhemina’s (played by Vanessa Williams) long and straight hairstyle this episode. If it’s not Amanda and Marc scenes in each episode, it’s usually Wilhemina’s on-screen appearances that I’m looking forward to seeing every episode.

Oh well, this might be the last appearance of Rebecca Romijn as Alexis Meade for a while. I doubt it’s the last though since the actor portraying the Detective is being billed as a recurring character.

I forgot how much I love, love, love Ugly Betty.  Now being filmed in NYC as opposed to a Hollywood set pretending to be NYC (ready why HERE in LA Times) and no longer plagued by long breaks as we did last season as the result of the writer’s strike, it’s time to fall in love with one of the best shows on television all over again.

We were all on the edge of our seats during the season finale when Betty was left to choose between Henry or Gio.  I was thinking she’d choose Gio for probably the same superficial rationale that I figured J. Lo eventually landed with Marc Anthony and not Diddy (it’s just comedy, y’all).  Let’s put it this way, we were all wrong, but the result was right for Betty.  Betty seems to be trying to live for herself, a common thread in our culture now, letting her dreams and passions be her guide.  Not to mention echoing a sentiment of women’s lib with her dove as her spirit animal..or was it power animal?…whatever…and a shout out to the lesbians in her tale about Peg.

And who hasn’t made a list like this?

1. “I am going to take on more responsibilities at work so that in one year I get a promotion”
2. “I am not going to let any romantic entanglements get in my way.”
3. “I’m getting my own apartment in the city.”

Oh, Betty, you and your idea book reminded me of LalaTamago and that spirit of the world is yours to conquer that I used to take in with every breath but instead has me left jaded but hopeful (or is it hopeful but jaded??) as the haters and naysayers of the real world have marred my spirit.  Keep hope alive for us Betty!  Yes we can! 

I digress…

Of course, life at Mode has definitely flipped the script on this show.  I’m wondering how long they’ll play this out because it’s just ridiculous…like too ridiculous for even this show.  Willhimena running things at Mode with heiress baby on the way via Christina.  Daniel has that stupid Player magazine and a staff that’s as ridiculous as the mag.  Not to mention his fake French speaking son that appeared from nowhere last season.  Daniel, a father?  Plausible that he sperminated, but not so much on the daddy figure.

Team Amanda and Marc are back to their old antics reminiscent of Karen and Jack from Will and Grace.  Betty’s arrival at work was HI to the LARIOUS thanks to them.

Christiane Amanpour: Christiane is a reknowned and accomplished news reporter. Her take on reporting has gained her some of the most prestigious awards in journalism, including 9 Emmys.  She’s extremely insightful and talented, and well, I’d like to follow her around the world and learn a thing or two.

Barbara Walters: Now here is a woman who really fought the old school attitudes, who started out on “The Today Show” as a researcher and writer.  She has a knack for getting people to tell their stories and she’s an interesting and seemingly approachable character.  I admire her gift in drawing out people’s stories,

 

 

Indira Gandhi: Irrespective of your political views, you have to hand it to Indira.  She served unofficially as a personal assistant to her father Jawaharlal Nehru, who had a prominent role in India’s Independence movement. Imagine that for experience! 

  

Kate Hutchison:  I have seen Kate in action.  She’s is hands down, a very smart marketing executive – having served as SVP of Marketing at both BEA and Citrix . VMWare has been lucky enough to snatch Kate up as SVP of Worldwide Corporate Communications.  Not only is she smart, she’s approachable and encouraging –and a working mom! We need more Kate’s in the high tech world to serve as a source of inspiration in a male dominated industry! Kate, thanks for the inspiration!

 

Betty Suarez: I know this is a bit odd, to call out a fictional character as someone to look up to. But I honestly love Betty Suarez – the confident, intelligent and hardworking personal assistant to the editor-in- chief of Mode Magazine.  It’s refreshing to see her in action. She is not what the main stream considers the attractive, she’s wardrobe challenged – but has so much more going for her. She is very  intelligent and possesses a high emotional IQ. Betty is a breath of fresh air compared to the superficial, devious types who run around Mode Magazine trying to make their mark.

