The Ajith starrer Asal is almost complete barring a few scenes. One of the important scenes in the film was shot yesterday at the Sivaji Ganesan house in T Nagar Chennai. A song that features Ajith and Bhavana is being shot at the AVM Studios today. With this, the major portion of the shooting seems to have come to an end.

There are reports from Kollywood that Ajith, along with the Asal team, including its director Saran, will participate in a press meet that is scheduled to be held on December 15th, 2009. More information pertaining to Asal is expected to be out during the press meet.

Ever wonder if dance/movement therapy is like yoga or how the two disciplines are different? Both dance/movement therapy and yoga operate on the premise of the mindbody connection. I often am asked by those unfamiliar with DMT if it is essentially like yoga.

Here’s the perfect chance to discover the answers to those questions for yourself.

Co-Sponsored by the Southern California Chapter of the American Dance Therapy Association and the UCLArts & Healing Initiative, “The Dance of Yoga” is a 3.0 continuing education workshop for mental health professionals and those interested in healing through dance and/or yoga.

November 7, 2009
9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

The workshop presenter is Kathy Cass, MA, BC-DMT, NCC, CYT, a registered dance therapist, nationally certified counselor, and a certified yoga therapist with over 25 years of instructional and clinical experience with a variety of populations. She has expertise as a long-standing director of a non-profit therapeutic dance/yoga organization as well as a movement/yoga consultant for numerous institutions and individuals.

Kathy has been a member and head of the ADTA Credentials Committee for two years and was just recently re-elected. She has been a guest lecturer at Scripps College, The Center for Movement Education & Research at Loyola Marymount University and Tiverton House at UCLA. Kathy is currently a part-time faculty member at Santa Monica College Emeritus Division and an Advisory Board Member for CSUF Extended Education in Expressive Arts Therapies. She also maintains a private practice including group and individual supervision in Santa Monica, CA.

Workshop Description:
What is the relationship between dance/movement therapy and yoga? Learn basic concepts, experience the process and learn specific techniques to integrate yoga into your personal and professional life. Learn about the philosophy and panchamaya model of yoga and how it blends and differs from basic dance therapy theory.

Focusing mostly on asana, prananayama and bhavana (postures, breath and visualization,) we will practice a short yoga sequence as well as a creative movement/dance exploration utilizing some of the asanas as a “theme”.

Attendance at this conference meets the qualifications for 3 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (Provider #4468). Continuing education credit is also available for BC-DMTs and R-DMTs.

Development

Following the commence of production for Ajith Kumar’s Aegan in late December 2007, reports indicated that Ajith Kumar will act in a film produced by Sivaji Productions directed by Gautham Menon. Three months later, it was confirmed that the project would go ahead as planned as soon as both, the director and the actor finished their respective projects.

The film, which was due to start its first schedule during June 2008, had been built up as the final instalment in Gautham Menon’s police trilogy, following his two earlier ventures, Kaaka Kaaka and Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu; which Ajith Kumar was originally meant to be a part of.

However other indications suggested that the film is the remake of the classic, Pudhiya Paravai starring Sivaji Ganesan, which Ganesan’s son, Prabhu, who is the producer for the project denied. The film earlier rumoured to be titled, Kanavugal Karpanaigal or Vaanam Kadandha Siragugal, was finalized with the title of Surangani, which was later abbreviated to Sura. In January 2009, the film was reannounced by Prabhu. The story was subsequently changed and Saran was signed up as the film’s director. Ajith Kumar also apparently underwent an appearance change the same month, citing that it was to be used for his character in the film.

In April 2009, the tagline “The Power Of Silence” was added to the film’s title. The photo shoot session of Asal will commence on May 4, 2009, it was revealed by sources close to the film’s unit.

Asal is one of the first South Indian films that is going to be shown in Russia.

Mahatma Gandhiji and PremJi Maharaj not only share the same birthday (October 2nd) – both of them were devotees of Lord Ram. So many of Sant Mahatmas like them must have bhavana, attitude and feelings such as ” Rome Rome Shree Ram Pukare ..,” that most of us can’t even imagine.

