TIRUCHI: Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) is gaining importance as a tool to prevent rather than detect defects and is a significant part of the overall quality plan of manufacturing, Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) B. Prasada Rao said here on Thursday.

This meant that there had to be more real-time evaluation and in-built feedback control system.

This was an area of great potential for large-scale automation and multi-disciplinary integration, Mr. Rao said, inaugurating the national seminar and exhibition on NDE organised by the Tiruchi Chapter of the Indian Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ISNT).

The Tiruchi Chapter is organising the prestigious conference after 17 years. The exhibition on the theme is ‘NDE in power industry’.

NDE professionals had a great role to play in the context of the nation’s requirement of uninterrupted power generation from all its utilities. NDE today was an integral part of manufacturing system for quality control through on-line monitoring, structural integrity assessment of finished products and in residual life assessment of structural systems like aged power plants.

Power plant equipment manufacturers wanted NDE to be speedy, delinking human dependence on interpretation. It had to be defect-preventive, easily recordable and retrievable and, of course, reliable and repeatable.

“If you could pack these within a reasonable cost, you would have certainly delighted your customers,” Mr. Rao told the huge gathering of NDE professionals.

“As users, we have the liberty to ask for the NDE to be done when the weld is hot or just cooling, without waiting time. We may sound prima facie ridiculous, but we would demand NDE to be done on inaccessible areas. NDE should be non-contact type, when required.”

There were realms like online ultrasonic testing of tubular butt joints that BHEL needed to move into.

There was great potential for further improvements in speed through reduced NDE exposure times and automated on-line systems.

Delivering the key-note address, A.V. Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchi, said the survival yardsticks in these demanding times essentially translated into trouble-free service of power plants.

This was where quality and NDE professionals had a big role.

There was a lot of effort behind defining the quality of raw materials.

The NDE provided confidence on the raw material. The demands on the NDE in manufacturing processes were growing, and many NDE techniques complemented the integrity assurance systems.

Efforts to update some of the conventional NDE techniques by taking advantage of developments in microprocessors, computers and digital processing techniques should continue.

Dilip Takbhate, president, ISNT, said that the Asia Pacific Conference on NDT would be held on a grand scale in the year 2013 in Mumbai.

Briefing about NDE 2009, R.J. Pardikar, convenor, said 180 technical papers would be presented in four parallel sessions.

Chairman of ISNT, Tiruchi Chapter, V. Thyagarajan, said the NDE 2009 would set a national benchmark.

Rao flags off the first consignment of supercritical boiler components for Krishnapatnam project from Tiruchi on Wednesday.

TIRUCHI: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Tiruchi, achieved a major milestone on Wednesday with the despatch of the first consignment of supercritical boiler components for its 2 x 800 MW power project at Krishnapatnam in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.

Mr. B.P. Rao, Chairman and Managing Director, BHEL, flagged off the consignment in the presence of Mr.A. V. Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL Tiruchi Complex, and other senior officials.

The Rs. 2,500-crore order for BHEL’s first supercritical 800 MW boilers was placed by the Andhra Pradesh Power Development Company Limited (APPDCL), a joint venture of APGenco and ILFS (Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services Limited).

According to a BHEL press release, BHEL had demonstrated its international competitiveness by securing this order by outbidding the L&T-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) combine in a global tender.

BHEL’s scope of work includes manufacture, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of the steam generators and associated auxiliaries. While the supercritical boilers are being manufactured at BHEL’s Boiler Plant at Tiruchirappalli, the coal mills and electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) are being supplied by BHEL’s manufacturing units at Hyderabad and Ranipet respectively.

BHEL has also formed a joint venture with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) for setting up a 2 x 800 MW supercritical thermal power project at Udangudi in Tiruchendur taluk of Tuticorin district. It will be the first supercritical power project in Tamil Nadu at a total capital outlay of around Rs 8,700 crore.

Leveraging the joint venture route, BHEL has signed another agreement with the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) to build, own and operate thermal power plants with supercritical parameters at Edlapur and Eramarus in the Raichur district of Karnataka.

Recently, BHEL secured another major order worth Rs. 5,600 core for supplying three 660 MW supercritical thermal sets for the 1980 MW Prayagraj Thermal Power Project being set up at Bara in the Allahabad district of Uttar Pradesh by Prayagraj Power Generation Company Limited (PPGCL), owned by the private sector Jaiprakash Associates Limited (JAL).

Prasada Rao, Chairman and Managing Director, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, addressing a press conference in Tiruchi on Wednesday.

TIRUCHI: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) will commission its Thirumayam plant in Pudukkottai district by the end of 2011, its Chairman and Managing Director B. Prasada Rao said on Wednesday.

Construction of compound wall on the 40 acre site was started during September. The BHEL has made known the need for additional land for the plant, Mr. Rao said addressing a press conference.