I’ve been pretty busy with work over the past several weeks, so I haven’t gone around posting any film reviews lately.  Nevertheless, all that I can say that “Don’t Mess with the Zohan” and “Wall-E” are well worth seeing, the former with Adam Sandler in his broadest since “Little Nicky” (in another bulletin-board post, I compared “…Zohan” to an FPJ movie on nitrous oxide and a fistfull of Ecstasy pills).

As usual, Rob Schneider is there to gratituously make an ass out of himself…a Mariah Carey cameo is well woven amidst the ribald, manic action, and even Our Very Own™ Alec Mapa gets some scenes with A-Sand (c’mon, give him more roles…maybe the Long Duk Dong character in a possible Sixteen Candles remake)

Wall-E awed me not only for its gloriously bleak visuals but also for eschewing quite a number of Disney-Pixar conventions.  Instead of having recognizable names lend their voices to characters, we have a striking anti-consumerist, anti-monopolist parable which surprisingly entertains instead of bores.  There are lessons learned, but the good folks at Pixar do not hammer it down our heads.

Love the sly humor bits there…particularly the video clips of the Buy’N Large CEO (voiced by Fred Willard) which have a politically subversive quality to it (give added props to Pixar for sheer ballsiness)

Same same rules apply…orange for local releases, italics for must-sees.

Reminder (09/07): Disaster Movie has not yet hit local theatres.  There is still hope.

You got to hand it to whoever slotted “For the First Time” for the last weekend of August….as much as you may be won over by KC Concepcion’s winning smile, you still resist being sucked into the usual mix of romantic cliche and blatant product placement that is the standard fare these days in mainstream Pinoy films. Maybe Annabelle Rama must have had a hand to make sure that no significant Hollywood release gets in the way of his (talent-deficient) son’s starring vehicle-cum- Grecian travelogue, so we get to choose between these pair of dogs.

Babylon A.D. – geddit, B.A.D. – I guess French director Matthieu Kassovitz must’ve got one heckuva premonition from the film’s title. I feel bad that Vin Diesel’s return to the action genre would wind up like something most likely to carry an “Alan Smithee” credit when it eventually winds up on DVD and Blu-Ray (which may not be long)

Do I smell a Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines ripoff around 1:40

…not to mention XXX somewhere round the middle.

Unsolicited advice for new dad Vin…how about directing your own shit next time. You do show promise as a film director, having worked behind the camera alongside no less than Spielberg, so maybe you can whip up something really deserving of your prodigious talent.

As for Disaster Movie (how appropriate!!!), I’m just appalled at how the “directors” (aka “Two of the Six Writers behind Scary Movie™”) can get away the second time around (this year!!!) with this?? In my effort to arrest the further decline of Hollywood comedy – particularly the spoof movie – in the hands of YouTube-spoiled hacks like them, I hereby present the TV spots!!!!

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army

Yay…at long last!!  I just hope it’s worth the wait…and that local fanboys get to see Big Red whup some Ctulthu ass on the big screen!!!  Never mind that it had to play best man opposite Batman’s groom in the summer b.o., but the trailers still make the film look too good to resist.

Add to that, I’m just a sucker for a freak with a self-deprecating sense of humour…let’s see grumpy Bruce or perennially-pickled Tony pull that off!!

Anyway, if smart-ass superheroes aren’t your cup of tea, there’s Righteous Kill…teaming up Oscar faves Bob & Al once again (since their star turns in Heat)!

The supporting cast in this gritty crime thriller includes Curtis “Don’t call me 50 Cent or Fiddy” Jackson and New Kid (once again!) Donnie Wahlberg.  I can imagine kid brother Mark pipping him, “Donnie D’s on the back-up, I’m drug-free, so put the crack up!!!”…then again, he’ll be doing his own tour of the mean streets in about a month with “Max Payne”.

It’s been quite sometime since Taken (which sounds like some alien-abduction thingie) was released worldwide…kinda baffles me why we get it quite late (my brother scored a Korean-subtitled DVD rip) – but it seems quite a serviceable kidnap thriller teaming up Liam Neeson and Famke Janssen.

