Zardari seems to be reaching new levels of desperation. Yesterday, he tried to ban Dr Shahid Masood’s program “Meray Mutabiq” by stopping it’s transmission from Dubai (though it still made the airwaves).

Another sign of his desperation is that he seems to have dug out the old picture of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and buried the picture of Benazir Bhutto — do excuse the pun.

I september 2007 hadde facebook over 720 000 norske brukere. Nettby, Biip, Blink, HamarUngdom, Deiligst og World of Warcraft har alle over 100 000 norske brukere.

This week French President Sarkozy called for a ban to be placed on Muslim women who choose to express their faith by observing hijab and donning a burkha. The French have been the most vocal and active in the arena of attacking religious freedom. In 2004 they outlawed the use of headscarves, Sikh turbans, large Christian crosses and Jewish skullcaps in their state schools. The French defend their law which is designed to strictly adhere to their ideas of separation of church and state, but French liberalism is coming dangerously close to ending religious freedom. Even worse it seems to be spreading to other parts of Europe. Italy, Turkey, three Belgian towns and seven of Germany’s 16 states have banned headscarves. While speaking in Cairo President Obama said it clearly, “it is important for Western countries to avoid impeding Muslim citizens from practicing religion as they see fit – for instance, by dictating what clothes a Muslim woman should wear. We cannot disguise hostility towards any religion behind the pretence of liberalism.” Members of the French Parliament, from both the left and right called the burkha an “oppressive dress that breaches individual freedoms”.

Individual freedoms? According to whom? There are many in the world who would consider Western women oppressed because they feel compelled to don a style of dress that is made to entice and attract men. Indeed, upon hearing the new French policy the spokesman for the Muslim Council of Great Britain said, “Unfortunately, there is a pressure on women to dress skimpily in the West.” I agree.

Perhaps the burkha could provide greater freedom than a skimpy bikini ever could. It can be said that the burkha is a tyrannical and repressive piece of clothing forced on the women who wear it, but the same could be said of a bikini. Both the burkha and the bikini are worn to indulge the whims of men in the society they represent. The burkha is worn to mask and conceal that which belongs or could belong to the men, and the bikini is worn to expose and display the same. Both articles of clothing find their impetus in their effort to control and subjugate women.

Women long to adopt a carefree and liberating expression in their choice of clothing. There are few women that can wear a bikini and feel comfortable in it. Even supermodels lament because they feel their thighs or behinds are more ample than they should be. Donning a large black covering in the morning could provide a liberation few Western women have experienced. To arrive at work, school, or social occasion without first applying makeup, dressing the hair, and fussing over clothing would be a dream come true!

One need only to read the comments and remarks made about Hilary Clinton’s appearance to long for this type of freedom. During her run for the democratic presidential nomination, what Mrs. Clinton said was never as important, as how she was dressed when she said it. The criticism made about Mrs. Clinton’s hair, makeup, body type, and clothing took precedence over what she was saying. Her legs were compared to tree trunks, her clothes called frumpy, and her hair and makeup was the topic of many water cooler gatherings. In the same vein, such discussions did not take place about Benazir Bhutto or Indira Gandhi when they were Prime Ministers of their countries. The political pundits debated their political agendas and viewpoints, not their choice of clothing or makeup. Perhaps this was because the males in their countries were conditioned to view respectable women in a non-sexual way, and therefore these women were taken more seriously than Hilary Clinton.

Men will be unable to view women as equal—as long as women continue to exercise their right to seduce men, and therefore objectify themselves. If women will dress in a manner that does not engage a man’s libido and instead engages his mind, they will be able to experience true freedom and liberation. Both women and men should be disturbed by this fact: the American voting public is unable to elect a woman even as a vice-president. While India, in 1966 and Pakistan, in 1988—countries thought by the West to have little equality for women, had already elected women as Prime Ministers!

