Recently I encountered the most courteous concierge who went far above and beyond any job description when he heard that I was flying into a city outside of California, where I couldn’t get a shuttle to my hotel due to a 6-hour flight delay.   I had phoned the hotel I would be staying at to see if they would arrange for a taxi to pick me up upon my arrival (what woman likes to hang out at an unfamiliar airport at 3 am right? ….).  No such luck.  However, a friend of mine who I had spoken to on the phone had mentioned it to Scott MacIntosh, concierge at the Beverly Hills Peninsula who, to my surprise, immediately arranged for someone to pick me up near the gate, help me with my luggage and drive me safely to my destination.  I’ve never even stayed at the Peninsula and yet they reached out across 2,000 miles and saved the day for me!  What a pleasure to encounter someone so thoughtful.  I’ll definitely remember him when I go gift shopping for the holidays!

Co raz częściej przekonuję się, że klimat wyjęty wprost z kultowego serialu “Beverly Hills 90210″ najbezpieczniej jest podziwiać, zza szklanego ekranu. Niestety, nie każdemu jest to dane. Ludzie skazani na szkołę prywatną muszą się z tym liczyć. Na codzień muszę wysłuchiwać rozmów o nowych kolekcjach w H&M’ie, snobistyczno – bananowych imprezach i o nowościach na Facebooku podczas, gdy w mojej duszy hula tęsknota za kompletnie innymi rozrywkami, których do czasu wyjazdu mi nie brakowało. Mam na myśli spędzanie wolnego czasu na przesiadywaniu przy ognisku, śpiewaniu do dźwięków gitary… Niestety dla ludzi, na których obecnie jestem skazana jest to rozrywka kompletnie obca. Bardzo żałuję, że nie jest mi dane ciągłe przebywanie ze studentami z krwi i kości, którzy potrafią się dobrze bawić bez wielkich wydatków, ekskluzywnych klubów i muzyki superekstrazajebistych DJów. Na szczęście w kręgu moich znajomych istnieje kilka dobrych duszyczek, które od czasu do czasu wyciągają mnie z ‘Banana’s World’ i pozwalają na spędzenie naprawdę miłych chwil. Poza tym bardzo drażni mnie fakt, że tacy bananowi ludzie przykładają bardzo małą uwagę do swojej edukacji (często nie mając pojęcia o banalnych sprawach), przez co nie ma klimatu do nauki.  Bardzo często zastanawiam się, czy wogóle wiedzą że są w takiej szkole nie tylko po to by jeść super ekstrazajebiste sałatki i lansować się najdroższą paczką papierosów.. Wolałabym usłyszeć od nich, np. “Nie masz kaski? Odpuść sobie, jutro przecież też jest dzień”  zamiast  “Nie będę jutro na zajęciach bo lecę do Londynu na przecenę kolekcji…” Jak narazię jestem z siebie dumna, ponieważ nie daję się wciągnąć do ich małego światka i mam nadzieję, że tak zostanie. O!

While being thankful for family and friends, enjoying yams and stuffing and making the pumpkin pie disappear on Thanksgiving day, get a jump on the next holiday.  Before everyone leaves the table make shopping a little more organized by creating a fun activity for your guests.

Create a 5.5″ x 8.5″ printed sheets with a few questions for everyone to complete while you have the family together. 

• What size shirt do you wear? 
• Who is your favorite designer?  
• What is your favorite musical group?
• What is your favorite charity?  (should your family make donations instead of gifts)

Be creative.  Include questions you want answered.  You might even make a game of letting everyone try and guess who belongs to each answer.  But you keep the cards and use the information to prepare your shopping list before you head to The Grove or Beverly Hills.  Download a Gift Tracker straight to your phone or Blackberry to keep the information with you while you shop.

Organized shopping is no different from organizing any other part of your life.  With a plan in place you can be more efficient and have more fun.  It will also help to keep you from just giving gifts that quickly turn into clutter for those you love.

Make your Thanksgiving easier on the host and yourself by following these do’s and don’ts.

1.  Do arrive on time.  Five or ten minutes after the start time is good.  No guest should show up early, not even a minute early as the host may be running around putting some last minute touches on setting the table.  You don’t want to make the host feel rushed.

2.  If you’re going to be more than 15 minutes late, call, and give the host an estimated arrival time.  A host should not be expected to delay a meal longer than 15 minutes for the latecomer.

3.  Don’t bring a guest unless invited to do so, and do not ask a host if you can bring a guest, unless the host is your family.

4.  Do bring a gift if appropriate.  It’s always nice to present a host or hostess with a token of appreciation like a bottle of wine, candy or gift soaps.  Don’t bring food unless specifically requested.

5.  Don’t gather in the kitchen unless the host asks you to.  Some people are comfortable cooking with an audience, others become distracted.

6.  Do compliment the food graciously, but be realistic.  The pumpkin pie may be marvelous, but don’t say it’s the best you ever tasted unless you really mean it.

7.  Don’t change place cards or ask to sit in a special place at a seated dinner.  Hosts put a great deal of thought into seating arrangements and a polite guest doesn’t try to out-think them.