Meanwhile, from France we go to Bangkok, Thailand where Nicolas Cage top-bills the Pang brothers’ remake of their own 2000 masterwork.

Now, here’s the Nic Cage-d version:

IMHO…think Shoot ‘Em Up meets Ong-Bak.  With baaaaad hair.

Makes me wanna think…didn’t the Philippine film industry used to turn out action flicks?  What had happened to the days when there were vengeful cops pushed to the limit and blessed with a seemingly limitless supply of ammo?  What has also happened to the days when Robin Padilla would put his lanky-faced smirk onto his portrayal of good-intentioned lawbreakers?  Now all we got are excessively intolerable excuses for cutesiness such as For the First Time and this:

No thanks to those damned Koreanovelas…no offense though, I’d like to set a copy of Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, strap Jolina Magdangal to a chair and let her see the film in its unedited entirety.  It’s high time we churn out bad-ass Pinoy flicks rather than these brain-dead candyfloss love stories.

Finta brutta, appositamente selezionata per ingannare il vostro occhio.

Sì, parlo proprio di “Ugly Betty”, il telefilm.
Qualcuno crede veramente che le storie narrate nelle varie puntate di questo popolare telefilm possano essere verosimili? No, non lo sono; per stessa ammissione degli sceneggiatori. La motivazione ufficiale, tradotta sommariamente, sarebbe questa:

La situazione di Betty inserita nell’ambiente di “Mode” non potrebbe sussistere, poichè nella realtà non si verificano con sufficiente continuità gli eventi straordinari che permettono alle sue qualità alternative di manifestarsi.

Perchè scrivi “finta brutta”?

Perchè è la verità.
Sfogliando le pagine di una rivista per gli addetti ai lavori, ho scoperto che le foto dell’attrice protagonista America Ferrera sono tutt’ora “leggermente censurate” da una specie di velo mediatico del silenzio: si tenta di non farla apparire tanto spesso come quanto sarebbe di rito per una piccola celebrità. Questo perchè in realtà America Ferrera non è brutta.

Ebbene sì, come visibile nelle foto in questo articolo (foto rubata) non si può dire che sia la donna più bella del mondo, ma nemmeno che sia brutta. Può non piacere (non è il mio tipo, per es.) però con il trucco “normale” appare più o meno come tutte le altre attrici “truccate normali”. La sua fisicità è tipicamente sudamericana.

E’ leggermente sovrappeso anche e soprattutto perchè il telefilm è ancora attualmente in fase di produzione ( al 04/08/2008 ), per cui non può “uscire dal pesonaggio”.

Se fosse stata realmente brutta…

Ci sarebbe stata la grave possibilità che la serie TV non facesse presa sulla gente, non così a lungo. A mio avviso infatti, persino chi si identifica in lei vuole, deve, poter sperare di non esser poi così brutta. Betty appare “brutta ma non troppo”, “brutta ma non irrecuperabile”: ci sono dei particolari del suo stile di vestire (malissimo), di essere (goffa), fisici applicati (l’apparecchio odontoiatrico per adulti), qualche chilo di troppo… insomma: niente di irrecuperabile.

Una “brutta veramente” avrebbe incuriosito il pubblico per un po’ di tempo, ma non più di tanto, e soprattutto: non a lungo.

Lo pensate senza rendervene conto

…in modo collaterale, inconscio. Per esempio: chi si identifica in Harry o in chi l’apprezza/stima/ama: considerando (anche inconsciamente) la sua finta_bruttezza non si considera un “pervertito”, uno che ama donne che piacerebbero solo agli sfigati (per es.).

Insomma:

Si tratta di un inganno arbitrario partorito dalla mente umana… per ingannare subdolamente …la mente umana: da chi produce il telefilm a chi lo guarda. Bada bene: si tratta di un fattore relativamente innocuo; Non è affatto una novità il fatto (fatto, non diceria) che l’essere umano prediliga “i belli”.

Non venirmi a raccontare storie del tipo “la bellezza non conta”; oppure: “i soldi non sono importanti”.