Pakistan has one of the largest Muslim populations in the world. It’s filled with rich culture and various backgrounds. Look at the difference between the people of South Carolina and New York. Then look at the difference of the people of Lahore compared to the people of Peshawar. It’s a sad time for the country. Due to the lack of educated politicians who steal from the international aide meant for the country and some people who want to spread a message through unjust means the country is headed into Turmoil.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed this but pretty much everyday there’s some unfortunate event that has gone on there. In the past 7 months alone 2,700+ civilians have been killed in pointless attacks. I mean what do these people hope to get accomplished hurting innocent people. Dozens of innocent men, women, and children trying to go on with there regular routines killed everyday.

It’s funny. Hillary Clinton got one of the most unwelcoming vibes any official has received while on a trip to Pakistan. Asking people straight up where the most wanted person in the world is isn’t really nice. I guarantee your crowd of college students don’t know. In fact a girl responded “It’s 9/11 here everyday”. And from the looks of it.. That’s true.

Be grateful for living in a safe and peaceful environment.

Initially published in The Daily News.

This is with reference to Nawab Mumtaz Ali Bhutto’s article “Rise and fall” (Nov 2). Surprisingly Nawab sahib is addressing Benazir Bhutto as a shaheed today and his present ‘whipping boy’ is Asif Ali Zardari. This takes me a few years back when Mr Bhutto was using exactly the same language about Benazir Bhutto. Would Mr Bhutto be kind enough to describe the reasons behind this change in his sentiments?

The criticism of Mr Bhutto about President Zardari’s expenditures and resources seems totally biased and hypocritical as Nawab sahib, a self-proclaimed ‘chieftain’ of the Bhutto tribe, has never made his assets public nor is there any public information about his tax returns. This is not a secret though that Mr Bhutto owns huge land holdings and urban assets and enjoys a lavish lifestyle while his own haris are deprived of basic necessity like clean water.

As regards his venom against the democratic process and President Zardari’s regime, one can clearly feel the love for power which makes Mr Bhutto dream for an unconstitutional change thus creating an opportunity of becoming a ‘caretaker’ — once again. There is a democratic set-up in place and parliament has a legitimate right to complete its constitutional term. Like it or not Nawab sahib, you have to wait and let the political process take its course.

Another alternate Mr Bhutto can resort to is to go back to his parent political party, the PPP, become a part of the democratic process and raise his voice inside the party and in parliament. If Mr Bhutto has decided to stay away from the democratic process then the best course for him is to sit back and wait for the present regime to come back to the people in the next election. If President Zardari is such a failure, people will reject him in the next election.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Quaid Altaf Husain has advised President Asif Ali Zardari to quit as President.

KARACHI: The chief of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Altaf Hussain has decided to oppose NRO in the Parliament and advice President Asif Ali Zardari to quit as president.

The senior analyst of Geo News Dr.Shahid Masood said the top leadership of MQM had conveyed the message to President Zardari through Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Baber Awan to give sacrifice along with accomplices and face courts.
Talking to Dr. Shahd Masood, MQM leader Altaf Hussain said told the government that NRO is a black law and it should not be presented in the assembly but government had ignored the suggestion and presented it in the parliament. The MQM coordination committee will announce the decision from MQM.

Talking to Dunya News senior analyst Haroon Rashid said that NRO had no future. “NRO is nowhere. Government is already weak and it shouldn’t increase its problems by brining NRO into the parliament,” Haroon opined.
NRO was issued by the former president of Pakistan General (R) Pervez Musharraf on October 5, 2007. It granted amnesty to politicians, political workers and bureaucrats who were accused of corruption, embezzlement, money-laundering, murder and terrorism between 1st January 1986 and October 12th 1999, the time between two Martial Laws.
The NRO states: “Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in sub-section(1), the Federal Government or a Provincial Government may, before the judgment is pronounced by a trial court, withdraw from the prosecution of any person including an absconding accused who is found to be falsely involved for political reasons or through political victimization in any case initiated between 1st day of January, 1986 to 12th day of October, 1999 and upon such withdrawal clause (a) and clause (b) of sub-section (1) shall apply.”
The current Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, suspended this ordinance on October 12, 2007. But he was soon dismissed after Musharraf abrogated the constitution on November 3, 2007. The new Chief Justice, Abdul Hameed Dogar revived the NRO on February 27, 2008.

Host of the program “Awam Ki Awaz” on CNBC visits city courts in Karachi to see the improvements made by the much vaunted (by “civil society” and the “honorable lawyers”) Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry.