The BHEL has been posting a year-on-year growth of 20 per cent over the past five years owing to capacity addition initiatives. In the second quarter the growth in revenue was 21 per cent. “We expect to reach the 62,000 MW mark with certainty by the end of the current five-year plan. With more efforts, 5,000 MW more could be added,” he said.

As for the Tiruchi plant, the BHEL was on its way to achieving the target of 6.5 lakh tonnes, he said. In the subsequent plan periods, the main demand of clients will be for supercritical boilers. Besides improving efficiency, supercritical sets lessen emission, he said, referring to the Tiruchi unit’s despatch of first consignment of supercritical boiler components for its 2 x 800 MW power project at Krishnapatnam in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. Orders for five 660 MW supercritical boilers have so far been placed on BHEL.

Mr. Rao saw an opportunity for BHEL to capitalise on its technologies when asked about India’s assurance at the Copenhagen Summit to carry out 20-25 per cent carbon emission intensity cuts on the 2005 levels by 2020. By indigenising a range of both main and auxiliary products through absorbing technologies of 70 international companies over the past 40 to 45 years, BHEL enjoys a natural advantage, he said, expecting to attain revenue of Rs. 50,000 crore by 2012. The pending orders were worth Rs. 1.3 lakh crore. Mr. Rao expected the demand for captive power plants to grow by 10 per cent.

Through capacity addition and increase in manpower the BHEL was poised to augment its manufacturing capacity to 20,000 MW by 2012. Over the last two years, manpower was added to the extent of 8,500 in all categories like officers and workmen. Over the next three years, an addition of 4,000 will be made each year such that the overall number will reach 50,000 to 53,000 by 2012, said Mr. Rao.

The BHEL has begun to explore new markets in Africa. The company exports its products to South East Asian countries, Central Asian countries, Oman, Iran, Iraq, Libya and Sudan, Mr. Rao said.

Responding to a query Mr. Rao said that the BHEL was interested in manufacturing nuclear power plant equipment. Through its MoU with BEL (Bharat Electronics), the BHEL has taken steps to enhance its solar power generation to eight megawatts. Depending on the policy initiatives, the BHEL will scale up solar power generation with appropriate technology integration at the right time.

Mr. Rao was accompanied by the Executive Director of BHEL, Tiruchi, A.V. Krishnan and other senior officials.

Hello everyone,

Last sunday (29/11/09) BHEL conducted its GET test. About the test for electronics stream::

There were two parts technical and aptitude with each section having 120 questions.

The total time for the test was 150 minutes.

For the technical questions there were five options for each question and for the aptitude mostly there were four (can’t recall if they had five)

Negative marking was 1/5th and since the OMR sheets had to be shaded using a pen, there was no way to change an option once it is marked.

TECHNICAL PART (Electronics)

Not that many questions where you had to calculate stuff. General statement type questions.

A lot of general engineering questions (escape velocity, adiabatic process, etc)

A good 20 odd questions from mechanical stream I think…like percentage of Chromium in steel, coins are made from which process, what is hardness etc etc

Had very little math questions!

APTITUDE PART:

Had a good mix of English and numerical aptitude questions.

For the English part there were closest meaning, opposite meaning, reading comprehension, find the mistake kind of questions

Numerical aptitude had simple as well as CAT like questions.

That’s all I guess. Time was short so one needs to be quick. Best preparatory material will not be GATE type but objective type questions!!! Obviously calculators were not allowed!!

They keep the question papers ..so can’t list more of the questions, but I believe this should give you some idea.

Leadership in product quality is the most important requirement for any company to satisfy its customers and to achieve market leadership, said A.V. Krishnan, Executive Director, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, Tiruchi, here on Monday.

Inaugurating the Quality Month activities at a function held at the BHEL, Mr. Krishnan, said that in keeping with the theme ‘Striving for leadership in product quality for customer success,’ the BHEL, Tiruchi would focus on bringing about company-wide improvements that would directly impact the quality of products and services that ultimately reached customers and other stakeholders.

Addressing general managers, employees’ representatives and other senior officials after administering them the BHEL quality pledge, Mr. Krishnan said that Quality Month activities had to go beyond re-dedication of all employees to the quality movement. He called upon all departments to rejuvenate the BHEL’s commitment to quality during the month by identifying and launching at least one initiative in their respective areas that would enhance the satisfaction of stakeholders with the BHEL’s products and services so that by the end of the month, these initiatives would be integrated into day-to-day operations of the company. All employees took the pledge at their work stations.

Earlier, Mr. Krishnan along with representatives of participative unions, supervisory and executive associations and two senior most employees of the BHEL, Tiruchi – N.P. Murugesan, Additional Engineer (Grade-II)/Operation, Planning & Control (Fossil Boilers), and A. Ezhilarasu, Senior Deputy general manager/Purchase (Valves) – inaugurated the Quality Month observed every year during the month of November.