Perchè, se fosse, risponderei prontamente facendoti presente che, nei concorsi di bellezza, negli show in TV, nelle interviste a donne famose e future star, la risposta più ricorrente alla domanda “Come deve essere il tuo uomo?” è “L’importante è che mi faccia ridere!”.

Traduzione psichica:
“L’importante è che mi faccia ridere/che sia simpatico”  = “Bello e/o Ricco, famoso e che faccia morire d’invidia le mie amiche”.

¿Alguna vez mientras estás todavía acostada en tu cama sonríes imaginando lo bien que vas a lucir en el día? Mientras te estiras para quitarte de encima la pereza decides que hoy tu cabello se va a ver… brillante, con algunas ondas para darle movimiento y lo puedes ver… rebotando lentamente sobre tus hombros mientras caminas por la calle y suelta un delicioso aroma que hace voltear a cada hombre que se te cruza. Decides no ponerte mucho maquillaje porque no te gusta usarlo de diario… Pero hoy vas a ponerte un poquito de rimel en las pestañas para darle un toque coqueto a tu mirada que va a estar escondida detrás de tus lentes de descanso hasta el momento adecuado en el que lentamente y con delicadeza te los vas a sacar para dejar embobados a todos los que te escuchaban hablar.

Mientras te rascas un poco la cabeza y te empiezas a sacar las medias, porque la noche ya pasó y ya NO hace frío, sigues planeando lo regia que vas a estar ese día. Tu pelo perfecto, tu mirada coqueta, tal vez un poco de brillo en los labios para continuar el plan. También decides que vas a usar falda; si, hoy es día de falda porque ya pareces un machito de tanto pantalón que usas y hoy no quieres el look de Coco Chanel ni de Annie Hall. NO! Hoy quieres sentirte… un toque más femenina, tal vez a lo Carolina Herrera, si hablamos de diseñadoras. Si! Vas a ponerte falda y sabes exactamente cual: esa falda floreada de blanco, amarillo y verde oliva que vuela tan lindo en el aire cuando caminas con tus sandalitas delicadas que te regalo tu mamá. A sí, porque hoy tampoco te vas a poner las chancletas de siempre, HOY HE DICHO NO AL NIÑO NIÑA EN MI! Bien me dijo mi amiga: “ser bella cuesta”. No me importa la comodidad, hoy quiero verme linda, perfecta, como de revista o mejor aún como Carrie Bradshawen una cita en pleno día veraniego.

Ay! Un último bostezo antes de que decidas que para cuidar tu esbelta figura, tu cinturita de avispa y tus piernas de barbie latina mejor no comes pan en el desayuno, mejor sólo un juguito… me aguanto el hambre hasta el desayuno. Además, el hambre es bueno, ADELGAZA!

De pronto ves tus manos; si, están bien cuidadas. Toda la semana has tenido la lima en la cartera y las uñas están como deben estar, sólo le falta un toque de brillo y como hoy vas a estar regia una manito de pintura roja. ¿Qué habré hecho con mi reloj? MI RELOJ…Uy! Sólo te queda media hora para arreglarte y salir.

Te levantas animada y convencida de que si puedes hacerlo y para darte una pequeña inspiración te paras delante del espejo. El espejo, ese infaltable amigo, fiel como el solo, a quien no le da miedo hacerte llorar si te dice la verdad.

Por acostarte con el pelo mojado el pobre ha despertado al estilo león enjaulado. Ese buzo de polar con estampado de ositos y el polón que usas para dormir no ayudan a disimular tu figurita de piernas muy cortas, pancita rellena de panes y hombros jorobados. Suspiras con la esperanza de poder lograrlo sólo para descubrir que de tanto soñar en la noche te han salido ojeras y un pequeño puntito rojo asoma en la punta de nariz. Bueno tal vez tenga que usar un POQUITO más de maquillaje de lo que pensé. Te sacas tu pijama y confirmas tus dudas, hace un par de días que no depilas tus piernas de barbie latina… versión Betty Suarez. Uy! Creo que ya no me da el tiempo.