Hum par bhi aisi kripa karo mere Ram. Hamara rome rome bhi Shree Ram Pukare ..aisi kripa karo mere Ram. (Bless me Lord Ram so that every atom of my being calls for Shree Ram.. yearns for Shree Ram).

Our Gurujans tell us that for this to happen we must do our practice consistently and also attend Satsangs (where Sant Mahatmas and true devotees are present). We need to and must go again and again and learn from Sant Mahatmas how they lead a life of selfless service, express love and devotion to God, and impart knowledge in spiritual discourses, etc.

According to Shree Swamiji Maharaj, Mahatma Gandhiji used to recite Sthitpragya Ke Lakshan (Shreemad Bhagvad Gita – second chapter) with heart at both times of his daily prayers.

We can learn from the lives of Mahatma Gandhiji and our Gurujans by following their advice and may be one day with Ram Kripa we will also be blessed with similar bhavana and bhakti.

May the following dhun sung by Maharajji evoke similar devotional feelings in us.

This “ Buddhist deity meditation temporarily augments visuospatial abilities” has so

This “ Buddhist deity meditation temporarily augments visuospatial abilities” has something to do with 10-day Retreat I mentioned earlier. Buddhadasa Bhikku(อาจารย์พุทธทาส)’s meditation method1taught there is quite similar to the Deity Yoga (DY) method. The only difference is that we’re not focusing on deity. I remember focusing on some simple geometrical shape like a pyramid. Then change its color, texture, and rotating it around without loosing sight of it. But I think it’s taught just because it’s pedagogically easier. Of course, Open Presence (OP) is deemed safer if the practitioner tends to believe that the image he or she creates is real. On a related note, if you’ve a chance to take a course on meditation with a lot of people, another interesting thing to be observed is that meditation may invoke some visible physiological response. (เหมือนผีเข้าอะไรประมาณนี้)

Any expert or non-expert out there, do you know of any interesting and important (from scientific point of view) research about meditation? (And please lecture me why you think it’s important) I think I’m interested in neuroplasticity in particular. The reason is probably because my main interest since I was admitted to a university has been mental development and learning about learning. I still remember telling P’ Chai (พี่อัครชัย) when we first met that I want “freedom.” My thought wasn’t clear at that time, but roughly I meant that I want to exorcise fear, problems etc. by purely brain power. And I still find it interesting to know these kind of things. It’d be good if my neuroscientist friend has something to say about this.

1. To be specific, it’s only one of the steps of his style of anapanasati (อานาปานสติ). Furthermore, concentrattion (samata สมถะ) is just one of two aspects of bhavana. (There’s also “mindfulness” วิปัสสนา.)

P.S. What I’m trying to do? I’m trying to communicate.

Edit: Some pointers I’ve found http://intentions.wordpress.com/2008/07/08/meditation-and-brain-science/ (not exactly what I want though.)

After inspecting Less Wrong for a while, and running off to buy “Confessions of a Philosopher:A Personal Journey Through Western Philosophy from Plato to Popper” and “What the Buddha Taught” from a nearby bookstore (although I haven’t read even near a substantial part of them), it’s finally the time to examine what’s with this Buddhism, that is my state religion, and the source of the beginning of my sanity at 10-day retreat when I turned 20–2 years ago. And thus break the semi-vow that I won’t talk about Buddhism in English. I may not make myself that clear because I don’t want this post to be too long.

Science vs religion conflict is common in western society. One compromising is that science deals with how we do things and religion deals with what we should do. Religion is teleological in nature, or so we often say. It’s easier to believe in science (not by faith) because it is testable, and works. As a child, I had always doubt how can we conclude that there’s an objective reality that I almost became a solipsist especially with respect to the other minds problem, except that I didn’t think I could draw any conclusive logical argument from that viewpoint. So the first term I became a physics major was an intellectual liberation to me, that we can be satisfied with “a good approximation.” Since then, I has consciously advocated practicality.