8.  Do be on your best behavior.  Unless asked by the host, don’t open closed doors, cabinets, drawers, or medicine chests.  Tidy the bathroom after use.

9.  Don’t inquire about the cost of anything.

10. Do thank your hosts, all of them, when you leave.  It is nice to follow up with a thank-you note but personal notes are expected only for formal dinner parties.

11. Don’t drink excessively, use drugs, behave aggressively, or use crude language.  These behaviors violate the fundamentals of decency.

12.  Do enjoy yourself and have a great time!

Yes it’s true; after sleeping in some 35 different locations since March 19th I have finally ended up living in some very flash digs in Beverly Hills.

When you follow the winding road, without a map or a compass and with only your intuition and the hand of God to guide you it’s amazing where your journey may take you. C.S. Lewis describing Aslan the lion once said… “Safe? Who said anything about safe? He isn’t safe but he’s good.”

To often we can look for safety rather than goodness. When we lock ourselves up inside out houses and our gated communities, are we locked in or is the world locked out?

One thing I have noticed on my travels is that as people we often repel (or avoid) what we really desire. It is the unfriendly who long for friends, the deviants who crave intimacy and the safety seekers who truly desire adventure.

On Friday, November 20, 2009, George Anderson presented one of his most masterful trainings to date on Organizational Anger Management/Emotional Intelligence Training. This one day training for three different types of organizations consisted of three sample requests: one, two or four hour Organizational Anger Management Trainings.

 The assignment along with two Power Point Presentations which Mr. Anderson had previously given on the same topic, was given to the participants the day before the Friday training, with the requirement that they each present a one or two page proposal, as well as a one hour Power Presentation for the attendees.

 The responses from the participants were overwhelmingly positive. This training left each participant with a useable resource/template for any type of Organization Training using the Practice of Control.

 This one day training is available in a DVD Home Study format for the yearly required continuing education as well as live at Anderson & Anderson on Dec. 7, 2009.

Additionally, General Manager, Takspa Lekdan will share his own presentation at the next training.

Hotels have long been known for their social roles, and for their ability to continually reinvent themselves to relevant for today’s lifestyle taste. After all, consumer taste seems to change faster than changing bed linens.

In line with the idea of making every inch of the hotel a profit center. First it was the Spa, a permanent fixture in fine hotels today. And now, all eyes are on the best underutilized space: the Rooftop Area!

Just think about the title. The whole movie plot is right there. Every movie with ‘Beverly Hills’ in the title features a character or characters that are wealthy, arrogant, pampered, and disgusted by the idea of physical labor. But by the end of the movie, these characters have adjusted to a perky, more reasonable version of their past selves. They now do physical labor, like digging a trench, but they do it with a pink shovel. Such is the case with Chloe, the Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

Chloe’s owner, a high-rolling cosmetics company founder played by Jamie Lee Curtis, is supposedly very busy, but not too busy to dress her dog up like a child beauty pageant contestant. When a business trip commands her presence overseas, she’s forced to entrust her most prized possession to her air-headed niece, Rachel. Rachel and Chloe don’t get along because they are exactly alike. When Rachel and her friends take an impromptu trip to Mexico, Chloe is kidnapped by a mustached man for his underground dog-fighting ring. The rest of the movie follows Rachel and Chloe as they try to find each other in time before the chihuahua’s owner comes home.

Will they find each other? Of course they will! It’s a Disney movie for crying out loud!

The talking animations are good, but the flow of talking animals gets thrown off when Chloe runs into a completely animated iguana and rat. They break up the realistic animation with their over-the-top movements, and it feels like they were added last minute just so Cheech Marin could get some voice work in.

Drew Barrymore voices Chloe, and frankly, a dog is too smart for her voice. Sure, the prissy purebred is snooty and oblivious to what the unwashed commoners refer to as ‘work,’ but Drew’s voice is better suited for a single-cell organism, or at best an earthworm.

The Chloe character isn’t one to like as much as one to pity. All the animals that help her along the way do so because they feel sorry for her. All in all she’s unlikeable, despite, or because of, her zippy one-liners and goofy outfits.

Para tormento de los galanes de la escuela Teddy (Trevor Donovan) llegará a poner las hormonas de las chicas a tope. El nuevo jugador de tenis del colegio será el nuevo objetivo de algunas de las estudiantes, mientras que Gia, (Rumer Willis) una nueva estudiante de tendencia homosexual será una pieza clave en el periódico del colegio.

Hasta en las mejores familias
Resulta difícil pensar que son muchos los jóvenes que adquieren la independencia de los padres para vivir una vida sin reglas, 90210 va más allá de la premisa y se aleja, incluso de la historia que en los noventas también se convirtiera en escándalo. La segunda temporada de la nueva versión trajo a la pantalla chica la exposición de casos que podrían encontrarse en cualquier lugar: adicciones, madres adolescentes, libertinaje y abandono, pero la serie sabe llevarlo de la mano con mucho glamour, la máscara favorita de las chicas de Beverly Hills.