I guess it was a fair trade to give away Musharraf and 2 years of Pakistan, and get Iftikhar Chaudhry in return ?

To see normally “harami” lawyers portrayed as great saviours of “civil society” by Geo and AAJ TV.

Whoever thought up THAT script ? Could it be someone who was not familiar with the realities of Pakistani lawyers ?

Geo and AAJ happen to run programs made by foreign government agencies (Voice of America – VOA) and run them so they are indistinguishable from their own programming. Which media channel would tolerate that kind of brand dilution – especially in Pakistan where airing a U.S. propaganda channel would not exactly be a commercially profitable move.

How much are Geo and ARY “overpaid” for their services ?

In the same way that the USIS overpaid for printing material at the Jamaat-e-Islami printing presses in the 1960s – as a way to clandestinely (and “legally”) fund them ?

This video has lawyers fighting with the reporter instead of accepting realities (so that they can prepare themselves to fix them).

One lawyer lies by saying he has never seen a policeman take a bribe. The reporter says she has seen it already in her short trip to the city courts.

This is the result when lawyers refuse to condemn their own. Why ? Because they have a “lawyer’s biradari” (a term they seem to be quite proud of).

Which explains why a complaint against Iftikhar Chaudhry was not examined by the Supreme Judicial Council but was squelched by his colleagues on the Supreme Court. What was so damaging in the accusations against Iftikhar Chaudhry that they did not want to bring it up to scrutiny ? What were the reasons for refusing to look at the accusations ?

The Pakistani public still does not know if there ever was an analysis done of the accusations against Iftikhar Chaudhry – were they correct or were they incorrect ?

The public is split between people who could see what was happening, party workers (each supporting their own), and the rest were non-thinkers. Asma Shirazi on Geo TV is one of those. At least Hamid Mir knows why he hates Musharraf or why he wants to make it appear that he hates him. Yet it is presenters on TV like Asma Shirazi who cannot control their facial expressions – they are so SURE that the story told by the “media” is the correct one, and anyone supporting Musharraf MUST be mistaken.

Evidently she did not feel any sign of disgust when she glad-handed the many parliamentarians on her former show “Parliament Cafe” on Geo TV. Fine specimens of integrity those.

Asma has now been replaced by an equally naive and perhaps even more jahil lady presenter on Geo TV, who has her own show where she is utterly incapable of asking any incisive question of her guests.

Charming, positive and energetic we sat down to talk about all that is Fouzia Saeed. wa

Lets start with the beginning, where were you born and raised

I was born in 1959, in Lahore, and I think that is where I inherited a lot of my personality, just out of the culture and environment. I say a lot of times that I am a very ‘Lahori’ person, more then a Punjabi, but I have never lived in Lahore.

What does it mean to be a ‘Lahori’ person?

I think it means to be positive and fun loving. High energy and high emotion; quoting from my favorite movie, Dead Poets Society ‘Really sucking the bone marrow out of life.

I started my traveling very early in life, when I was 20 days old I was taken to Karachi, and when I was a year old, I was living in Dhaka with my parents. But most of my bringing up happened in Peshawar. My father was in Pakistan International Airlines so we moved around a lot as a family. Even though I was very young, I think absorbed the diversity very quickly. I went to school in Peshawar and then to Peshawar University. A very different environment from what my nuclear families internal environment was, but that was also part of learning.

All that moving around must’ve taken its toll on you?

I learned to appreciate diversity from a very early age due to all the moving around. The family relationships remained steady but the environment and culture was always changing. And in one way that way deeply affected me was that changing environment is what stimulates me

What city always remained close to your heart?

I love the Lahore, its hustle and bustle but Peshawar was like home, and the small town culture. We had a lot of restrictions but I think that is what taught me to always find way out, without violating someone or rocking the boat too much. I always wanted more, in every aspect and that presented somewhat of a challenge to me and my parents. Studies were never enough. It was my creative yearning that wanted more. I told my parents I wanted to learn music, and convinced them to get me a sitar and hire an ‘ustad’ to teach me. I was also into folk dancing and performed on my college stage a few times. And that aspect I have retained till now, the love for culture.