Practicality is meaningful only when there exists a goal. Then I can use decision theory, Bayesian inference, or whatever to make a decision that works according to my goal. That’s science. But how should we determine the goal? especially the ultimate goal of life? I doubt that we’ll ever have the single governing set of criteria applicable to all possible situations, that is self consistent and never troubles the conscience of everyone in his/her right mind. But how can we make sure that we’ve the right mind i.e. we’re sane1, so that we can trust our conscience, or ready2 to act rationally and accordingly on the immediate situation? The practice of Buddhism, bhavana (ภาวนา เหมือนในภาวนามยปัญญาซึ่งหมายถึงปัญญาจากการปฏิบัติ ไม่ใช่ความรู้จากการปฏิบัติ อย่างทำโจทย์ทำแลบแล้วรู้มากขึ้นนี่ไม่เกี่ยวกัน): meditation, mental culture or mental training if you like, can make us sane. Bhavana is a mere observation of one’s own mind. It is not mystic or supernatual. As someone in Physics Forums said a long time ago: “it’s just physiology.”

Bryan Magee writes in his “Confessions of a Philosopher” (pp. 347-8) that,

…Buddhism came across to me as an agnostic religion, one that often did justice to the difficulty and complexity of fundamental questions facing human beings (which common sense realism hopelessly fails to do) without attempting to impose dogmatic answers. It occurs often in philosophy that there is more insight in the formalation of a problem than in any of the proposed solutions to it; and it seems to me that recognition of this was a distinctive characteristic of Buddhism.

But I have this problem… [all religions] tell us things that, but I find myself thinking: “How do they know? Perhaps what they say is true. I would like it to be. And it would be nice if it were true. But what reason do they have for saying that it is?” And I have never heard a convincing answer to that question.

I think he unfortunately misses the point. What Buddhism, with the misleading suffix -ism denoting a doctrine, really cares is practical methods e.g. bhavana, not the philosophical ideas that it entails. Like science, you cannot just think and convince yourself, you have to get your hand dirty and try it out with skepticism (do experiment). Then what you get is a working theory, and some philosophical implication, but science doesn’t work because of convincing philosophical implication. Some influential Buddhist monk such as Buddhadasa Bhikkhu said, from his experience experimenting these methods, that scientific methods and Buddhism’s practice are alike because they’re both testable, and even reproducible. More importantly, he rejects purely philosophical thinking which can lead one astray. (Bhavana is not conceiving, but perceiving) Certainly I can’t believe him since I haven’t practice to that level yet. And indeed, the teaching of the Buddha himself warns us against various kind of belief, including believing because of authority. (Also whether Buddha existed as a historical person or not doesn’t matter. Buddhists don’t care.) Buddhism works the same way as science because they’re the methods that humans developed when we don’t trust our rationality.

Another drastic departure from typical religions that Buddhism makes is that it refuses to care about metaphysics. But why should we believe that their claim that it’s testable, or that what we usually do is insane, is not metaphysical? This question is unavoidable, but I think it’s actually the “problem of common knowledge.” For instance, it’s possible to conceive from all possible experimental loopholes a refute of the violation of Bell’s inequality, which turned a metaphysical argument into a testable experiment, but one has to accept that a majority of physicists will consider the attempt to be just a wishful thinking. Why, in this case, can we say confidently that it’s a wishful thinking? I think it’s because physics is already a common knowledge. (Most of us don’t even see the experiments by ourselves!) Like someone’s saying that the first reaction to a new scientific theory is wrong, the second is that it’s trivial, and the third is that it’s well known. How can one be so sure about one’s subjective mental state? Or that the majority of people live an insane, uncontrollable, and dishonest life? I view Buddhism like science; we can’t be absolutely sure about it until we try it out for ourselves, but it has proved itself numerous times (at least in Asia) that it can make what once thought to be impractical practical. I was just lucky to be in the right place and at the right time so that the practice of Buddhism is a relatively common knowledge. (Indeed, I doubt that most Thai people are aware of this.)