Pese a todo, esta nueva versión no ha contado con el éxito de la primera, en la que Kelly, Brenda, Brandon, Steve, Andrea, Donna y muchos más vieron correr su vida en la preparatoria e incluso dar el salto a la universidad, además de que permanecieron en el gusto del público durante una década.

Han sido dos años los que 90210 está por cumplir y, a pesar de la herencia de la producción anterior, sus protagonistas tienen mucho trabajo por delante para demostrar que su talento puede ir más allá de estos personajes e incluso brincar a la pantalla grande.

The Debate Over Darwin Continues: Stephen Meyer vs. Michael Shermer in Beverly Hills

In less than two weeks we will witness the rematch of the decade as Stephen Meyer and Michael Shermer face off on the question of intelligent design versus evolution.

These two men have met several times before, most recently at Freedomfest in Las Vegas in 2008 (click here for video). They also sparred in 2005 at Westminster College and appeared together on Lee Strobel’s Faith Under Fire program (video here). It will be interesting to see the new insights into the questions at hand as this debate has matured and developed.

The debate is hosted by the American Freedom Alliance and will take place at the prestigious Saban Theater in Beverly Hills on Monday, November 30, at 7:30pm. Dr. Meyer and Dr. Shermer will be joined by Dr. Richard Sternberg and Dr. Donald Prothero, respectively.

Just typing this post is making me excited to be thinking about going home to Beverly Hills. New York is a great city for the subway, the cutlutre, the noise, the unwanted smells, the food, the weather, etc. However I am a Cali girl at heart and love where I grew up.

In the old days, you use to see actresses smoking in the movies very often. Not anymore though. Of course we all know that smoking massively increases your risk of developing cancer – and that should be enough of a reason right there to avoid it. If you need a short term excuse to quit though, you should know that smoking damages your skin faster than you can imagine. As your body tries to flush the toxins out, your skin loses its natural glow, and the suppleness disappears, leaving wrinkles in it’s place.

In Beverly Hills, smoking has long-since fallen out of fashion. If you care about your skin health and overall health, don’t smoke – and avoid being around those that do. Second-hand smoke won’t help your skin either.

Tip Number 3: Don’t Stress Out

If there’s one thing the women in Beverly Hills are really good at, it’s relaxing. These ladies know that it’s important to take time out everyday to just kick back and take a time out. Too much stress causes chemical reactions in your body that can age your skin. If you want to avoid wrinkles for as long as possible, make sure you learn to take it easy too.

Some quiet time by yourself in the morning, a soak in the tub in the evening, a short walk during the day; any of these can bring down your stress levels, relax your body and help keep your skin looking young and healthy.

This not-to-be-missed annual extravaganza is chock full of surprises and amazing entertainment. The fun gets underway mid-afternoon on Saturday, November 21 with tons of family activities and entertainment including balloon and caricature artists, jugglers, musicians and carolers. Santa and Mrs. Claus will also be milling about later in the afternoon, ready to review and discuss any and all wish lists. At 7:00 pm, prepare to be mesmerized when the Mayor and special celebrity guest and UNICEF supporter, Rebecca Mader, flip the switch on the stunning 12,000-crystal UNICEF snowflake floating over the Beverly Wilshire hotel and the thousands of twinkle lights along Rodeo Drive. The grand finale? An awe-inspiring fireworks display overhead, synchronized to the music of the season. The UNICEF crystal snowflake will remain illuminated until January 1, 2010.

Recently I met with a local photographer that only shoots property photos for real estate agents. He doesn’t photograph people. Our introduction was a good one because he was willing to refer agents who need head shots to me. Realtors in particular tend to use their likeness all over their marketing material. My suggestion and professional advise is that if you plan on using your photo to help market your business make sure you hire a professional.

The above mentioned photographer said that a lot of his clients ask for a “quick headshot” while he is photographing the home. “We’re here, you’ve got a camera let’s just take a few pictures.” It’s not that easy. He knows that his strength is not working with people, giving direction, trying to convey a message or feeling with the photo of a person. A headshot or executive portrait shouldn’t be an afterthought.

When considering getting a head shot or business portrait ask yourself some questions. What will I use the photo for? Do I need a different look for my website and business card? Should I wear a suit and tie or my favorite Hawaiian Shirt? (the answer to the latter is almost never) Will the images be photoshopped? Will the images look better if they are retouched? Should I bring wardrobe options so that I can get variations or multiple images?

Earlier this month Carlos called me to update his headshot. Carlos is a real estate agent with Keller Williams based out of the Beverly Hills Office. We shot several looks so that he could have different images for different applications. He’ll have a photo for his website as well as a different photo for his marketing efforts on social networking sites like facebook and linkedin. He also decided that professional retouching would be advantages. The second image shows image before and after retouching. The photo on the left is displayed as it came out of the camera. In this case a $2500 camera with a $1800 lens. Does the quality of the camera gear matter?  A little bit, but the illustration is meant to show the quality and amount of work that goes into a photo to make it look professional.