Music? That is interesting. Tell me a little about being a student in those days

‘Students like myself always wanted to put in a hundred percent. I think 24 hours was just not enough time. I was just so adamant to produce the best in every aspect. Our output and what we produced mattered. I find it so hard to relate to students these days; I don’t see that drive or that desire to be the best.Nowadays you are smart if you can just get by. I don’t mean to say I don’t have hope from this generation, but I think they have too much. They take it as their right, and I don’t think it’s a right, it is a privilege to have everything dished out to you in a plate. In our times the environment was very open, now days it’s a lot more congested. Back in those days I had to wear a chaddar because I was in Peshawar, but the environment was more open then Islamabad today. We have gotten conservative and burdened with religion. Religion used to be a beautiful thing. Now it is being used to restrict people and control people. In those days it gave a sense of liberation. Religion was a sacred connection. Even though women used to cover them selves up, they were more liberated. In my college days, I used to take these vans and travel alone, wherever I wanted to go.

Was it the fact that Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was the Prime Minister?

I was a big fan of Zulifiqar Ali Bhutto. And I don’t think we can talk about that era without ZAB.He was our hero and that was pah of empowerment, empowerment of masses. We were very liberated in our hearts. That year, ‘75 was also declared the year of women and Nusrat Bhiutto was the first lady. It didn’t matter what the policies were, just seeing her, knowing she was never wrapped up in a chaddar or anything, we felt very proud of our selves and felt like we could do anything and just conquer the world. That kind of feeling was always there. That is one big difference. Where even in a city like Peshawar we were much more liberated in our youth then the young people i see here in Islamabad. When i see these young girls, around kindergarten or grade one or two, and its part of there school uniforms to wear scarves, and overalls it makes me cry. How sad it is that the first thing that this young girl learns about her body is that she needs to hide it. That is her first exposure of herself. That is the difference. We were covered then, but much more liberated. In Lahore and Rawalpindi, i remember very clearly adult women riding motorcycles. Can you imagine, in this day and age, regardless of where technology has taken us, a woman riding on a two wheeler?

Cant even imagine it in this day and age! You were actively involved the student politics?

‘ We were political. We have to agree that was the era of students, i wouldn’t say leading the political movements but very active and involved. I have been very involved in student politics. There were a few positions for women though. I was the president of my college association for two years. With my studies, i was always involved in many different things at my university, I always kept my grades very high just as a negotiating chip for my parents.’

And coming towards Zia and his time, we cant talk about ZAB without bringing up the coup and Zia.

‘Politics i mentioned because, we felt like it was our business. If our country was going down the drain, it concerned all of us. The sense of ownership was very strong. We felt like we got violated when Martial Law came and Zia ul Haq over threw the government. It was a very painful and personal. There was one time that Zia invited a delegation of students that i was part of, and despite protest from my colleagues and friends and told him i told him to his face that what he did to ZAB and the country was unfair. There was a lot of military personal around and my friends feared they would lock me up and I’ll be forgotten about. But thankfully i am still here. We were angry that he over threw our hero. Now many people have many things to say about ZAB, some good, some not so pleasant, but i think the kind of transformation that he brought about, regardless of his policies, he empowered the people. He just changed something within masses, he gave us the feeling that ‘ we are the owners of this country’. It was in that spirit that even when faced with problems at our university or at the national level, we would rally up and really own up to issue’s. Every violation during Zia’s era has made me and my conviction towards human rights stronger. I was in the States when Bhutto was hanged, and that feeling of despair and helplessness was overwhelming.’

Can you draw a comparison between what was then and what is now?

I distinctly remember, in the later years, when my niece was going to college, in Islamabad. There was a rape at the college, and the principal announced that the college would be closed for 3 days and that was the end of it. I could not believe that the students would let that happen. There was no hue or outcry.
I understand that later in Zia’s era, any collective activity was strictly banned and that era did not provide a platform for any collective activism later on. In those days, the value system was that you mind your own business. Talking about politics and other things was strictly frowned upon. They even had signs in restaurants that said Religious and Political conversation is not allowed. Political almost a swear word. I understand we have been through such times, but young kids these days have good grey matter and i am amazed at the lack of collective activism. That is one part i feel we have lost. Where as i feel that the collective sense should have become a higher priority, we have lost it.