Te amarras el pelo en una cola para disimular el peinado aleonado, te pones tu jean de siempre, tus zapatillas y el polar gris. Corres al baño para lavarte los dientes, la cara y ponerte un poco de crema antigranitos en la punta de tu nariz. Antes de abrir la puerta y salir corriendo le haces caso al rugir de tu panza y coges un pancito de la panera. Después de todo no hay nada mejor que sentirte cómoda a lo largo del día, verdad?

After a grueling spring semester with no new episodes of The Office or Ugly Betty due to a writers’ strike that I only partially understood (although the picture above does a pretty good job of explaining things), it looks like actors may be poised to strike this summer.  Now, I don’t know a whole lot about unions, or strikes in general (except my mom’s own experience with striking nurses a while ago, and all I remember from that is that she was pissed because she didn’t want to strike), but it seems like an actor’s list of grievances would pale in comparison to the grievances of, say, a coal miner. And on top of that, how do they expect people to survive without television? If I can’t hang out with Jim Halpert and Betty Suarez and Eli Stone, what I am I supposed to do? Talk to REAL people? Go outside?? This is the 21st century, people. We need our TV.

At least we have Netflix. Netflix and Blush Chablis.

Dopo il successo ottenuto la scorsa estate con la prima tv della Season 1, Italia 1 si gioca di nuovo la carta Ugly Betty, che torna in onda con la Season 2 dal 02 luglio in prima serata! Il telefilm deve la sua origine a una telenovela Colombiana: Yo soy Betty la Fea (Io sono Betty la brutta), trasmesso per la prima volta in sud America nel 1999 ed esportato in oltre 70 paesi. Per ora sono state realizzate 3 stagioni, ma la terza non è ancora arrivata in Italia.

Il telefilm racconta le vicende quotidiane di Betty Suarez, una giovane ragazza di origini latine che vive nel Queens (quartiere di NY) insieme al padre Ingacio, alla sorella Hilda e a Justin, figlio di Hilda. Nonostante non sia una ragazza attraente, riesce a farsi assumere a Mode, famosa rivista di moda, e diventa l’assistente personale dell’editore capo, Daniel Meade, figlio del proprietario del gruppo editoriale, Bradford Meade. Betty scopre subito che la vita all’interno della redazione è piena di invidie e colpi bassi, orchestrati soprattutto dalla redattrice Wilhelmina Slater, che aspira alla carica di Daniel, ma trova anche due amici sinceri: la stilista di Mode Christina McKinney e il ragioniere Henry.

Ultima puntata: dove eravamo rimasti? I Suarez tornano dal Messico, tranne Ignacio che non ha i documenti in regola; rimanendo in Messico Ignacio è in pericolo: qualcuno venuto dal passato si vuole vendicare di lui. Betty torna a Mode e scopre che Daniel si droga per combattere la dipendenza dal sesso, Wilhelmina ha incastrato Bradford e sta per sposarlo, ma la moglie di lui, Claire (in prigione per l’omicidio dell’ex amante del marito) sta organizzando una fuga per vendicarsi di Wilhelmina; anche Hilda sta preparando il matrimonio con Santos, padre di Justin. Betty e Henry si dichiarano il proprio amore ma l’ex di lui, Claire, dice di essere incinta del figlio di Henry, così lui decide di dire addio a Betty per assistere Claire. Betty scopre però che Claire si sta frequentando anche con un dentista e che quindi il figlio potrebbe non essere di Henry. Nel frattempo, a Mode: Amanda e Christine rimangono chiuse dentro la stanza segreta di Fey Sommers, dove scoprono che Amanda è figlia di Fey; Alexis, la sorella di Daniel, scopre che lui si droga e lo porta in ospedale, ma la loro macchina si schianta contro un albero. Alla fine della puntata, Santos viene colpito da un proiettile durante una rapina in un negozio e l’episodio si chiude con Betty che corre dalla sorella (che sta assistendo alla recita scolastica di Justin) per avvisarla.

• Il grosso pendente a forma di “B” di Betty è lo stesso di Anna Bolena nella serie The Tudors e nel film L’altra donna del re.
• Il cantante Mika è un estimatore della serie e per il promo della Season 2 ha registrato nuovamente il suo brano Big Girl (You Are Beautiful) cambiando il testo in “Hey Betty, you are Beautiful“.