Buddhism the way I see it only offers us sanity, which is morally neutral. Bhavana makes it possible to overcome wishful thinkings or even hard-wired behaviors like fear, and ready to think, decide, and act accordingly. And since bhavana involves letting go of the concept of permanent self, there’s no point talking about the ultimate goal of life. We just do what works, on a case by case basis, but now with our unbiased perception and good conscience. (I’m being very brief here. “What the Buddha Taught” is a good primer/reference.) However, as it’s emphasized throughout the post, just reading and thinking about Buddhism’s philosophy does more harm than good. Talking further about how bhavana changes me positively is misleading. And I don’t have the skill to teach it correctly either. So I should end it here. If this post has introduced the reader to Buddhism, then I’ve gained more than I could ever ask for.

1. I once wrote down ”the Ninnat’s principle” that peace/happiness comes from within and not without, and the goal of bhavana is to achieve peace/happiness. But I find the word peace/happiness superficial and too positive. Do you kill in order to gain peace? do you kill in order to gain happiness? Maybe, if peace/happiness worths the killing. Wars happen because of that kind of thought. (Believing in absolute good or absolute evil is even worse.) From the 10-day retreat I felt a kind of happiness that I had never felt before. That can be mistaken as the goal of bhavana, and we might wrongly equate happiness with practicality, almost like a utilitatian. But what I felt is not an arbitrary kind of happiness. It’s the happiness from constant self-respect, mutual respect for other people, and the potential to find something positive in any kind of situation, among other things.

2. A common misinterpretation is that Buddhism teaches us to annihilate desire, but how can we do anything at all if there’s no desire? But actually Buddhism teaches us not to find things attractive or repulsive, so that we’re ready to act appropriately. (Students’ prime example is procrastination caused by the view that studying/doing homework is not favorable.)

P.S. In spite of the book’s errorous viewpoint presented here, I’m sure “Confessions of a philosopher” will be enjoyable. I’ll save it for the 3-stop flight next week.

Director P Vasu’s sequel to the blockbuster Kannada film Apthamithra, titled Aptharaksha is nearing

Director P Vasu’s sequel to the blockbuster Kannada film Apthamithra, titled Aptharaksha is nearing completion. As like in the original, the director had roped in Vishnu Vardhan to play the lead role. This has raised the speculations that Vasu may contemplate remaking the film in Tamil. When questioned about this, the director said that he had narrated a one-line story to Rajinikanth and the ball is now in his court. Vasu says that Aptharaksha has four heroines in the star cast – Sandhya, Bhavana, Lakshmi Gopalasamy and Vimala Raman but he refused to disclose who among them plays the Chandramukhi role.

Meanwhile, the director has lapped up an opportunity to direct a Hindi film. This film, which is yet to be titled, is said to have Saif Ali Khan in the lead.

Homely Actress Recently Signed the Project “ASAL” With Ajit to act as rude girl.

Usually actress Bhavana appeared in movies as a homely girl but for a change she is going to be shown in a hot pose ever in her career. After Nayanthara bikini in “Billa” Ajith ordered the actress Bhavana to appear in Bikini.

Director Saran thought that the actress may not like to wear bikini but surprisingly without making any problems actress Bhavana confirms to the director that she would appear in hot bikini like actress Nayanthara. Hope actress Bhavana may think that she can also capture more hearts by appearing in bikini.

Hey Raghunandan Aa Bhi Jayo Shabri Ki Jhumparia.

Pujya Maharajji reminded us that as Ma Shabri we must learn to have patience.

First of all we will be very lucky if we can cultivate our feelings/Bhavana for Lord Ram as Ma Shabri had in her heart. Second, if we can truly say that our life has been in constant rememberance (Simran) of Lord Ram. Third, it will be great if we can have patience and faith of Ma Shabri.

Krishna Vamsi is the director for this movie. Like hero Srikanth he is also in failures now.

Present he need a super duper hit, which brings him into Tollywood crazy directors list.