I couldn’t agree more. Now days its all about corporate jobs and fat salaries. What do you think changed?

Our definition of value and achievement has changed. Where as now days it’s about, what is my net worth and what materialistic dreams i have, i am still very old fashioned in this matter and for me, achievement means, what have i contributed to this world, and it means dignity and integrity. Back then it was almost scandalous to be chasing after money and talking about it. I still cannot. I am a consultant for the UN, and if someone asks me if can you do this training for free, i cannot say, excuse me i have a fee structure! It was part of our bringing up. If you looked at society and what was valued collectively, it was not money

You left for the states very early. Right after your undergraduate. How was that experience for the younger you?

‘As a student, i left for the States for studies. And i am very proud that it was my government that funded my education through a scholarship. And i still feel indebted to my country for that. I felt like i had to contribute back to the society and the country. I didn’t know anyone there but i was very excited about the prospect. I am very thankful to my parents that they decided to send me there, because for young girls its very different as compared to young men. In my eight years there, i don’t think i wasted a single minute. I was immediately the president of Pakistan Student Union and then my onto international student politics and university politics and eventually the woman’s movement. Along with that, i was always organization various cultural activities and getting everyone mobilized. We had so many cultural activities, that it saddens me to see the lack of it in student days nowadays. That is not our folk culture. Students now are single dimensional. At the most they collect money and get a band. There should be more cultural activities initiated by students’

You changed from an MS in Design to PhD in Education. Why the leap?

I changed gears from Design to a PhD in Education because i always thought i would nest myself at a university. Education was my vehicle for fighting for rights and social issue’s.The kind of education we get here, I was always aware of the fact that it was a privilege to be studying the courses i studied. It is such a luxury.I was very aware of the kind of educations system i had left back home. The kind of teachers, the kind of courses and the kind of material, it is so stimulating in your mind that your going over it in your head all the time

The creative part of a human being needs to be unleashed for them to be complete.

In the recent times due to rendezvous between political forces and media, an ugliest picture about my country has been portrayed in front of the world, a picture that holds no color or I am not wrong to say “It’s all black just black”. I’m struggling to unveil the true picture that hold millions of colors, so bright and so shiny that can dazzle one’s eyes. If you are son of a soil, and you love your country as much as I do then you will help me fight against those who are painting your land as a black corner of this world. “Spread the truth as much as you can, fight for the right”

Pakistan meaning the “The land of pure” where each day the sun rises with a new hope, with an enduring majesty as the rays of light flushing down towards the snowcapped peaks of Himalaya’s and Nanga Parbat. A land where love finds a meaning in the heart warming hospitability of people, a land where history and ancient civilization mystifies one’s heart, a land where spiritualism unveils its mystery at the shrines of Sufi Saints. This is the land I belong to, this is the land I’ll die for and this is the land that defines my identity.

————————————————————————————————————————————————

Pakistan meaning the “The land of pure” where each day the sun rises with a new hope, with an enduring majesty as the rays of light flushing down towards the snowcapped peaks of Himalaya’s and Nanga Parbat. A land where love finds a meaning in the heart warming hospitability of people, a land where history and ancient civilization mystifies one’s heart, a land where spiritualism unveils its mystery at the shrines of Sufi Saints. This is the land I belong to, this is the land I’ll die for and this is the land that defines my identity.

The invincible 167 million Pakistani’s progressing forward with high hopes and a mission holding an unquenchable thirst to be the world leader’s soon. Despit the chaos, despite the ill spilled by the westeren media to demoralize the nation and to uproot the patriotism from the hearts and minds of people of this country, despite the foreign funded terrorists bombing hundreds of Pakistani’s each day painting the roads red with the blood of young children, women and men. Every drop of it shouts back loud ” You can never take us down, We’ll fight back till our last breath“. Reminding you this is the nation which has a 7th largest pool of scientists and Engineers in the World[1]. and the country that is ranked 9th in the world where English language is spoken and used as an official language [1].

Musharraf interview on Frontline with Kamran Shahid on Express News TV – Sept 13, 2009

Kamran Shahid, representing the younger, and possible more urbane (i.e. post-newspaper era) journalists, who has previously conducted reasonably combatitive interviews with other politicians, here tackles Musharraf.

This interview encapsulates nicely the disparate arguments given earlier in the series “Why Musharraf Was Removed” on this youtube channel (and on this blog).

The answer is that Musharraf was considered cooperative but not totally servile.

Servile observance is much more forthcoming from the feudal elements of Pakistan. They are used to that model of behaviour where their slaves are servile, while they themselves are servile to a bigger entity.

From expansion of drone bases to expansion of U.S. “diplomatic mission” to many acres of land right next to centers of power in Islamabad. And the proliferation of Blackwater (or whatever new name it has acquired) presence.

Also some well placed criticism of the “journalists” like Ahmed Rashid, who sit in the U.S. and act like all too keen advisors. They are akin to the native american scouts who helped Europeans to expand into North America to the detriment of their own people.

However even Ahmed Rashid is probably better than some of the wolf-in-sheeps-clothing “journalists” like Hamid Mir and some others, who are not presenters of truth, but presenters of controversy. Thus they did not highlight the real and budding problems for Pakistan ahead of time, and then wind up blaming Musharraf for them – for example the power crisis.

Although the power crisis is exacerbated by the PPP government’s refusal to pay the IPPs (independent power producers), and negotiation of newer power contracts at higher rates (perhaps is a way to strongarm the IPPs to pay “commission” to Zardari), there still was a (albeit smaller) crisis in the making because of all the consumer electronics (ballooning of airconditioners) which ramped up consumption.

Where were the big business interests (once again they demonstrate how big business in Pakistan has not graduated from the “Seth” mentality seeking political favour under one leadership or the other regardless of the overall policy impact for Pakistan), and where were the media in highlight the imminent power crisis.

Also the blind spot in the media to the reality of the “Lawyer’s movement”. Their lack of focus on why the Supreme Judicial Council failed to examine the accusations against Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry. The financial backing by Benazir to get better terms in NRO negotiations and after the departure of the PPP “former-Jiyala” lawyers, the resuscitation by Nawaz Sharif to a movement that mustered few lawyers, though it compensated with support from Nawaz Sharif voting base.

Add to this the presence of foreign funding to Geo and AAJ TV in the form of payments for airing VOA programs.

And you have the makings of a perfect storm of media coverage that covers one side of the story, but chooses to keep quiet about the moderating caveats in the story. This “movement” has been likened to the “mass uprising” in Iran against the Mossadegh government by Zaid Hamid (the Brasstacks defence analyst). The anti-Mossadegh movement was a CIA operation to remove a leader who was being seen as constraining for U.S. interest at that time.

Although realistically, in the case of Musharraf, even if there was a need for “regime change” by the U.S. it was probably a combination of getting better terms for drone flights, expansion of U.S. embassy as well as reintroducing the policial figures back into Pakistan.

This was a need probably realized by Musharraf himself – the removal of the political forces (which includes feudal and entrenched forces) had created a vacuum, which rather than being filled by educated youth and new idealistic leaders wound up being filled by the religious forces which were primed (with weapons) following the Afghan wars, Saudi funding (proxy war against Iran) and drug money to crimianl elements in FATA.

The corruption probes had mainly affected PPP and PML-N (and PML-Q some of who had been forgiven for exigency sake). Many cases were instigated by PPP or PML-N themselves against the other – and not Musharraf. The cases had languished in courts and the incompetent (and underpaid) legal system had not handled them well. In the absence of these political forces, the “religious” parties saw great opportunity (as if there can be such a thing in Islam – since what is a “religious” in a state full of muslims ?).

The fallout of 911 and the activated anti-U.S. sentiment did not help either – as the religious parties could make that their banner (even though when the time comes they would kowtow to the U.S. even more). Thus the religious parties used this time to foment domestic dissention at a time of great foreign threat to Pakistan.

On the other hand, it may have been used by Musharraf as well – NOT as media is prone to say to “bolster his own position” – but to argue for why Pakistan ‘could not do more”. Yet few in the media understood or bothered to care for these undercurrents.
